The more I play this game, the more I don't understand how people call it a masterpiece.
It's the most underwhelming FS title possible.

I'm about halfway through and I can honestly say it's so boring I'm only playing it because people say it's "difficult" but it's just boring.

I share your sentiment in that i think its boring, but i think people like because its aesthetically very pleasing (more so than the other games), instead of constantly hitting your enemy like a god damn balloon doll that just pops and deflates into the ground after a time you are for the most part hitting their weapon, make them back out and only when you "beat" them you get to have a very visceral hit in their body, ike a real battle. Similarly, you are not mr.dash anime man or sonic the hedgehog when evading blows, you are defending with your sword, just like real melee battles go. People look at this and probably confuse the game looking more like a real fight with a better combat system.

you can focus their posture in more interesting ways
attacking deals posture damage, vitality reduces posture buildup, and offense means the enemies cant attack as much and have to mostly do counter attacks (for human enemies that is), so you get easier deflects
and then theres the prosthetics and combat arts which can be used to get a ton of hits in for massive damage to both vitality and posture, or just enhance your moveset and give more interesting ways to chip at the enemies. also stuff to counter their moves like shuriken to knock shit out of the air, shuriken/spear to close gaps, etc

Souls and Elden Ring are action RPG with more emphasis on the RPG. Sekiro is a very grounded character action game. Unfortunately most people playing Souls and Elden Ring have never played character action and as such, suck and refuse to play the game for what it offers. Personally I wasn't that impressed by Sekiro's combat when you compare it to literally any other competently developed character action game.

Sekiro was the most overrated shit I've ever played. People froth over the combat but it's actually extremely shallow and an absolute slog most of the time. You have to grind for hours just to unlock combat moves that are mostly useless. The thing that was supposed to be the star of the game, the prosthetics, are mostly useless aside from specific situations and ammo limited, so experimentation is thrown out the window. One of the worst things I hated about it that people never mention was the dogshit level design that was just annoying to navigate though.
Literally the only thing it has going for it is the style and setting, but most of that style is locked behind the one-note combat system.

      Anonymous

      >You have to grind for hours
literally only true for the most lategame skills that will take 30 minutes at most, ng+ bosses give fat exp
      >prosthetics and combat arts are useless outside of specific situations
      absolute moron detected

I find it funny that people managed to get filtered by sekiro's SIMPLICITY of all things. The moment the game doesnt have a ton of superfluous moves, flashy easily comboable careless strikes or the likes, and instead just basic tricks that dont make themselves obvious, people start complaining about the game being r1+l1 simulator. meanwhile something extremely basic flame vent + living force singlehandedly destroys the vast majority of human bosses (or just oil if they have little flame resistance)
its not the game's fault you didnt even try

      Anonymous

      >You have to grind
Mad because bad. There is no grinding in Sekiro. I wish I could have good arguments with people over what the game could do better, but so much of it is just coming from people who unironically just got filtered.

        Anonymous

You absolutely have to grind if you want to get all the unlockable skills, that's obviously what he was referring to, not grinding to make the game easier or some shit.

          Anonymous

Only the very last few skills you haven't unlocked yet take a good amount of points to get and you don't have to grind them. They carry on to NG+ and by that point you should know they're not going to carry you through the game. The way he phrased it made it sound like it was some huge deal when it isn't. You can beat the game without a single sword skill.

That just proves how fricking shallow the combat is

It is what you make of it. Mixing the sword skills and prosthetics into the combat feels and looks awesome when you're crushing some boss you had trouble with before, but yes it is mostly just for style.

      >the dogshit level design that was just annoying to navigate though.
What the hell man? The reason people never mention it is because it's the best level design in the series since DS1.

Played 2, then 1, then 3, on Xbox. Then I played BB. emulated DeS, then Sekiro, then Elden ring, on PC.

    >DeS
DeS was fun, having played pretty much the rest of the series it felt really easy and linear. I also couldn't experience online, so I feel like I missed out and will never play the true experience.

    >DS1
I think it's the best, even with the "shit" 2nd half. The second half just falls off compared to the GOATed 1st half because it becomes linear like the rest of the franchise. I played it on 360 when it went free with gold so it was fairly active but not crazy so. Didn't really experience active PvP until the Remaster way later. It was a huge step up from DS2 as far as levels design and general gameplay goes. I remember wondering why they made 2 worse in so many ways.

    >DS2
Started with it. Main issue was AGL and hitboxes since I didn't know what that was until my 2nd or 3rd character atleast. I had the best online experience with it out of all the games and best replayability. Still pretty bad when I compare it to everything though. But it has the upside of being the last "Old" Souls game which plays fundamentally different from every game after.

    >BB
Only played 1 playthrough through the base game and DLC because it wasn't my PS4. missed alot of stuff apparently. Because of that I only really have 1st-playthrough googles so I probably remember it more fondly. When I played it, online was dead, so couldn't properly experience that. After playing 3, it was great, exploring the world was about as enjoyable as DS1, the same mood and atmosphere was all there with the mob encounters too. The combat was fun, but every build was basically a dex build.

