Wolf 3d is fun as frick

If it looks the same to you, then you didn't get far. This is the Lawrence of Arabia of shooters. The Salieri to Doom's Mozart.

Not even close. Doom does not have the same suspense. I would face an Archvile gotcha before a nest of Gustavos.

The gunplay is fun. Too bad the levels are absolute fricking shit to explore and the map is next to useless. Fun combat let down by utterly boring level design.

ive only played a couple hours of ep 1 but i am getting kinda sick of it. so far the maps mostly look the same (some variation e.g. wood paneling or brick) and it's real easy to get lost. I like it but dont love it.

I just do a couple levels per session, no saving midlevel. I agree that it can look repetitive, especially when you're humping the walls for treasure, but there's a nice tension knowing you have to proceed carefully. Close range shots are instakill like irl so you gotta check your corners.

      >Close range shots are instakill like irl so you gotta check your corners.
You can survive a close range shot in real life, just as a long range shot can be an instakill

Shooting up close one has a better chance of hitting a vital organ you dumb frick
Every 1hit kill in 3d might as well be a headhot. In Doom there's no difference if the fireball hits from a mile away or up close, and hits are the same except for the crazy shit like rockets and 'vile hellfire.

The point was that the phrase "Close range shots are instakill like irl" is very inaccurate as a close range shot irl is not at all guaranteed to be an instakill. It also implies that a shot that is not close range wont be an instakill even though it can very easily be so.

yes, getting shot in the foot at close range is better than getting shot in the head from afar. thank you, captain obvious. but i believe the point was that if someone is waiting to ambush you as you turn a corner, he has a much bigger chance of killing you than if you were running around at the other end of a long corridor, and increasing damage with proximity is a good way for such a simple engine to simulate this and add realism, as well as a sense of tension that the game otherwise wouldn't have.

They're different styles of shooter and both are great games. Wolf3D makes me carsick though, so Doom wins.

is there any mod that makes the hidden walls slightly more obvious? Call me a scrub all you want, humping is a stupid mechanic

Agreed. The use of sound is my favorite aspect of its design with its introduction of distinct enemy callouts when alerted, the way doors loudly open and add tension as enemies close in on you, and the way gunshots propagate through rooms to wake up some enemies but not others to allow for ambushes on unaware players. It's a very intense game as well despite its limitations because, although BJ can move at the speed of light to reposition and his shots stun every non-boss enemy, he's a glass cannon that can be melted in a second, so you have to stay focused at all times and bottleneck the more overwhelming encounters. It's simplicity betrays its unique style of combat, and it's so much fun. The last couple levels of Episode 6 really do it for me.

Reminder to play the 3D0/Mac version

for me, it's the Jaguar version.
it has less levels but i prefer the sounds and look of it. the music is the original one too. i don't like the look of the Mac weapons and HUD. the music and sounds even less.
the Jag port has been developed by id themselves.

It was never about realism. It's always been about having interesting gameplay mechanics with a fun risk/reward ratio.
