unfortunately no you can't. you need to play the original yakuza PS2 and ps3 games including the remakes on ps4 and the ps4 games including the spinoffs. also you need to play the jp only games with a guide including ishin and the psp games. you can skip 7 as that is pure shit and not a yakuza game.

Alright. But just to clarify, the setting is a Japanese samurai world right? I play as a samurai? I know you guys said it plays different but so long as it has samurai aesthetics, I should be happy

Yeah. It's a samurai story with a bunch of RnG characters assuming the roles of named samurai from the past. You don't need to play the other games unless you want the added affect of recognizing x RnG character playing the role of x samurai or other RnG references in the side content.

He meant "RGG". Ryu Ga Gotoku, the name of the series and the studio behind the games.

It's basically a samurai era action drama where the characters are people from all over the Like a Dragon series. For example
            >Sakamoto Ryoma
            is Kiryu
            >Okita Soji
            is Majima
            >Katsura Kogoro
            is Shun Akiyama
It plays like Yakuza 5, so it isn't like the 6th one or Kiwami 2 as it has the old engine and combat

        Newbie Yakuza-gay here.
Ishin is a spinoff game of the Yakuza franchise, and it seems to closely follow the formula of the pre-Like A Dragon games, as in real-time beat'em up in a small but dense "open world" city setting.

It'll obviously be jampacked with references, with all the characters being like ancestor doppelgangers of the main series and all, but I doubt that'll matter much.

If you want to dip your toes into the experience and have a good time, you should try Yakuza 0.
It's the prequel game to the whole main franchise, it's easily the most polished of them all, and the gameplay mirrors IShin's very close, with the 3-4 battle styles you can swap between and all.
Also, just to make it clear: don't expect a short, linear game about nonstop action. The countless side stories filled with character interaction and minigames are like the bread and butter of the franchise.

          >but I doubt that'll matter much.
It kinda does, kinda doesn't. OG Ishin plays on your expectations of the characters and typically rolls with it, sometimes doesn't, and expects you to like guys like Saigo and Katsura as soon as you meet them because it's Ryuji and Akiyama rather than the story making you warm up to them. It even uses Shishido Baiken in Kenzan and Okita in Ishin to trip you up a couple times because you know how Majima is but they pull a "Will he? Won't he?" deal with him constantly.

This is why the changes in Kiwami are kind of an issue for the main story if you know how those characters act. If you don't it doesn't matter.

          >Ishin is a spinoff game of the Yakuza franchise, and it seems to closely follow the formula of the pre-Like A Dragon games

because the Japanese name of the games is "Ryu Ga Gotoku" which means "Like a Dragon" in Japanese, when the games were first brought over to the west on the PS2, they thought "Like a Dragon" was a weird name for english audiences and just called it "Yakuza" instead

it's another case of western marketing teams being idiots who change things for reasons they invent in their heads, like pic related

Because the whole Yakuza / LaA thing is a localization mess SEGA's now trying to solve.
In case you didn't know, the LaD name is how the main series is know in the Japan (Ryou Ga Gotoku). You can't just go yelling around "OMG YAKUZAH!!" in Nippon, but some mystic name about dragons and shit apparently wouldn't have rolled in the States, so it was renamed into closest thing to a Japanese Mafia they could come up with.

With LaD7, the Western publishers finally decided to test the waters with the closer-2-OG name, simply because the gameplay was so vastly different.
Also, there were no Yakuza in 1800s Japan.

Incorrect. I've actually been to Japan. The locals are actually visibly shocked if you tell'em how the games are known in the West.

Ever noticed how you never play as a real deal Yakuza thug in the games? Kiryu's constantly running off / resigning / etc, and the "lol no1 died!" meme is already a well known. That's kinda the reason.

he's joking, this spin-off game has nothing to do with the story from the other games, it's just re-using the characters from the games as actors for a re-telling of a real-life story from a historical time period

this is one of a few Yakuza/Like a Dragon games where you can play them without playing any other games in the series and NOT be lost on the story, the others being 0 (because it's a prequel), 1 (because it's the first game to be released), and Kenzan (which is another spin-off like Ishin, except this covers Miyamoto Musashi in the Sengoku period instead)

yeah after reading Vagabond I got really interested in Miyamoto Musashi's story, and when I saw the Ishin announcement I actually got confused and got really excited because I thought they were remaking Kenzan
I really hope they can re-use Ishin assets and do Kenzan next, I've been wanting to play that for a while

            Moose

They were talking about doing Kenzan Kiwami around two years back in some interviews but they went with remaking Ishin for some insanely stupid reason instead of porting it as a remaster.
They also might not want to deal with the story themes of Kenzan when it comes to localization since it could cause some controversy if people in the west get thrown into a tizzy since the game doesn't make things perfectly clear when going into it what's going on. People made a point that Demon Slayer has the same themes and came out in the west without a peep but who knows what Sega is thinking.

