No, Walker did it. The story is not about you, the player, it's about Walker. Just like LoK is a story about Kain and Raziel, or LoZ is a story about Link and Zelda.

      >B-But muh loading screen tips!
Cheeky 4th wall breaking with no larger significance

A game, like any other story, would have to have indications about who the story is actually symbolically about.
If this were an exam your English teacher would take away points now and ask for the proof in the text for your theories.
A proof in favor of Walker being (You) are the loading screen tips, and since there is no evidence of the contrary being true then it's pretty clear that the game is in fact talking to the player as well. And in turn, worsening the narrative for throwing away player agency and being needlessly preachy.

The hilarity of the 4th wall breaks is that they are not really about the game, but about the genre. There are 2 narratives going on simultaneously. The first is Walker's, and the second is an examination of the modern military shooter always making the combat scenarios excessively sanitized from the mess that actual war and combat are. The loading screens remind the player its a game, but do ask the player to consider how absurd it is that in CoD, outside of 1 shock jock mission, civilians are always conveniently absent from the conflict.

            >illiterate gamers flip their shit

it's almost like they've never read a book

But when you look at it like that, it makes the game look bad and really shallow. Like a CoD parody made by someone who never played CoD, kind of like how DDLC was a VN parody made by someone who never read a VN.

A game that got so much critical praise back in the day wouldn't POSSIBLY have a message as simple as "war is bad", right? So they try to justify the critical praise by overcomplicating the message of the story so that it seems deeper than it actually was, even if that leads to a bunch of holes and inconsistencies in the actual message.

      >No, Walker did it. The story is not about you, the player, it's about Walker.
Walker would not have murdered those people if you never touched the controller. The entire point of games is the player agency. If the game puts zero responsibility on the player for their actions, then it has failed as a videogame, and it has especially failed as a critique of videogames as a medium, which is what literally every games journo outlet claimed this was back in the day.

Trust me, anyone who tries to claim this game "isn't a meta commentary" wasn't born yet when it came out. Because journos shoved this game down your THROAT about how it "BTFO'd CoD" and "changed the shooter landscape forever". Because journos back then thought that CoD was pro-war, even though CoDs like CoD4 and WaW also tackled these concepts.

I really don't get the seething behind this game. The story exists to tell a message whether you like it or not. Idiots, Walker doesn't represent (You), he represents the stereotypical modern military FPS protagonist. Call of Duty, Battlefield, etc. all condition you to see the enemy NPCs as the "bad guys" without any critical thinking, you just end countless lives because you were told to but in this game the enemy NPCs are civilians and other Americans. You don't self-insert as Walker, you insert him into other videogames.

Spec Ops: The Line is a pretty based critique of the FPS genre in the same way that Cabin in the Woods is a pretty based critique of the horror genre.
