I don't think Kiryu was gone for nearly long enough to make "KIRYU IS BACK!!!!" as a selling point. Just feels like "another one of these" at the moment.

Only if we could choose instead of being forced to swap the two play styles every chapter or two. I think Gaiden exists purely to give Kiryu a proper DE title due to 6's issues before we're stuck with turn-based for the main entries.

they came out and said explicitly that mainline Yakuza games are now every 4 years which wasn't official until recently but has been a thing since 5. but they're going to keep doing spinoffs and probably do at least one more remake/remaster although idk how well Ishin sold. Yeah, because completely changing gameplay mechanics for the final boss of a game ALWAYS GOES SO WELL DOESN'T IT??

none of the bosses hit the same as the brawler combat. it kind of killed the hype that's usually there. I'm not sure how they can remedy that with turn based combat. it needs to be a lot more dynamic than putting a blocking mechanism in. I think they're either going to revolutionize the genre (nope) or it's going to get really fricking stale. It would be okay if Y9 went back to a brawler if Ichiban became more than a scrub.

Oh come on, would work. First because this is the seventh game in the series, so most players will have some experience with the brawler gameplay. And its just Ichiban vs the mayor, the fight would be really easy (it already is in the turn-based version. Changing gameplay styles can be jarring, but is also really good when done for a narrative reason (see: MGS4)

I do think this game will probably be the one to give Kiryu a proper send-off, with a more happy ending than Yakuza 6.

It is hard to say, but I feel like the franchise is in a better spot with protagonists. The Kimura drama seems like it is resolved, so Yagami will probably continue on in Judgment as a subseries, while part of 8 might be Kiryu properly handing over the franchise to Ichiban.
They will probably still leave it open for Kiryu to come back at any point.

It sounds like it's going to be a dual protagonist story, so it will be swapping back and forth between Ichiban's team and Kiryu team, until the inevitable team up.

no that's actually a lot better imo. Ichiban gets to keep the homeless crew and Kiryu gets to team up with Saejima, Majima and Daigo (although given how awesome that sounds, it will probably be new characters that aren't as good). If that were Kiryu's team they could kill a t-rex.

People complain that the Yakuza real time combat isn't deep but to me the JRPG turn based combat is the absolute worst combat system, it's the laziest thing you can make. It's barebones, lacks any semblance of depth, the job system of those JRPGs, with the carry-over skills means that the jobs are essentially another layer of leveling and not really a well done class system with compromises, often lack a positioning system, and when they have a positioning system, it's just an extra step that you do with zero strategy involved (hello Trails in the Sky 1) rather than a system where you have to position your characters well and overextending can get you killed, etc.

To implement JRPG turn based combat is just to give up, you have to try very hard to make any real time combat system worse than that shit. I don't think turn based per se is bad, something like Shadowrun Dragonfall, a fricking mobile RPG of all things has a much more strategical turn based combat than most JRPGs, it's just the way nips do it that is lazy, dull, tedious, braindead.

Some businesses are poorly optimized, especially the highest-end facility-type properties. They require double of a certain type of employee (such as service), but there’s literally no manager that can cover for the other two types perfectly.

You can actually have everything maxed out on the best properties if you have the DLC, but without DLC you can't max out one specific type and that's it. The rest on all the shops including the final one can be maxed, just not that one slot.

the brawler combat isn't shallow, Yakuza 3 proved that. It's just that everyone fricking hated that game because they couldn't button mash to win. It's surprisingly deep combat if you actually read and use the techniques they provide, it's just totally unnecessary outside of Yakuza 3 since it's so easy to wreck mooks.

The game's logic is in 60 fps and basically double speed so the fluidity of the combat and how succinct the movement has to be was basically completely thrown out (locking the game to 30 fps doesn't fix this), enemies dodge way too much, block more than they should, heat goes down faster because of high FPS, quickstep into attacking the enemies back is impossible because you don't move quick enough, shoulder pick up is simply non-functional, gun enemies are bugged, etc.

You guys really weren't kidding. After looking up random posts on Google, a vast majority of the vocal gays never fail to mention enemies blocking a lot.

I nearly threw my controller out the window on some fights when I just started playing the remastered 3. Later I realized the game just does it so you don't do the same rush combo heavy attack finishers all the time.
Then the combat was fine. If you intend to go into planning to beast mode 0 style through it, you'll have a bad time.