              Anonymous

Why would they not localize it just because "the game doesn't make things perfectly clear"? There are plenty of confusing games out in the west.

Ishin Kiwami can be taken at face value and it would arguably be better because of the changes in Kiwami but like half the game is going to be "Remember these guys from the mainline games? Here's them as different characters in the past." Most of the Battle Dungeon cards are Memberberries, the new substories they added in Kiwami are strictly Memberberries for people who played 0, etc.

This isn't similar at all to GoT. GoT is samurai Assassin's Creed, this is a beat 'em up in a small hub world.

Like a Dragon Ishin is Ishin Kiwami in Japan. It's a remake of Like a Dragon Ishin which was Japanese only up until now and is changing a lot of stuff from the original game.
            >but I like the setting and lore of GoT so it's still good if I care about that right?
I mean kind of? It sort of expects you to know the history of the time period and only somewhat explains what's going on enough to follow the main story but has two separate chapters where you're supposed to know a bit of Japanese history to make any sense of what's going on rather than taking it at face value. It focuses more on the characters doing stuff for its own story than the history.
The side quests deal more on some of the more historical things like how the news spread, how people lived in poverty, how mail was delivered, how people got around, how foreigners were treated, etc.

If you just want a samurai game go nuts, just expect a lot of the side content to be aimed towards fans rather than someone jumping in blind.

The game does expect you to be familiar with most of the history around that time, since the plot is playing around the historical facts to create its own conspiracies and plot twists.

You only really need to know two specific things which I listed

You need to know how Ryoma died in real life and read up on Saigo and Kido Takayoshi.
                https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Great_Nobles_of_the_Restoration
The following is only if you want more context on a substory:
                https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Ships

Everything else is explained to you in-game, and even the things I listed aren't necessary but they will explain some events in some chapters that you are expected to already understand.

                [...]
The game itself has Haruka selling herself to a brothel so she can get money to pay Musashi to kill himself. The game doesn't make it clear she's not actually having sex with clients but is instead a waitress, it's just assumed you know how the distinction worked back in the day. It also starts the game with some guys enslaving some kids and smacking them.

Again, not a deal breaker to get a game released but since Sega is so worried about controversies to the point they cut Michiru out and are even censoring Ishin Kiwami a bit it's something to think about.

. The game explains everything else, and it really hammers home the fact that the collaborators are dealing with foreigners to get weaponry into the country. Even then I went into the game only knowing the general idea of how Ryoma died and came out of it fine. The Saigo and Katsura stuff makes no sense without context and is just them pissed off at each other until Ryoma takes them out drinking but you are kind of told stuff about Saigo as to what's going on with him so it's not too big a deal.

Kenzan's the one that needs no real historical knowledge to understand the main story of. It's very straightfoward and all you miss is some nods like fighting Kojiro on the beach with an oar.

I think this style of remake would be preferable to the usual Kiwami remakes.
      >basically gives the game a huge facelift
      >use the budget to touch up the already existing gameplay and other content
      >works for marketing the game to new players because it looks shiny and polished (normies are scared of older games)
Ishin Kiwami isn't doing everything perfectly, but I think it's a good middle-ground.

I'm fine with them doing it like this as long as they stop making unnecessary changes. Added content like the new substories is good and the quality of life changes for some menus is appreciated. The character swaps, card attacks on bosses, and card system outside of the Battle Dungeon are just stupid choices on their part. I can understand why they had to replace Kondo, Takechi, and not-Baba since they're based on real people, but everyone else? Even then their choices for both Kondo and Takechi are really poorly thought out.
They're like half a foot in the right directly, half not.

If I go to that Arena, can I go back to Ijincho?

As far as I remember, yes, you can just take the taxi out since they don't want to prevent you from changing jobs. You're never locked to a town and even if you are because I remembered wrong you go back to Ijincho the next chapter anyway since the Battle Arena is the only thing you can really do before the end of the chapter.

          >but everyone else?
Well, it's a good why to bring more recent players into the game because "OH IT'S THAT GUY." OG Ishin had so many characters from 5, it was insane (and it made sense as it was the most recent game at the time), whereas here, it's a bit more spread out and even. Not one game is represented way more than everything else, so in a way, you can make a lot more people happy. 0, 6, and 7 are the most recent games, two of those being the most popular titles with newcomers, so it makes sense to use character from those games to market Ishin. I'm not too torn up about the cast changes because at the end of the day, they are just representations of historical figures. I will say, not including Shinada or Rikiya is a missed opportunity, given how well-liked they are.

