This. Next console probably in late 24 or 25.
If development was espscially dire and Switch keeps strong sales, maybe even 26.

They always announce the big games the previous year. If we haven't heard about anything big by now it's not coming this year. The biggest game I'm expecting is another NSMB game to coincide with the movie, but you're nuts if you think we're getting 3D Mario or Mario Kart 9 or whatever in 2023 with no announcement yet.

        Anonymous

They've been announcing most games close to release. Xenoblade 3 was announced in February 2022 and released in July, Fire Emblem Engage in September and released in January. Though of course they won't put stuff like Mario Kart 9 on Switch, it would make no sense.

Probably, yeah, but I wouldn't base it on the games we know so far.
Usually they announce what's coming that year on the year's first direct.

They're still planning to support Splatoon 3 until late 2024.

Unless Switch's successor has backwards compatibility that may be signs of an early 2025 launch.

Fair enough, but the booming indie dev market is fairly wide open for people to hawk their shovelware on it, and it seems to be doing well enough there to make it worthwhile to keep supporting the Switch

Same, and I hadn't bothered turning its wifi on. My yearly Switch in review was missing two whole games the 15 hours spent between them. Less than 100 hours played in 2022, a new low for me and my Switch. 3DS hit its lowest of alltime too, yet it still passed 100.

I own a PS5 and an Xbox Series X. I still play my Switch more than any of them. Quite often when I games comes out I'll buy the Switch version. Of course this depends on the game as some games just run like shit.

But many games jusy suit the Switch. When Ocotpath Traveller 2 comes out I'll be buying the Switch verison over the PS5 version. The storybook design just suits the Switch better and will make for a far more comfy and enjoyable experience on Nintendo's System. The portability just makes everything better for me.

My Switch remains my most played gaming device of the past 6 years and ots not even close.

                >And thats a good thing

What are you on about? For the whole 5~ hours I spent playing Scarlet the game seemed to be running fine to me? This was unpatched, offline-only, and handheld-only (cause I got a Lite) btw. What made me drop the game was how goddamn confusing it was. I literally made negative progress towards the second city because I got lost going in circles on the way there. I've been playing Pokemon since 1998, always bought and played through all mainline versions to completion but Sc/Sv's "open world" design utterly defeated me.

Not hard to wrap your head around the idea.

Octopath Traveller is the perfect example of the Switch effect. Playing this gorgeous little retro themed rpg feel far in your hands than sitting at a desk to play on PC. I can't even begin to imagine how shit that experience must be.

And given the storybook chaperised design its perfect for being snuggled up in bed. If you can't wrap your head around the idea of "comfy" then thats a YOU problem.

Some games are just BETTER on Switch because they suit the hardware better.

                Anonymous

Sounds like a you problem. There is no reason to even own a PS5 at all, because they're aren't any games to play. Xbox x/s have some games, but not nearly asany as Switch. If you aren't playing the Switch because you aren't interested in the games, then you probably just aren't very interested in playing video games right now at all. Which is fine. There are plenty of other things to do.

I am, I just play everything that's multiplat on PC and only use my switch for exclusives because I'm not gonna deal with silky smooth 25fps if I don't have to. I'm not interested in Mario games so my switch just ended up being a Xenoblade/Platinum machine.

        >Was there a reason to release a new console 6 years into the Wii's life? It was stilling selling a shit ton.
The Wii peaked in its third year, sales started dropping off hard after than point and by its sixth year it sold less than 10m units. It was a very frontloaded system.

No, the Wii's novelty died halfway through it's lifecycle and this also hurt both MS and Sony, mostly the former, because they tried to get some of that casual market too with the Kinect and Eye Toy which no one gave a shit about after less than a year. At the end of its life the Wii was barely selling because nothing but shovelware was being released at that point.

You now remember that Nintendo dropped the Wii like a hot potato a whole year before the Wii U released and that Nintendo of America in particular even resisted/refused to bring over the last batch of 2011/2012 first and third-party exclusives like Xenoblade, The Last Story, Pandora's Tower and Fatal Frame 2. At least the Wii U still got some crappy leftovers in 2016 like Mario and Sonic, Paper Mario Color Splash, Star Fox Zero and Zelda TPHD and was sent off with BotW in 2017.