                >Later I realized the game just does it so you don't do the same rush combo heavy attack finishers all the time.
It's not intentional. It's entirely because of the higher framerate. The game is supposed to play with this level of block frequency (More or less) with enemies with weapons and sumo wrestlers being the main ones to block frequently. You will get some enemies that block a full combo but the difference here is that in OG 3 they allow a full combo through frequently even if you're mashing on them. You can see the same guy at the end here block a full combo and then eat one immediately after which isn't something that can happen in the remaster, and most enemies will 100% block 2H weapons like bikes unless you start up a charge attack facing away from them whereas I got a sign to hit everyone in OG 3 immediately as I picked it up.

This is also on Ex-Hard by the way so the blocking frequency is at maximum which is why I'm sometimes getting everything blocked for a bit. Legend feels way way worse than this and everything I did here wouldn't fly on Legend in 3R outside of swaying behind the enemy's back.

I think that's one of the enchanted swords. Go to Mukurogai and go near the cannonball minigames. Near the Jizo statue down there there's a guy in white sitting down. Talk to him.

For future reference, the Magical Worn Sword needs you to get 100 kills with it (It's fine to just kill stuff with a gun in Wild Dancer) and then take it to the guy in order for it to become The Last of the Dragons.

Yes. 19 was worse than 20 on Ishin difficulty. As soon as I cleared it I dropped the difficulty down to Legend and it was basically impossible to die. The most they deal is like 300 damage whereas this is what I was dealing with on Ishin difficulty.

I went to that guy but he just keeps asking for mats for the Skink Lizard which I've already made.

Those are the only two ways to craft weapons in the game. If it's not in the smithing menu it's the enchanted sword guy. No idea what's going on then.

The blocking issue was still fairly bad on the original if you were on the higher difficulties but it was nothing like the remaster. It was super weird going from 3R to my PS3 3 save file to check some stuff out while I was playing it and none of the enemies blocked as frequently even on Hard/Ex-Hard whereas on Legend I literally cannot get combos out to anyone's front unless it's SSSTT.

I'm really dissapointed that we're getting Kiryu again, and seemingly as a main character. Seven was the perfect final sendoff for him, the passing of the torch. It set up Ichiban as his sucessor, it was incredibly effective in making people like Ichiban and giving Kiryu a final appearance in a game, and then they just throw it all in the trash because gotta have Kiryu right? Its really lame

What you're describing is one of several reasons why I think current RGG really doesn't care for Ichiban and is planning to scrap him after 8 and continue with Kiryu for all eternity. It doesn't matter how popular he is, the devs like Kiryu more.

I don't even care anymore. 4 was like a send off for him too, what with setting up new bloods in town and even including someone with no yakuza ties so he could be genuine hero for kamurocho. Then they made 5 like that.

Him not being Kiryu is exactly what makes him so perfect. He's a goofball, way louder than Kiryu, a Dragon Age nerd, and instead of starting off as a legend he starts his story at the lowest point of his life. He's the great underdog, a guy who didn't give up after life dealt him a shit hand and perservered trough sheer optimism, a genuine desire to do the right thing and the bonds he has with the people around him. Unlike Kiryu, he isn't strong by himself, his friends are his literal strength. He's the backwoods hero that beats the demon king.

I mean, even common goons in the Tojo Clan don’t know what Kiryu looks like, so it’s not that far of a stretch. People have heard of the Dragon of Dojima legend, yeah, but the average yakuza or thug have no idea what he looks like, as evident by the Kazama family (of all families) thugs who harassed Kiryu in Yakuza 3’s prologue chapter.
Even would-be ambitious criminal masterminds who want to kill the Dragon of Dojima and become the Yakuza King would simply stop at hearing he’s dead, and all their fantasies and plans fade away because they can’t think of any other way to prove they have big cojones.

Daigo and Watase have always known, or were at least the first to know. As evident by their reactions, Saejima and Majima didn’t know he was alive, but they had a bit of doubt about his death. Literally no one, asides from Seong-hi, knew who Kiryu was, he was free to walk around in his signature suit without being recognized.

Still, it’s funny that Ichiban had no idea who Kiryu is. He probably knows a Dragon of Dojima, but again, Kiryu isn’t as recognizable as Majima.

