You need to go back to before they even started designing the Saturn and tell them to focus on 3D instead of designing a 2D console and Frankensteining it at the last minute when they noticed 3D was actually important and that Sony was about to rape their asses

It's still a frickin' country mile better than Sonic the Tardhog and his homosexual friends and moronic autist culthomosexuals. When was the last time Sega shat out a legitimately enjoyable Sonic "game"? Hard mode: No 3D or modern 2D shit.

Not him but while NiGHTS is definitely a more interesting game and a Saturn mainline Sonic title would have probably sucked ass (see Sonic X-treme), Sonic would have sold more regardless of the game being good or not, just because it's Sonic.
NiGHTS is better from the game being good standpoint, but Sonic would have been better for Sega commercially

Can agree with you that NiGHTS is the more interesting of the two and definitely deserves another go/chance at life/existence. Too bad that Sega/SonicTeam went "HURR WE'LL MAKE IT A FRICKING GAMBLING MACHINE, SURELY THAT WON'T BACKFIRE". Christ, Sega truly lacks the self-awareness or even the ability to read the fricking room.

sonic 3d blast exists on the saturn
              how well did that sell?

sonic would have had to come out early in the systems life to sell well, and even then, you'd have to prepare a sequel that balanced striking while the iron was hot vs learning the hardware.

they could have made sonic slow platformer and everyone would have bought it, but they probably would have soured on the system.

better imo to plaster sonic on marketing materials, come out with a few 2d games since that was the purpose of the system in the first place and built something authentic next go around

nights is a wink wink nudge nudge to people who get sonic.

They were making a sonic game and it was an embarrassing disaster apparently. There's this infamous meeting where the people in charge were furious at the demo that was shown. The tech for the console was just not capable of making a 3d sonic game that worked. Nights was the compromise.

3D platformers are possible on the Saturn. a 3D Sonic game was possible on the Saturn, it just came out in 2003 and was called Sonic Robo Blast 2. Yuji Naka intentionally crippled Sonic in order to try and give NiGHTS the edge.

NiGHTS was really fricking good and easily the closest thing on the saturn to the sonic experience at all

looking back, I wouldnt have minded some 2d sonic on the saturn. if the console was made to max out 2d gaming, then put out a fully maxed Sonic experience. get SST to do the music, put some levels and a story together and get cracking.

it's easy to say now bc everything was focused on 3d those days. 3d was getting better every 6 months.

but if you put your money in the 2d basket, then put out a 2d sonic that's got some 3d effects here or there and show what the fuss was about.

Stop parroting this lie. Saturn was always designed for 3D. The two processors that were grafted on were the slave SH2 (general purpose) and VDP2 (2D background engine). The rest of the hardware was always designed for 3D

IMO 3D had nothing to do with it. If Saturn launched with a quality exclusive NFL game, if they launched it in September 95 with the full complement of games, and if they never released the 32X it would have done fine. That's pretty much it. Then over time they could make sure to port more games from Japan onto it. The system was decent at 3D (proven with Sega Rally and VF2) and a monster at 2D.

retrofit arcades with saturn link technology
cancel 32x, sega nomad, and game gear
include the saturn link with all day one bundles; link also includes ram module
mandate all light gun, racing, fighting, and arcade games need to support online gaming

playstation still wins the generation because nothing is stopping final fantasy, but saturn would have been the default for fighting games enthusiasts, sega and arcade fans, and japanophiles, especially if you could play arcade perfect ports of games like marvel vs capcom against your friends or randos at the local arcade. Arcade boards were basically giant sega saturn platters anyway.

Sega could have acquired both development and networking talent and pushed into korea which was having an incredible internet boom at the time.

Release japanese fanzines and visuals in your online browser, eventually releasing saturn links with faster internet access, ram, and built in memory. Deliver an arcade quality port of Virtua Fighter 3 to the Saturn as one of the final games. Focus on integrating Shenmue and Virtua Fighter 4 for the Dreamcast.

