Snecko eye might be my least favorite fricking thing ever. I only ever ruined a run by picking it, and I never ever have the prerequisite 3x meteor strikes, 2x sunder, buffers etc to make it actually worth a shit

Instead you get a hand full of 2, 3 cost garbage that you can't play for three turns in a row, eat shit, and wished you took a fricking energy relic like a normal human
Wow I can cheat mana now and then. Ooh I don't need to pick card draw. Wow this incentivizes building shitty garbage decks on first floor!!!!

Garbage relic frick everyone who says otherwise

Snecko eye is also two additional cards per turn. You're objectively wrong if you think it's a bad relic because the math all but guarantees you come out ahead after taking it as long as you haven't stuffed your deck full of 0 costs.

Supremely shitty feeling playing with this card.

Only way I can see it work is on defect with lots of big cards + all for one to draw the zero cost cards, but that's a gimmick

Because you don't plan for a boss relic like that. You do what is best which is to take some card draw, cheap damage stuff etc etc

I'm shitposting, but honestly Snecko Eye is actually a meme. It works for specific builds SOMETIMES, but is very inconsistent. The entire goal is to mitigate RNG as much as possible and Snecko says "frick it, I'll just gamble the averages because I'll end up ahead 60% of the time." You're better off actually making smart choices from beginning to end and ending up with a deck that can't brick you whenever it feels like it.

Snecko is actually ridiculous because it's giving you passive +2 Card Draw. That's why it's outrageously strong in most situations, and mitigating confusion is something all characters can typically handle.

On Defect it does some absolutely zany shit once All For One or Scrape gets involved.

                Anonymous

The math says that Snecko works for basically every build stuffed with 0s all the time. The objective of the game is not to minimize RNG, but rather maximize WR. +2 cards, +~.5+ energy every turn maximizes your WR. Bad players need more RNG in their runs anyway.

I'm not disputing that you'll benefit more than you won't, my point is that you're giving up control over your deck for the sake of a benefit that it's possible to not get at all. You'll win more than you lose over 1000 games, but in a significant portion of the ones you'll lose it'll be because of something you had 0 control over. That sucks and is a shitty way to play the game outside of memes.

I would be incredibly surprised if you're higher than A15 if you still have a mindset like this.
You're missing the fact that all snecko needs to do to have been worthwhile is give you a playable hand worth 3 energy. If you save any more energy than that, you're already ahead and that's incredibly trivial because of the +2 draw and the fact that you'll already have a deck lacking 0s before taking it or will be focusing in removing those 0s afterwards.
Snecko is broken as hell and it requires minimal amounts of building around. Grabbing half-decent high cost cards, ignoring 0s and ALMOST never grabbing 1s is all it takes. You don't need more draw, you don't need more energy. That's just bonus.

I've only ever gotten it to work on Ironclad but even then it can be tricky. Ironclad has some of the best immediately useful high cost cards, including ones you could easily take early before you get snecko like Uppercut. I find him the easiest to pivot into snecko and the easiest to use snecko with. Beat A20 heart with a good snecko deck.

I'm assuming you picked up Wallop in the shop/S&S fight and that's why it's not upgraded, and also you took Mind Bloom? The deck honestly looks very strong, so I couldn't really tell you why you lost lol. 1-2 of the damage commons were probably superfluous. With a deck this strong I'd actually be more curious to see how you pathed. I'd have gone full throttle on encounters after Jaxx to maximize odds of seeing TTTH and MF here since it looks like you'd kill everything within 2 turns.

I will pick this only after I have all the good power cards (+ focus, storm, lightning aoe, buffers) and I have great survivability, or if i am totally lacking in powers and a game plan in general beyond just playing cards

So yeah, it can win you the game. It can also give you multiple hello worlds and unupgraded buffers with zero synergy

        Anonymous

I don't think it's overrated at all, Defect can absolutely ball out of control when multiple Buffers or Echo Forms start appearing. In terms of scaling potential it's probably the single most ridiculous card for it in the game.
Like you get this and Mummified Hand and you've just won a run because you are now on the same DBZ power level as Corruption & Dead Branch Ironclad. Bird Faced Urn combined with Creative AI gives you infinite healing in any scenario you can stall, which is every fight due to Buffers and Focus applied to Frost Orbs.

