Variants are amazing and are a highlight of EW. If you haven't cleared all the paths blind you're missing out on a great experience.
They're fun but the problem is that they're one and done.
Why is that a bad thing?
Because there's no longevity to it, and that's what an MMO needs. I love deciphering all the paths but once you've done all of the paths there's no reason to ever enter the dungeon again unless you had bad luck and need to grind out a triple triad card, or if you want to take screenshots since they're all very pretty and have nice vistas.
That's a feature, not a bug. I don't want to repeat the same content over and over for a year.

I do trials and normal raids daily because they're fun (unless I get lv50 hildibrand and a1n of course). But I don't want to grind fates/tomes for months and feel like I'm behind for missing a day, which is peak gameplay according to MMOfags.
Nothing wrong with having something to work towards, but i get where you're coming from. My friends who don't like MMOs, play XIV, so I guess it fulfills a sort of niche for people who don't like MMOs, but just want a persistent world and a story.

DDs are the only interesting trash mob fights because you can go at whatever pace you want and knowledge of trash mechanics means a good tank with good coordination can do crazy pulls while knowing which enemies need to be prioritized and killed/stunned before their untelegraphed fuck you kill mechanic goes off
I think they should have pushed it further with more variant actions or gameplay mechanics that you use to figure out the hints.

I agree. I think Criterions show promise, I just want regular Criterions to be more approachable for regular people. You know? EX-trial level? Then Criterion Savage can be actually Savage level.
And both systems could have more incentives strewn about to keep playing them. I think the basis for criterions is actually pretty solid, but it's just not quite there yet in terms of structure and tuning. That's just how I feel, though.

One thing I will say about FFXIV is it seems like there might as well not be classes, there are no appreciable differences between them compared to virtually every other MMO, and from what I've been reading they are doubling down on the homogenization more and more. Say what you will about other games, but at least it feels like a completely different experience from class to class, FFXIV lacks that.

Criterions are exactly what people wanted content-wise. The issue that some players have is that EW isn't forcing them into a grind.
They wanted Yoship to tie the relic to the new dungeons instead of making them a tome dump.

Why you ask? Because options suck and i want Yoship to force me to run the same dungeon and raid again and again just to get a new shiny weapon for glamour. Shitters who play the game casually and just do frontlines and roulettes should not be able to just get a relic by doing what they enjoy. They should suffer like i did in the past for ARR relics. This is what MMOs are all about. Pain and suffering.
Criterions are what some players wanted. Some other players (like me) wanted dungeons at the same level as easy extreme trials - something that could be progged in one lockout and casually recleared, instead of more savage content.
The format still has a lot of potential and I hope they improve on it in DT instead of sticking to their barely established formula for them.

Also, what with the main story from the very beginning of the game being wrapped up, there's certainly going to be a rough transition into some other form of storyline. We've killed gods and destroyed the big bads. Theoretically, what remains to challenge us? I think the game will keep going, but if it wants to continue being successful, they need to re-establish an identity going forward, and bring back player mastery of individual classes.

The challenge should always be overcoming the fight - not being the one guy who puts up with all this pointless shit AND getting the clear. I appreciate the effort that Koji puts into all of this, and there are some lines that work better in english, additions in the tooltips are neat too, but none of it can outweight the amounts of terrible translation for the vast majority of content. It had gotten significantly better during HW and ShB and I'm not sure why exactly that was, but ARR, SB and EW have absolute dogshit translations. And before anyone cries and shits their diapers, I can speak japanese, english, french and german, and the french and german translations are miles better than the english one.

I don't know if they were recording at home or reading the lines as they were presented with only 1 take but the post patch 6.0 Eng va's has been an anomyly. Yshtola for example sounded very bored.

FFXI is by and large a far, FAR easier game than FFXIV is. the skill floor is higher in XI but thats mostly due to system jank. the ceiling is far far lower. and i'm not even talking ultimate raiding here. FFXI trusts are far more ubiquitous and powerful than XIV's version, i don't recall any fight in the vanilla, RoZ and CoP stories that had any stronger tact than preplanned positioning and kill orders and stunbots
course maybe things changed. i played XI in the era when you threw black mages at everything and only 5 classes were allowed into meripo and you could use gil to buy nearly everything
FFXI is really more just about proper preparation and planning than about mechanical execution.

Funniest part of XIV is all the players use to make fun of WoW players for addon reliance. Now you have tons of pc players running ping fixers, one button combos and UI addons. Add to that there is no detection for MMOminion so all content in the game is cheated from triple triad and mahjong to necromancer and alpha legend this games even more of a addon joke then WoW. Atleast WoW banned players who blatantly cheated in arena and ran rotation bots every few months.

One of the things that made me start playing XIV was the fact that you wouldn't rely on bloat addons, now fast forward three years and everyone and their mom has 250+ addons that do everything from automating their rotation to add horsecocks for thier characters, even the fashion aspects of the game and emotes got completely thrown overboard thanks to the mods making a better job than square when it comes to adding emotes or fashion items.

It's running the same dungeons over and over, but the numbers are higher. That's it, change in mechanics? No, change in mobs or bosses? No, in placements? In routes? No. It's numbers go up. You played it on the easiest difficulty? Then you've experienced what it is on the hardest, mechanically except numbers go up so you need to over gear, get fully buffed, gear, gear, gear, min max the shit out of your gear. That's it. Mechanically it's incredibly simple.
You play the exact same dungeons you played during the expansion except the stats on the enemies go up per level and you do this so you can earn your weekly right to three slot machine pulls that may or may not have useful gear for you at the start of every new week. So you can't skip a week because in that week you skipped, you MIGHT have rolled that BiS item you wanted for months.

speaking of voice acting, is there some mod or way to assign languages on a per character basis? I like to use English on main, Japanese on alt, and French on a second alt and it gets annoying remember to switch it around. Unfortunately the language is system settings and not character so it doesn't appear the UI will let you so assign it.