Release a beefier Dreamcast with DVD support. Release Fighters Megamix 2 built off Virtua Fighter 3 for the Dreamcast consolidating even more IP, including SOR, Comix Zone, Vectorman, Toe Jam and Earl, etc. Release an updated Virtua Cop that includes a moderned light gun.

Release an online store for Genesis properties. Allow gamers to transfer fanzine content from the Saturn. Allow gamers to send quick messages back and forth to and from arcades using a Typing of the Dead style overlay after victory or defeat. Port Dreamcast games to arcades where applicable such as sports games.

Release Streets of Rage 4 and Sonic 4.
Release Shenmue and Virtua Fighter 4.
Release Virtua Cop 4 and Shining Force 4. All games self reference where appropriate.

Bring back Sega TV for streaming e-sports from the Korea Sega branch.

      Port critical ps1 titles.
      Begin planning Game Gear

if we're time travelling why not tell Sega to snipe FF7 to become a Saturn exclusive in this timeline

          Anonymous

That's not a bad idea. I think there could have been some big timeline changes here and there. Imagine Code Veronica going to gamecube and Resident Evil 4 coming to The Dreamcast, for instance, which is possible if Sega and Capcom grew their relationship further by focusing on internet connectivity before Microsoft stole the show.

I basically just focused on those things that Sega itself could control. Even things like 'focus on one chip that does 3d well' I'm not sure if they would have been able to do.

They also didnt do too badly in the US until the very very end, so if they had not spun their wheels so much early on and built a patchwork of services that they were already dabbling in, they could have very conceivably made a much deeper run.

There was a metric frick ton of things sega did wrong behind the scenes. Just simply the way that sega of america butted heads with sega of japan like they owned the company was a massive problem. All n all: they were both clueless and making really stupid decisions and quite frankly, got lucky with the good ones.

It's the other way around. Sega of Japan were the clueless frickups who constantly butted heads (just look at the entire launch of the Saturn and SoJ declining SGI and Sony collaboration for the console), wheras SoA were the ones who actually managed to overtake Nintendo in the home console market, again, with reluctance from Japan to drop the price of the Genesis and market it aggressively.

        I love Sega that much

        yes
        [...]
2D was fine. You'd need to go to Sega US and tell them not to get into pissing contests with their Japanese branch and welcome their weirdo games to the market and not to piss off retailers (who mattered back then).

For a bonus, get them both to properly share and document the libraries they got for 3D. Proper documentation and dev tools would have saved all of their asses.

So many great games for the Saturn never saw our shores.

Which one, the fact that SoJ fricked up the Saturn launch or that no game would have saved a console which was literally dead from its inception? People don't even know there were Saturn ports of classics like RE, Tomb Raider and Rayman, what the frick makes you think that even if FF7 got miraculously ported to the Saturn it would have been any different? For frick's sake, by 1997 when FF7 launched, Sega had stopped marketing for the system to prepare for the Dreamcast and your dumb ass thinks any one of the other shitty Japan exclusive JRPGs would have done anything? Also the biggest game that generation was Mario 64, maybe GT, FF7 is in third.

              Anonymous

All of the above. SoJ delivered in their region. SoA fricked the Saturn with their 32X antics.

In the 90s if you didn't see games on the shelves at either blockbuster or the stories, you didn't know it exists. Nobody had an iphone to see their favorite streamer playing that rayman port that you have been "sleeping on." This is all SoA's problem.

As far as Mario goes, N64 was the in-between generations console. Released long after Saturn and PS, and got compared more to the Dreamcast at the time (usually with people talking about how much better the Dreamcast is, or to gush over OOT). Mario was then what Mario was in the SNES era. The game you got with your Nintendo so it had a game. It was never as hyped as FFVII was, though it was a good game. Nobody on the playgrounds was like "Oh yeah FFVII is cool, but have you seen MARIO!?" yeah no. It doesn't work like that.

