I’m playing Ghost of Tsushima Directors cut at 1080p and 60hz with no HDR or fancy bullshit and it looks amazing a runs like a well oiled machine, and to add input to your thread…I will never outgrow vidya, and I will never go 4k HDR again until my ride or die 1080p panel dies, I’ve had it for 7yrs already.

How come video games are the only entertainment medium that gets this treatment? And why do I only see it perpetuated on Ganker?

      Anonymous

Because vidya is an interactive medium. You're not just having the experience conveyed to you, you're actually going on the journey yourself. To some people, that'll always convey some degree of childish escapism, as you could instead be engaging in the real world and exploring what it has to offer, especially as you grow older and should be growing in capabilities and resources to do so.

Vidya certainly isn't the only entertainment medium that gets this treatment. TTRPGs get flak for exactly the same reasons, the only difference is that tabletop games without a sense of playing pretend are generally not ridiculed or declared to be "to be grown out of," whereas vidya that lacks playing pretend still got ripped on for the most part. There's reasons why I'd venture as to why, but they're certainly less concrete, especially as things have changed in the past 40 years.

Late 30s: I've outgrown types of video games but the modern world is so horrible it's one of the only viable forms of entertainment/escapism. I think I'm starting to unironically. I'm just so tired of it all. Almost every fricking game just trying to get as much cash out of me as possible. Multiplayer focused games constantly changing basic systems to make the game easier for casual players and the games that don't do this are barren ghost towns. I'm sick of games releasing unfinished and souring the whole experience. I'm sick of new installments in a series I like being less well crafted than previous entries. I'm so fricking sick of a cool game releasing but on none of the platforms I have access to. I'm just sick of it all man. This shit is exhausting and for what? After all the games I've played I can tell you that like 70% of them were mediocre at best. Even the way most games are designed is annoying. They go out of their way to waste your time with long animations and wait times and meters you need to fill etc etc. I don't have time for this shit anymore. That's why I game probably once a month now. Gaming just fricking sucks now. Or maybe I just opened my eyes to what gaming is really like.

My habits will just change, that's all. I'll probably play less complicated titles, focus more on replays, and gravitate away from certain genres in favour of others which is basically what I've been doing for the past couple of years anyway. Video game doomers are the types who played a single genre exhaustively for 10+ years then start asking WHAT IF VIDEO GAMES WERE BAD ALL ALONG instead of taking two seconds to look inward.

You definitely outgrow video game communities/discussion/news though. That's exclusively the realm of teenagers, tribals and homosexuals. Stop talking about games and actually play them.

I read and I game. With no real friends to actually share interests with, it's not like I do board games or anything like that, and I'm not a movie person, with TV only being a side thing I have for background noise most of the time. Gaming isn't about "growing up", it's about engrossing my brain with activity that no other entertainment does the same way. The only person that has to grow up is you, someone obsessed with the idea that these are just playable toys.
