Like why not switch to 8.1 or 10?

Damn, probably could have kept it too by copying appdata folder and the exe over into windows 10. It does just work.

      >new = better
nothing i could do in 10 that i couldnt in 7, faster, until the software I use for work removed 7 support (and still works in 7 but the updater/installer code forces the issue)

      the usual argument for updating:
      >but muh security
7 was around for over a decade. If it wasnt locked down tighter than Fort Knox it's either incompetence or sabotage, and there's no reason either won't apply to 10 or 11

moron take, you've clearly no idea how complex an OS is. New security exploits which apply retroactively to old stuff are found all the time and it's expected behavior, the difference is whether they are patched before they're out in the wild or not.

          Anonymous

akshually since the saturation of broadband, most remote attack vulnerabilities are automatically filtered at the gateway by NAT. even with a completely unsecured OS it's extremely difficult for exploits to succeed without user cooperation, as in the following:
          >fricking up your gateway config
          >visiting malicious sites with an unsecure browser. stick to LTS versions, do not use the regular update channel because all browsers use rapid release cycles meaning little testing of new features, same for windows itself if you're a 10/11 cuck
          >downloading and running untrusted executables
legitimately un-preventable remote attacks have not been seen for 20 years (blaster worm happened when many people were still on dialup). all the "critical" update bulletins since then either require you to be receiving unsolicited requests (i.e. running server software), or the issue starts with
          >1. Install malware
as long as your internet service uses a gateway, you aren't running a server, and you aren't a fricking moron, your PC is quite safe by default, even with known vulnerabilities and known attacks in the wild.

and btw, for everyone who says that obscurity doesn't work, blaster was actually reverse engineered from a preemptive security patch. forcing disclosure of the "old" vulnerability directly converted vulnerable PCs into actual victims. they don't like to tell you that the biggest computer security problem in history was caused by the disclosure mentality that is prevalent among security researchers. and by "security researchers" we mean people who make their living by selling software that protects against problems that they spend their working hours inventing and eventually disclose them into the wild to ensure that there is a need for their product.

I liked the classic UI in windows 7.
It didn't use any GPU, more stable and I had better frametime and less input lags in my games compared to the aero shit that's forced enabled in w8-10

I did switch to 10 but if I wasn't forced to by various games and programs all deciding to stop supporting 7 I'd still be there. It just got too much of a hassle not to switch.
10 is just generally too consumer unfriendly and with too much bloatware for me to voluntarily choose it over 7.

Window 10 right now is fine but the bloatware fricking sucks, you can get rid of it easily but it's not something we as consumers shouldn't be doing that. Window 11 is even worse to the point that now a Microsoft account is mandatory (using CMD still works tho)

they are convincing people to move away form it because the support has ended years ago and they obviously want people to be on the newest windows that they can better monetize. They definitely have their ulterior, scummy motives, but it sure as hell isn't because windows 7 is some fricking impenetrable bastion of privacy.

Also on that note, if Microsoft was indeed such an evil and nefarious company that it blatantly ignores EU and American privacy laws, what makes you think that they can't do this on Windows 7? Probably because hardly anyone uses Win 7 anymore, so it's not worth the effort. But why do you think they couldn't do it? They own the source code of Win 7, they run the servers, they can stealth install anything they want on your windows system as long as you access the internet.

Bingo. Also many modern features and systems that are required for a lot of newer software to function properly cant just be inserted into old code. You have to rewrite VAST sections to inject them and its not something you can expect someone to do. It is LESS work to make a whole new version every once in a while than keep a single one updated forever.

you can probably still play more games on win 7 than linux

        https://www.protondb.com/

Gaming on Linux is getting pretty good. 80% of top 1000 games on Steam can be played native or require one minor tweak to work smoothly. Some run better than on Windows.

The only issue actually is the Anti Cheat software. Most don't support Linux so you wont play games like Rainbow Six etc.

You can check on the site.

            >So what's the real number that work without jumping through hoops? 40%? 20%?

my experience with the Steam Deck is 76% of games work with basically no tweaking, i have 1216 games on steam, a decent sample size, of the ones valve has rated as great on deck, playable or unsupported, about 76% are either playable or great on deck, so they should run on base linux no prob

of the unsupported bunch, basically everything has worked with different degrees of tweaking

so by my estimates, about 76% of steam games run on linux out of the box, about 90% or 95% run with different degrees of tweaking, and that last 10% or 5% either has some anti-cheat that specifically targets linux or the game is legitimately a b***h to get running on linux, of the latter the only examples ive seen are dark void and the original version of darksiders, and i say "seen" because i havent experienced this

I have a friend who switched to Linux (Manjaro?) last summer and the only thing on Steam he couldn't play was Hell Let Loose, since the dev didn't do some adjustment with their Easy Anticheat implenetation.

