I've only play DQ8 and 11, also a bit of 5 bit it was just too slow paced for me to care. I will say I liked the other two. I've played most of the mainline FFs, I only beat about half of them and of those only half I would say I really enjoyed. So I guess technically by ratio DQ is better in my mind.

some of the stats/spells are bugged but you wouldn't know it without someone telling you. nobody was looking at debug output when they made the game a hit in the 80s. it's only a "mess" if you got your opinion from youtube

            Anonymous

Not that guy, but there's a lot bigger issues than just some spell bugs. Like mob enemies being stronger than the bosses. The bosses dying in 2 hits. The general pacing of the game. And 3/4 the skills being pointless. Final Fantasy III and V fixed most of these issues. Then later FF games broke them again...

I played DQ11 and have played most of the FF games. I kinda feel like having played DQ11 is going to mean I'm spoiled for previous DQ games, so I'm not interested in playing them. Is this a mistake? Would I still enjoy previous DQ games?

FF games change, at least a little, from iteration to iteration. One of DQ's big selling points is that it's largely the same over and over again, no?

      Anonymous

Dragon Quest XI is not like most DQ games. It's a lot more linear and story driven than most of the other games. In all honesty, it's closer to a game like Final Fantasy XII than the previous DQ games. Which is probably why so many FF fans love it. But basically, if you go back and play some of the others, you'll find them a lot more focused on exploration and npc interaction than DQXI is. Except maybe VI and VII which also focus on linear story.

Dragon Quest VIII and XI are about as opposite in design as you can get. Well, aside from some shared things like skill points and character types.

It was a disappointment for me because it lacked all the things that made Dragon Quest VIII good. Huge open world, searchable items in towns, amazing music, etc. And even the few things it did have, like NPC stories and alchemy, were made worse than VIII.

But also, this also proves how the common "DQ games are all the same" argument is totally wrong. They constantly change stuff from game to game. And not always for the better. Just like Final Fantasy.

FFVII is nowhere near even my top 10, but I played it for the first time in 2015 or so, and I'd say it deserved at least some of the praise it got.
It was carried hard by the setting, atmosphere/music, prerendered backgrounds, pretty decent 3D, and just overall standing out compared to all the template JRPGs of the time.
The story was just ok. The gameplay was nothing to write home about, but that was a negligible issue, all things considered.

I'm not going to claim that people unanimously decided it was the best one after playing through everything available, but I don't think it was purely the marketing.

DQXI and VIII are very different from each other. Not only mechanically, but in story as well. Your comparison would be like saying Final Fantasy V and XII are similar. And I hope you don't think that.

And they don't even look similar visually. Toriyama has really been changing his art style since DQIX. To the point that people theorize it's his assistants working on the DQ games now. Then on top of this, the design changes again in the FMV cutscenes, because a third party made them.

If there's one area where the DQ series is seriously lacking, it's music. They've never had a composer anywhere near as talented as Uematsu.

      Anonymous

Funny you say that. Because Uematsu himself said Sugiyama was his idol. And Sugiyama's music for DQ1-8 is some of the best out there. It's just 9 and 11 where things started to lag. Much like Uematsu's later OSTs weren't as amazing as the earlier ones.

And even within FF itself, Soken and Hamauzu have written stuff just as good as Uematsu.

        Anonymous

No, soken and the other guy haven't written anything close to uematsu. Sokens butt rock is tolerable in an ironic way but thats it. Kinda like those mid 2000s scream emo music videos.

If there's one area where the DQ series is seriously lacking, it's music. They've never had a composer anywhere near as talented as Uematsu.

Sugiyama is just as good as uematsu if not better. He just composes in a different genre that you don't enjoy because you don't have the ear for it. But I haven't heard anyone come close to sugiyama's proficiency in the type of music he created. Certainly not in videogames.

          Anonymous

          >No, soken and the other guy haven't written anything close to uematsu.
Hamauzu wrote the better songs in FFX while Uematsu wrote 10 versions of the same Zanarkand theme. And the whole OST of FFXIII is one of the best in Final Fantasy. The rest of FFXIII sucks, but the music was amazing.
          >Sokens butt rock is tolerable in an ironic way but thats it. Kinda like those mid 2000s scream emo music videos.
I think his best stuff is his orchestrated music. He was also told to copy other people's styles (especially in FFXIV) and ended up doing better than some of the composers he was imitating (especially Howard Shore). Being able to imitate a wide range of styles is an under appreciated skill. Uematsu did the same, though he did it willingly. Soken was told he had to copy big name Hollywood trends and ended up not only doing it, but surpassing the inspiration.

            >Hamauzu wrote the better songs in FFX while Uematsu wrote 10 versions of the same Zanarkand theme.
Well, the ff10 soundtrack was utterly forgettable outside of "To Zanarkand". That's also the only song I ever hear people talk about so looks like Uematsu blew the other 2 dudes the frick out.

              >Well, the ff10 soundtrack was utterly forgettable outside of "To Zanarkand".
Thunder Plains, Otherworld, Fight With Seymour, Mi'ihen Highroad, Suteki Da Ne and many others are remembered just as much or more than Zanarkand. And by ignoring those, you're also discounting Uematsu's work. He wrote two of those.

        Anonymous

Just because Sugiyama was Uematsu's idol doesn't necessarily mean Sugiyama is better. How many musicians cited Elvis as their inspiration and ended up being way better than he was? Many of them from the 60s-80s.
I agree about Soken. The sheer number of good songs and the variety in FF14 is amazing.
And say what you will about FF15, but the game still had amazing music.

