So can we finally admit ER lore and story makes zero sense because they clearly rewrote it billion times?

      [...]
Black person when people cannot even say why Marika shattered the Elden Ring - something that drives entire lore and main story - it's obvious they either fricked up or didn't give a frick at all and knew there would be shills like you defending it no matter what.

You absolute moron. Play any other From game. They all understood that main plot should be coherent and make sense and be a solid motivation for our characters. Lore can be vague but it also was clear there was a bigger picture and more info about the world Miyazaki knew but wouldn't make public.

With ER the feeling is that they just made up shit as they went and then did moronic rewrites over and over. The landslide of cut content is proof enough, but then you have stuff like Day 1 patch changing item descriptions and enemy placement or quests being patched in weeks if not months after release when people defended them suddenly ending as brilliant Miyazaki storytelling about how sometimes things just end without answer lmao.

The objective truth is that Elden Ring world and story make zero fricking sense and only blind shills think otherwise.

      >Anons still think the shattering has anything to do with Godwyn/night of black knives even though we're explicitly told Marika planned her revolt against the GW ages before all that
Come on anons, this is starting to become like thinking Gwyn was trying to cure the undead curse in DS 1.
Fromsoft always does this, the first "explanation" we're given which most people in-game believe is a lie/myth and the actual catalyst for the plot is revealed later in the game.

        Anonymous

The issue is trying to figure out what Marika gained by killing her own son. Ranni obtained a half-death that allowed her to escape the fingers control over her body.

The Black Knives took out a major proponent of the golden order.

How does this factor into Marika's whims? Obviously Marika's goal was to escape her other half, but we have no information on how the Night of the Black Knives factors into it.

          Anonymous

Personally I don't think Marika were explicitly part of the night of black knives, but I believe she knew about it and didn't really care.
For some reasons anons here seem to think Marika cared deeply about her children, yet we're never told that. On the contrary, all we're told about Marika from the people who actually met her make her out to be a cynical and terrifying person, and we know she was doing 4D chess stuff with absolutely no regards to anyone around her. I don't get why anyone would think she would be upset by Godwyn's death when he was the posterboy for the golden order/GW and she was seemingly incredibly disillusioned by that point.

            >I don't get why people think she loved her children.
Because the first layer of the story drums up Marika as the goddess she says she is. Founder of the GO, made everyone kneel, had a perfect son by Godfrey who was beloved by all and started the Golden Lineage.

Then for whatever reason, Marika flips personalities while another entity that is also her shows up and actually takes her place as someone who really shills the world she created while she contradictory, is trying to end it.

Point is, Marika is full blown shizo and where her and Radagon divide is incomprehensible. I've said it before, it's like Radagon and Marika switched minds.

              Anonymous

I think Radagon was created and, at least for the first parts, is controlled by Marika. Him appearing out of nowhere, going to Liurna and marrying Rennala to reach a diplomatic solution and end the only conflict Marika could not solve through military might, then fricking back home when job is done is just too convenient for her to not have anything to do with it.
Now they clearly part ways in their idea of the GW/GO somewhere after they married, but it's all headcannon at this point since we literally don't know.
I agree on the schizo part though, except instead of Marika being schizo inside her head, her other personality is literally a walking living man called Radagon.

Radagon has red hair symbolic of the fire Giants and his seed seems to spawn the most defiant of the demigods towards the GO. I really feel there is some inverse thing going on with that.

                Anonymous

I interpret the red hair as being an indication that Radagon is a product of Marika in some way. We're explicitly told that Marika personally defeated the Fell God but was cursed in the process.
Then we're told that Radagon's red hair is a product of that, but no one else is implied to have been cursed. The fact that his role in the war against the firegiants isn't even mentioned feels incredibly suspect to me if he was singled out to be cursed, so I take that as it being Marika's curse which for whatever reason only became visible in Radagon.

                Anonymous

I had a theory that Radagon's primary function aside from serving a role in uniting Raya Lucaria was so that Marika could be under the whim of the GW/Fingers while also not being under their whim.
Radagon takes the curse of the Fire Giants, Radagon takes the charge of the GO, all in Marika's stead. This way Marika can act independently.

