Used to get really mad watching the show and seeing kids failing the most basic games. In retrospect, there was most likely massive amount of lag between the phone and when you saw it on TV. I can't understand how it was even possible to play it, there was probably some dude in the studio playing and making it to the end so a a couple of callers could win.

What's worse is that even if they made it all the way to the end it was still a gamble if you got it right.

No, they had the amigas hooked up to the telephone, so whatever button was pressed, would translate to joystick presses. I mean it's as simple as "if phone button pressed is 4 -> press LEFT". Once you have the modem hooked up to listen to incoming numbers, it's easy.

      Anonymous

There was a bit of lag, but you also have to keep in mind that the kids playing were controlling the game with their house phone, and thus often sitting (or standing) halfway across the room seeing the TV screen from an awkward angle.

      >there's a rumor saying those games were fake because it'd be impossible to play due to the delay between the television and the telephone

They weren't fake. We had a shitload of them over here, from simple domino to being able to play Super Mario Bros on a NES on a live show by phoning in:

They even talk about how it worked on the same principle as fax machines.

        Anonymous

what do you think the input lag was? 500ms?
those Hugo games needed precision to play, they weren't turn based like domino

The kid on that video can beat the first few levels of Super Mario and even make perfect jumps on the flagpole at the end on each level, so it couldn't have been too bad.

              >he died a lot, and made mistakes typical of someone playing with a lot lag

It was a gift show where you could win stuff based on the amount of points you can get in the game, so it was a common tactic to use the turtle shell on stage 1 to rack up 10k points and die, then repeat while you had lives. I used to watch the show when it aired on TV, everyone played it like that.

also note that the people who phoned in were CHILDREN. I doubt you played Mario Bros better when you were 6 years old.

Didn't expect a random Hungarian video in this thread. I listened to the video and he doesn't explain how this was done. Did the guy have a special NES at home and was essentially streaming the game to the TV station? Because I don't understand how was he able to run and jump at the same time without a controller. You wouldn't be able to do that using a phone dial.

          Anonymous

          >I listened to the video and he doesn't explain how this was done
He mentions some time in the middle that they keep getting questions about how it works, and he says that it uses the same principle as the fax machine. Probably also required a tone dial phone. Apparently they also had to send out button press phones to some of the kids since those were very rare in Hungary in 1990.

The kid playing in the video is active in the youtube comments section btw. He says he played it in the studio, they had a NES hooked up to a phone and to the broadcast, and there was a 1-2 second lag. And that the kid also had a NES and spent a lot of time practicing the game at home.

            >The kid playing in the video is active in the youtube comments section btw.
Interesting, because I don't see any comments from the uploader on that video. Am I getting region locked from the YouTube comment section?

I figured they had to some kind of setup beforehand, because they had a picture of him in the broadcast. Watching the video though, we're given the impression that he is playing from home. Do you think this was done to make the NES seem more advanced than it is? Because from the sounds of it, they could have just had him come into the studio at that point. Would have been cheaper for everyone involved.

        >They even talk about how it worked on the same principle as fax machines.
That just raises further questions. A fax machine has a modem and encodes arbitrary bitmaps as audible noise. To say it works like a fax machine implies a client device being used by the end user to send encoded controller information to the studio, not just a plain old touch tone phone.

          Anonymous

The fax machine comment was made by the game show host so possibly not technically accurate. I think what they meant was that they take the incoming tones and convert it to data they can feed into the NES. Which, again, is not that difficult, and consider this was done in a country who started developing NES games by reverse engineering the ICs (then before publishing, Nintendo asked them where they got the devkits from...).

I don't know anything about the technology involved but I'd also assume that you cannot transmit two button presses at once, if you're relying on tones. All the button presses would have to be done in sequence, which makes sense for a game like in the OP (left and right) but how would you capture movement of someone pressing "right", jumping, and running at the same time?

In Turkish Hugo a kid has said frick Hugo after he lost. Presenter tried to calm him said entire Turkey is watched. Kid has said frick you and entire Turkey.
All these years presenter of the show has lied said such an event didn't took place. He said there are no records available. (Fricker even destroyed the records) If proven I will buy a car to person who proves it. ((Fact checkers)) believed him said that was an urban rumor.
A few weeks ago they found cameraman of the show. He explained everything in detail. We have proof such an event took place.
It's not a fricking urban rumor. They tried taking away one of the best part of our childhood.

There was actually a similar situation in Polish kid television, but in that case it was either the host or the voice actor for the main character, which was a teddy bear (can't remember which). Basically at the end of one of the episodes, the guy thinking they're already off the air said something like "and now dear children, kiss the bear in the ass". Obviously, they were still live.

That game had to be one of the most expensive games to play. How much did they charge per minute to play? Probably the same as it costs to call sex workers, I'd imagine.

      >For Hugo and its related television program projects, ITE made the custom-built computer system named ITE 3000, able to convert telephone signals into control commands for the characters in the game, allowing the callers to remotely interact with the action on TV from their homes during the live broadcast. This complex and difficult to use system was based on two Amiga 3000 computers combined with a new audio control system, MIDI sampler, DTMF system, and other hardware, all of which reportedly cost $100,000.

And when you called, but couldn't play (they'd choose one caller, after all), I bet they made you wait on the line, too.

          Anonymous

In our country it worked like this:
You would call the studio after the show ended, there would be a 30 minute window where you could call. You would send in a sentence about the current level (every week it would be a different stage, forest, mountain, etc) and they would "pick" three winners (though they probably just bundled in the best answers, always limericks, and then drew three out of a hat) and then the studio would actually call the winners, not the other way around.

            Anonymous

            That sounds actually reasonable then.

Yeah. It beats the studio having to wait for someone to call them.
I remember some episodes having dropped calls and the host going "do NOT call us. Just stand by your phone, we will call you" like a lying casting director.
Oh and I just remembered, every Friday they didn't get calls. On Fridays they would take one winner from each day before (Mon-Thu) and have them in the studio to play live, but only callers who would actually save Hugo's family, for a chance at a big prize. It's a small country so it wouldn't be too long a drive for most families.

In Sweden they didn't use phones at all, everyone just played in the studio all the time.

        >expensive
in Brazil you would have to call during the week to leave your name on a list and if your name was chosen they would call you back when the show aired so it only cost the price of a regular phone call. Unfortunately, every fricking kid was calling the same number so I was never able to even let my name on said list

The lag is clearly visible when you watch some videos of the show from back then. Most of the time Hugo reacts correctly to things that he should have reacted to a good few seconds earlier

I remember some kids complaining on air that they had pressed the button but the character didn't respond and these complaints were very frequent. I guess that the only ones able to beat the game were the ones smart enough to quickly master the delay and adjust their timings accordingly

Oh man it was my childhood dream to call and play on this show, but here in Argentina the show aired at around 11am, when most kids were still on the house getting ready to go to school, but since i went to school in the morning (7am to 12am) when i get back home i was only able to catch the end of the program
fun fact: here in Argentina we also had our own rip-off Hugo show, it was called Kito Pizza, it played exactly like Hugo with the caller having to press the number that was prompted by the presenter on the phone
With the difference that the game used early CGI graphics very similar to Reboot and also it was also bout delivering pizza