                >SoJ delivered in their region
Delivered my ass, after VF hype died down, everyone bought a PS. Also no developers wanted anything to do with the Saturn, forcing them tto actually make a system you could program for with the DC. There's a reason the Saturn was discontinued so early despite ok sales in JKapan.
                >SoA fricked the Saturn with their 32X antics

all of Sega's hardware frick ups came from Japan. No exception

                >This is all SoA's problem.
So the fact that SoA had a fraction of Sony's markteing budget, no money because they were dealing with massive losses from both the Saturn and the 32X and SoJ continuously fricked them over prior to the Saturn's release but some dumb revisionist thinks they did everything wrong because they didn't get his favorite kawaii animu press X to win slop to the US. Also whose fault do you think it is retailers dropped the Saturn? It was literally SoJ who mandated the system be launched 3 months prior than schedule to screw over Sony. SoA were literally working with hands tied to their back because of this frick up. It's like you want to make as many wrong points as possible

If you had to pick one game from the 5th generation, it's Mario 64, not FF7 and I fricking hate the gay. Also your point is double moronic considering Mario launched earlier.

nta but Mario 64 had 520k sales, 3 months after it's release.

FF7 had 700k after one month.

                >game coming out as a launch title for new console sells less than a game for a system which has been out for 2 years

Mario 64 sold more lifetime units and had a much bigger influence on the industry depite the N64 being completely outsold by the PS. Again, you're talking about "release numbers" when talking about a game which released with 0 hardware sales and another which had like 20 million, it's not a completely arbitrary distinction, it's just moronic to even draw such comparisons. ToTK sold more in its first three days than BoTW, does that make it a bigger game?

yeah, so much they disconnected the system 6 years before the PS. What a resounding success.

Also will you talk about Sega mandating the May 1995 release date, refusing the SGI chip in favor of the dual processor design and never failing to sell more units than their competitors for any given console or can I just assume that you have no rebuttal and SoJ are incompetent c**ts and the cause for all of Sega's major failures?

                > Fact is Mario was the best selling game of that generatio
Actually went to verify this and this isn't even accurate. FVII sold 10 million copies for the PS when Mario 64 did 9,870,000 copies for the N64. Mario Kart on the other hand outdid them both at .11,910,000 copies, with both Maro Kart and Mario 64 owing a huge chunk of their sales to bundles

Also since you have me thinking about the bing bing wahoo factor, Pokemon, a JRPG blew both titles out of the water during this generation.

So even if you want to include the Wahoo factor, my original statement is still accurate. The biggest game of the era was a JRPG.

Both things, directly from SoJ. Thanks for finally admitting you're wrong and SoJ was at fault.

Topic is home consoles Black person, you can't compare $50-60 games with ones that were $30. Also nobody who cares about Pokemon gives two shits about other JRPGs, that's very well established.

      I love Sega that much

      yes

You need to go back to before they even started designing the Saturn and tell them to focus on 3D instead of designing a 2D console and Frankensteining it at the last minute when they noticed 3D was actually important and that Sony was about to rape their asses

      Y'all hate Sony that much?

The problem was SEGA having multiple heads. Unlike Nintendo where NOA always has been nothing more than a glorifed warehouse with no input on hardware and software - SEGA regions run the business within their sphere on their own.
The 32x happend because the Genesys was still going strong in North America and prolonging its life made sense from a business perspective - But in Japan nobody cared anymore and so they moved forward with the Saturn.
At the end this just ended up harming both as the 32x lacked actually support while the Saturn got dropped onto a market that grew tired of SEGAs addon bullshit there.
The Playstation didn't kill SEGA - SEGA killed SEGA. You cannot succeed if you are constantly fighting with yourself.

They don't compete with each other in any way other than getting a bigger piece of the pie, of which Nintendo has currently been eating huge amounts of Sony's slice of it since all the frickups Sony's done in the recent years.

