This was the most grating part of Resident Evil 4 Remake for me. I can't express how much I despise this kind of shit, it is the most cringe shit I've ever seen.

old RE was funny because the Japanese were mimicking and mildly mocking American writing, and it had an ironic-feel to it that made it into a funny parody of a zombie genre
Nu-RE they got an actual goyslop writers to sanitize it, and the joke went over their head due to them having a terminal Hollywood brain

Yeah. In the original Leon was a dork but he was a dork during cutscenes or when he was talking to others. Plus he was a dork in an endearing way because he WAS a badass and his dorkyness wasn't because he was making a pop culture reference. He was a dork in a relatable timeless way. He wasn't making quips to himself at random in the middle of nowhere.

Videogame MC quips are kinda like jump scares in movies.
It has a terrible reputation among autists who want to hate it on principle.
But when used sparingly and effectively it can feel great. By "effectively" I mean when the quip evokes the current feelings of the player, i.e. they say just what you're thinking in a wittier manner. Or it doesn't even necessarily have to be witty, it can just be what you're thinking

    Whedonisms, named after Joss Whedon

      This.
The form of quippy, irreverent, overly sarcastic dialogue OP is describing was derived from Joss Whedon's works.
To be clear, no fault lies with him.
The method he pioneered was novel in his time but the legacy left behind has since outgrown its creator, and over time it has become increasingly diseased and malformed.
A copy of a copy of a copy. Festering until it degrades to the point of insulting even lowest of demographics.

The homosexuals writing this stuff are the same age as me. They're out of touch 30+ year old nerds that live in California that want to seem cool and witty but they just come off as homosexuals.

      >”the times”
This “trend” is pushed by 30 year old millennials in the media industry, literally everyone else both older and younger fricking hates it. I’m a zoomer (24) and my grandpa is a boomer (72) and we both find marvelslop intolerably cringe. My uncle is a millennial and he’s obsessed with all the typical marvel quippy soi shit.