The game explains that Empyreans seemingly cannot defy the Fingers that selected them without hacking reality like Raani did. A lot of people assume this control ends once you become god because otherwise Marika couldn't have shattered the ring.

I think they don't actually lose control though, that Marika created Radagon to allocate that control on to another person.

                Anonymous

I don't mind that theory honestly, assuming that Radagon is an intentional creation of Marika and her tendency to run these long-term plans it would make sense for Radagon to have more functions than simply a political tool for Liurna.
Aren't we also told that Marika isolates herself much more after she's had her children with Radagon to "study the GW and Elden Ring"?

                Anonymous

A lot of people speculate the piles of stone tablets in Marika's old chambers indicates she studied the ancient history of the world and saw flaws in the GW's Elden Ring hierarchy which could explain her change of heart.

We're told that her predecessor abandoned the throne (Palcidusax's goddess) but not why which may gives further clues to this process. I guess that would also be the one hole in the theory as the Dragon God was able to at least abandon its fate.

I really liked the way the story was told in DaS ESPECIALLY the lack of cutscenes over explaining shit but there has to be a line, having everything up for debate feels just lazy. Maybe hide answers behind difficult and/or "secret" questlines or maybe even in some whatever item description but by god put them in the game, its fricking infuriating.

I feel most they deliver on most things though, ER has by far the most fleshed out world out of any Souls game (though Sekiro is more coherent). There is some glaring voids where we don't know, especially around the nature of Radagon, but I feel that's entirely intentional.
                >Maybe hide answers behind difficult and/or "secret" questlines
I mean the HUGE secret of Radagon = Marika is exactly that, it's such common knowledge now that it's easy to forget you have to complete Goldmasks quest all the way to the end to find out about it, it's literally not mentioned anywhere else since it's supposed to be a secret in-game as well.
Someone going in blind and not doing his specific questline, which is fairly cryptic at times, would likely have no idea that Radagon is Marika.

                >ER has by far the most fleshed out world
It doesn't really feel like it, tbh.
Maybe once the expansion(s?) drops, we'll have a broader picture, like AoTA gave DaS.
Way too much of ER feels disjointed, and not in the way previous Souls games had been, where you can et a big picture view of everything.

                Anonymous

I don't really agree, of course it's going to feel a little bit easier to put things together in the previous games by virtue of how much shorter they are, but there's just such an insane amount of environmental storytelling in ER compared to the other games. Most of this is allowed by the open world, but there is just so many different locations and enemy placements, even enemies fighting against each other like in Liurna, Mt. Gelmnir or Caelid. We never had such pronounced factions in the previous games it feels like.
Like just try to travel to volcano manor through Altus Plateau and really take in how you can actually decipher the entire siege by the forces of Leyndell, and the death blight further in.
There's loads of cool sites like these with no specific text lore tied to it, but still showing the traces of some event having taken place. The older games for sure had similar stuff, but not nearly at this scale.

I think it's something like that except reverse, Marika is the original but to create Radagon she had to split her soul, and the part she created was the autistic order part.
After splitting she was left with Marika but completely removed the idea of Golden Order from herself, you can think of it as the process essentially being a cure for her GW brainwashing, so she started he plot against the GW.
Pure headcannon of course but I feel that kind of makes sense.

How do morons still think this? It was simply anger for the Golden Order failing her. The era of plenty had stopped because the tree was fricked and then her poster child was murdered after thinking it was impossible to do so since she hid away destined death. She had enough of an Order that failed her and shattered it in grief.

          >it was simply anger for the Golden Order failing her.
Anon are you moronic, Marika founded the Golden Order herself and it's a religion which worships her as the central god. The Golden Order is not some divine thing with power, it's simply the name for Marika's religion. It can't fail her in any way since she is it's literal God.
If you have this confused with GW then you have to go back and read the lore closer.
          >The era of plenty had stopped because the tree was fricked and then her poster child was murdered after thinking it was impossible to do so since she hid away destined death. She had enough of an Order that failed her and shattered it in grief.
This is literally "Gwyn is trying to cure the undead curse" tier surface stuff. The very existence of the player character immediately destroys your theory anon, do you even know what the Tarnished or what their purpose is?