Nintendo failed two generations in a row. They made bad decisions too, they just had more money to survive them

Dominant in the portable market + sold every console they made at a profit. They didn't just have more money to survive them, they were making money too.

I read. And? US retailers hated SoA for over promising on a console they knew was eating shit in Japan. Maybe you should read up on the Saturn's failure in the US before you talk shit.
        > You'd pick bing bing wahoo
        you assume too much
        > mario was released eariler
and you are accusing me of not reading. Mario sold because it was the game you bought with a Nintendo. That is it. FFVII on the other hand was a game you bought a Playstation for. N64 didn't really have that until 1998 with OOT. Furthermore, guess who always came up top on the online popularity polls back in the era through the early 2000s? pic related

        > after VF hype died down
so much they went on to release a sequel and like 20 side games on the console

israelites funded Muhammud and later Islamic leaders to attack Christian countries, who hated ~~*Canaanites*~~ for destroying their preceding nations. During the Golden Age of Islam, Muslims realized that they no longer needed israelites to run their nation because of all the wealth and land that they amassed. This led to pogroms, and israelites running back to Christians to ask for help.

You can't stop AAA slop, microtransactions, decline of beloved companies and franchises just by stopping Sony, or Microsoft from entering the market.
The decline is intrinsically linked to the cultural rot from smartphones, web 2.0, modern market research and business optimization. Let him go down in history as the misunderstood visionary thrown out of his own company by greedy execs, but don't let him introduce the iPod or any tech that could feasibly lead to the iPhone. No iPhone means no app store, which means devs don't get to see how lucrative predatory monetization practices can be. At minimum this delays the descent. Plus, you get the happy side effects of the internet taking longer to become a sanitized corporate hellhole, and no longer having to deal with every moron with a pair of thumbs constantly spouting their opinion on everything

SoA were the one with moronic ideas like the 32x

I can't tell who's in the right anymore. All I know is there was constant bickering, leading to dogshit game and console releases plus always trying to one-up each other. Both branches should've workrd to keep Sonic strong and networked better both inside and with other companies.

        SoA
        >had very little control in pretty much anything related to the company
        >basically a marketing arm with some autonomy over software
        >invested a lot into some costly projects which never materialized (VR and STI in particular)
        >forced to hold a lot of stock by retailers because they were new to the market (unlike Nintendo and maybe even Tonka to an extent who had handled the SMS, but I doubt Toys R Us would have broken ties if SoA refused to meet their demands)
        >even with SoJ's frick ups and Sony's big marketing budget, failed to retain even a fraction of their customers

        SoJ
        >handled all decisions related to hardware (32X and I think Nomad were designed by the American engineers but it was Nakayama's idea to extend the Genesis' lifespan through hardware and not software), so the Saturn not having a graphic accelerator and being expensive and impossible to program for, the Game Gear having an atrocious battery life, the Dreamcast getting them into a court battle with 3dfx, list goes on
        >forced the Saturn to launch early in America, basically killing the system
        >never found success unlike SoA
        >decided to ghost developers who wanted to do anything for the Saturn
        >funded even more costly projects than SoA (like Shenmue)
        >had to be bailed out from hundreds of millions of debt

It was soa that got Microsoft involved who then left once they realised how to copy the DC. They made the modems but didnt do the online thing like what they agreed to do which is why online was so shit.
Some places like Australia didnt have internet access for over a year thanks to them dropping sega.

      >Just put le DVD in le Dreamcast
most moronic take ever. DVD players were like $500 when the Dreamcast launched and Sony practically owned the fricking format, anyone that keeps talking about how a DVD would have saved it is genuinely braindead. Sega was doomed from the launch of the Saturn and the decline of the arcade industry, nothing they could do afterwards would have salvaged them

I'd go back to 1993 or so and keep the Sega/Sony deal that was going on at the time and fly to SoJ and tell those japs how it's going to pan out if they don't fricking take the Sony deal to make the Sega Playstation right the frick now.

