Almost 20 years later and no racing game has managed to surpass GT4.
Year is 2023

I strongly dislike the cover art
fuck GT Sport
What racing game properly expresses the excitement of racing?
most codemasters games before they went downhill
2005 Most Wanted
If you want high skill ceiling rally racing where you can actually feel like Spider-man a kickass rally driver who actually pulls out the stops, Dirt Rally 2.0. Otherwise, F-Zero GX probably gets the high intensity feel down best.
Try Need for Speed Shift. It's a semi-simulator like Gran Turismo, but it has more assists if you need them and the physics emphasize the danger of racing, such as car damage and screen blurring from concussions.
What about Shift 2? That's what I have and been playing recently. Is shift 1 worth it or does shift 2 does everything it does, just better?
Shift 2 is a track racer with a bit of that 2000s edge
But should I get shift 1 if I have shift 2?
I still need to finish Shift 1. Supposedly the driving physics in 2 are kind of fucky compared to 1, but you'd have to see for yourself. 1 is an old game so you could probably buy it really cheap if you can't/don't want to pirate it.
PS2 game looks like that!?
Dirt rally 1
nfs shift, its like a b movie action scene in racing form
grid 2019 is very underrated imo
>Advertising a poorfag wheel in the title
no it isn't,it's legitimately the most boring game i've ever played
Legends is unironically an improvement
For me, its the ending of GT2
i just realized the other day that pic related is the back of a car and the title is a badge. i think its an srt4. the red cover also looks like some kind of light but idk what car it is
Its an Acura 3.2 CL (YA1)
the red cover?
Red cover is a Porsche 911 996, available in-game as the RUF RGT.
ah i see it, bit weird how its upside down though. blue cover is definitely an srt4 though
>blue cover is definitely an srt4 though
No, it's an Acura. You were already told this. The manual literally says it.
What the hell happened to racing games? Where did all this story and driver customization and drama and fucking TALKING come from? When did they stop being solely about cars that go fast? Why did all the series that were about that die?
>F-Zero - Dead
>Gran Turismo - Barely alive
>Forza Motorsport - Slowly slipping away under Horizon's success
>Forza Horizon - Wordswordswordswords
>Need For Speed - Abandoned any sort of driving model with Most Wanted, now a lifeless husk
>Moto Racer - Dead
>Ridge Racer - Dead
>Outrun - Dead
by the time racers entered the 8th generation of consoles, they started regressing by 10 years in terms of presentation and gameplay
>Abandoned any sort of driving model with Most Wanted
IMO Most Wanted actually has one of the better driving models of that period and a lot of cars in the roster feel totally different when racing 'normally,' the problem is so many players just clutch on Speedbreaker for any corner tighter than a sweeper so they never actually learn it or bother changing car tuning settings.
im glad im not the only one who thinks this. everyone seems to love most wanted but it's the game that introduced snap-drift turning and every game since has felt fucking awful compared to NFSU2 and before. i tried heat the other month and it's barely playable. cars dont turn like actual cars anymore.
At leat Mario Kart is still alive
fuck off kartfag
>What the hell happened to racing games?
Fratbros died out as a species and zoomers aren't interested enough in fast cars.
I want to know what happened to track design. Either games are open world and think that a random path along roads in the world map counts as a track (it does not) or it's just real world courses which appeals to autists but is uninteresting. What happened to cool and creative looking tracks?
>Gran Turismo - Barely alive
have a nice day immediately you fucking retard. It's easily the best racing game on the market. You must be a Forza chud
I just want Project Gotham Racing back
sorry, i meant to say shutoko battle
TRX0 is legit one of the best racing games i've ever played.
Genki racing project just moved into a new office
Let's hope it isn't another cellphone game(It will be another cellphone game)
>series is essentially dead in the water
read my post you fucking moron
I want to believe
I swear the series has more fans now than it did when the games were new, you'd think they'd be aware that a true sequel would be an instant moneymaker
>I swear the series has more fans now than it did when the games were new
probably because people are making videos about TXRD2 and TXR3 and also people just getting tired of the state of modern racers
>you'd think they'd be aware that a true sequel would be an instant moneymaker
the problem is that Genki is a small studio and likely doesn't want to take too many risks
both Import Tuner and the mobile game flopped
>both Import Tuner and the mobile game flopped
Import Tuner Challenge is definitely underrated. I didn't know about it until a few years back since they decided to market it with the most generic B-tier title however. Car list was worse, but it's likely because they went all out with the (pretty good for it's time) interior and even visible engine customization. I liked finally being able to make use of Parking Areas to find other racers, too.
Being an Xbox 360 exclusive when the previous games had been PS2 exclusives (yeah, Dreamcast) definitely didn't do it any favors, either.
the game only having the C1 loop is also a downside
yeah i know it has Shibuya and Shinjuku but those are more like C1 extensions than new roads like Yokohane and the Wangan
Yeah, TXR0 had the best Tokyo, 3 had other cities at least, and I think they just overstretched with Challenge and had to trim it all back
>I swear the series has more fans now than it did when the games were new, you'd think they'd be aware that a true sequel would be an instant moneymaker
i wonder if they know about the shutoku revival project?
>Motorstorm: FUCKING dead
>anon doesn't realize that racing games were glorified tech demos and were bought on that premise alone
Time to face reality, Ganker. They died BECAUSE their cores never changed. I'm not saying they need a super dramatic, overly complex story mode or some party mode shit, but it needs more of a hook than cars go fast.