        >It was stilling selling a shit ton.
        Bull-fricking-shit.

The Wii got a heart attack in late 2009/early 2010, with the only noteable hurrah saleswise being Galaxy 2. It was dead in the water after barely under/over 4 years, depending on who you asked.
The Switch peaked between year 4/5 with something only below the DS itself, with the dive during year 6 being average among consoles at worse. We're barely a month off entering year 7 with its last proper year on the market with shit like Zelda for the majority, FE, Pikmin and a Kirby remaster for the more dedicated, plus shit like Bayo Origins for the more niche.
Year 8 (2024) will be its literal last, but the last hurrah is now, nothing close to what the Wii was. People saw waggle as a gimmick good for a select few games they can count on one, maybe two hands, while people relish in both modern Nintendo games as well as the Hybrid being beyond the perception of a gimmick to where besides graphicsgays most would want them to stick to the form factor (why many want specifically a Switch 2). Wii was dried up AGES before the Wii U, which doesn't even consider its own slew of problems. They'll be fine.

I know "Nintendo" but you are not comprehending how ridiculously old 3 year old tech is. The switch used 1.5 year old tech and it was supposed to be 1 year old since we know from internal documents that the switch was delayed from late 2016 to early 2017 (likely to finish BotW). Even Nintendo isn't gonna go that cheap. If they're using 2022 tech then I would assume their target release date was at least at some point late 2023 but may have been delayed to early 2024.

People always say "just wait for the February direct to show the games for the year"
Here are previous february directs and any important reveals releasing in the same year.

    >2022
Xenoblade 3 and Switch sports (shovelware)
    >2021
Skyward Sword HD (port), Mario Golf (shovelware) and Miitopia (port)
    >2020
    Clubhouse games
    >2019
Mario Maker 2, Link's Awakening (remake)
    >2018
    Mario Tennis (shovelware), Smash

So looking back, we usually get one medium sized games and a few ports announced in the February direct. I would imagine the medium sized game will be a new 2D Mario to go with the movie and the ports could be anything. But don't expect them to suddenly reveal a bunch of huge games.

      >I can't imagine that Nintendo would bother making a Switch 2 that is all that much more powerful.
It may be hard to imagine, but that's because Iwata has designed all their consoles since 2004. They have a new president now so his philosophy on hardware will probably be a bit different.

          >Any idea what this philosophy may be?
It's a good question, and I think to answer it you have to look at early switch games vs late ones. Games take years to make so most early switch games were designed under Iwata while late ones were designed under Furukawa.

From what we've seen Furukawa has no interest in the casual market which was Iwata's bread and butter. Under Furukawa the switch has become more expensive both in hardware (OLED), and in software (no discounts ever, as well as a $50 version of NSO). The games have also become more core audience focused with for example Mario Party Superstars compare to Super Mario Party.

With Furukawa I expect the next console to be more like a typical playstation upgrade, where it's a lot stronger and that's it. He'll probably try harder to court third parties as well and I expect him to get rid of the $20 NSO subscription on the next console, while adding gamecube games to the $50 version to justify it.

        Anonymous

Furukawa came from The Pokémon Company so I'm sure he understand there's no need to change things up wildly when a formula is successful. I feel like we can expect another hybrid console with specs close to PS4 and any additional gimmick such as VR integration only in the background. Speaking of OLED, I think they might make separate models at launch to have a cheaper LCD option.

The $200 version of the switch sells like shit while the $350 version of the switch sells like crack. It's not accurate to say price is the primary thing selling switches, in fact it's one of the least important elements of the console. What's selling it is games and the hybrid nature, mostly the games.

At no point in gaming history has power ever meant anything.

      NES
      GameBoy
      PlayStation
      DS
      PlayStation 2
      Wii
      3DS
      Switch

All of them completely underpowered compared to their rivals but still curbstomped them though the Earth's crust.