Then spend as much time as possible making it incredibly hard for Sony to make/publish any kind of IP so they don't make as much money from the venture as they thought they would while simultaneously trying to get Sonic Team to make a Mario 64 clone before Mario 64 comes out but slap Sonic on there instead as well as making sure JRPGs are being shoveled to the West as much as possible.

So if things pan out properly, A 3D Sonic game that plays as well as Mario 64 comes out sometime in late 1995, Sony aren't having a great time with their games and by the time the 2000s are here Sega are the more well known name when it comes to Playstation and Sony see the whole venture as a bust and drop out trying to make a console in the 6th generation instead giving Sega enough time to secure their foothold in the market some more while Nintendo do their own stuff, Sony are nowhere to be seen and Microsoft never got a chance to learn from Sega's failings and don't feel comfortable joining the industry at this time.

I like most of the consoles. I've owned and played on most of those consoles since the 3rd generation. I think for most people the critiques are less about the consoles themselves (unless they're brand conscious comparing hardware and exclusives) and more on the concerns of peripheral gimmicks, prices (particularly later dlc, live service etc.), and culture politics around it.

i hate what sony and every other company has become. how no other software company seems to take a hint from nintendos success in curating and caring for their successful IP and keeping them healthy. watching sega fumble sonic to the point of having a third party rag tag group of kids who deconstructed your physics engine make their own game for you and show you up. watching sony neglect all the actual fun franchises like parappa and shit that people still hold dear to this day but sleep on them like it wouldn't take a fricking 12 month dev cycle to shit out another sequel if they really wanted to compared to bullshit movie games with 80 million+ dollar budgets. watching microsoft fricking fumble halo, and think the solution to their problems is buying up every studio it can and not actually get any of those studios to make a fricking video game for over half a decade, all that money spent and nothing to show for it.

meanwhile nintendo not only puts out their own hardware, but every single time they do you are guaranteed a new mario, new zelda, new smash bros, new kart game, new golf game, new secondary IP game like metroid, star fox or kirby, etc.

like it's not fricking rocket science. make a game people fricking love, and then just make a sequel every god damn generation, like why the frick is this such a foreign concept to every other company in the world

I thought LBP was okay but nothing that great for a player looking for something big and flashy, I guess. I think players want big action titles or open world or third person 3D stuff with more relatable or human-like characters. I had the game free from the PS store give away on the PS3 so I assumed everyone on the PS had a copy of it anyway. Maybe it's more of a demographic thing? LBP seems like it would be nice for a Nintendo console advertised to kids or families. I'm not if there is enough of a PS audience into that.

I can't stand nintendo games, but I respect how much the company cares about it's brand. They focus on what they do and make sure it's profitable.

Sony and MS seem more focused on the market at large; both gaming it and manipulating it. Everyone wants either a home fricking run of a AAA title or an iron clad contractual win.

Devs have been forgotten about making fun videogames and instead focus on building their next attempt at their retirement fund.

No 32x would have helped a lot since that would mean more shelf space and support with Saturn (retailers were PISSED over the 32X/Saturn debacle), but I don't think that is how Sega's hype has ever worked. The shelf space was a big problem since Saturn was seen as a nogames system when in reality it's library was HUGE (in Japan).

Nobody had an attitude of "look what the cat dragged in" with Dreamcast either. People were impressed by it in general but Sony got a lot of loyalty during the Saturn generation through megahits like FFVII and MGS1. I think skipping that generation would have had the same effect. Saturn needed to do better for the Dreamcast to do better.

Destiny unfolded exactly as it should, and we live in the best timeline. How do I know? If sega didn't fail, we wouldn't have F-zero GX. Although Yakuza being pumped with budget as a first party Sega killer app would have been sick.