It lacks consistency of course but that's a worthy trade for it being potentially unlimited power.

        Monster train is similar
Seems like runs have less rng/simpler paths
There's potential for some big brain plays and decks but I didn't play it very long
I'd say the biggest downside is it looks like a phone game. Not like how you could play StS on a phone, I know you can.
I mean the art style in monstertrain looks lame. Like mobileslop
Personally I'm waiting for spellrogue. Looks pretty barebones and the demo was painfully EZ but I enjoyed it and it was chill. As long as it doesn't release at $30 I'll get that when it comes out

Cobalt Core, Wildfrost and Astrea: Six-Sided Oracles all released last year and were all great. Cobalt Core has the most similar deckbuilding to Slay the Spire, even has some very similar cards, but the actual combat is very different because you're controling a spaceship. Astrea: Six-Sided Oracles has the most similar combat but the deckbuilding is very different because you use dice instead of cards. Wildfrost's deckbuilding and combat are different but not by very much, but it is the most similar to Slay the Spire in terms of unforgiving difficulty. The other two are far more lenient with mistakes, Wildfrost is brutal and punishes the smallest mistakes basically instantly.

        >...I like Tiny Chest though.
Sure you might like it but it's objectively a bad relic.
It becomes "good" when you can get 8 question marks, right? Because instead of 1 relic you got 2.
But to do that, you realistically have to get it in act 1. So on average you're just getting 1 relic reward out of it. Or sometimes none at all.
So problem #1 is: it just gives you 1 relic on average, but later. You're essentially delaying your relic acquisition. Which is bad. It might end a run or make you lose health.
Problem #2 is that you actively have to go to question marks which changes your optimal route. This feels really bad when you get a relic that doesn't help you in any way.
So more often than not it's actually WORSE to get this relic than nothing at all.

        t. A20 player.

I'll also add that Shovel is bad for many of the same reasons. You need to dig twice just to have it do anything, at which point you've effectively traded -2 upgrades for +1 relic. That's pretty dogshit.

I don't understand either. +1 focus early is huge for defect.
The literal best power you can get on act 1 is defragment and it gives 1 focus two.

And a defrag and data disk makes you extremely dps heavy

defect just has the lowest winrate of all 4 characters so his specific relics have the lowest winrate
watcher has the highest winrate so even damaru and yang have high winrates because they're being carried by the character

        Anonymous

I wouldn't pay attention to that list at all. It's based off winrates, but I feel like it's based off winrates of bad players from 5 years ago.
Paper Krane, Data Disk, Preserved Insect, Winged Boots, and Prayer Wheel are all game-changing relics. And basically all the Watcher ones lining the top are dogshit.

That's what I was saying. You take Key over Danmaru and Golden Eye a lot of the time, and Duality a little bit less often. The entire thing is bunk and no one should reference it while playing their runs.

It's really crippling on A20 unless you have your potion belt already locked with endgame potions and you know you won't need the reach from them during the act(s). So it's basically only good when it's already a win-more item.

Literally no decks are scared of this. Nice balancing you got there.

Personally I find Donu and Deca the hardest. You can kind of chill out and play it safe until you get what you need with time eater and awakened one, but Donu and Deca scale faster than both and they start out dealing more damage than both. You need really good frontloaded damage or really good scaling to beat them.