      Anonymous

I mean if you ignore all the moronic-ass design decisions that no-one asked for nor wanted, yeah you can say power has no affect or even was the cause of those hardware flopping. It's not like they decided to stick with cartridges with the N64, causing third party to not be happy about space and moving to Sony who weren't morons. Not to mention them also being buttholes to devs at the time. It's not like GameCube had mini-discs for absolutely no fricking reason whatsoever, also limiting storage space like their previous console and turning away most third party devs again. Didn't even have the excuse of faster loading times like the N64. Actually just pointless and an example of Nintendo really trying to be "unique" at all costs. As for the Wii U, I don't even know why you brought up power.

With the WII, Nintendo already stopped making hardware that were good in any way. It was practically 2 GameCubes taped together which was old tech at that point. The WII U being better 7 years later was just an expected evolution.

By comparison Microsoft lost $10 BILLION trying to brute force the Xbox to success. Just because the GameCube didn't sell as well as previous systems doesn't mean Nintendo weren't laughing all the way to the bank.

Technology was nowhere near good enough for virtual reality, that bulky piece of shit "handheld" was never going to be anything other than a flop.

Everyone else had moved to CDs, cartridges were more expensive and far more limited in storage, meaning third party support was near impossible for the majority of games. Nintendo also did the galaxy brain move of pissing off third-parties like Square, which would continue to haunt them in the GameCube era.
      >GameCube
Mini DVDs didn't have enough storage compared to DVDs, the system couldn't double as a DVD player, it was released too late and third-parties were still pissed off with Nintendo.

Also holds the distinction of being one of the only systems Nintendo ever sold at a loss (the other being the 3DS after the price cut), despite being far weaker than the Xbone/PS4, all because it was an over engineered piece of shit.
Also, funny how you omit how well Nintendo does when they release a powerful system and makes the right design decisions, like with the NES, SNES and even the Switch itself.

      >Years just started
The issue is that big games tend to be announced in the previous year. After this point we usually get 1-2 mid tier games (something like a 2D Mario for example) and then several ports, remasters and shovelware like the mario sports games. There will no doubt be more games, but with Pikmin 4 being set up to be the big holiday game it's looking like a weak year for sure.

You are correct that they announce most of their games in the current year. However, not all games are treated equally. The bigger games are almost always announced in a previous year, sometimes multiple years in advance. They have not broken this "rule" since Smash in early 2018. If they had some huge game coming this year they would have announced it in the summer or fall of 2022 like Pikmin 4. It's safe to say, they don't. The only other "major" release I'm expecting this year is another NSMB game to go with the movie.

But that doesn't mean we wont get more games. They're just gonna be shovelware and remasters.

I personally classify Nintendo games into 3 categories
              >Major
              System sellers/massive sellers
              >Medium
5-10 million sellers, but don't really sell consoles
              >Minor or Ports/shovelware
              Obvious what this means

Nintendo does usually announce 1-2 medium games each year in the year itself. So we probably will get another 2D Mario or something. I just meant there isn't gonna be another 3D Mario, Mario Kart and probably not even a Luigi's Mansion or Metroid Prime 4. Because those bigger more exciting games usually get more marketing.

I think we'll probably see the next mainline Nintendo console in 2024. They'll either do a reveal around October '23 with a release around March '24 like they did with the Switch, or they'll reveal around E3 '24 and release around November '24.

2023 will likely be the last full year for the Switch, but we'll probably still be seeing games for it until at least early-mid 2024.

I really wanted to see a Star Fox game on Switch, since I feel it's the perfect console for it, but Star Fox has a pretty bad rep for releasing too late in the console's life. Zero came out on Wii U less than a full year from the Switch's release. Maybe saving it for a launch title for the next system will be what brings the series back.

New console will likely launch March 2024 like the Switch launched March of 2017 to pad the numbers for the fiscal year.

It's also just a good time in general. The hardware they're using should be pretty cheap at that point, but not so old that it feels outdated on launch (it will a few years in, but by then they've already got your money). The games should be ready by then. It's easy to see it launching with the next 3D Mario for the broader audience and Metroid Prime 4 for the core audience, pound out a bunch of releases and then fill the holidays with Mario Kart 9 and some shitty Pokemon remake.