The problem is that Han, Zhao, and Mabuchi stick out like a sore thumb compared to most everyone else. Kuze is probably the smartest and best change they made out of all of them. The crazier thing is that while Ms. Tatsu's outfit is kinda flashy she still looks like she fits, and you can buy Bacchus being a foreigner with a weird outfit since Tom and Black Boats guy are in it. But Mabuchi and Zhao have modern haircuts and looks like Han has pure white hair in an espionage role.

Lao would have probably stuck out as well but surely he's a better choice than Mabuchi. I can understand not using Rikiya/Yuta because I think the VA is popular, but yeah, Shinada would have made more sense. Or even Tanimura since now they can use nuTanimura.

The issue with Kondo and Takechi is that if you have knowledge of 0 or 7 you instantly spoil yourself on the twists Ishin dedicates hours to setting up.
            Actual Ishin spoilers here:
Kondo is built up for multiple chapters as someone Ryoma believes is responsible for the murder of not-Kazama after the assassin died a chapter or two earlier. The twist is that after your fight and a bunch of other stuff Kondo is revealed to be on Ryoma's side. By making him Adachi you instantly believe he's a good guy.
Takechi is built up over multiple chapters as being an innocent victim of the assassination and as Ryoma's best friend. They even throw Izo there to throw you off his scent. The twist is that Takechi was behind the assassination and trying to overtake all of Japan. By having him as Shibusawa you instantly tell the player he's a bad guy.

Hey quick question can you do the 'beat game on normal without switching to easy' achievements on NG+? Asking since believe it or not I got 100% on Yakuza 5 (even if it was because of keyboard controls letting you cheat in some minigames) and doing the platinum shouldn't be too hard if I get bored

Also seemingly expanding the soundtrack with new themes instead of remixing/replacing the tracks not counting the licenced music
There better be a sounds storm remix and it better be good

          Anonymous

I see no reason why the game wouldn't allow that. Just pick normal, try not to die too much, and you should get it no problem. Why didn't you play on Normal in the first place?

            Anonymous

I beat it on hard with only 1 continue I don't even remember so I'd be able to do it fine either way, just wanted to know if I could do it faster

Frostbite sucks dick outside of good looking tech demos and multiplayer shooter games, and generally is hard to work on. Mass Effect Andromeda with Dragon Age Inquisitions are best examples of how bad it can get.

Nah, Ishin was a lot of fun and as long as you don't touch the cards in combat outside of the Battle Dungeon Ishin Kiwami will be more or less the same as the original based on all the footage we've seen. The only real issues it has by comparison is the character changes and addition of card movesets to bosses.

Yeah, the increased framerate caused the quickstep on PS4 to be double distance. They adjusted it for Xbox and PC as well, but on those systems, the quickstep doesn't go far enough.

The Remastered Collection in general is a mess because of the 60 FPS. 5's PC port was extra broken until they did a bunch of emergency patches quickly after release and now it's in a better state.

4's combat is bad in a different direction than 3. It's braindead because nothing has the ability to counter Saejima or Akiyama's most absolutely basic shit. I'll take your word for it, wasn't the catch that the Dragon style was the most effective against him? Or just in general? I hate that the game really wants you to invest in Dragon style, I can't put my finger on one good reason, but I didn't like it. Think I used rush in zero the most.

Dragon style is what Kiryu uses in the later games. Its why the style system made sense in 0 but not really past that. He was learning his moves and merges them into one style later on.

            >the port
Nah, CIA twin was already in the OG version

He could only have Dragon's Kiwami Heat used on him to knock him out of the regen. DoD is the best style in the game (and is Kiryu's only style going forward) and suitable for anything but even if you just fight the boss with the base three styles it's still a great time. You have no idea how disappointing that fight was in 1 after being angry at the boss before it. He barely even got hits in, I was always behind his back, and the amount of objects in the battle arena let you keep him down on the ground pretty much indefinitely, it was a joke. In K1 he actually puts up a fight and the items in the arena aren't as effective even with Beast.

Why would they not localize it just because "the game doesn't make things perfectly clear"? There are plenty of confusing games out in the west.