I just hope one of the reasons Kiryu is a secret agent is to find intel on the doctor who screwed over his former aniki. Nishiki got done dirty ONLY because he was desperate for cash to save his sister, and he never told anyone.
Granted, he should have told his captain since his sister was technically a sister to Kiryu as well. So they would have given him the money and let him pay it back later.
If the doctor is found, it'd be poetic for Ichiban and Kiryu to take him down together.

Nagoshi's departure, and him also taking some of the studio with him, obviously made things into a mess. I'm curious to see what Gaiden will be length wise, because they said it will be a shorter title, but if they throw out something with Kaito's file length for full price, then there is going to be some issues.

        Anonymous

well apparently they did say that Gaiden was the length of Kaito Files. Although I think there will probably be quite a bit of (reused) side content and a new city to explore so it probably won't actually be the length of Kaito Files but if you just rushed the main story it might only be 10 hours.

          Anonymous

which is fine imo but it's going to piss off a lot of people if they try to sell it as a full game for 40-50 or even 60 dollars. Sega very well may try that but it would be a mistake as this game is supposed to be the main lead in for Yakuza 8

If Sega was smart and generous, then yes, but since Gaiden is meant to bridge the sale gap of no main line new title, then they will probably price it at full.

          Anonymous

Kaito Files is too short, I really think Gaiden will be a bit shorter than 3 and 6, they said Gaiden will be shorter than your average Yakuza game but that also applies to 3 and 6.

            Anonymous

I never actually found the interview and it seems to get interpreted differently but this source is saying that it will be longer than Kaito Files. idk if that's just the main story or that they will be packing it with a bunch of minigames and side content, which is what I expect. With expert pacing, 10 hours could be more than enough but we will have to see how they frame it in the upcoming advertising material

              Anonymous

It would make kind of sense for Gaiden to have a shorter story, because it isn't like it can acutally resolve anything. Gaiden is just meant to set up why Kiryu is doing what he is doing, and possibly setup plot lines for Yakuza 8.

      How so?

You can tell how rushed Ishin! is by looking at replaced characters’ facial animation. Their facial animation does not sync well with the new skin at all. Almost like they just slapped a new skin over old rigging instead of properly re-animating them.
Example: Yamazaki Susumu (the dude with Han’s face in the remade)

          Anonymous

The Yakuza 0/7 character jerking is still better than the 5 jerking going on in the original, my sole complaint is the same as yours, which is Yamazaki being tailored for Kugihara who constantly does that crazed villain smirk as a gimmick.

Minor changes to minor characters were a mixed-bag… Shimano replacing Kanai was a great choice, Oda replacing whoever the real Ogita Soji was also felt great, Sera replacing Katsuragi was weird and felt like a disservice to Sera.

well he left Johnny's afaik and his games came to pc. the rumor was a 3rd game (and final) game was in the works but who knows where that's at. People thinking Kaito would take over kind of got that dashed by his own DLC I think. I also don't think he's strong enough of a main character but I also think that's Yagami's weakness in a lot of ways too. but at least he's charismatic and can hold a scene together. I would be kind of surprised if they just left it at Lost Judgment though. They might be planning another spinoff but I couldn't imagine what it would be about. I think Judgment was Nagoshi's thing.

        just quickstep behind
        just grab
        just use weapons
just bring a gun to double Komakis

why are you pretending enemies can't break out of grab and become unusable without getting behind them.

last combo hit will break blocks and deal some damage
        jump kick typically break blocks
        grabs
basic kicks typically go through, not to deal much damage but to bait their next move
        slipping behind their backs
that charged attack where you hold triangle/Y
also obviously combat is really designed around the komaki techniques and baiting for openings

Those moves that "break blocks" don't really. Technically it breaks block but it does very little damage and doesn't let you follow up for a guaranteed hit.

But yes, the way the games are designed, you are more meant to play defensive. ESPECIALLY when they put you up against bosses that can parry your own attacks.

The combat just isn't well made and I won't ever pretend it has any good thought put into it. It's a really bad beat em up in just about every way possible and it's never going to change. The judgement games give the players a lot of new and fun stuff to play with at least.

PC's missing the lighting effects on that scene entirely. If you compare the console versions to the PC there's no lighting from the fire or anything, It's just as if you were playing at normal night time whereas console has light from fire all over the place.