Really the only good game that came out on this console so far was odyssey. I wonder how people will remember it. Like people used to suck off wii and wii u constantly but no one mentions them now, I think it will be like that.

You're out of your goddamn mind if you actually believe Mario is the only game people will remember for Switch.

You are delusional to imply people were "sucking off" the Wii U. As far as Wii games, they're too old to hold up well in most cases, but not old enough for morons to be obsessively nostalgic about them like the N64 or gamecube games yet. Give it time and you will have a mass of zoomers jerking off about the "soul" of wii sports and brawl.

This is the year Metorid Prime 4 finally materializes in some form, whether or not it gets delayed to Switch 2 is another question but they will definitely reveal something this year.

Not necessarily. If the switch 2 comes out next year, and it's not cross gen then I wouldn't expect to see it at all.

They need something to tentpole this holiday season with, as of right now they've got fricking nothing. Even if it's just that fabled remaster of the original with a small tease of Prime 4 I expect something this year. Maybe I'm moronic but it's been long enough since development got rebooted, we're due some kind of update.

One of my favourite things about Ganker is how delusionally mentally ill everyone is.
You have this laughable notice that anyone who buys a Switch today is only allowed to play new games from that day forth.

Anyone picking up a Switch has an incredible library built up over 6 years to play from. No wonder its still selling so well. It has games people actually want to play.

I never understood this argument. I got my switch in March 2021 and the amount of games available was massive. I got BotW, Odyssey and then MonHun Rise.

lol no. The Switch will still be on sale for several years yet. Just like the 3DS still sold for several years after the Switch launch.

The Switch will remain there, constantly mocking Gankerbabbies during its many victory laps.

Playing Galaxy 2 with gyro instead of pointer controls would be painful. I think eventually they'll want to put Wii on NSO, so hopefully one day they'll let you just attach a USB sensor bar to the switch and use your old wii remotes since it would greatly improve those games.

2023 is the end of big first party games. But we won't get a new Switch until 2030. So we have 7 years of shovelware ahead of us.

Yes Nintendo will not release a console this decade.

Wind down has been happening since 2019. It's basically a nogames machine at this point. Animal Crossing one year, Metroid Dread the next, then Splatoon 3.
I mean alright you have Pokemon and Fire Emblem but they just seem so far removed from your typical Nintendo fan at this point. I get you need to make money so you can't just please the smaller fanbase that wants Donkey Kong, F-Zero, and Star Fox, but why can't you drop another 3D Mario when Mario prints money? Zelda is my favorite game series so I'm going to be eating soon, but it's just one game.

    >They still haven't released Advance Wars or Metroid Prime 4
    >GF is making Pokémon games yearly
    >Surprisingly enough, Fortnite is a success on the Switch and there's no sign of Epic abandoning the platform, same for other F2P games
Honestly I don't see Nintendo abandoning the Switch any time soon

Spring 2024 will be the Switch 2. They're gonna repeat their strategy with the Switch, wherein this E3 will be lackluster and focused almost entirely on Metroid Prime 4 or some other title that will inevitably be the Switch 2 launch title, along with already announced games. Then they'll do a big reveal at the end of this year or early next year that shows most the 2024 lineup and some stuff further down the road.

Switch 2 won't exist because Ninty no longer has any old games it can port, 3rd parties are growing weary of doing the heavy development lifting for Ninty's games, and Ninty continues to marvellously fail at transitioning to hd development. Just think about it: most of the Switches 1st party games were largely made by 3rd parties. Check the credits and realize that Nintendo is finished.

I got my Switch out of the closet for the first time since I gave up on it (when Mario Golf Super Rush was released and I bought it without knowing what a disaster it was). Both joycons have the "drift" problem which makes anything that needs analog sticks unplayable. I don't want to buy new ones for something I'm not even using, but at the same time if I don't, the device becomes unusable... How did things get to this point? We are not talking about a $25 Chinese product here, it is a console from a "premium" brand.
Anyway, waiting for the Easy Come Easy Golf to go on sale.