Well, from the DEEP lore of the game we know that there are gods that reside in the outer plane and that the lands between first had the great tree as their primary religion/source of power. Golden order comes down and takes over, appoints marika as basically a puppet of the elden beast that will interact with mankind on the god’s behalf. She wages war across the whole continent an tries to snuff out the influence of any other outer gods, but that obviously doesn’t work. Her first kids are omens, probably cause the tree got mad and wanted payback for hijacking his spot and then she removes death and yeah I actually see your point this shit get confusing

I largely agree with this post and I've been playing these games since DeS.
None of the other games were hard to understand. If you cared you could easily put together the main narrative and the supporting ones. You might miss interesting tidbits that would get pointed out to you here or in /vg/ but the broad strokes were always easily grasped.

ER is a marked pivot away from that. Any honest lorehomosexual would tell you that.

Because she canonically had dozens of children. All the demigods are her kids, including the time when she was Radagon and fricked Rennala, and all the soulless demigods and the Omen in the sewers.

Radagon is a part of herself that she split off possibly when she got cursed by the fire giants thus is red hair. Look at their soreseals. One levels up one set of stats while the other levels the other set. No overlap. Two separate parts that make a whole being. She wanted to shatter the ring and realized she needed to recombine with radagon. Melina has dialog regarding this when you first sit in her throne room.

Also something about Radagon's seal being a thing that plants grow on while Marika's is a politically correct fantasy crucifix.

"In Marika's own words. O Radagon, leal hound of the Golden Order. Thou'rt yet to become me. Thou'rt yet to become a god. Let us be shattered, both. Mine other self."

This implies they are separate and marika needs to be whole and combined again to shatter the ring.

Game has a duality theme. The two D's for example, are twin brothers that have the same exact soul. When D dies, his brother's body activates and carries on the feud with Fia.
It's easily understandable that in the setting two can be one, but the big question is why Radagon exists and whether or not they always shared the same "body" or if at some point they were like the double Ds.

      Anonymous

I like to think of it as a symptom of regression.
      >The fundamentalists describe the Golden Order through the powers of regression and causality. Regression is the pull of meaning; that all things yearn eternally to converge.
I imagine that things are gradually collapsing back into the One Great. Disparate people, places, and ideas are converging. Back in pre-history, Marika & Radagon would've been closely related within the One Great, so as this convergence begins, they are one of the first people to rejoin. Also perhaps because of Marika's divinity, they are affected by it differently or were able to foresee it happening where others might not be aware of it. Perhaps this convergence ordinarily takes place during death and birth. Two souls return to the Erdtree, one converged soul comes back out much later.

But this is all headcanon. Maybe the DLC will clear things up.

        Anonymous

Marika was Regression, things being made to kneel to the GO. Radagon is Casuality, stalwart in the dictation of how the GO carries out law.
It's like how even the GW is Causality while the FF is Regression.

I'm just gonna ask here: what's the deal with Goldmask's appearance/clothes?
His skin's color looks draconian-like, you can find another mask just like the one he wears and the wormfaces have similar clothes to him.
This guy is a real mystery.

      Anonymous

The Wormfaces in general are a mystery but most people think they're some kind of mutation caused by the deathblight.
It would explain why there are Altus dressed ones and then ones in Farum Azula who wear different clothing (As the deathblight is present there, likely a result of Maliketh).

I think Goldface is just a dark dude, maybe even a Draconian by ethnicity, who is immensely emaciated due to his Buddhist inspired pursuit of knowledge which often involved deep meditation at the cost of the body.

His clothing was in fact provided by his followers.

        Mutated (Erdtree) guardians you mean?
        That would make sense.

          Anonymous

Yeah they could be guardians. The golden rugs and shit aren't shown on anybody else but definitely look like they're in the style of people in the area.

They aren't those who live in death themselves as they resist holy damage, so I don't believe they're dead (Though the holy damage lore thing might be inaccurate as many undead things in the game don't have the aux damage bonuses they should)
Rather they're tainted by death root to an extreme level like other shit Godwyn is growing out, such as the death crab.

fwiu, you are brought back by grace. Most Tarnished stop seeing grace. Rogier, Boggart, and that cleric dude who follows Goldmask around all comment on this iirc. Presumably, once a Tarnished can no longer see the guidance of grace, they are no longer brought back by it.