    >tfw 194 hours with A13 on Silent and Ironclad and A14 on Defect
Am I doing ok? I think my biggest downfall as a player is taking big risks on the third floor and fighting optional bosses I shouldn't. Also I feel like Defect is the only class I'm truly confident in playing. Ironclad and Silent feel way too random and inflexible. Like their cards all have negative synergy or are really dependent on finding another card. Like say I'm ironclad and it's the first floor and the game just keeps throwing strength cards at me, then the next floor it throws exhaust shit at me- no synergy there. Meanwhile Defect can smoothly play with pretty much anything its given I feel. I just cleared a13 with a frost deck that didn't have blizzard (jobbed to heart, because I couldn't find it, but it still cleared that ascension)

It's been so long I can't recall at all. My first A20 win was more than 3 years ago at this point.

      Anonymous

I didn't bother with A20 until watching Jorbs vids and checking stats, which basically gave me an idea of what works and what doesn't.

The main thing about Slay The Spire is card synergy or deck archetypes is just a big meme, the ACTUAL meta is picking strong cards for the situation you're in, then simply surviving long enough until the shape of a winning strategy falls into place. You get enough opportunities thrown at you that you can usually turn that into something with the potential to carry you through, you just need to be alive long enough for that to arrive.

So you pick Attack cards in Act 1, AOE cards for Act 2, then ensure you have a scaling strategy ready for Act 3. You get the best attacks you can early, pick good shit like high-cost high-impact cards, anything that blocks + draws cards is OP, remove your Strikes at shops, and ignore any card that doesn't explicitly help you right here and now. If you see Tungsten Rod / Torii / Incense Burner at the shop you grab that shit because any relic passively defending you is S-Tier.

Eventually your third eye will open and you'll be doing dank Exhaust Juggernaut Ironclad decks or Silent & Bullet TIme Nightmare Catalysts and all sorts of insane shit.

Mostly right, though I do think there are some cards you should bet on their future use (like feel no pain or dark embrace as clad, cause you WILL get something to exhaust beyond ascender's bane soon, most likely). Not at the expense of an attack card that you need to face an elite next floor, but still

          Anonymous

Feel No Pain or Dark Embrace technically provide immediate results due to Ascender's Bane, small though it is. Even stuff like Fire Breathing gets "upgraded" in A10 and beyond because its just handing you a trigger out the gate.

There are a lot of things directly taken from Spire, but Magic's mana system makes deck building more interesting. You have to be aware of what colors are in your pool, and getting another color outside of your starting colors opens up your card choices. It's also more balanced (at least on base difficulty since I'm an A1 shitter); no ways to go infinite, no trap cards/relics... and there are things not taken from spire: potions Marisa is super fun

that's at least a 3 card combo, one of which involves a rare, and the other involves a card that exhausts. the effort put in assembling that combo, plus a deck that can play defensively enough to stack poison before you burstlyst? yes, it's balanced.

What even is the preferred build for the silent? Poison seems like it can be good if you have strong defense and play the long game but some bosses specifically counter it, hard, especially that one that gets strength for every skill played.
shiv seems okay if you don't plan on killing the heart but is terrible against the heart

poison is generally better because you only really need a couple of catalysts or a burst with catalyst and you will pretty much guarantee get 100+ poison off very easily against any boss plus its just more braindead in general

shiv builds can get ridiculous but you need a decent amount of luck (getting accuracy cards and strength feels really rare) regardless though silent is all about deck manipulation and lining your shit up. phantasmal killer with a shiv build is fricking nuts, ive had runs where my shivs were doing 100+ damage each

You don't build shivs or poison, you build damage. The game asks you to deal damage and block attacks. How you do that is up to you, but you're definitely not pigeonholed into taking shivs or taking poison.
Your damage can be Calculated Gamble + Tingsha, it can be Phantasmal Killer + Pen Nib + Skewer, it can be an infinite Grand Finale loop, the world is your oyster. Oftentimes your damage solution will revolve around spamming shivs and stacking poison, but just because you're doing one thing doesn't mean you should ignore the other. Don't skip an Act 1 Blade Dance just because you have a Deadly Poison, and don't skip a Crippling Cloud just because you have an Accuracy.
As long as you're sticking to "builds" just keep in mind that you should basically never have more than 3 cards that generate shivs, and that the two best cards for dealing damage with attacks are Phantasmal Killer and Terror. And don't be afraid of the Heart or Time Eater just because your deck plays a lot of shivs. If your shivs aren't dealing like 15+ damage, you can just not play them. And if they're not dealing that much damage, yet you have no other damage source, then you never had the damage to win anyway.