Regardless of the other points in this discussion, this makes no sense. The smaller and more obscure it is the more likely it *will* work, if anything. For better or worse small and indie devs either suck off Linux or are not openly hostile to letting it work because of their already small potential user base

They're removing the -nobrowser flag and Chromium has dropped Windows 7 support.
Steam is currently using a horribly outdated (like 2+ years old, I shit you not) build of Chromium which doesn't even work properly any more for some of the payment methods.

That probably won't be entirely possible if you decide to update your hardware. Peripheral ports in modern AMD mobos at least uses an architecture that isn't backwards compatible with Windows 7. While you might still be able to boot into the OS, your keyboard and mouse will likely not work on it. You're better off setting up a virtual machine if you want to play old games.

I can understand if you want a Win XP install for old games, since XP has some stuff that might let it run Win 95 games better... but then you probably into driver issues anyway.

What GPU and CPU do you have and can you still install stuff like chipset drivers for them on Win 7?

I use a 3060 Ti and the Nvidia control panel AND geforce experience (not that you have to use it) are both functional.
If you try to install geforce experience by itself, it won't work on Windows 7. However, it works when you install it through the most recent security update for the 3060 Ti on Windows 7.

I'm currently on the Windows 10 partition so I had to go digging through a folder to find this picture.

Nice analogy. Older cars are easier to self-maintain, easier to fix and troubleshoot, and perform relatively well compared to newer cars for average daily drives. Only if you try to do shit you wouldn't normally do (rally, use a coupe to pull a semi-trailer, just about anything on Top Gear) do you run into issues.

You have no fricking clue what you're talking about. Not only can they do it themselves, they do. The real issue is using what they gather to charge anyone because the moment a trial goes to court where the FBI obtained the evidence under something like the Patriot Act there is a high chance it ends up before the Supreme Court and gets ruled unconstitutional and the case thrown out. It's actually amazing how wrong you are. Apple used to unlock criminals iphones for teh FBI but they stopped doing it in part because the FBI basically made them foot the entire cost. Literally the exact opposite of the FBI paying this tech companies. Holy shit you scary mix of uniformed, confident and paranoid.

So much for "optional" survey. When the only option is either give them literally everything or give them literally nothing.

Yet all the zoomers and morons will naturally not think about any of this and just look at the statistics and use it as an argument for anything.

Anyway this is the reason microshills seethe so much about win 7 because plenty of people use it.

Do you guys not know how statistics work? You could make the same argument that zoomers who already upgraded to 11 don't have the attention span to bother taking surveys. Obviously it's not 100% accurate, but it's still in the general ballpark with a margin of error of maybe 1-2%.

Eroge are actually easier to run on Linux because Linux doesn't have the region locale bullshit that Windows has
No need to install anything. Just run the shit through wine and play. The only brainlet filter is old RPG Maker games but those also require troubleshooting on Windows as well. It's still easier on Linux

This is where i took the Linux pill.
If you even go as far as paying hardware manufacturers to frick over optional Windows 7 installs you can go frick yourself.

You wanna push people to Windows 10? Fine.
But don't force me to do it by paying off the people who make the hardware that i need.
Why can't MS convince people to use Windows 10/11 by making the OS actually G-O-O-D. Why do they have to sabotage all alternatives instead.

already covered this, dumbass look here

Did it every occur to you that people that are more privacy oriented and use win 7 over 10, would you know... not participate int he survey that gathers SHITloads of data about your pc and the programs you use?
No? never, never occurred to you? moron.

      this
the dumbasses who install later versions of windows are exactly the kind of moron that participates in steam surveys

Like I wouldn't mind giving them my CPU, GPU, RAM, monitor resolution and operating system.
But they pull so much more than that, they pull literally every applicaiton used on the pc and bunch of more data its so fricking invasive it's not even funny.

Valve had the hindsight to know this shit was coming so they started investing in Proton a few years ago. At this point a fair amount of games work well on Linux and there is even a site for it:
      https://www.protondb.com/

However, if you want to play some obscure titles or some obscure consoles on emulators that don't have Linux support, you might be better off setting up a Windows VM.

It was a meme a few years ago. Then you had to make a deliberate decision "I like Linux more than I like having all games readily available". You still had stuff to play, it was just limited, unless you dual-booted.
Now it's actually good for the most part, there was a genuine breakthrough, but people are working on years-old knowledge because they tried to install Linux once in 2010 and things didn't work immediately then.
You still might run into issues occasionally or need to tweak things, but this is more of an exception than a rule nowadays. 100% compatibility is probably impossible because every game does things like rendering in its own uniquely wrong way, and there are always going to be Japanese games that seem to hit the exact sequence of obscure Windows bugs that cancel each other out, but most stuff just works out of the box, and if you spend like an hour installing Proton GE to sidestep video code patent shit and then half an hour looking through ProtonDB advice if something doesn't immediately work, you can probably play your entire library. So it might be a bit of a compromise still but a really small one by this point.

