Elden Ring and BOTW mog it in open world. RDR2 looks better, sure, but other than that, it's boring.

they just tried to do the most realistic animations possible. sorry humans can't change velocity from 0 to 100 like in zelda or sonic, they take a while to move from one place to another and take a while to accelerate to normal speed. if that feels cumbersome it's because realistic is cumbersome, and they didn't aim for the adhd zelda audience but for peak realism which untainted humans appreciate

Basing everything on a staunch desire for realism takes zero imagination and only placates graphics gays and people who think video games should be "mature," thought-provoking experiences over actually being fun.

        >Why is the other 50% of all missions just riding in a car/horse listening to endless dialogue?
Because it's a story driven game. How else do you want them to convey the plot to you? If it were long cutscenes instead you'd still be whining.

        >If it were long cut-scenes instead you'd still be whining.
I would prefer regular cutscenes. I loath all these gameplay mixed with cinematics/story shit. I'd rather just sit back and relax and get a well animated cutscene that is interesting to watch over having to constantly hold move forward and stare at a tailpipe/horse tail for 20 hours while nothing interesting happens. Might as well be a glorified audiobook at that point.

                >developing characters naturalistically = shitty filler, exposition dumps
Yes. If you need never ending 5-10 min dialogue dumps to develop your characters, it's shit writing.
                >wants immaculately choreographed cutscenes for bread and butter character writing
No, I want bread and butter character writing replaced by well written cutscenes that focus the story and characters.
                >metal gear shit
Kind of highlights how boring most modern Rockstar games is when even fricking MGS does something better.

RDR 1 and 2 are some of the very few games out there that actually make riding a horse engaging and fun. So the simple act of casually galloping through a beautiful countryside is already quite enjoyable in and of itself and certainly beats watching a cutscene. Again, it is a very slowburn game and an anomaly for modern AAA releases, as it is basically the antithesis to the more popular dopamine hamster wheel way of open world design.

                >RDR 1 and 2 are some of the very few games out there that actually make riding a horse engaging and fun.
Galloping across the world on your own pace can certainly be enjoyable. Watching two characters endlessly scream dialogue at each other over horseback however is not.

You can make an engaging character in a 20 minute episode of a TV show if you are a good writer. Rockstar is just shit at writing.

Name one. I guarantee you it's mission-sensitive and not Rockstar introducing a game mechanic just to dump it unceremoniously.

Not sure about RDR2, but throwing bricks, riding the subway, towing cars, herding cattle, taming horses, online dating immediately springs to mind. Granted even in San Andreas these issues were starting to appear.

Moving your analog stick in any direction or pressing any button, and your character refusing to respond immediately is the definition of input lag. Outside of Rockstar games, this is called input lag. Because Rockstar games are the only games you play, I can understand why you would think this is "weighted movement". It doesn't even exist in real life. Weighted movement would be more akin to God of War. But Kratos still responds when you move. Slow animations or wind up aren't bad. Input lag is bad.

Believe it or not, fanboys actually claim bad game design is intentional. In any other game input lag is criticized. It was a major flaw with Gta5 as well. It's just worse here. The Witcher has to come out with a completely new game mode in order for it to be playable. It had the same shitty lag. The online mode for Rdr2 had its lag reduced because pvp was that bad.

I mean, every game is meant to release dopamine, but it is absolutely not the typical open world dopamine farm that you see in other games. Your saved infographs aren't going to change anything about that. I mean, you even admitted as much by basically saying the open world is empty and boring. If it was designed like a Ubisoft open world for instance, you could call it many things, but it certainly wouldn't be empty and boring, because you'd be bombarded by quests, side content, collecting shit etc around every corner. In RDR 2 the downtime between stuff happening in the open world is much wider than in most other open world games, which is a double edged blade. ADHD zoomers will not be able to enjoy the game, but people who don't have the tiktok mindrot and are still mentally capable of reading a book for instance will usually love the game for it because it creates a much more realistic and immersive experience.

You all say the exact same thing like a hivemind. Calling other people zoomers doesn't automatically make you an adult. The only people that defend Rdr2 are children (zoomers). I understand that playing Rockstar games makes you feel like a hard guy, but it's just a videogame. We were all like you back then with Gta. For me it was San Andreas. Like you, I thought I was a tough guy and better than my peers.
And no, it's a very unrealistic game. Your character has a neurological disorder where he doesn't react to inputs. Bounty hunters spawn out of thin air. Your reticle zips across the screen during gunfights. Superhuman dead eye. Carrying hundreds of items in your satchel. The politics. There's dozens more I could list.
Again, proving you're a child by using the realism argument. You're definitely under 20.

