no
What’s wrong with Paper Mario?
I've only played the first one on N64 but I hated the pacing, way too slow. Dropped it early on. And IDK why but despite the cute world it felt soulless compared to Mario & Luigi and Mario RPG.
Been a while but I remember TTYD being much better in the pacing department.
Confusing posts to see, usually PM64 is known for being better paced since it's less heavy on story/dialogue and it has less backtracking in it's level design, the only slow bit is the prologue since you lack action commands for way too long which TTYD did fix but otherwise I'm a bit confused.. Also I feel like the world was packed in life with how Yoshi's Island-inspired the art style, enemies and world were. Not to say the other 2 RPGs are lacking at all but Paper Mario is my full cup of tea.
Do you mean that it’s an RPG or just with the Paper Mario art style?
It’s art and perspective is from Mario World, the gameplay goes more to Mario 64, and has some small rpg elements like in Mario World.
sounds like absolute shit mishmash of ideas. guess it would fit in the current market since all new games feel like that
That’s fair. But at least it doesn’t makes it bad.
You need to explain your ideas better. You're being beyond vague. I would absolutely be down for the exploration, alternate routes and secrets in Super Mario World, for example, but you're throwing in completely unnecessary buzzwords in the form of name dropping popular games. What does Paper Mario do in terms of aesthetics or perspective that Super Mario World doesn't? Not a singular thing. Super Mario World already has that cartoonish look going for it, and both games are 2d. Did you mean 2.5d? Because even though the game never tries to fully mimic a 3d space, it does emulate depth from what I recall.
Furthermore, what the frick does Mario 64 platforming mean, especially in the context of a 2d mario game. Are you saying that it's going to have wall jumps? What the hell are you on about? How is it completely inspired by Super Mario World then? Super Mario World had bullshit that allowed you to skip the whole level, and mildly challenging levels with fun gimmicks. It didn't have long jumps or anything like that. It was based in 2d and adding additional jumps was probably seen as gay by Miyamoto, which is why there's only the spin jump, normal jump, and the power ups.
Thats the problem with idea guys. They can only describe what they see from other games. They can never break down details on how the mechanics actually work.
I just don’t wanted to be specific because I was afraid of making a wall post. But here’s the idea then.
The game is based by what you’re seeing in the pic. It’s a 3d prototype developed by me and created as a way to make what I envisioned as a collectahon for N64. I had to scrap the prototype though because I had a huge problem with art, making many things not viable in the way that I wanted. After some opinions in Ganker as well it did kinda of seem to be a bit of a drag having to search for every star or gem in the map, so I remade the idea in three different parts.
1. RPG mechanics that go all centered to the exploration. Every time that a player starts a new level I want them to explore it, not move from point a to point b. That’s why it’s going to be a 2d sandbox per level where one can find as many secrets as they want while doing tasks, called gems shown in other collecthatons. At the same time, the player has the full liberty to pass through the world without collecting anything only if they discover the exit.
Instead of being divided by an overworked it is divided by a hub world, each leading to any world type that they want. Let’s say the sand kingdom or donut plain but with every level combined.
I already have an engine to run every of these things, but I needed to have opinions on what should I change and what exactly should be replaced to make a more fun experience for the player and also as a developer.
why does this need rpg mechanics?
are using "rpg" as a way to describe any level that isnt strictly linear?
Nope. RPG is to say that the player can choose an ending.
Frick your shit idea thread. I'm out.
TIL that the new fnaf game is an RPG
They tried Paper Mario as a platformer with Super Paper Mario. It sucked.
No I'm fricking sick of games inspired by older games. If I want more SMW there are a thousand awesome rom hacks. Give me new ideas.
I have this one that I’ve been saving to develop. A Mario 64 but in the style of 2d platforming while getting it’s bits of inspiration from Mario World.
I doubt it'd be as solid and perfectly crafted as World.
I'm sorry for your loss.
This. 3's level design absolutely murks World's.
How about make a new 2D Mario game with a new idea? I thought about a 2D Mario game where all the graphics are hand drawn.
How do you feel about a Mario 64 but 2d. Even if it sounds simplistic it can mix up with other genres.
What is it about mario 64 are you translating to 2d?
>2d tripple jump and wall jump
already done in mario maker
>long jump
alpha Starbound had a dash that you would keep your momentum if you stayed in the air. not exactly the same mechanic, but its similar
>2d aimable cannons you jump into
donky Kong country
>the atmosphere
make a concept screenshot in photoshop. is it infringing copyright? does it look like shit? are solid and background elements distinct?
>2d levels with multiple collectables
that is so generic i can't even come up with an example that already has that
That’s where the Paper Mario mechanics come in.
How can they be different then?
That's New Super Mario Bros. on DS.
?? How, that game has a flagpole like old Mario games.
so is the whole point of your game is that the goal is a star, not a flagpole?
Never said that. I was just pointing out something of NSMB.
When I say Paper Mario is that I want to leave some decisions to the player. Collecting something is not a goal, it’s more exploring the levels. Making it possible so that the player can beat the game by exploring in itself. Similar to Mario Workd but with more freedom in what one really wants to do. That’s why time is discarded as well.
your just describing a collectathon
Are collectahons bad? Personally they are my favorite type of games.
Just don't have any expectation that it will sell well.
The last time Paper Mario tried a platformer it sucked.
Its 2D Mario with Mario 64 moves: Triple Jump, Wall Jump, and Ground Pound.
effectively no one will be interested in that
Frick no. The market is absolutely littered with "inspired by" games, and not a single one of them is even half as good as the games they're imitating.
Just make super Mario 64 again and slap it all in dinosaur land.
Make a game where there's one single part in one single level where Mario refuses to help a guy because he's israeli.
Why the frick?
Nintendo already beats the shit out of the niche to begin with, it's already overworked.
