In a vacuum, if somebody were making a fantasy setting and decided to create this character as one of its denizens, there would be no problem so long as she doesn't screw with the logic of her reality.
    So let's think about this:
    She's black -
If she is ethnically diverse from the local population, one must explain how she got there, what she's doing there, and how she is received by the locals. And it all has to make sense.
    She's a woman -
Is it common in this world for women to take up the arms and don massive pauldrons? If not, what makes her different from other women? Is this some kind of Mulan situation? Is this like the real world, or is physical strength distributed equally among the sexes? If not, is she enchanted or does she have superpowers of some kind?

If you can answer all of these questions in a way that makes sense, then you are ready to take the next step, which is to ask yourself why she looks like the gay black dude from Revenge of the Nerds.

It's worse than that. The game literally has healing magic that mends and restores lost flesh. There's 0 reason she should be without an arm let alone a blind eye. The devs who designed her clearly ignored all the established lore of both game mechanics and the world itself just to create a character that fit their diversity points checklist. WoW is a lost cause and will never ever be good again. not that thisd character was the nail in the coffin, not by a long shot, but it's a pleasant reminder for those who've already quit to never bother coming back. Any MMO that cannot respect it's own world-building is not worth the investment required to enjoy it.

How do you discuss politically charged things without sounding politically charged?

  29. 7 days ago
    Anonymous

    >why a character design like this in a fantasy environment is a bad thing.

    >Missing Arm
Why is she missing an arm when restorative & regenerative magic has been consistently demonstrated to be fairly common place at her level of prestige and nobility. Especially considering the fact that Azerothian Humans very much express their faith with "The Light" through physical manifestations of beauty, health - Uther was a Paladin for effectively his entire life and while he was in numerous conflicts his body was almost completely unblemished due to his strong faith and devotion.
Additionally, while there are cultures in World of Warcraft that deliberately replace their limbs or install prosthesis; such as Gnomes, Dwarves, and Orcs, they do so for very deliberate culturally-specific reasons. Gnomes are vaguely transhumanist, Dwarves seek an ancestral return to a state of silica/returne to rocke, and certain ethnicities of Orc cut their main hand off to display loyalty/toughness.

    >Black Person
Blizzard never really stated where Human ethnicities come from in Azeroth. World of Warcraft has spent a lot of time developing a lot of interesting cultures and ethnicities, look at the diversity present within the Orcs: Blackrock, Mag'har, Mok'Nathal, Dragonmaw, etc.. or the two other Dwarven races Warhammer and Dark Iron.
Azerothian Humans directly descended from Vrykul who migrated from Valgarde in Northrend down south to the northwest coast of Lordaeron at 'Tyr's Fall' before moving into the interior of the continent and multiplying in great numbers across Arathor and Alterac - the homeland of Humanity. Eventually Humanity would migrate further south due to competition from Forest Trolls and other Humans, but the point is all those guys are white.

I guess my other complaint would be that she's just another character perpetuating the endemic issue that 'modern' WoW characters just aren't very cool. "Woke Tropes" aside Blizzard has had a serious issue with seemingly creating characters either in a vacuum or just writing them in books/novels that we're supposed to read and then just not doing anything in-game to justify them?

I googled her and she's supposed to be a descendant of Anduin Lothar? A distant relation or some such? And that's supposed to endear us to her, but as a Warcraft enthusiast I never really gave a shit about who was related to who. Pic related is easily the most iconic picture of Anduin Lothar: it's Anduin leading what remains of his people, orphan in hand, up north to seek refugee and assistance in Lordaeron after he had failed to repel a literal entire fricking planet of Orcs from besieging Stormwind. Anduin crosses the content, is accepted in Lordaeron, and proceeds to make a very convincing case that: Orcs are real and they should go down south and kill them. Anduin then proceeds to rush back into the frontlines to kill more Orcs - I think he gets his head crushed by Doomhammer in Blackrock Spire, but his impact on the war was substantial.

Anduin Lothar isn't inherently very cool: he's like a 64 year old Human Warrior by the time he's dead and legendary, but he's cool because of his numerous likable qualities that make a good hero: chivalry, kindness, determination, patriotism, etc.

Establishing interesting characters takes work - is the intelligent thing I'm going to say. It takes work and an ability to connect with people and actually understand what they like. Faerin can be as black, crippled, blind, speckled, as much as she wants, but those don't really make a character interesting. That doesn't really speak to the content of her character.

A lance is a cavalry weapon. It looks stupid and impractical for infantry. Give her a normal spear if you want, but not a lance
The shield hanging from a hook in the pauldron is difficult for me to suspend my disbelief. I would have preferred a prosthetic or a stump arm

      >3. I don't mind having disabled characters in games but they would be baggers most likely in that setting.
The funniest part is that this character has canonically had a dwarf offer to make a prosthetic for her that could wield a shield and she refused because "muh identity" and some gay shit about how she's had one arm her whole life.

If I was an amputee I'd find this insulting, of course I'd replace my arm if I fricking could.

        >this character has canonically had a dwarf offer to make a prosthetic for her that could wield a shield and she refused because "muh identity"
If this is true then it's inexcusably bad characterization for multiple reasons for weak pandering reasons that aren't even real
She has an immensely dangerous job where only one arm is a fatal detriment. Unless she has a death wish and only wants to die as a martyr, she would gladly accept a prosthetic, simply because it allows her to serve in this dangerous and self sacrificing duty more efficiently.
Maybe Blizzard perceives this as bad optics because the disabled gaymers in the audience would feel alienated by her because suddenly she has something they want but can't have and she is supposed to represent them. Artificial limbs are becoming more and more commonplace as the technology is advancing, and a fictional character with perfectly functional prosthetics is in my opinion more hopeful for cripples because it is something to hope for and aspire to in the future

Warcraft's entire internalized logic baffles me at times. People have physically met gods, the gods who created them, seen other civilizations, mastered FTL travel, can grow life by tossing a bunch of sparkles everywhere and terraform entire planets or traverse time and space.

Yet people still live in mudhuts in destitution and poverty in Stormwind and Orgrimmar, the Gnomes still haven't retaken their home, nobody on Azeroth has tried to colonize another planet to boost population numbers for another inevitable end-of-the-world scenario and so on.

The real answer is because Blizzard doesn't know how to advance the actual world. Cataclysm was the closest they ever got and they'll never do anything like it ever again. The game is so married to it's foundation that we'll never see a paradigm shift that actually fixes or advances the plot. It's why people like me will actively suck FFXIV's dick for free because at least THAT GAME has plot-lines that end with actual world development, and minor stories like tribes or races that lost land go back and actually reclaim it as side-quests after the main story.

If somebody asked me to make a parody of modern fantasy character design, I would come up with someone like her.
The only thing missing is her sitting in a wheelchair, but I would then risk making her make a little bit of sense because at least with some wheels she could charge someone with a lance.

Basically, she is the sparkledog of fantasy designs, right down to the OC DONUT STEAL character origin.
