Yakuza was never a particularly good beat em up. The only interesting moves are always unlocked late in the game, and until then it's basic combos 90% of the time, and sometimes you get to activate a canned animation heat action. The combat was always very basic. If anything the shift to turn-based gave the games a depth they never had.