    >DS3
The combat was better, but everything else was alot more boring and safe. World was the most linear and hallway centric. By far the worst PvP in the series too. imo, the worst game in the franchise. Yah, the gameplay is better than 2, but I don't mind shit games, but I hate soulless ones.

      Anonymous

      >Sekiro
From's one true action game. Compared to Souls, the levels and world are all extremely linear, even worse than DS3. But that's not the focus at all. The gameplay/combat is by far the best From has made. Although your 1st playthrough becomes trivial the moment you realize you can spam the deflect button and basically deflect everything. Because of the lack of RPG mechanics, didn't have the drive to play it much after my first playthrough. I don't judge it on the same scale since it's a different genre pretty much.

      >Elden Ring
The first playthrough was amazing, It's DS3, but not a hallway simulator, most of the actual levels are linear, but the world is non-linear due to being open world atleast. The small dungeons are varied enough early on. I liked the combat changes from DS3 since it's basically just DS3, except bosses will actually punish roll spam. The PvP was also an improvement from DS3 because it brought back the "everything is broken" philosophy from DeS-DS2 which is way more fun. Replayability outside of PvP was kinda ass though.

    Critical/Objective
    DS1 > Bloodborne > Sekiro = Elden Ring > DS3 > Demon's Souls >>>>> DS2

I liked Demon's back in the day, and Dark 1 was okay on release. I didn't really like the DLC, it felt lazy for add-on content.
Cannot bring myself to finish 2 because it's so bad
Bloodborne interested me the most because of its visual style and trick weapons, but the multiplayer was terrible and the game looks and runs like shit because you cannot turn off the trash post-fx that muddy the screen
I never bought 3 myself, played offline but apparently quit right before the end because I just lost all interest, everything had been copy/pasted from a previous game
Sekiro felt like a schizophrenic mess that failed to excel in any particular area, it's not an RPG so I'm very harsh on the combat and exploration
Elden Ring is too fricking big and recycles the same small pool of content so much, it has so many enemies that outright feel like they don't belong in the game, and the game was blatantly unfinished on release. When they started patching in content, I stopped playing because I was past a lot of it and couldn't finish those questlines, I felt cheated. The game is so fricking padded out I couldn't see myself doing another full run back to where I was, and quit out of frustrated spite. It doesn't help that the gameplay in general wasn't holding me, I was just hunting for fashion.

I don't know, I haven't really had pure fun with these games since early Dark 1 days.

    any tips?
How do i get dragon rot and how do i get rid of it? I dont know what truly dying means.
As sometimes i die but don't get it.
Is it timed and people will die soon or is it event based and i can only die a certain amount before characters die.

I beat the red giant dude that grabs you.
Why are the grabs so bullshit?
Sometimes he turns midair and grabs me or i just teleport to his hands for a grab.
Other times I'm clearly in the way but he jumps over me and misses me completely and injust get shoved out of his path.

the game is super inconsistent meaning one time your combos will work and you won't necessarily get punished for it
and the next attempt will mean your combo will be interrupted because you didnt
      -use some dog shit skill
      or
-for some reason you can't deflect an attack that isn't the red icon thing

you can literally stand there and deflect all day with perfect timing to win (which is what the game wants) but deflect + all the skills they give you are flat out boring

woo hoo i can press b to parry a red icon attack and the bosses posture goes up
      wow masterpiece

you find out how to get rid of blood rot as you progress

You made a mistake. Sekiro is far fairer than any of the souls games, it's why it can still be so difficult and yet still so fun rather than frustrating. You beat isshin after getting destroyed for hours and it's exhilarating rather than fed up exhaustion. No game has ever gotten me as pumped as sekiro has.
        >you can literally stand there and deflect all day with perfect timing to win (which is what the game wants)
Also not true. The game wants you to be aggressive and in the enemy's face and that means taking their attacks and dishing out your own. There's also enemies like owl or demon of hatred or the monkey who you need to attack or deflecting will not get you far at all.

And of course there's the players who want even more, like this

          Anonymous

          That's your own experience
I'm pretty sure I'm 60% done with the game and no boss has left me feeling accomplished nor "that was worth my time"
I'm pretty much done with the game because the play style is just not fun for me.
          >There's also enemies like owl or demon of hatred or the monkey who you need to attack or deflecting will not get you far at all
Yeah that's what I don't like. Just boring overall. I don't think the game is difficult by far so I agree with you on that, just the options presented are so fricking boring.

Even watching the most OP player play perfect runs looks boring as frick.
          Game is not for me.

It's a very short game for a good player. The length comes from getting your shit pushed in over and over.
If you're good at the game and the playstyle just isn't for you, you'd likely have beaten it by the time you got fed up with it.
            >Even watching the most OP player play perfect runs looks boring as frick.
If that video isn't the hypest shit then yeah, game isn't for you, go play something else that you'd enjoy.

In true souls fashion, all your exploration is rewarded with garbage.