Kiryu beat up Daigo because while good intentioned, he was betraying the clan and everything it stood for. Kiryu wanted to put him back on the right path and steel his resolve. Kido was afraid to take his chance, but Saejima gave him the courage to do so. That chance, however, ended up with him betraying Saejima and the other heroes. All of the final bosses in 4 are people that the protags had faith in, but steered the path into the wrong direction. A combination of tough love and well-deserved ass-kicking.

It really doesn't take long to make the combat feel good, especially in Yakuza 4's case. You can almost immediately get the really good upgrades that make the characters more flexible. It's a shame they never really did that style of upgrades again for the main series.

what other counterpoint would they need? sawa's death epitomizes everything wrong with kuwanas shtick

There were other avenues they could have explored. Kuwana's whole spiel about what he's doing being a way to give justice for people where the law can't was a load of shit that Yagami could be have easily refuted when it came out that Kuwana was still killing people even after the families denied his offer. After that his entire justification is moot because he's in it for purely selfish reasons. Him saying that the families tacitly agreed since they didn't report him even though he killed the bullies anyway is extremely flimsy too.

But they did explore other avenues
I find it really unfair how everyone boils down LJ's story to "muh sawa senseu". it's liked the shut their eyes and plugged their ears whenever a scene with Reiko or Ehara came up.
Reiko's entire role was to show another flaw in Kuwana's vigilantism. She showed that even the families who agreed with Kuwana were left with a massive burden that would effect not only themselves but the people around them. Because she took part in the murder she nearly became a puppet Public Safety, and because she refused she was sent to prison, leaving her son to recover from his coma alone.
In Ehara's case it showed how through Kuwana's elaborate plot, Ehara's revenge became more about playing a game with the legal system rather than getting justice for Toshiro. Which is why Yagami is unable to sway Ehara until he shows him the recording of Sawa. Ehara was not only going to let himself rot in prison for a crime he didn;t commit, only to allow himself to get sent back to prison for the murder he DID commit, but he was also about to let the single piece of evidence of Toshiro's suffering be lost to time. That's what broke him and made him confess, he was reminded of what really mattered to him, getting justice for his son, not playing his part in Kuwana's game.
Both of them also tie in with Sawa's murder. Reiko is convinced to confess after Yagami reminds her that she was one of Mitsuru's classmates, and that she was murdered because Kuwana wanted to play the punisher. Ehara was convinced because of Sawa's recording of her talking about Toshiro confiding in her.
Sawa was just the one victim that Yagami had a personal connection to.

Kuwana killed the bullies only if the victim's family agreed to it. He didn't kill the bullies anyway if his offer was denied.

      Sandboxy brawler
You have a city, a main objective, and you can ignore this main objective and fight around the city, play minigames or complete optional small sub stories. Stories are yakuza drama with over the top twists and interesting characters

Small, focused sandboxes with arcadey action gameplay, tons of side content, and elaborate, Japanese crime drama stories that focus on different themes for each game.

I'm currently in chapter 11 in LAD. Where do I get weapons now? I haven't crafted anything. I only bought the ones in Chinatown. Even the armors. I had them since like chapter 5 because I went all in with the property sidegame. Should I start crafting already?

Also what are the best jobs for each character? From what I guessed on others which seems to be right.

    >Ichiban - Hero
    >Nanba - Homeless/Host
    >Adachi - Enforcer?
    >Saeko - Idol obviously
    >Han - Default job
    >Zhao - Dunno?
    >Eri - Dealer

Are there any jobs that they should go through first before going back to the best ones?

      >Where do I get weapons now?
Chapter 12 will give you the second best weapons for the default jobs because of the Battle Arena. The other second best equips are from PTH or minigame shops. The best weapons are made by upgrading default weapons/the weakest weapons for each job repeatedly. The crafting system is actually pointless and produces garbage equips most of the time, the Nouveau Riche Crowns are like the only thing there that's worth it.
      >Even the armors.
Best armor is from the dungeon unlocked in the last chapter from random safes.
      >Also what are the best jobs for each character?
Jobs don't matter on Normal, it's whatever you want ad everyone is viable in every job, you can even put the girls in solely attacking jobs and have Nanba be a melee class. On Legend it's
      >Ichiban - Hero
      >Adachi - Benched. If he's not benched then Detective, Foreman, or Enforcer.
      >Nanba - Host
      >Saeko - Idol
      >Eri - Dealer
      >Han - Enforcer
      >Zhao - Gangster or Breaker

        >Chapter 12 will give you the second best weapons for the default jobs because of the Battle Arena.
So basically I should actually get to chapter 12 now to get the weapons?
        >The other second best equips are from PTH or minigame shops.
I mean it would be nice to do Part Time Hero but I'm at the part where the enemies I need to get or even the items I need to get are not available supposedly yet.