Mornings looks pretty awful. You have faces blown out, when you go into buildings the outside is exploding in pure white, shadows for some reason turn everyone into pure darkness, and it causes all wood to look like it's been just recently waxed or something so it sheens like crazy.
Evenings literally make everyone's hair turn into plastic black, their skin turns beige if not orange and it only gets worse in the shade, going into the shade causes everything to look disgustingly fake, the light on all the buildings looks unbelievably awful and makes wooden buildings look like they're made out of clay, and worst of all it makes areas like Mukurogai look extremely claustrophobic.

Nights are fantastic but the other two really bring the game down.

I think I saw you post a link or something about how to get seals before. Can you post it again?

          Moose

Didn't post a link, just steps.

Do Golden Sneaks first. They drop a bunch of them and you need to grind them until they drop "Square: Special Moves" since it's exclusive to them.
Do the Battle Dungeon after that, the weapons can come with Seals occasionally and you need to grind SS 4 I think it was because it's the only place that drops the Yoshiyuki which is the only weapon that can have Sphere Seal: Repentance (Strongest damage buff Seal in the game).

Then when it comes to crafting you gotta do a bunch of specific things.
          >Buy at least 20-30 Bundle Blades from the Rakugai Arms Dealer.
          >Buy the same amount of Silver Hammers from the Gambling Den via chicken racing tag funds.
          >Go to the blacksmith.
          >Save.
          >Craft 3-4 Keen Blades WITH the Silver Hammers.
          >If you didn't get a Seal attached to any weapon reload your save and craft a Keen Blade with an Iron Hammer and save again before repeating the previous step.
          >Once you get a Seal you need to count how many it took you to reach that Seal.
          >Reload your save.
          >Craft the Keen Blades the exact same way (I.e. if you used Silver Hammers you gotta use them the exact same way) until you're one weapon away from the Seal.
          >Save.
          https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vQEZgaBjsZHQyTZAxraQ4dtfjjwAeKQXjXEogTIhbJRLRjZEfZeOnrgjNP5h1utzvx0qF9YoxQT5iZP/pubhtml
          >Pick a Seal you want off of that list and then craft the item that can potentially give it to you.
Keep in mind that the Seal you get is seeded as well, so if you get an Attack on a weapon it will always have Attack when crafting that weapon every time you reload. You need to try other items to get what you were aiming for, and if you don't get it on all of them you tap out and make something else.

Just keep in mind, this sheet is not comprehensive. Just because Fighter's Binding only has Hemostasis listed does not mean that's the only seal that pop on Fighter's Binding. That also means it's possible that the Golden Sneak and Battle Dungeon exclusive seals aren't actually exclusive but I wouldn't waste time trying to get them through crafting.

Yeah, it's only what that one guy got through his 100% journey but it's the only real comprehensive list we have at all right now. No one's datamined anything either. Apparently Antidote is a pain in the ass as well.

              [...]
Is there an easy way to find Golden Sneaks?

You either do the OG Ishin method of equipping the Rogue's Mask, heading to Fushimi, and running up and down the left side of the center market area looking on the minimap to find single enemy icons or you go to Kamo River and look across the bridge, look towards the Love-Starved Husband, turn around and look ahead of you, then look around the corner there and if you don't see anyone you talk to the palanquin and check again. If you really haven't seen anyone then you take them to another area and return back.

Do your hunting at night as well, in the original it buffed spawn rates for them and it seems to do it here too.

Is there an easy way to find Golden Sneaks?

The only reason they used Unreal was because they made Dragon Engine to look good drenched in neon lights, which it does.

I'm new and confused. Are all 16 equipped trooper card passive buffs always active regardless of which weapon is being used or only 4 when I have that specific weapon out?

      Moose

The only passive buff is from the Corporal, everything else only grants you their Trooper Skill when you use the card.
You only gain the passive when the loadout itself is out, so if you are running Ichiban as your Corporal on Wild Dancer and on Swordsman you have Shinada as the Corporal, Wild Dancer will not get the damage or defense buff, and Swordsman will not get the extra slot or charge speed buff.
The HP buff you get from having cards equipped is shared across all styles, and the reserve decks also count for your HP. So even though you're not gonna use them they still gain EXP and give you HP.

you know thats exactly how the previous engine looked like anyway (5 and 0)

No, it really really doesn't. I've even been bouncing back to the OG Ishin to compare some things and mornings and evenings don't even look remotely as bad as they do in Kiwami. For starters, people don't have plastic hairs in the evening nor do they glow in the shade.

