yes but just avoid all the skits. They're, at best, pointless time wasters and, at worst, actively insulting you by having Noctis remind the party about Shionne's thorns for the billionth time

      >Noctis
Lmao yeah it's kinda jarring that he uses the same voice as Noct when his take on that vampire from WoW is quite distinct.

      Worth a playthrough?

For 1 playthrough, maybe. The story is shonen through and through, my own fault hoping too much because my first impression was good.

No it's shit and killed the Tales Series
    Play Berseria or Vesperia instead

It’s worth playing the first area I guess, that was the best part for me. The skits are fricking awful, the story is formulaic nonsense, it’s just not a very interesting game

I finished it a few days ago.
Not long ago I read a comment around here saying that Arise was "westernized", and I have to agree with that person. In some ways this Tales of is westernized.
The soundtrack is amazing, one of the best in the series.
In English audio is fricked, I don't know if the voice actors had to record their lines at home or what, but the quality is disappointing.
Gameplay is great, but some enemies and all bosses are sponges. I like to play Tales of in hard, but during boss fights I'd switch to normal because smashing buttons for half an hour isn't fun.
I liked the story and the characters, but it has some weird plot holes.

Should I play normal if I've never tried the series or is hard fine?

Hard is fine, but boss battles in hard are simply tedious.

Gonna play it since its on gamepass also the fem MC is so fricking hot

        She (canonically) has sex.

As somebody who grew up playing Symphonia and who has played almost every title in the series, Xillia 2 is the only genuinely great game in the franchise.

I liked it until they pulled the moronic no Rinwell you can't kill her or you'll be just like her on a boss after we had already killed a bunch of people.

It's the game that makes Vesperiagays, especially Vesperiagays, seethe because it's the first Tales game in a century that everyone bought.... including normies. It wasn't suppose to beat the king, Vesperia. How could everyone let this happen?!?! Outrage!

yeah it's pretty overhated. i played it twice and although i agree it isn't perfect i found it pretty enjoyable.
my biggest gripe might be the combat, but everybody already knows that the REAL gameplay lies on the fishing minigames

Every single Tales game isn't perfect. For example Ganker loves the frick outta Beseria but everyone knows Beseria has some huge backsteps in terms of combat. But let's ignore all of that and just simp for Velvet.

it's because these games have been out for years now and there's little to discuss that people haven't already, mainly the stuff that actually matters like the plot and characters. so gravitating towards waifuposting is what usually happens.
the thing is, the only people willing to unravel Arise's ball of yarn are vesperia fans if just to feel better about the preferred choice of game.
as usual Ganker fails to comprehend that you can enjoy more than 1 game in the same series. many such cases.

Honestly I think it's just a case of "muh franchise became popular, but it wasn't muh favorite game in the franchise". I'm not saying Arise is perfect in any way, but the hate it gets is tied to the fact that it outsold every single Tales game in the last two decades and by now I'm pretty sure it's the #1 selling Tales game in the universe. When Vesperia came out the same thing happened, a lot of Abyss and Symphonia gays hated Vesperia.

              >muh franchise became popular
There is literally no way in which you can look at Arise and come to that conclusion unless you live in an Elseworld.
Normies got excited for Arise, bought the game bought but it had absolutely zero staying power.
Hence why there were no more Tales ports, hence why the only other additional content Arise ever got was a DLC which is 90% reused content, hence why you can find Arise figurines and goods for dirt cheap in Japanese auction sites.

How do you guys come to the conclusion that it's hated because it's popular which it isn't? There are plenty of people who bought it and then came to hate it cause it's completely lackluster. It's not even half a Tales game in size and butchers several aspects that the series already nailed.

Examples? I have never heard any content creator who touched it say, "Arise is lackluster."

I liked it a lot. Like sure it's nothing exceptional, but it's good JRPG comfort food so to speak. Definitely worth a playthrough. It makes Talesgays utterly seethe for some reason though. Maybe it's because it's slightly different from previous games.

      >It makes Talesgays utterly seethe for some reason though
Because over the last 20 years it's the best selling Tales game ever, and in the last 20 years all the hipster Tales game released. You can compare thier reaction to the MHWorld player base. Or the Guilty Gear player base when Strive happened.

It's honestly pretty boring. I know people hate Zestiria for being a by-the-numbers product pushing new ideas Berseria would refine, but Arise feels like an empty-hearted prototype for a bigger project rather than anything all that solid on its own. It's the same feeling I have with games like God Eater 3 / Code Vein from that dev team, where you can tell they have big ideas but not anywhere near as much budget as they wanted so it severely kneecaps itself in execution. Arise got more budget than both of those games but never really feels like it.

I guess the best way I can put it is it feels like the bare minimum of a Bandai Namco anime game pushing AAA.

Honestly kinda no unless you are really desperate for a Tales fix and even then it plays so unlike any other Tales game it's kinda shit.
