I think it can be said that the title screen sums the whole game up and conveys its message perfectly. This is what the developers had in their minds and hearts when they conceived the game.
And it looks like it was never intended to become a series, it was just a moment of inspiration in which they felt this atmosphere the title screen conveys and decided to turn it into a game. But since it became such a hit, Square might as well make some money out of it

Yes, it’s a very memorable and atmospheric game that really tugged on the wonderment of children back when it came out. It was a magical lightning in a bottle moment that resonated with everyone who played it, and it can’t be properly described how interesting and fun it was. Pure autism. So odd and magical to be cast into an island with final fantasy characters from your vidya, only to be swept away into worlds containing Disney cartoons you and your parents grew up on, all while fighting edgy shadow monsters. Amazing.

I was already an old jaded PC fat by then, anyways
Because the aging Zelda fans really liked the darker OoT (game every magazine gave a perfect score) and Majora’s Mask, only to be cucked with a cutesy Zelda they weren’t expecting. It made a lot of sense and I was in the “Zelda should be darker” camp back then.
Kingdom Hearts was something brand new and was as edgy as it was cutesy which is why it didn’t receive that kind of backlash.
The point is that KH is just one series in the midst of dozens of others the PS had to offer. The PS had this, and it also had DMC and MGS2. Nintendo was already appealing almost exclusively to a niche back then. I remember the GameCube was universally regarded as the "console for kids"