I don't understand how someone could love Elden Ring and hate DS3 when they play almost exactly the same
Elden Ring is essentially Dark Souls 3-2 with some QoL improvements

Because DS3 is bland as frick. I'd rather play a failed attempt at something new like DS2 than a a safe rehash of old ideas like DS3. Elden Ring takes the foundation laid out by DS3 and adds tons of unique stuff on top, which makes 3 completely obsolete.

    >deflect for hours
Literally doesn't happen unless you back off for long periods of time and they regen their posture. There's also the double chop ichimonji that you can get early that helps chunk their posture and clear your own. This is not even including the posture damage from mikiri counters are the fire crackers.

    >-until their vitality is low

It's a sign of being really bad at the game if you are resorting to beating bosses by HP damage.

The combat system of Sekiro is the most elegant of all fromsoft games. Getting successful parries (deflects) contributes to defeating one phase of a boss, but attacks on the HP bar is also not wasted in that it helps build up posture damage.

The only style of play this game doesn't favor is the Dark Souls 3 method of dodge and maybe R1 every 30 seconds. You can even adopt the shield meta by using the umbrella if you wanted to.

Bruh the game literally tells you if the enemies posture recovers quickly, you have to lower their vitality somewhat.

enemies drop so many vials it's impossible to need grinding beyond maybe first playthrough (and even then it's not that bad).

          >I was busy in another thread, but I'm back here, time to shit on those smoothbrain
Farming blood vials is like the "draw" system in FF8, it exist for a purpose, but does not mean that you need to absolutely use it or play the game like this.
But of course, since most of you are so fricking moronic, you all end up thinking this way: "if it exist, then I should use it, and if possible, never find or learn a more optimized way".

In Bloodborne, the blood vials not being refilled when you die is meant to force you to be careful on how much you use it, this not only explained in the story (hunter abusing the blood vials and losing their humanity), but also on the core philosophy concept of the Bloodborne battle mechanic, which have been specifically designed to fix the "rough" edge of the Dark Souls battle mechanic, which are:
          >close distance to target
          >attack
          >get hit
          >try to retreat in a safe area
          >heals
          >close distance to target
          >rinse and repeat
Which end up making the fight a complete "cat and mouse" play between you and your target. Because of this, BB does have a faster movement, dodge and shorter animation for healing, a stagger system and many more features and game design change to force you to be more aggressive (lack of real "shield", counter with guns, blood pellets etc...).

Finally, the blood vials not refilling is the core mechanic needed for the rally system, a mechanic that nobody would use if those blood vials where getting refilled, since not taking any risk is better than taking a risk after getting hit. As soon as you understand the importance of the rally system and start to use it regularly, you will quickly realize that your blood vials are diminishing at a very very low rate, to a point where farming/buying them is not even needed at all.

Farming for blood vials incorporates gameplay into the theme of the game. You are hungry for blood and methodically slaughter people just to fuel your own hunger. But if you were stronger, you wouldn't need the blood.

    >Dark souls 1, best world design, bosses are good, good lore. Combat is rigid, backstabs are easy and look bad, terrible netcode, lost izalith sucks
    >Sekiro. Great game, great bosses. No build variety, only one weapon.
    >Dark souls 2 (both versions) lots of areas to explore, cool npcs, lots of stuff to collect. Bosses are just okay, some areas are a huge pain in the ass more then any other in the entire lineup.

    DeS = atmosphere
DaS = I know it’s a meme but world building in the first half
Ds2 = before ER, this game had builds going for it but now, I’m not sure.
Ds3 = best bosses in the series by far
Bb = aesthetic. Cool, unique weapons. And I actually enjoy running the chalices whenever I revisit this game
    Sekiro = best combat
ER = some of the best levels, if not the best levels in all of these games. The legacy dungeons really are something

Demons souls: A grade rating. Still holds up because FS never bothered to make a proper sequel.
Dark souls: S grade. The only Fromsoft game that really matters.
Dark souls 2: C grade. not much to say here that hasn't been said 1000x times
Bloodborne: A+. Would have been S tier if not for the capped 30 fps framerate and FPS issues.
Dark souls 3: B-. Take everything bad about Dark Souls 2 and polish it really hard instead of going back to the drawing board? hard pass.
    Sekiro: A-. Its too long.
Elden Ring: C+ grade. spiritual successor to Dark Souls 2 and 3, the worst games Miyazaki era fromsoft ever made with a heavy dose of ubisoft RPG level design thrown in for good measure.

    >"prosthetics are useless outside of gimmicky hardcounters"
the flame vent can absolutely destroy the healthbar of most human enemies and bosses/minibosses when paired with Living Force within 1-2 uses, Shuriken is an insanely effective gap closer and deals free damage whenever the enemy leaps, sabimaru lets you afk for half the miniboss battles, umbrella lets you achieve copious ammounts of cheese, and DSPgaming first tried the final boss after googling a cheese strategy with the axe)

    >"half the skill tree is useless"

    >"dude you just spam parry until win"
the best strategy is the one where enemies constantly heal posture, you risk your posture breaking, and where fights take 10 years when you could instead just deal half the damage by attacking