How time consuming is it to get the best weapons? I'm fine with just having at least the second best. I don't want to grind forever in this.

Depends on if you've been skipping fights, doing minigames, and grabbing stuff in the park. You won't be able to get them until chapter 12 because 12 has the bottlecaps you need to actually do some upgrades and to make the best weapon it consumes the second best weapon. You can buy almost all the mats you need for the upgrades, only a couple are found in the dungeons/the park. You also don't need EX EX at any point, EX alone is more than enough for even TFMT and everything past EX was added because of the TFMT DLC for people who spent hours grinding out mats before it came out and/or were going into a Legend playthrough.

Here, the top two-third of this image are what you should be paying attention to.

        >Han - Enforcer
Why Enforcer? Isn't his default better?

Hitman is terrible on Legend. His Matrix Essence barely does like 600-800ish damage to all enemies and is resisted by a lot of enemies. Like 80% of his jobs moves are unusable due to accuracy checks, Head Trauma isn't as good as Paralysis Prongs, Double Shot stops being usable even with Hitman's high Dexterity, and while his best weapon does increase Agility he already gets two turns before any enemy so in a general battle (and even boss ones) the weapon isn't really adding much to his moveset.

Enforcer on the other hand makes him a bit bulkier, grants him Essence of Shield Bash which bare minimum does 1200 to all enemies and is typically not resisted and can sometimes paralyze which is amazing on Legend, and he still typically goes two times before more than one enemy gets their turn. If Eri throws a Shadow Stitch on an enemy or he lucks into a paralysis proc then he can proceed to use Paralysis Prongs without worrying about the accuracy check for like 1400+ to a single enemy.

I've liked them all and am looking forward to Ishin Kiwami, I just had some issues with things like FotNS, Dead Souls, K1, and 3 that made them far more annoying. Doesn't mean they're bad games.

I beat it on hard with only 1 continue I don't even remember so I'd be able to do it fine either way, just wanted to know if I could do it faster

To be a bit fair Han does stick out less than Kagahara and his giant-ass scar when he has the headband thing on https://twitter.com/ryugagotoku/status/1612585015405121541
I don't know what scenes have it off/on though

On one hand sure, on the other he's supposed to be playing a homeless beggar and a scar sort of tells you he's been around. Han still looks like a K-pop star with soft skin.

Nah, I've seen the Kiryu Figma at a comic shop in real life (It's horrible even for the $30ish they were asking) and have been looking into some t-shirts but my purchases so far are just the games.

I know of the YakuzaFan store if you want some t-shirts:
          https://www.teepublic.com/user/yakuzafan
I was considering the Ono Michio-kun and Sky Finance ones specifically.
0 and 6's collector's editions have their various knickknacks if you want to try getting those but 0's is mainly just for the novelty of the business cards. BP1 and BP2 also have first-press editions that came with stuff, I know BP2 came with a DLC card thing, I forgot what 1's was.

Wait so you’re fine with K2?
I always heard that was more controversial than K1.

I don't have major issues with K2 but there are definitely issues there. Look, I'm critical on these games because I love them, that doesn't mean I hate or dislike them.
The thing with the Kiwamis is that they're not really remakes that replace the original. Even Ishin Kiwami is the same thing though Ishin Kiwami's a bit more similar to the original than K1 and K2. It's worth playing 1 even if you played K1 and vice-versa, and the same goes for 2 and K2. There's just so much different content and the experience isn't the same at all.

            >Kiryu Figma
it looks pretty terrible but I'd still buy it for $30. i don't really keep track of figurines but I'm under the impression that figma has been getting better in quality lately so too bad kiryu got the short end of the stick if that's the case
            >0 and 6's collector's editions
Yeah I have those, preordered them when announced
            >t-shirts
not too keen personally, I'd probably sooner buy a print/poster but all the fanmade ones i've seen look like shit

Out of what I've played I like all of them but I have my own gripes with each of them, even with 0 'cause why did they make hostesses and the awful telephone club required to face amon when 5 mostly fixed that

I'm playing through 6 right now, and I've liked all mainline games for now, and it would take a disaster for me to actively dislike 6, I'm having a good time for now. I haven't played spin-offs.

That said, 3 was definitely an acquired taste, the game itself wasn't really good, it was mostly thanks to the rest of the series I've played through it.

The epilogues are clearly written in the 'present' which is why it says Majima "continues to play a role in the yakuza" and how Kiryu's "current whereabouts are unknown".
