Why was Resident Evil 3.5 scrapped?

Why was Resident Evil 3.5 scrapped?

The Castle and Hookman versions ended up getting canceled because of technical problems.

Resident Evil used to be good. Now it is just another rehashed legacy franchise, like Final Fantasy. I wish Capcom would make new IPs instead of the same Street Fighter reskins, Monster Hunter reposts, and Resident Evil zombie-fetish.

If RE7 wasn't enough of a radical shift no new IP would satisfy you.

      >Why was Resident Evil 3.5 scrapped?
      It wasn't.
BIO3 was certainly scrapped (or arguably elements were reworked into Dead Aim- we don't have enough details on it beyond a loose synopsis), but prototypes of BIO4 were not.
The two biggest ones, Stylish and Girl+Dog were reworked into new IPs- Devil May Cry and Haunting Ground. The one you're posting, the Hookman build, was simply a tech demo and nothing more. Outside of the few rooms we saw and a basic synopsis, the game didn't really exist and didn't go far into development because it was too taxing on the hardware.

      >Resident Evil used to be good. Now it is just another rehashed legacy franchise
Resident Evil released 11 games, several phone games, a complete English novel series, several Japanese novels, two films, a CG short film, several radio dramas, and an additional remake of the first game, alongside half of the major game getting at least two versions on the console they launched on, from 1996 to 2004. 8 years, before Resident Evil 4 even came out.

The Nintendo deal. Gamecube was too weak for anything but a dumb Gears wannabe with outdated controls and invisible walls.

Too detailed. Could it even run on OG Xbox? I'm not sure it would run even on 7th gen consoles.

There's nothing in the demo that wasn't GC friendly. Don't read extra detail into the blurry off screen captures we have, it was tiny corridors and blue lit 3D models glowing on a TV screen.
The real reason why it was cancelled was precisely the same reason RE1.5 was cancelled: They had no fricking clue where they were going with it and decided to rebuild on a much simpler concept. Game development is like this the world over. Young 20-somethings spray their desires all over the whiteboard about how it would be amazing if they simulated an entire spanish village and it incorporated realtime day/night systems and how Leon's beard would actually grow and it would contain a 10 hour business management sim... And then reality sets in and they realise A) there's not enough time in the world to do that, B) It wouldn't be fun even if they could and C) They don't have enough talent to actually implement it even if they had infinite power in the target hardware.
And that's how games either get cut to ribbons and paired down until the 3D D&D/space marine co-op squad shooter becomes Doom or it goes off the rails and never gets finished like Battlecruiser 3000AD (or Star Citizen).

That's literally a shiny specular option on the GC rendering modes. It's basically free. You can also see how low poly it is in that shot. There's a lot of misunderstanding about the complexity of rendering in the early 2000s, mostly because PC users were stuck with the worst API on the planet that only spoke lowest common denominator to graphics chipsets that were capable of far more. If they took it out of the final game, it wasn't for performance reasons, they must of thought it looked bad.
My guess is they just never implemented the lighting system that would have made it look good in every situation. It's easy to fake things like that for a demo where you control the 4 scenes you see. Harder to make a generic system that works for any lighting conditions. Same deal with Dark Souls 2: idiots think it was performance related, experienced professionals know it was because nobody wanted to manually place and bake multiple lights per scene and sync them with the realtime lighting system.

The fact that you actually think RE4 is a gears wannabe. A game that literally predates gears by 22 months. Lmao what a dipshit wienersucker Gankertard

Yeah it's obvious. It feels like they even incorporated QTEs into gameplay. Rodeo run feels like running QTE to me from RE4.
Gears characters into Resident Evil might be a good mod. Chris is already bulky. One anon said the same about Lara Croft. Gears doesn't feel as good as fit as Lara but might be good idea.
Gears is /vr/ approved right? It came out in 2007 in PC.

you're an idiot, the final product is 10x more detailed then this. these tinyndull hallways have nothing on the ornate interiors of the castle and such places.

they scrapped this version because the entire existence of RE as a franchise hinged on RE4. they were literally going to can the whole series if RE4 didn't, which is why they opted to change up the gameplay and make it more action oriented, fearing that shit like this would be too stale and derivative of the older games.

Hook man would have been a bad game, that's why it was scrapped. Just look at it, it's trash, like Silent Hill had a stroke. Also hallucinating is always a lame "game mechanic".

The Hookman concept was literally "We want the Silent Hill audience."

Why are japs so gay for Jacob's ladder? Also great article there, it really encapsulates why hook man would have been shit, instead of trying to innovate they were trying to ape Hollywood and chase trends. Most damning was that they wanted the game to literally make no sense because thet would be super scary.

They were already trying to ape the latest trends and movies with Code Veronica. That whole thing is like a poorly aged time capsule of late 90s pop culture.

I think they were going for "let's a get a POV of what happens to someone before someone they succumb from infection to the virus" but I agree, the concept looks like ass. Stylish made it sound much cooler by turning you into a superhuman and refreshing the series gameplay.

        >A Catholic teacher (Maya Larkin, played by Winona Ryder) meets an atheist journalist Peter Kelson, whom a group of Catholics and Priests believe has been chosen by the devil to be the Antichrist.

Why would you not want a demon possessed Leon Kennedy? Just roll Silent Hill, RE and God Hand together.

And the stupid hallucination shit consistently makes for the worst parts of Modern RE, like the doll house segment in Village.

The " it wasn't real and all in your head" shit is always annoying. I haven't played it but in 4makes separate ways Ada fights a teleporting monster and the justification for how it can teleport is that Ada is hallucinating apparently.