        Anonymous

        >and there are always going to be Japanese games that seem to hit the exact sequence of obscure Windows bugs
Can't you just install XP VM for those?

          Anonymous

I guess so. I was talking from "use purely Linux" standpoint.
Though graphics in VM are pretty slow unless you do GPU passthrough, and it will obviously consume some resources to run. If you do GPU passthrough, I think you can play whatever, but I never tried.
Might not matter for XP-era games, though, but it probably depends.

i have a theory that the cumulative time wasted dealing with MS's security bullshit, slowdowns from scans etc is greater than the amount of time it takes to just restore your box from a backup on the off chance you get hit by the elusive and vague 'malware'.

Because most of those security risks now operate at a kernal level.
It's like 90% certain your machine is part of a botnet and you wouldn't be any the wiser because it has pretty much full access to your system's root, and falsify it's presence on task manager, integrate itself into basic functions of your machine, and skim off your machine's resources without you really ever realizing.
If you don't care about that, so be it, just know you're sharing your computer with someone else, probably.

well, steam + proton works well enough honestly. But there's always some random god damn config file that needs to be babysat, or slightly 'off' behavior that feels less polished than windows.

overall it just comes across as if the devs just assume you know how to apply the duct tape needed to keep everything running. use debian/centOS for work, but it's all CLI.. the xorg stuff is still not ready for primetime.

i will never install windows 10 or windows 11 because:
    a. i absolutely hate the UI for both
    b. classic shells still do not run like w7
    c. i do not want my data harvested by microshit for any reason whatsoever (the big one)

nothing that anyone says will change my mind, and the tactics of forcing game developers to use dx12 which would work on w7 if microshit had not deliberately altered it to make it NOT work on w7 as a method of forcing people to downgrade to w10/11 only disgusts me and makes me look down on microshit further, as does their other market manipulation tactics like forcing upgrades on machines that werent really monitored then claiming them numerically to inflate usage stats, buying out and coercing pc builders to make sure w10/11 is the only option for prebuilts (not that i use a prebuilt but a LOT of people do), and so forth.

i dont like that i cant play things like hogwarts: legacy, yakuza judgment, or death stranding

but my disappointment at not being able to play games that use dx12 only is never going to be greater than my desire to keep my information to myself and have an actually functional UI on my OS. its just not.

Yes I am aware of the irony with posting a nintendo affiliated director as a reaction image.

still on 10, looked at 11 and got to the part where you cannot ungroup task bar items, and yeah, that's not going to fly.

But in all spheres we seem to be sleep walking into more top-down control (government, politics, media, etc etc) and less freedom of actual choice.
      it's frightening.

Valorant is the worst Riot game and it's not close. The team behind it are the most woke soi homosexuals by far and the game is a twitch shooter so it's full of underage by default.
LoL is old and neglected but I'd still rather play it over Valorant.
The actual good Riot games are TFT and LoR.

Friendly reminder that people whining about your data being stolen are probably American and it's been legal for your ISP to sell data off to whoever they want to for the last two decades. There are literally companies built to both monitor your ISPs web traffic and this is why Americans can receive cease and desist letters for just using torrent programs. Whining about the OS and sitting on Windows 7 or XP or whatever is a sign that you actually do not give a frick about privacy. You are not working to fix the issue, you are complacent and rotting and moronic.

these are the issues i have had the past few years on the VERY EXPERIMENTAL builds
-delete key will often not function in explorer
-there used to be an explorer memory leak
-they will sometimes force install a very experimental nvidia driver
-firefox used to have issues with dev builds at times
thats about it, nothing that really concerns gaming.

nope, when I've upgraded from XP to 7 i was unpleasantly surprised with DOGSHIT UI responsiveness on 5400rpm hdds, everything past XP is unusable on HDD. Win 7 also had some fair share of knows bugs, but I'm still windows 7 user knowing its +/-, but when you say about 'upgrade', I'm facing yet another choice between dildo and dildo (or linux I guess).

My Win7 is 10 years old at this point and outlived your Win 10 is last version shit, now they released Win 11 turd with more experiments on poor users.

Can they just make Windows Stable or smth with BS removed that just works without those experiments? I'm not your monkey to do UI experiments and you even want me to pay for this horseshit!?

LTSC is typically for shit like hospital machines or kiosk's that don't need any of the typical Windows shit, they're meant to just do their job and last forever while still offering support for software that runs on Windows. So if you want an official LTSC license expect to pay four digits. If you want a pre-activated one, there is a solid chance it is going to of been activated by KMS regardless.

Windows 7 user dilemma after extended support ending:

    Turd #1 - win10, or Turd #2 - win11.
I'm not even talking about MS account and ridiculous PC hardware requirements, like everyone is hipster running new and cool Ryzen 7 + 3060, while reality is very different, you have enormous amount of old PCs that will not be updated, 10 years old PC/laptop is common.
