You can't get good depth out of Action combat- Not being able to target allies in an MMORPG is fricking LMAO to say the least.

At the very least going forward (until some new shit is invented) it should be hybrid

              Anonymous

That's a good thing. Frick the trinity and healers in particular. Nobody actually enjoys playing whack a mole with 20 morons who keep running away from you every chance they get.

              Anonymous

you can get plenty of depth. You can still target allies with stuff like a Mouse-Over cast, like you can macro in 14. There's no real reason that the game has to stay tab-target when you can open up reactive gameplay and creative combo/skill useage by making it more action-based. Ground targetting, mouse-over, priority hitting are all options to explore.
And, even in action-based combat, there's nothing that says you can't have a Focus Target, that makes your aimed abilities automatically target what you've locked onto, allowing you to focus on positioning, and using mouse-over and other abilities to support the party

              Anonymous

BDO came pretty close to nailing MMO action combat. The control scheme and the animations are too good for me to think otherwise. It's semi-hybrid since you can target allies with heals in that game. However issues like desync and ping really stick out way more than they do for tab target. The issue can never be solved but some dev could easily take that style of action combat and make it more stable.

The most successful MMO in the world uses tab target lmao

The two most successful MMOs aren't scammy games with tons of cash shop stuff and made up issues to sell cash shop items, they're not played for their combat and they're way more accessible for people who don't care about combat.

                Anonymous

You think Riot won't want their MMO to be as accessible as possible?

                Anonymous

No it really didn't. BDO is both, unplayable outside the countries server and is a fricking mess in PvP, whilst also having basically zero depth because everyone just does their "combo" and that's it. There's no reactions to anything in the game.

                Anonymous

                >However issues like desync and ping really stick out way more than they do for tab target. The issue can never be solved but some dev could easily take that style of action combat and make it more stable
That's the problem with Korean MMO's that get released in the west, they are designed to be played on low ping in a tiny country so they don't experience the desync and ping issues at all.
Even in games like FFXIV it's the same, when someone told Yoshi-P about the ping issues the west have with classes like machinist he was dumbfounded and had no idea what they were talking about, because they only design the game around the JP playerbase and care about them.

And BDO has the single most depth in combat of any game, it's pretty much like a fighting game in how you need to do your combos and react.

it depends entirely on what class you choose. I went Bard, thinking of being a support since i had a full group of people all trying to play. I legitimately had to have 3 different skillsets, because going support meant I did no damage at all, while going full damage still didn't kill shit as fast as someone playing a real damage dealer.

Valorant is the only game I've ever played where I regularly run into female gamers. League is ranked two on that list. A decent MMO that attracts 15-20% of playerbase as females would change the world. And girls now all put on cute voices not the femogre bullshit that was rampant in WoW

really? how the hell did Riot manage to get that to happen in an FPS? FPS is supposed to be one of the more gendered genres. Is it just Riot converting League players to valorant players?
Also were they females or "females"?

This was the whole reason I tried Valorant but I just can't stand the shooting gameplay. And League doesn't have a forced voice so it's hard to talk to girls there unless you force yourself upon them by adding them after.
Overwatch was a decent game to harass women in but yeah in general MMO's tend to have a lot of women.
I play ESO and that shows your account name and character name at the same time so it's easy to spot women because dudes will pick a girly character name but then have a normal account name.
Despite knowing all this I am extremely lonely I hope OW2 is good so I can continue to annoy women online

Riot has boatloads of cash, robust network infrastructure, and a lot of brand recognition. For them to take a stab at an MMO is a considerably smaller risk than it would be for most other companies, and the payoff is potentially huge. They don't even necessarily need to eat into the user base of other MMOs if they can convert some of their own existing users.

It's going to be worth trying at least, it's a brand new MMO with a world that is rich with established lore, something that NW suffered from since a lot of people didn't give a frick about anything related to the lore. Haven't kept up with lol that much since like season 3 but I imagine league fans who also like MMOs will still play it because it's league but not a moba and they're heavily invested in the lore even if at an entry level or an appreciation for the style of fantasy.

MMOs are extremely lucrative in the long-run, but extremely expensive in the short-term.
It takes a lot to get them up and running.
To host enough players in enough servers in the right regions.
MMO players are most susceptible to sunk cost fallacy, too.
Once enough people are suckered into blowing hundreds into an MMO they will shill it for free and attack criticism like it's a gun aimed at their own family.

MMOs are shit, but they work the way these big companies want them to.