F-Zero GX is the closest to an ideal racer because of its map design, customization, and near timeless graphics and music. The story mode is dogshit, but it's at least memorable. And there's a lot of faces to put to the game: Captain Falcon, Jack Levin, Black Shadow, Blood Falcon, Phoenix, Pico, Super Arrow, the list goes on. It has more depth than being just a racing game.
Goddamn travesty Miyamoto keeps it dead, fucking bastard.
Eh, Midnight Club 3 is peak for me. Great carlist, great customization, excellent sense of speed, well laid out maps built to be raced on and even a nice variety of special abilities along with pretty competitive AI that doesn't rely on rubberbanding. They don't need to fix what's not broken, just at least release a new game with a shiny coat of paint at least once a console gen.
Do you mean creating your own machine, of which there's 200 parts but only about 3 viable machine setups and the rest are just fucking awful?
Gotta think about it from a casual's perspective. It could be used as a selling point, regardless of developer oversight on if they're competitively viable or whatever. Maybe if Nintendo actually made a fucking new one, they could refine it to allow for more viable setups. Or just expand it and make the options that much larger.
F-zero is a unique instance because it didn't die from a lack of popularity but moreso that Nintendo is retarded and doesn't know what to do with it.
Reggie has said that and I think Miyamoto essentially said that
Knowing them they'd slow it down, take out all the neat tricks you can do, and online would be a stripped-down experience
>It's another GT4 was good thread
GT4 was a rotten pile of shit. You can put all the content in the world in, if it feels like shit to drive it means nothing. OP read aout the car count on wikipedia and got a little 3 inch stiffy, then maybe MAYBE, watched some streamer play it.
No one who actually played GT4 in the past 3 years still talks fondly about it. It's the tofu chicken sandwich of racing games
If you play GT4 with a wheel, it controls really well, better than some modern games actually. And the stiffness of the driving on controller can be attributed more to the stiff camera than the physics themselves. Play GT4 Prologue or use the chase cam mod to get what I'm talking about.
No. GT4 always controlled like shit, and i used to play it exclusively with a wheel. If you want a GOOD controlling PS2 game, Enthusia is miles ahead.
I will never take the opinions of someone who prefers chase cam, ESPECIALLY a laggy, delayed one that isn't locked to the car's position.
The Real Understeer Simulator.
GT4 couldn't even surpass GT3
GT4's aesthetics and presentation (music included) were so fucking on point, like, it's the non-flashy equivalent of Persona 5 for me to this day.
Good game but reverse tracks are fucking dogshit, and Porsches and Vipers are understeery cars, truly bizarre
porsches (RUFs) make sense since that's what you'd expect, understeer until suddenly it's oversteer and the ass and end have replaced each other, the problem is that oversteer basically doesn't exist in GT4 other than when your tires are in the red so it just doesn't come
the vipers being so understeery is unforgiveable though
>call it racing game
>6 cars field
don't know why but this feels too jerky
could just be pcsx2 analog sensitivity setting or something
>remember liking GT4 when i was 12
>try it out a couple months ago
>everything handles like shit
>all the other racers are significantly faster unless i spend forever grinding money for parts
In retrospect playing on my cousin's save where he had a roided out Viper probably skewed my perception. What other racers should I check out instead?
for me it's picrel
>career mode, legend difficulty, no assists
i like 2005 Chase for the Cup because it has Trucks and Modified
it also runs quite well on Dolphin
i'm still playing on original hardware on a crt tv but I always wanted to play these old games on emulators, I was thinking about trying dirt to daytona i heard it's quite good.
That's not Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
I too am here.
>What do you mean gameplay?
Wreckfest is decent. It got released on GoG recently which means pirating it couldn't be easier.
Forza motorsport 4 was just as good
>both GT and Forza peaked at 4
>both started to have a downfall from 5 onwards
Sadly true. I don't know if I should be excited or reserved for FM8. It looks good in bullshot clips but racing games have disappointed me for over a decade now consistently.
i honestly have more faith in TDU Solar Crown
TDU is closer to Forza Horizon than Motorsport tbf. I'm silently hyped for it but I don't want to get too invested in case it's shit. We haven't seen anything from it yet.
they've shown some screenshots recently and it looks nice
they also said they're going to show more stuff in a monthly basis
Same, it's got a lot of the same devs behind it as the original. Horizon has been getting increasingly lame by the title, I want to go back to visiting car dealers, optioning out the extra metallic paint, contrasting seat stitching, carbon fiber trim and factory optional wheels before rolling down the windows on your new car and taking it for a drive. Owning cars felt much more meaningful in the TDU titles, I had many cars with over a thousand miles on them in TDU1 when the original servers were still up. The driving physics in hardcore mode were quite good, too.
>I don't know if I should be excited or reserved for FM8. It looks good in bullshot clips
Turn 10 has no idea what they're doing and is banking entirely on GRAFICS and Game Pass making them enough money that Microsoft keeps writing checks without poking their head in too closely. Expect literally just FM7 again- with the same missing features- but now running even worse because RTX, and with less cars and way less tracks.
You're not wrong. Car list was peak, track list was great, Top Gear partnership was kino, customization was great (and better than GT4), and M. Rossi was a fag.
Yeah the Top Gear stuff was great
Still have my copy (and all dlc). Don't think its possible to make a better racing game than those 2
Still playable online, funnily enough. Found some random guy when I tried it a couple weeks ago.
Post a better intro
Yes, its okay to spend $500 on a VR headset for one game
All of them superior to GT4. Even Sports shts all over it.
>dude, let's ruin the career and make it more linear
>*blocks your path*