        Anonymous

Of course you aren't "limited" to builds but generally speaking synergies reward you better. If it's act 1 and i've picked up 3 or 4 shiv related cards and 1 poison, it's not really worth it to pick up a poison payoff if my chances of getting a poison card is low because of shivs filling my deck

          Anonymous

It's absolutely worth it if that card helps. Picking up a Corpse Explosion/Crippling Cloud in Act 2 will absolutely help your deck even though you have no other Poison stacking, and similarly, picking up a prospective Catalyst if you have Burst+WLP (or Nightmare), but have no other poison, is perfectly fine. An upgraded Deadly Poison and Catalyst will deal 126 damage by themselves with that setup. Absolutely have done stuff like that to win runs.
Yeah taking an Accuracy without any shiv generators is moronic, but it'd also be moronic to skip a Terror + PK offered when your "poison deck" is struggling to deal damage.
Synergies are relatively overblown, you just need to scale. You don't scale by taking a 5th Bouncing Flask, and you also don't scale by taking a 5th Blade Dance (not counting ninja relic stuff). One of my recent wins was a deck where I won after taking an Act 3 Envenom and Catalyst in a deck that otherwise only had a Terror and one Accuracy for damage.

deck that relies on rushdown infinite spam without sufficient reliable block, then fails to draw rushdown before turn 2 and gets b***hslapped for 67

Maybe I'm the one that's not playing correctly, but my decks never get the chance to finish Act 3 if I don't have a block solution in place. Could also be a case of you not pathing aggressively enough after assembling the infinite to look for block solutions.

watcher doesn't want to remove fking strike are you joking, all she does is attack and get cards that let you attack more

ironclad on the other hand DOES want to remove strike because it's so easy to scale damage with vuln and 2-energy hit cards

          Anonymous

          >silent doesn't want to remove strike because she needs all the damage she can get to not be raped by elites
This is true, but I feel like you shouldn't be removing cards in general in Act 1 as Silent. If your first card remove is end of Act 1/Act 2, you generally should remove strikes. If you get the card remove events early Act 1 you remove (transform) the defends though, yeah.

Feels shitty doing it this way but my AC20's are on PS4 and tablet not PC. Actually pulling up that history you are correct. My last failing was vs Spear and Shield and it feels like it was four failed attempts between that and my three Heart runs with her.
Maybe I'm not as consistent with her as I thought but I had a three streak of runs making it to Heart without making it through.

I would start snap-picking TTTH and MF in this case then. Prioritize Halt and Wallop a bit more as well. There are a number of ways to block while doing small deck + dancing strategies, and until you get more comfortable navigating them I'd unironically just monkey pick all of the ones that show up.

    My problem with StS is:
    - There are no cute girls, doesn't really motivate me to play more
    - Very RNG, you can get good stuff that carries you. I'm sure you can win without RNG but you just know you can get lucky and win much easier
    - You never get the feeling of being strong and have to always worry, it's simply not fun
    - Repetitive
    - Builds are extremely limited, there's only a small handful of builds that can beat A20, others are trash. It's not fun. Rougelike deckbuilders that allow you to eventually be so strong that any build works to experiment is much more fun.

      Mods.
      >you just know you can get lucky and win much easier
This is the case for thousands of games and I doubt you have the same complaint about them.
      >You never get the feeling of being strong and have to always worry
Straight-up wrong. There are people in this very thread that have posted screenshots of faceroll games.
      >Builds are extremely limited, there's only a small handful of builds that can beat A20
      Also wrong.

