            Anonymous

The loot system is a massive improvement, you can end up getting powerful gear by the end of Telos (sometimes on Peragus if you're particularly lucky) which can kickstart a playthrough, or you can end up with odd gear that forces you to use different equipment than you normally would. At the same time the inclusion of the crafting and upgrade system and the increased power and damage of feats and equipment across the board means you're never stuck requiring one particular bit of gear like the first game.

If you do need specific equipment for your build it's almost always very easy to savescum for it if you know what you're doing

I really hate that the game just seems to except you to cheese like this, but it's a massive problem with D&D combat (and truth be told really most RPG systems generally) that you have hundreds of different possible buffs you can cast but 99% of the time just doing the default attack is more beneficial since buffs usually take a combat round

I don't know what Impossible Difficulty entails but it's just barely possible to play Hard Difficulty as a dark side force user so I'd recommend going all in on melee (or ranged if that's viable)

        >it's just barely possible to play Hard Difficulty as a dark side force user
        Why?

          Anonymous

You can completely BTFO regular enemies easily but Malak is extremely resistant to force powers and all the best +WIS gear is locked to the light side. If you go all in on being a force user and use Valor + Plague you can just barely land force powers on Malak ~40% of the time. I imagine Impossible difficulty would make him even more resistant.

            Anonymous

Right. I forgot I always spam stims + force speed on Malak. Reminds me that grenades are almost completely useless in the 2nd game because all of the old grenades still have the same saving throw numbers but all of the enemies have way higher stats so they'll never roll their effects starting pretty early in the game.

Item DCs are fricked in general in Kotor2. The grey Exile crystal gives a Force Resist bonus which does literally nothing because every single enemy in the game has a high enough natural score to overcome it on a roll of 1.

              Anonymous

I actually made a mod to "fix" this (every 2 points in Demolitions adds +1 to all grenade DCs) but I have the GOG version so I have no idea where to upload it.

The worst example of this is weapon upgrades, basically all the upgrades that give Stun or Slow chance are worthless for the reason you stated. I think there's a Lightsaber crystal that has a knockdown DC of 10 or something when you can't even make a Lightsaber until around level 12. They really needed to scale these things based on stats or something, it's like the game was balanced around kotor 1's leveling system.

It might have been. I had the game's official strategy guide and I remember many, many sections that seemed to imply that the game's loot wasn't randomized at all. It also made certain fights seem way harder or easier than they actually were. I have a feeling a lot of the leveling and loot stuff was changed last minute.

How did a vidya composer manage to make a soundtrack that sounds more authentically Star Wars than the actual sequel trilogy did?

Mark Griskey is a classically trained composer, and a longtime Star Wars and John Williams fan. Go figure As for ST, pretty sure Williams didn't care much.

Williams reportedly had no fricking clue what the themes were supposed to be for, and neither did the directors. The themes aren't meant to fit anything but the most generic of concepts, because nobody knew what the music was supposed to reflect.
He just sent them out and they crowbarred them in, because disney never gave a shit about the music, only having the name John Williams attached to it.

Contrast it to the OT and PT, where Lucas had a finished product to go over with Williams, so they could make it as appropriate as possible.

Sentinel blaster build is extremely flexible. The basics are
        >you can safely dump STR so you get 14 in all other categories
        >put points into CON until 18 then all in DEX
        >get close combat feats before they disappear with prestige class
        >dark side has better synergy so marauder or assassin
        >master two weapon fighting, precise shot, etc.
        >works with or without armor, plan powers accordingly
End goal is two heavily modified blasters but early game you have to take whatever you can get. This build benifits more than most from actually paying attention to the workbench and creating/using mods. You get a ton of skill points and with security and computer usage you can put whoever you want in your party comfortably. The even stat spread into charisma and wisdom gives you decent force power usage which is probably best used with support abilities lie speed and valor or utility like Insanity if going Assassin, you don't need damage that's where your blasters come in.

Star wars canon is moronic and confusing so who cares when it's full of fan-fiction-tier garbage.

I refuse to acknowledge "Bioware's seethe made manifest as an MMO" as anything other than them throwing a hissy fit over KOTOR 2.