Because UE5 wasn't out of beta when they started developing? Nothing in that engine the game would have benefited from anyway. They just threw in old assets, upscaled/replaced some textures and called it a day.

I'm clearly talking about the visual direction and overall sense of atmosphere, even if the word apparently triggers some of you homosexuals, it's just really fricking blatant. Here's another word that'll likely also trigger you gays: SOUL. Original Yakzuza had it. It had attention to details, it had passion, because it was a unique game, instead of being a cashcow to be milked yearly. The writing may be goofy but the way it's visually conveyed is still way above anything in the more recent games.

Yakuza series must be the only series where the loudest fans apparently really despise its roots while celebrating its artistic decline.

yes because we know rgg excelled at writing hard boiled crime dramas with such classics as "le everyone is korean" and " le guy who has access to every camera in the city because the plot needed it".
We were all on the edge of our seats with the gripping drama of "go beat up white gang, now go beat up blue gang, and now go beat up red gang" that the masterpiece of Yakuza 1 brought us. True Grounded GRITTY HARD BOILED NOIR DRAMA.
In all seriousness the light tone has done wonders for the series, there's a reason they've be leaning into it harder and harder ever since the OG 1 and 2. These japs couldn't write a serious story if their lives depended on it.

How do I increase trooper slots per squad? Without needing cards that say “increases trooper slots”, of course.

      Moose

You don't. You either run Ichiban and forego the passive damage increase or you run Shinada and deal with one less card.

        Anonymous

damn… fine, guess I’m running Shinada as corporal and pampering him with special swords to buff his corporal trait.

Do you recommend defense or health for the second slot? Designated for Swordsman squad, of course.

          Moose

It doesn't matter what your style is, you run either Shinada + Ichiban + Essence of the Void or Ichiban + Shinada + second damage buff + Essence of the Void on the three main styles. Brawler you want to run Soranohara and whatever throwaway ones you feel like because you're not going to ever be in that style so might as well use it for free heals.

It's recommended that when you use Wild Dancer you use the Ichiban team and EotV into a Ichiban and your second buff and spin with R2. Use Shinada after you run out of Heat to make use of your second damage buff.

Personally I prefer varied teams but if you want to be optimal, for everything except style specific buffs, you can just activate all the cards then switch styles.

              Moose

              >Is it NOT a good idea to have varied squads?
You're just taking a massive DPS loss for no reason by using other cards. Fill your reserves with all the extra Ls and Es for the free health. Ichiban's trooper effect is the highest damage buff in the game, Uta Horiemon is Gunman's, the brawler substory guy is Brawler's Tojiro and Yukimitsu are Swordsman's and Wild Dancer's respectively. You use Essence of Bumbling Fools in early game and Essence of the Void in endgame because bosses can't deal with the former at all and the latter lets you spin2win in WD or mash in Gunman.

Every other card in the game is pointless in endgame unless you are willing to stand around for several minutes as the purple cards regen so you can buff your damage buffs for like eight seconds every time you want to do anything because cards only recharge while you're in the style.

Even on Ishin difficulty there's no reason to have more than like 3500 HP, and on Legend or below you don't need more than like 2.5k HP if that. You don't need extremely high HP.

Just keep in mind that the ideal way to use the cards is if you're running Ichiban you pop EotV, then Ichiban, then R2. Shinada will disable using R2 but R2 with Ichiban keeps his damage buff frozen until you lose all your Heat. If you're running Shinada you pop EotV, wait a second, then pop Ichiban and mash whatever, and then when both wear off you pop Shinada.

                Anonymous

Guess I’m going with Ichiban squad for Swordsman and Wild Dancer after all, since gunslinger feels like it does nothing because of armored enemies in dungeons. Would you recommend the third slot to go to a trooper who recharges heat? I think Saeko does that.

                Moose

                >since gunslinger feels like it does nothing because of armored enemies in dungeons.
That's why you get a Pierce Seal. Gunman is still the best style in the game, Wild Dancer is only good for rooms with 6+ enemies or boss rooms because you can EotV and spin2win with Ichiban for like 90% of their HP but Gunman can just EotV into Ichiban into R2 and then Shinada mash to achieve the same results.
                >Would you recommend the third slot to go to a trooper who recharges heat? I think Saeko does that.
No. You can eat food in the BD so just buy Longevity Pills, but you should regain at least 5-6 tiers of Heat within a single SS BD.

