>they’re all boring rpgs set in a gloomy dystopia and the characters are all emotionless bricks with unappealing designs
Undertale is different and actually gets its right by giving you characters to care about.
I couldn’t give the slightest of shits about who to spare and kill in an SMT game.

  1. There’s something about Toby’s games that just rub me the wrong way. It’s like they were simultaneously made to cater to the *holds up spork* Tumblr crowd and the people who hate that kind of shit. It’s probably apt to call the games (or me?) schizophrenic.

  2. I like Undertale well enough, but for toby it’s lightning in a bottle, he’ll be forever chasing that dragon and Deltarune will never scratch the itch

      • I’ve been playing games for longer than you have been alive

A lot of that was in the freeware version of OneShot, which released a year earlier than Undertale.

And even more was in Moon: Remix, which released much earlier.

Well then sadly, she proves him wrong because trying is exactly what she doesn’t do. Not only does she subject innocent people to Frankenstein experiments, but then she imprisons them AND FEEDS THEM DOG FOOD until Frisk/You free them from her control. No one calls her out on this and she continues with life as usual afterwards.

  3. i dont remember ever playing a game that

    knows you reloaded the save
has meta about exiting and installing the game
game that has a bossfight that pretends to crash your game
and the whole goat mom tging where you need to reload the save and the programming changes and now you can spare her

those things alone made me like undertale so much

not to mention its a test of your good being and humanity

its obvious you need to act and not fight!
Also an empathy test – its should be obvious to any normal person that monsters are not a threat, if you can read social cues by reading the text

  4. The game itself is fine.
Its just that the fanbase and everything else around it is so fucking obnoxious that it put a lot of people off playing it, which is a shame.

    • No it’s not you fucking moron. It didn’t even have something as basic as proper attack attributes for weapon, nor any sort of customization or player agency beyond selecting a checkpoint ending, which wasn’t even something original by then as there’s NES games with the same exact design.
UT doesn’t even let you choose equipment properly, that alone puts it below the average DQ or games like FFV in terms of depth, and if you want to compare it to actually deep systems like any SaGa game or some sim RPGs like Uncharted Waters or Lunatic Dawn it’s plain kiddy shit with barely even a fifth of the mechanics, and most of those are ill implemented as well, like positioning or AoE.
UT is just as mechanically archaic as the average console RPG from 20 years ago absolutely BTFOs it, Romancing SaGa 2 alone blows it out of the water and that’s just considering one game from Square’s own output, if you want to actually look at the SNES library it’s outdone even by some Banpresto games like Traverse, the fucking Banpresto that published the SRW games.
Even some Ascii Soft game like Dark Law is considerably deeper mechanically by playing in the same exact design field and it’s a 15 hours game with next to no budget.

Nobody who actually plays RPGs can pretend UT was even remotely interesting.

so just like any decent jrpg?
I couldn’t care less for le quirky retards so that was only another downside

Deltarune is so much better for gameplay though, the patterns are better across the board and it has grazing

    • >bullet hells without autism tier difficulty
Isn’t the supposed difficulty of "autistic" bullet hells offset by fixed patterns, smoother controls, and the ability to delete projectiles?

      • the problem for me is that usually there’s so much shit going on it all starts to look like a blur with a bunch of shit blowing up on the screen. I think that if Undertale was harder but still kept the simply black and white background I’d still enjoy it

  8. Because Undertale isn’t even an RPG, it’s a VN. An RPG is a game where the world and its inhabitants work through a pure layer of mathematical abstraction with no means for the player to avoid interacting with the world through said pure numerical abstraction, it might be hard for Ganker’s primate brain to process but that’s what RPGs fundamentally are, and that’s why things like Deus Ex, The Witcher, Souls games, Diablo and what have you will never be RPGs because the player’s mechanical inputs don’t work in concert with everything else, but rather against it.
"Choice and consequence" in non-PC progression terms, while welcome, is ultimately irrelevant if the game doesn’t work as an actual role-playing game, giving the player a means to ignore numerical abstraction means the game cannot be a roleplaying game because the PC is no longer playing on an even field with the rest of the numerical abstraction in the game, you can no longer have an actual roleplaying game, what you have is something entirely different with the trappings of both RPGs and other genres, the worst of both worlds.
Play true RPGs like Angband and Unlimited SaGa instead

    • Alphys is a cherry-pick honestly. She’s supposed to be the example that monsters can be bad. In her weakness she endangers not only you but her only friend, not to mention the fucking True Lab which could be forgivable if she fucking told the families, but no, she’s too cowardly. She’s not a good person until she’s absolutely forced to the limit to become a hero in the Genocide route.