Only a child or zoomer defends Rockstar to such an extent. They think they're tough guys because they play Rockstar games. More proof of this is their ignorance when it comes to the politics in the game. They legitimately think leftism was rampant and will argue in favor of these beliefs. Some even rewrite history and claim prejudice was exaggerated.

      >introducing shitty gimmick game mechanics you will completely ignore after doing the mission?
      Valid complaint and good question.

Name one. I guarantee you it's mission-sensitive and not Rockstar introducing a game mechanic just to dump it unceremoniously.

Stuff like robbing stagecoaches, selling horses etc. Hell rockstar have been doing this shit for decades in all of their games. If the bounty system wasn't extremely dogshit maybe those activities could've been enjoyable. As is you're doing an activity that most likely reward less money than you need to pay off the bounty for doing it in the first place.

I was cool with the gunplay and didn't mind the story. The open world really is fantastic with all the unique events in it though. I wish more developers had the budget and manpower to also have the same sheer amount of unique content as RDR2 did.

It's honestly mindblowing to think that RDR2 came out 5 years ago and still not a single game has come even close to producing a similarly impressive open world with realistic weather effects, lighting etc. Video game technology truly has stagnated in the last decade.

it didn't bother me that arthur wasn't period-accurate racist and sexist, if you expected the protagonist of one of the most expensive AAA games ever made to be an open chud, you are a moron
that being said the game was so boring and tedious, everything felt like a chore

It really depends on what you're looking for in an OW game. RDR 2 definitely is king when it comes to design and feel. But if you want sandboxy shit stalker is better for example.

I fricking hate 2 so God damn much and I'm sick of people defending the problems with the game by saying its immersive.

I don't know. The world is really pretty to look at, but there wasn't a whole lot to do in it. What the game really needed is a proper economy, more stuff to buy and more realistic prices so that you had a reason to go hunt rare pelts and shit like that. Maybe there's a mod that does those things.

      Anonymous

      >conomy, more stuff to buy and more realistic prices so that you had a reason to go hunt rare pelts and shit like that.
Definitely agree. I don't understand why they didn't just incorporate some of the features from the MP into SP. Also you should've been able to buy houses.

        Anonymous

The economy is balanced in a way that would suit RDRO grinding just like how GTAV has a gimped economy designed to funnel idiots into handing over real world cash
The fact that RDRO flopped is poetic justice and sadly hurts this game

Barely anybody knows this, but there's actually a quest hidden right in front of your eyes that changes everything about how you experience the game.

The game gives you plenty of reason with the upgrade system. You'll be hunting pelts from start to finish.
I know some of you spend 300hrs just running in circles , but RDR2 is one of the best examples of doing economy right.

lmao, you're drenched in cash from start to finish. The only part of the "economy" that you actually interact with is gathering the pelts

Literally no scarcity of money especially after the bank robbery in chapter 3. Then you have to play a story about desperately needing money while Arthur has 10000 dollars sitting in his satchel.

    >You CANNOT in good faith tell me that there is a better open world experience in ANY game
I define open world as a game where you make your own adventure. RDR2 just like any other AAA "open world" game isn't that. You either holding developers hand throughout entire walkthrough of there's just nothing else to do beside just wandering around pretty scenery.

TotK's horse will stop as soon as it stumbles upon a *gasp* a slope and it shits and sharts itself as you struggle to get it to reverse. Making a horseriding system worse than RDR2 is an achievement but by golly Nintendo found a way.

It depends what you want from your open world. For me, modded Skyrim is still the GOAT of open world. RDR2 is unrivalled in attention to detail but ultimate it's wasted and nothing more than eye candy and it would have been way more enjoyable if it just let you create a character and live a cowboy life sim instead of having such an overstretched story that has strong dissonance with taking your sweet time and exploring.

the nice thing about shooters is that the main concept is so piss easy that it's almost impossible to really screw up.
with any kind of sword and shield fighty game there are millions of ways to make it suck, either the weights isn't there or the controls don't feel direct enough or you're not given enough options.
with point-and-shooty games, all you have to program for is [IF DOT OVERLAPS NPC HEAD & PLAYER PRESSES SHOOT BUTTON: NPC DIES]

Even Bethesda's games are above RDR2. Your empty open world which is dozens of IRL miles long is not fun to navigate if it's a fricking slog to cross even a fraction of it.