Essence of the Void from Yonashiro Shozo (E) or Hanada Kin (R) is what you want as your non-damage buff card. It makes bosses unable to attack you until it wears off unless you are right next to them, they're kind of affected by it pulling them in, and it pulls an entire arena's worth of enemies into the void for several seconds.

Webm is how I cleared SS 19 on Ishin difficulty but it massively nerfs you which is why I had to use the buff cards on Brawler.

Dude, you have elemental swords that knock enemies down to the ground for like four seconds AND a style that basically has infinite iframes to shuffle along to get to enemies. How are you having any trouble at all? Even William of all enemies gets knocked down by the elemental weapons. Do you understand how easy William is now? In the original you had to do the Sword bullet cutting thing which risked you getting shot for a huge chunk of your health and blast him on the ground in Pistol, then repeat because there was no other strategy to beat him. You couldn't approach him in Wild Dance because it was weak and he had super armor, Hand-to-Hand was lol lmao, Sword couldn't get near him because he'd roll away, and Pistol just got shot before you could shoot him.

This was literally my first attempt. Yes, the final guy can technically keep you on the ground long enough to kill you but unless you're on Ishin difficulty I have zero clue how you're dying because it doesn't deal enough
Also, if you're gonna call this cheesing then they don't expect you to actually attempt the arena until endgame to begin with when you'd have endgame gear because otherwise you'd have really low health and deal chip damage to what basically amounts to endgame bosses who kill you in seconds. Why are you fighting fair? They're not.

How the frick do they have the nerve to still put this in Y4? Is this a joke? I can't believe they think this is actually a good set piece.

They do it as a way to show you how ridiculously broken Kiryu is compared to the other three characters you just played. You'll notice that you hit three times as hard now and the entire gauntlet is a joke compared to Saejima having to deal with the cops.

        Moose

Part two. Even on Ishin difficulty you can't get killed if you do get hit by an elemental bullet once. Also, I just remembered you could skip it on the final guy. I thought you had to wait for one win.

Vortex is the gun I’m aiming to get, but what sword do you recommend, Moose? I’m doing fine with the Best quality Sparkling Jelly Blade and love its literal flexibility, but I still feel like I need to do more damage. I have my eyes on Blade of the Shogun due to its on-paper broken effects or Dragon Slayer, but the former seems way too expensive to be worth it.

          Moose

Okanehira, Thunderstop, or Morning Gale are the only swords you should consider. Light is a bad element because it rarely procs and when it does it lasts seemingly half the time of the other ones. Okanehira is the best one in my opinion. High damage, fire is incredible, easy to make, and you can just slap Elements on it for the buff.

Hmm… can you improve the Golden Gun’s quality, or is it impossible?

              Moose

Impossible. You also wouldn't want to anyway, it doesn't have the reason to keep it like the original (Drop rate increase) and you can't get fire rate Seals like you could get Speed or Blink Symbols in the original so the only viable endgame guns are Vortex or Dragon Hawk. Literally 0 reason to use anything else. The Vortex also looks like it out dpses the Dragon Hawk. You could technically make the Dragon Hawk much better but it would require hours of Yoshiyuki grinding, one gold Pierce, one additional gold Double Shot, and every empty slot filled with Repentance.

Also, it seems like two gold Double Shots is enough, my Vortex is firing two shots pretty much every shot it feels like so I don't see a need to go past that.

          >Also, do I have to waste points on Odachi/Spear/Cannon just to limit break a style?
You have to fill out the entire board if you want to limit break a style. No empty spots. So yes.

          >hurhur i am so good at the game
          Yakuzer fans, ladies and gentleman

Yes, welcome to Ishin's arena. If you are playing it without cheesing it you are not playing it correctly. Same with the Battle Dungeon. Ginryu can literally one-shot you without you being able to react. In the original all you did was stay in Pistol and walk backwards then dodge roll around the boss and continue firing because actually fighting them was unviable.

Deleting a character from existence because paying models/pornstars to have their face scanned is super duper important for Kiryu’s development in Y3 and beyond.

I can't get over how much worse they look in pure fidelity but I do think the overall grimier atmosphere (especially in the music department) makes them uniquely charming compared to later entries

I absolutely hated doing substories in them, using a guide a for Y1 due to the missables felt hollow and empty. Now, what I really miss was that cool little tune that played in certain bars like Stijl in Yakuza 2.