Final Fantasy games are at least somewhat unique

      Anonymous

      >muh variety!
And the irony is, that's the thing killing Final Fantasy. People are tired of the games trying to reinvent the wheel. On the flip side, Dragon Quest adds tons of new features and styles each game. They just keep what worked from the previous game. Which is why each game gets longer and longer. And this has led to Dragon Quest XI being closer to what FF fans want from a FF game than FF games are.

        Anonymous

        >They just keep what worked from the previous game. Which is why each game gets longer and longer.
Is that supposed to be a good thing? Even if they carry over the mechanics that worked fine, why should an entirely new game become longer by default? This is a genre that already relies a lot on padding, and that padding adding up to excessive total playtime can easily be detrimental.

          Anonymous

Did you not understand the point of the post? Each DQ game takes what the previous game did and incorperates it into the next, much like Mario. Then adds new stuff. That's going to lead to the games getting longer.

As for filler, that's entirely subjective of what you think filler is. However, since multiple people keep bringing up how "slow" Dragon Quest is, I'm going to point out there's a point to it. Dragon Quest spends huge amounts of time letting the player grow to like the characters through interaction. As well as being able to explore the setting. In other words, worldbuilding is the focus. Rather than other series (like Final Fantasy) where set pieces and rushing to the next story cutscene is the focus. This style of storytelling isn't for everyone. Some people prefer the faster 'go to location and see a cutscene' like FF does. But others prefer the way DQ does it. The irony however is that the latest DQ game went for more of the FF approach.

            Anonymous

            >Each DQ game takes what the previous game did and incorperates it into the next, much like Mario. Then adds new stuff. That's going to lead to the games getting longer.
That only makes sense if they're literally recycling content from the previous game.
Otherwise, why would it become longer just from retaining the things that worked and refining the rest, if there's still a whole new game of actual content to write/make? Do they add more mechanics that make the combat take longer or make you stop more often when going from A to B? Or do they intentionally make the story longer each time just because they can afford to?

I really do not have a clue what you're trying to say.

              Anonymous

              >I really do not have a clue what you're trying to say.
Let's use an example. When Dragon Quest IV came out, there was a side character named Hiomi (Healie). A monster companion that joins Ragnar. He was there just as a place holder, but the character got a huge positive response from fans. So as a result, Horii expanded the monster companions concept in the next game. And since then, there's been a variation on the monster companion in almost every sequel. This isn't "recycled" content but them using a similar concept in a new way. Like in Dragon Quest XI, they don't have monster companions. But there is one side story where a healslime teams up with Erik, has an homage to Healie and Ragnar.

This is an example of how one mechanic keeps being used in the sequels. Added with the hundreds of other mechanics DQ has introduced over the series, you start to get a lot of stuff fans expect in each sequel. And that adds more content (and time) to each game. Then, each game also adds it's own unique story and content.

Final Fantasy could do the same thing. And they do, but in a very limited way. They'll bring back summons and chocobos. But they don't bring back hundreds of other mechanics or call backs they could have. Because they want to do something new. This is seen as FF strength, always doing something new. But I'd argue they could do new stuff without tossing out the old stuff fans like.

i dislike dragon quest cause it does combat, jobs and magic more unorthodoxly
it disables you from attacking specific enemies, instead separating them by species into groups that are targeted collectively, with one of which being randomly chosen for single-target attacks
it divides fire magic into two lines based on targeting, makes its ice magic increase its targets each tier, and for some reason makes lightning magic exclusive to the hero class with its targets being reduced each tier in exchange for increased power

FF meanwhile is usually a lot more flexible and modular with its jobs and abilities, with its own magic being largely adherent to the same three-tier system with the only differences in offensive magic being their associated element, as well as being able to be single- or group-cast by choice at the cost of the spell's power being divided among the targets or otherwise penalized

      Anonymous

The group combat mechanic is what makes Dragon Quest stand out from other series. It's also quite brilliant when you learn how to use the system to your advantage. It's more efficient and faster, if you use group weapons like whips/boomerangs and group spells. It also produces more variety to gameplay, since you don't just spam single or AOE spells for everything.

Also, some of the examples you named are wrong. Like there's single, group and AOE fire spells. No idea what you mean by 'two types of lines'.

Something a lot of people don't seem to realize about Dragon Quest is it's not a system about dealing higher damage. It's about maximizing efficiency. Sometimes it's more efficient to hit a group than doing an all field attack to all enemies. Sometimes it's better to focus on one enemy rather than trying to focus on groups. Sometimes it's better to save MP, while other times it's actually more efficient to use more MP to save HP. And then you factor in items that can be used for no MP cost and switching weapons in battle.

        >The group combat mechanic is what makes Dragon Quest stand out from other series.
yeah but i still dislike the lack of control
        >No idea what you mean by 'two types of lines'.
        frizz and sizz
        >Something a lot of people don't seem to realize about Dragon Quest is it's not a system about dealing higher damage. It's about maximizing efficiency.
this is new to me. i get maintaining the party's resources in order to make them effective as a group, but i haven't seen many examples that at least explicitly reward balancing focus over enemy formations
but with final fantasy i do really like the fact that there's always at least one way to split the balance in half, be it through grinding methods or character setups, while i haven't seen anything similar from dragon quest

I like dq's cartoony artstyle more than final trantasy's gay artstyle. change my mind

If Final Fantasy would have gone for a more cel shaded or anime style, I would like it more. So I don't disagree. However, Square spend literally billions on pushing CGI technology and realism. So they're not going to switch now.

Definitely agree. However the ff games that tried to implement the original art style or a version of it (like dissidia 012) give dragon quest a run for its money in the art department.
But it's very hard to compete with Toriyama.

I played my first Dragon Quest game (11) and lost interest after 2 hours. I was never a big fan of the Toriyama character design and it seemed like a generic farm boy that's actually from a divine blood line and destined to save the kingdom plot. Also how do you not go insane listening to stock orchestra music hour after hour?