Took me a week but I finally managed to do the minimalist challenge with ironlad. Survived by shuffling with shrug, pommel, and dropkick. Was praying for sundial to appear but it never showed up so I depended on a berserk I got from astro for extra energy. Ending up getting lucky in the second half of act 3 when I gambled to throw away my bash in an event before a hallway fight that led to the final shop. Not only did the shop have a thunderclap but there was also a bloodletting. And so my deck was finally assembled right before the act 3 boss.

The joy part and the most fun is when you create builds yourself and beat the game with that build.
In Slay the Spire, you cannot as only a few builds are viable.

      Anonymous

The challenge is assembling a solution on the go, which is almost never 1-1 identical with the previous one you won with.
The moment you talk about 'viable builds', you just tell the world you have no fricking idea how to play the game

Yeah, StS has no "build". That's unfortunate. I want to theorycraft like in Path of Exile. Then assemble it together and run with it.

      Anonymous

You never get the same cards offered at the same time.
You do not start with an assembled poison build, darkness orb build or whatever.

Every run is a differed challenge and you try to get the tools on the go.

      Anonymous

It's only same-y if you play same-y and idk how you can say a game filled with rng is "same-y". Map is rng, bosses are rng, rewards are rng, "?" are rng, shops, relics, etc etc.

Not to mention there's 4 characters with distinct mechanics and playstyles.

Frick yeah, finally increased my Alevel for Defect again, beat A18 just now. Good deck with just lots of focus, Glaciers and a lot of random/thunder and dark bolt generation for damage. MVP for Echo form, as usual.

Still almost lost the whole run on floor 1 because the 1 elite I fought just HAD to be fricking Nob. It's really unfair how much harder that guy is for Defect

    >oh just don't play skills, and ignore that all the good cards in your starting deck are skills :^)

But whatever, took like 60 damage on him and then managed to limber on succesfully, even no-hit the first boss (with some great RNG in my draworder, I'll admit).

Why is it called a "card game", when you don't seem to use cards for anything? Like, that OP picture, for example. What makes that a "card", and not just a random buff? Similarly, if the "cards" can be replaced with dice, it isn't really a card game!

      Anonymous

Have you considered killing yourself for making such atrocious posts

      Anonymous

Because it's a card that you can draft for your deck, and you have to draw it from your deck to play it. It's not a 1-time buff for the rest of the game.

        Anonymous

        >Because it's a card
Wow, can't argue with that, huh...

Dicerolls and pictures/icons/tiles/whatever would achieve the same thing. There's nothing "card-y" about any of this.

Hearthstone is a cardgame, because the cards themselves have character, and serve some purpose. In STS that doesn't seem to be the case.

oh you're just a baiting moron. Check okay, no sense in further commucation with you

      Anonymous

Because, it works how a real card game works.

You draw your cards from your deck
You use mana that refreshes every turn to play cards
Cards are put in your discard pile when you use them
Cards have interactions with each other, like the ability to discard or exhaust a card (with a card that can even bring back exhausted cards)

Calling them cards just makes a lot more sense then trying to come up with some weird specific flavor reason why your character's spells or attacks are semi-random each turn.

        Anonymous

        >Calling them cards just makes a lot more sense
I could (begrudgingly) accept this answer, if the game wasn't being marketed as a "cardgame". I feel like the cards themselves really should be the focus in a cardgame, and not just be tokens (or counters or dice) with a different name.

            >Even in OG MTG
Do you specifically mean the original cards from the early 90s...? Or just generally MTG cards? Because, all Magic cards from the past 30 years have looked BEAUTIFUL. They have character, they have grace. You could buy a card for its looks alone, as decoration or as a souvenir.

If the cards themselves don't stand out, it should be called a "cardgame".

worse yet is that these homosexuals would invest in specific cards too. So some games like mtg were more akin to stocks where failed cyrptobros would buy out X card so hard and fast that people would constantly see a 1-5$ card jump to 30-40$ overnight as one guy buys every listing to milk players