I don't doubt that they were seething, but I think it was less malice and more them legit being just terrible writers that made the midwits over at obsidian look like accomplished authors

It was a combination of both. I'm sure even with the best of intentions Bioware would've fricked it up with sheer incompetence, but the main reason it's as bad as it is is because the ""author"" in question was and still is eternally seething about Obsidian doing a better job of writing his own characters than he could. The 'Exile' might as well be a completely different character since the author was too stupid to understand everything about her unique situation and powers, all the companions from II and most of those from I get completely forgotten about, Revan goes from being a supposed strategic genius and Force prodigy (which is established in I) to acting like a complete idiot, because the guy was so desperate to ruin everything from II he didn't care about destroying his own characters at the same time. Revan is an even more beloved character in the fanbase than the Exile, so killing him off in a completely moronic fashion all so that (you) could selfinsert as the guy who fixes everything in the upcoming MMO was not a popular decision, to put it lightly.

It's a tremendous shame considering how well II understood and respected the first game and how II went as far as establishing a perfect psetup for a third game. Anyone with the slightest bit of sense or professionalism would've handled it better, hell your average KorOR II fan from back then would've handled it better.

tl;dr Drew deserves to get spat on for as long as he lives for being responsible for that book

That's the most disappointing thing about it all. The two games were great and the setting itself had so much potential, especially with the more nuanced writing and deeper introspection of the second game; there was so much opportunity to explore either where the games left off or new stories in a similar way to the first two. Instead, we were robbed of a sequel in favour of an MMO that couldn't get even the most basic things right. If it wasn't so disappointing it would be almost impressive how badly such an established developer could frick up a project with so much effort and money poured into it, at a time where even an adequate Star Wars MMO would've been a powerhouse.

If it makes you feel any better, the author who fricked everything up for KotOR is the same one who worked on the first game wrote the original outline for the ME trilogy that MEgays are always clamouring about, so I doubt it would've ended up any better even as intended. If there's one thing it reinforced to me, it's how much of an absolute fluke the first KotOR was from Bioware.

I think Kotor 3 would have been disappointing.

Kotor 2 sets up a lot of intrigue but paying that off would be hard and it's easy to see how they could have fricked up revan's character or forgot to have real themes in their game about stopping the big bad sith empire.

Also if it had been greenlit it would have been developed at the transition between console generations which means learning new technology (although honestly I'd be happy with a Kotor 3 made in the Odyssey engine since I think the kotor games still look quite nice).

Personally I don't mind, but it'd look like hot garbage by 2006-2007 standards.
An AAA studio would be mocked for releasing something like that.

They’re both right to some extent. That’s the point. The Jedi failed Anakin and we’re corrupt, but Anakin was also clearly delusional.

That's the most disappointing thing about it all. BioWare were always hacks. It’s amazing it took this long for people to start to realise it.

KOTOR 1 proved that they have a level of understanding of Star Wars on par with Disney, since they managed to imitate all the bells and whistles of the franchise, but not the heart and soul of it that was present in both the OT and PT.

KOTOR 1 is basically an exercise in ripping off the OT and combining it with Bioware game cliches. KOTOR 2 is more thematically accurate to what Star Wars is at its core as described by George Lucas and his movies.

Oh, I agree, but I was still surprised at what a sudden decline there was. I was expecting them to at least try and build on the previous games. They had the perfect opportunity since Obsidian had already done most of the heavy lifting for them.

Imagine my surprise when their next original game was just KotOR with the serial numbers filed off and worse in every way, and then they were announced to be the ones developing a Star Wars MMO.

Being a goody two shoes is boring and you get way more EXP and rewards for being Dark Side.

See that's me in Kotor 1
Lightside in Kotor 2 is actually very rewarding.
It's the only game where you can directly challenge and even prove your master(Kreia) wrong. I also love turning all the followers into Jedi.
my canon playthrough is a male space jesus exile watchman. A Han Solo greaser type with some subtle Obi Wan elements

you aren't a goody two shoes as lightside
light side exile can be disillusioned, cynical and in constant disagreement with the jedi order

        BUT

the major difference between dark and light side is that light side exile, despite everything, despite knowing the cost, still chooses to do the right thing, not because someone tells them to but because they want to

And Kreia is secretly proud of you for it

Truth be told, part of the reason I like Dark Side is that you get more lightsaber duels than in a Light Side Run (Assuming you kill the Masters). I love killing the Masters, because the idea of the Exile travelling the galaxy to track down and assassinate the council is kino.
