You know, i'm playing Unreal Tournament 2004 right now, vanilla, nothing fancy, just the widescreen/fov fix, doing the tournament and some instant action, and realized i'm having so much FUN with it like no new games make me feel

This ancient 20 years old game feels fricking TIGHT. Looks incredible still, effects are incredible, controls and presentation, and needs nothing else but a small patch just to fix widescreen support, which actually could already be kinda fixed with a simple console command. The jumping, weapons and pure gameplay is exhilarating and the duels feel tense and personal, not to mention the shitton of content it already has, along with the banging music.

My question is, what the frick is the industry doing if this is still the peak of shooters? jesus fricking christ, Quake Champs isn't too bad but holds NOTHING against this.

That's why I like Deep Rock Galactic. It feels like good ol shooter with nice horde mode. There is even rocket launcher you can load with multiple rockets to fire off as a big salvo.

The clamber mechanic is a bit floaty but apart from that it feels tight for a unreal engine title.

UT2004 has the absolute best art design I have ever seen
Something about the engine and the assets makes some levels look so much bigger and denser than they actually are, its almost like when you were a kid reading a story and your mind was filling in the blanks

I mean, if there's some newfriend or a young zoomer that has never tried something like this, he/she wouldn't feel the "old" in this game, and would realize how fun this is. Why the frick Epic doesn't?

This could be re release as is, for free, with sold skins and a "Season Tournament ladder" or some shit, and would do as a business. Everything is already there.

I keep telling my friends, since they never experienced this game on its peak, how good this is still, and they won't listen either or don't really believe it either. When one of them actually tried it, he was hooked and we had some duels right after.

It has no atmosphere though it just feels like a tech demo with a generic sci fi setting. UT99 and even 3 had an actual atmosphere to it.

What mods do I need to play it nowdays? I miss the lan parties with my cousins. Gaming was alive back then.

      Anonymous

You don't need any mods, just a FOV/Res fix that is on the Steam forums

What are you playing against? Bots?
Or does this have a single player campaign?

Yes, bots because Epic killed the main servers. They were kinda desolate anyways. Still, now there's OpenSpy community servers, you just need to change the IP to connect to. Bots are really good anyways, a real challenge

2004 and UT3 both have a single player campaign and even team management aspects.

hot take: UT3 was unjustly shat on because it caught a lot of the flack for being somewhat similar to GoW optically, but it was an amazing fricking game

Agreed, I do play UT3 as well against bots. It's really good and deserved better, still will be remembered as the one that just didn't had as much content as UT2004, but being honest, no other game has as much content.

        Anonymous

You make it seems 2004 is better than ut3, or at least has more content. Is there any reason to play ut3 when 2004 exists?

          Anonymous

          Well, actually

UT3 is heavier and feels closer to UT99. Maps are "smaller" or feel smaller because of it, even though in reality it's almost the same. But UT3 has this gritty, chunky feel to weapons akin to GoW, specially the Impact Hammer, which it just splatters people and your screen with gibs. Completely brutal. Also the Spider Mines that play an animation when you get killed with them, crawling to your screen/face and deploying a drill to the skull, then exploding.

Maps are beautiful and runs excellent. Lacks content compared to UT2004 but still it's pretty good.

UT4 was UT3 gameplay (which is UT99 gameplay) but perfected. You dodged with shift and that made you very nimble but without being an exploit, and actually you needed to be careful when doing it because you could get predictable and eat a rocket when landing. Epic killed it like the buttholes they are.

The brown and bloom didn't fare well, especially since UT2004 was so colorful.
Cut on movements and verticality of the game didn't please many fans.
        But I still loved it.
        And Rom fricking Di Prisco.

I think UT3 suffered from the same thing as Quake 4: the system requirements for the upgraded graphics meant that a lot of people couldn't run the game at good framerates compared to continuing to play UT2K4/Q3, so people just kept playing the old games. It's one of the reasons why multiplayer game devs learned they need to be able to cater to the lowest common denominator.

Why did it take so many years for CS2 to come out with only marginal graphics improvements? Because if the game ran at less than 150fps on a average PC everyone would complain and go back to playing other stuff.

No AAA dev is trying to make a fun game that's timeless, they're trying to send a gay message and make a store. If they make the game too good, people won't buy the next game so they fear cannibalizing their sales.

    Amazing variety
Could hop between massive vehicle onslaught maps

since like the mid 2000s venture capitalists latched onto gaming as an industry and have been compelling devs to keep broadening appeal, it's how you get shit like Forspoken and Overwatch's new character who appeal to exactly no one. they're convinced that there's an audience that is even dumber and more easy to placate waiting for them if they dumb their games down even more.

I'm amazed how it actually needs no fiddling around besides the res/fov fix. IT JUST WERKS. And doesn't feel outdated, responds incredible, and the voices and special effects are on point. Textures and scenarios are beautiful.

Frick the Clan Lord though. I've tried, i really did try, to beat him on masterful to unlock the skins, but I just can't. HyperBlast as the final map is so fricking kino, and the soundtrack makes it one of the most incredible experiences in videogames, but hes just fricking cheating and knows where you are, and god forbid his bot ass gets the Minigun because spread doesn't mean shit if he can control perfectly the sway.

God DAMN i want to play some deathmatch against somebody, but even then, people only wanted to play ONS and being honest the novelty was cool, but it's a shittier Battlefield, and BF is already kinda shitty. Domination and mother fricking Bombing Run are the true gladiatorial sports of the future.
