Xbox's New Update Requires All Gamers To Use 'Shutdown Mode' To Fight Climate Change

>Microsoft-owned Xbox intends to force gamers to power down to fight climate change. In a news post, Microsoft announced its campaign for "building a more sustainable future of gaming."

>The company says that it wants to become a "zero waste" company by forcing gamers to switch to "shutdown mode" that saves energy. If two gamers used shutdown mode for a year, it is equivalent to planting one tree, Microsoft said.

>By 2030, Microsoft wants to become a "carbon negative, water positive, and zero waste company." According to Ars Technica, Microsoft started rolling out the update on January 23. Usually, an Xbox goes into Sleep mode when not being used. But this uses a lot of energy - Shutdown mode intends to change that.

Console yes. But isnt pc eating more energy when starting up instead of waking up ? Also isnt it bad for PC to turn it on/off frequently during day.?

Yes, on and off in general is bad for pc parts because the expansion from heating and contraction from cooling when always powering on/off wears out parts over time. PC's last longer when kept in sleep mode instead.

So first they make completely shutting down your console as difficult as possible and now they want to mandate it? I honestly prefer shutdown not because muh climate change, but because I'm a tight fisted israelite, it's just funny how they politicise their moronic stunt like the dumb burgers they are.

Is this the usual misinformation thread?
Xbox was mocked by PSgays last year because the default mode wasn't the shutdown but the sleep in Xboxes (PS is the opposite) and the cool kids save energy now. Microsoft set every new Xbox to shutdown mode by default since last year. Now they set every console to shutdown remotely because a bunch of people don't realize it is in sleep mode. But you can still set it back to sleep if you want to.

The PS4 and PS5 have always defaulted to rest mode instead of completely shutting down.

The shutdown mode in modern electronics is the less than 0.5W mode. PS is in this mode by default while Xbox was not.

I remember seeing at launch that Xbox used an ungodly amount of power to stay in its rest mode compared to PS5, like 5 to 10 times more watts. Not sure if that's been addressed yet but they should fix that first.

      Anonymous

it had higher consumption at first but that's been addressed for a long time

their recent update allowed the shutdown mode to check for updates at off hours so you get the benefits of rest without using as much power

Actually hybrid hibernation does shut down your PC. Xbox only had the option of full shutdown or sleep before. This new mode works more like hybrid hibernation but it can also download games and updates while powered off still. The security co-processor on the APU is doing it now.