It’s very neat in concept, but it gets old in the end. Y1 has a problem with NPCs repeating the same phrases as well, I’ve heard “majikayo” a million times while traversing.
Yakuza 2 is a little bit better in terms of exploration, and NPCs don’t spam the same voice line as often. The combat is also smoother and better than Yakuza 3, sans the wonderful wall bounding, just loved how easy and fluid Kiryu felt when comboing a group of goons.

        >NPCs repeating the same phrases as well
Y1 and Y2's city ambient track has a clip of a man shouting something, it stands out like a sore thumb and plays like every 3-5 seconds. Shit drove me up a wall.

The loading screen in Y1 before every fight was really stupid

It's not that much worse than your character staring at the bad guy while waiting for civilians to run in place for every random battle.

The transition was pretty fast and seamless Y3 and onward
Y1 is always jarring as frick because of the flat loading screen before every fight

I hope they expand on the dynamic intros in 8 to feature the entire party more. The only time in 7 they did that was in the Seiryu clan HQ. It's something RGG did really well in Lost Judgment so I hope they carry it forward into 8.

Yeah that sounds about right for the mainline/remakes

      Y0 > Y2 > Y4 > Y5 > Y6 > Y2 Kiwami > Y3 > Y1 Kiwami > Y1

I love how self contained the first game is. Even if the second one has my favorite moments and ending Y1 still stands out strongly for me.

For that one guy yesterday who was gonna grind the cannonball cutting for Platinum Filings: Bandit's Mine 3. I just got four in one run. It's also good for some of the gun items and bear carvings.

I’m glad more people are willing to admit that 7’s combat was a huge mess
8 already sends out massive red flags between bringing kiryu back as a protagonist, and keeping the whole game turn-based despite 7’s combat being horrible

I liked it despite it having JRPG turn based combat, it's nice how they made the combat fit with the protagonist's delusion of wanting to be a Dragon Quest hero, it's too bad the combat just sucks donkey wiener. I don't know how people can complain about Yakuza's action combat to give a pass for niptards lowering their standards to JRPG turn based garbage. It's the laziest combat system one can come up with. Any action game is better than this. Beating a custom level of Half-Life solely with headcrabs is more engaging than 90% of the turn based JRPGs. They often have no strategy, no depth, everything is just surface deep. Job system that just means grind to get the passive bonuses and the skills that remain with the character regardless of the job, it's just a surrender to the lowest common denominator. Do anything but don't bastardize a series with this shallow trash that is the JRPG turn based combat.

Gaiden will be a good game ONLY if they port in Lost Judgment's smooth combat.
If its the same combat from Y2Kiwami/Y6 then its going to be shit.

Starting with Y0 is an extremely bad idea, and I'm not even trying to gatekeep or anything. It will give you a major bias against Y1 and Y2 for being as old and unpolished as they are.

Yakuza 0 is a good start.
Yakuza 1 (Kiwami) is easy to digest since it’s basically a Y0 reskin, albeit with a higher base difficulty and a simpler story.
Yakuza 2 (Kiwami) will be your first yet minor bump since it employs Yakuza 6’s Dragon Engine combat, but you’ll get through it, and probably enjoy it.
Yakuza 3 will be your second albeit major bump, it received a flawed remaster rather than a remake. All the luxuries and lesson learned you enjoyed in the previous games are not present there, and the fundamentals of game design you’ll see in Yakuza 3 are literally from a different era. However, once you play through it, you’ll ease into it, or at least learn to accommodate its bullshit.
Yakuza 4 is uh… well, in my opinion, it is Yakuza 3 if it bothered trying to be a good game, but no one appreciates this point of view, but you’ll enjoy it for what it is.
Yakuza 5 is a ride, and I mean it. It’s slow to start, but you’ll be invested, and there’s so much to do it kinda feels overwhelming, but you’ll be easing back into familiar territory since Yakuza 0’s system is an evolution of 5’s.
      Yakuza 6… well, it’s Yakuza 6. I believe it’s worth it.
Yakuza 7 is an entirely different experience, you won’t enjoy it unless if you’re an avid Yakuza fan.

      Even with the Kiwami versions?

He meant for Y1 Kiwami. Yakuza 2’s story and substories are fresh and try something different, the tone and pacing will feel familiar to Y0’s.
