There is azure, certificates, networking, virtualization, storage, active directory, replication, backups, orchestrators, scripting, automation, defender and security, etc etc, and each category has subcategories of their own. Everything fails all the time and people need to maintain and provide these services to customers and enterprises. MS doesn't give service to 1 laptop to some literal who, they have goverment and military deals as well.

If you look at Microsoft in the enterprise field, they are getting entirely obliterated by containerization. Literally every major application has been containerized, and the per-requiste for that is Linux. Only people stuck with tech debt they can't fix are using Microsoft Server at this point. The only thing they can that is actually useful is Active Directory user management. And as far as user desktop experience goes, they only are relevant due to game developers being stuck with Direct X. As a closed system, Windows' desktop are inferior to Mac OSX, and as an open system Linux is far suprerior. As SteamOS and Proton become more refined, eventually the gamer won't need to spend another $100+ on a Microsoft license and just be able to boot up a free distro that does everything and more than Windows.

The last line of this is delusion. Look at how many fricking years this shit has existed, and we're still not even remotely close to a competing os that will do what windows does: work out of the box with no fricking around, play games - all games, not just some games but just by default shit works - and then the other shit like play your movies and files and whatever.
It's never going to happen. Nobody wants to invest the money into creating that product, it will never come about

        Anonymous

If you had any historical perspective on Windows you would know it's often not just "worked out of the box." (especially if you used them in an enterprise capacity) That is the whole Mac OSX advertisement that you're using for Windows. Drivers have always been a nightmare, BSOD have always been a thing and are worse than ever with their "Opps something went wrong and we don't know :)" error message.
        >The fact that the Steam Deck uses Linux is also irrelevant
If it didn't use Linux, it would be at least another $100+ dollars due to having to have a license, so yes it is very much relevant. And it's also new and has already made major strides to making it easy to play games without Windows OS. It's only a matter of time at this point. Only die hard fanboys can't see this, and really a die hard microsoft fanboy has to be a fricking blind idiot by definition so it's not surprising.

          Anonymous

Nobody cares about enterprise, we're talking the home user market. Companies with IT departments can already use linux if they can be fricked doing so, the home user will not. Drivers have not always been a nightmare, relying on windows for drivers is not what people do they just get them with their products on a cd, get them updated via a 3rd party program that just scans and updates them automatically for you, or through something like geforce experience or whatever, whatever the program of the product you're using that just updates your drivers with a single click.
BSODs are for when something is wrong, the default assumption and default scenario for a home computer is that it is working correctly and nothing is going wrong. Troubleshooting a win problem or a linux problem is going to be the same amount of pain in the arse for the home user, bsod info doesn't even help the home user they have to use again a 3rd party program that filters that data into a useable statement. And that is advanced users who will do that, your average user will not do that.
          >The fact that the Steam Deck uses Linux is also irrelevant
I don't care about a handheld console. I'm all for a steam os, but it's not happening because if valve actually wanted to do it they would have done it forever ago by investing the huge quantities of cash necessary to develop one. They don't want to make a serviceable desktop os, they want to use linux.
It REALLY shouldn't be that fricking hard to just make a windows copy that does the same things, with the same no effort or knowledge required on the users part, and sell it. Yet here were are, years down the line, decades down the line, still just "making strides" and claiming "eventually" with only insignificant situational progress or progress reliant on the user to jigsaw a disaster together and troubleshoot every single minor issue when basic things do not work to show for it

            Anonymous

            >Nobody cares about enterprise
Except this is where the real money is being made. You haven't seen the pricing for enterprise Microsoft licensing if you think otherwise, and hence your opinion is invalid. Microsoft cutting 10,000 employees isn't just coincidental that no one is using them in the enterprise capacity anymore and that Apple with a little bit of Linux has moved into the regular end user space. Microsoft is really only relevant technology wise because of Direct X and Active Directory, nothing else they have is competitive.
            >Drivers have not always been a nightmare
Again, you are showing your lack of historical perspective on Windows to say something and not realize how moronic that sounds.
            >but it's not happening because if valve actually wanted to do it they would have done it forever ago by investing the huge quantities of cash necessary to develop one.
It's literally happening as we speak, what the frick?
            >decades down the line, still just "making strides"
You're being disingenuous if you think the kind of work being done has been going on for decades and hasn't increased exponentially due to Value themselves.

I work as a designer in an electronic corporation. The software that we use, which is pretty much what all companies use (LabView, EPLAN, PADS or some other similar program) have poor or little to no support for MacOS or Linux. Most embedded devices also run on Windows. Yes, even your microwave. I'm sure there are niches where MacOS or Linux can be used, but I've yet to run into them. I know of one person who is trying to create his own Linux niche in LabView programming but after 5 or so years this has gone practically nowhere.

The idea what Microsoft/Windows is going away overnight is a wet dream for crackers and hackers, but doesn't have even a single root in reality. Too much industry relies on it. The idea that all industry runs on Linux is a myth perpetuated by people who either don't work within the industry or were lucky enough to land in the areas where it is used. MacOS basically only works for office workers who send emails and write up documents or make presentations. They end up using Microsoft office software even on the MacOS because the alternatives are subpar.

                Anonymous

There's nothing inherent about Windows that makes LabView and anything work better on it. It was just convention. When convention changes, so will the OS.
                >Most embedded devices also run on Windows.
That statement doesn't make sense. You mean Windows runs on most embedded devices? You must be stuck in the early 00s or something if you think that is still true.
                >The idea what Microsoft/Windows is going away overnight is a wet dream for crackers and hackers
No one said anything about overnight in this thread.
                >The idea that all industry runs on Linux is a myth perpetuated by people who either don't work within the industry or were lucky enough to land in the areas where it is used.
Okay now this is pure ignorance. I'm guessing you don't realize that Docker means Linux and that literally every company has embraced containerization with docker having something like a 98% marketshare.
                >MacOS basically only works for office workers who send emails and write up documents or make presentations.
Again, another moronic statement. Mac OSX is preferred by every developer who develops on anything other than .NET

You are trying way too hard to will reality to conform to what you want it to be, instead of what it actually is. Do you work as a developer in the tech industry? Or are you just typing up things that you feel should be real?

I have worked in the tech industry since 2006. I also note how you have no more argument and have switched over to ad hominem arguement that I don't work in the industry. But really, the most telling thing about how ignorant you are is how you don't recognize impactful docker has been over the last decade.

To be fair, embedded systems developers move a snail pace so it's not surprising you lack any kind of context of current industry trends.

      >As SteamOS and Proton become more refined, eventually the gamer won't need to spend another $100+ on a Microsoft license and just be able to boot up a free distro that does everything and more than Windows.
Uh, they don't need to do that now either, but they still are. And that's because Linux gaming is and always will be a meme. It all comes down to convenience and people who are customers will pay for it. Using Linux is for hobbyists who want to tinker with shit. Most people don't. The year of Linux gaming has been just around the corner ever since the 90s, but it hasn't happened yet. The fact that the Steam Deck uses Linux is also irrelevant. It'd sell well no matter what OS it was running on, again, because of the convenience factor. And even then the Steam Deck does need fiddling to get things working in optimal conditions.
