Our local game store is really nice. Always polite and friendly and will order anything you request if they don't have it in stock. They organize games on the reg for Magic, Warhammer, warhammer 40k, warmachines/hordes, and even Tabletop Roleplaying.

    Super great folks.

almost all of mine range from acceptable to great, the only shitty one that i visited once just sells pokemon, mtg and dnd miniatures
it's a big store space but it's just a bunch of scattered peg racks and boxes, looks more like a hoarder's house in organization, and the owners were just opening dozens of packs the entire time and barely giving a shit about anyone inside

I am working up to actually go to my lgs. Last time I tried to go in for boardgames night and my social anxiety shot through the roof and I had a mini existential crisis in the parking lot. I'm actaully pretty social and fun around a crowd that is mixed with friends and unknowns, but trying to elbow into a tottly alien friend group turns me into full autism mode, I start sweating to the point of a glistening forehead. I don't know where to put my hands etc etc. Might take a shot of whisky before I go in to loosen up.

Before that I went to a mtg draft and will never go again. I got btfo by some tryhard turbo autist correctly guessing my cards before I set them down. I don't know if that's normal, but I found it extremely off putting.

I dunno wtf is wrong with me. I know that since it's a lgs, there are probably 10 people inside with less social ability than me, but for some reason my head thinks being in a new social crowd is some life or death thing and I NEED to make a friend or die, when I should just chill, feel the place out and be receptive to new people. I never fricking get this, I'm always impeccable about hygiene at events (To the point of showering over lunch at one event. The curse of a Canadian in a non-arctic country.). Like, what's going through these players heads? It's not even all fat dudes, I've seen a femboy at an event do the same.

I get that it's a bit intense at times so people might sweat a bit if they're super concentrating but even casual players stink up the stores a lot of the time. Seems less common now normies have colonised the space so there's that I guess.

It is fricking wild and you can never actually tell who is going to be a rank fricker. The fat Space Marine autist could smell like shit or roses and the short angry looking girl with the tyrranid army could likewise decide showers are optional. I genuinely cannot tell who is going to be a dirty fricker unless you get close to them but you can be sure that between 40 and 60% of people at any given nerd event has not touched warm water in years.

Speaking broadly, I wish shops had more old stuff. I used to be able to pick up all kinds of books from the 80s and 90s (not just D&D, all kinds of stuff) for peanuts and there was a big box of loose pewter minis for $1 each. Now even fricking 3.X stuff is getting assrape expensive everywhere in the handful of places that have it; I paid $10 for my BoVD in 2010 or so and it's going for $170+ on ebay and my Book of Weeaboo Fightan Magic that I paid $$15 for is going for $75.

Overall not complaints with it. I know the guys well there, and the owner is a swell guy.

That being said, and I’m sure this has been repeated multiple times in this thread, but the smell. I’m sorry but game store owners need to take far more harsh stances on this. It’s not even just BO, it’s also just the mixture of food. When I’m smelling everything from Mexican to Indian food, there’s something wrong.

they bought the vape shop out next door two years ago and the MTG & 40k players and their odors are corralled out of the main part of the shop so I can go to the store on a Friday night and not have to shout to be heard (parking is still fricked but whatever)
they have a swanky gaming table for RPG games in the back. real nice, cupholders, nice wood finish. makes me want one till I see the price for them.
rpg section is lackluster with mostly 5e stuff and the rest are a potpourri of expected big games(cyberpunk, pathfinder), flavor of the month (power rangers, fallout) and CURRENT YEAR shelf fillers(thirsty sword lesbians). at least they started stocking paints that aren't citadel. 40k has an entire corner to itself standard fare and prices yawn.
GREAT SALES tho. got Mansions of Madness 2e for $65(they like to do giftwrapped mystery boxes but they told which one it was) and 75% off omnibus comics last holiday

The worst one in town went out of business about 6 months ago. It was kind of inevitable given that the owner was a washed-up sports-obsessed dudebro who was openly contemptuous of the /tg/ shit he stocked and his patrons. He originally wanted to open a sports memorabilia shop, and only begrudgingly stocked Magic and wargaming stuff when he realized the market for signed jerseys and hockey cards wasn't big enough to sustain a brick and mortar shop. He seemed pretty resentful that his shop ended up being "that LGS that happens to also sell some sports crap". It didn't help that some of the employees at the shop were pretty c**ty aspies who clearly had some social issues. Overall just a really uninviting place to shop and play, the only thing it had going for it was a good waterfront location.

The LGS I regularly visit used to have one really nasty narcissist who was essentially singlehandedly running the business into the ground: basically he had his little clique of a few other people who sucked up to him, and anyone who displeased them in any way ended up being banned for exaggerated or even made-up transgressions by this employee. The owner is this nice old guy who had stopped with the hands-on running of the store, and that's when it started. Before this, most events would regularly fill out all their tables, be it for drafts, Standard, or casual EDH night. In about a year, most events were lucky to fire because this single employee had created such a negative atmosphere in there after rapid-fire banning like 30 people.
Eventually the owner caught on and fired the guy, and reversed all the bans he had made. That was about 5 years ago now and it's only in the past few months or so that attendance has gotten back to pre-dark times numbers.

I had the displeasure of visiting one

    >store layout was essentially just a long hallway
    >store regulars were either autists that derped yugioh or anime waifu card games or degenerates of society that frankly shouldn't have been let out of prison
    >owner's pet dog allowed to roam free; layer of dog hair on everything
    >stock was woefully outdated to the point of being faded
    >boxes of unsorted cards everywhere; could basically pocket a handful whenever you wanted
    >the owner either never showed up or sat on a computer in the middle of the hallway, playing DoTA
    >when he wasn't around, the players 'ran' the store; even manned the till for themselves/others
    >remark that a store like this couldn't possibly maintain itself without being some kind of front/money laundering operation
    >other players nod and explain that owner has massive debts and is using the lgs to funnel money into an illegal nightclub

It's been years since I've even been close to an actual fist fight
Went there for less than a week and I was almost sucked into a brawl, twice

A dog on the lose in the shop? Now I know you're bullshitting. Since there were layers of dog fluff on everything, it wasn't a harmless little rat like a chihuahua, it was something like a samoyed or a golden retriever. Such big dogs are hazardous, unpredictable and they constantly need exercise, which in a tiny shop they can't get.

Moving on. Dogs need to piss and shit in the streets. They don't have a natural toilet instinct like cats. While tiny dogs like chihuahua can be taught to use the cat toilet with a lot of patience and dedication, we have already established that it's a huge, hairy dog. So apparently it was allowed to piss and shit in the middle of the store.

Moving on. Dogs can't be left unsupervised in an open space. A big dog can easily open the store's door and then it's gone forever. Unlike cats, who have insane spatial memory and can accurately return to the same spot after wandering off for miles and miles, dogs get instantly lost in new environments. It's clear that you own a cat and extrapolated your cat experiences on this imaginary dog.

      >TL;DR.

This story is a lie and I could tell because of one tiny unimportant detail that he didn't even have to include.

Went from being a really nice shop with a good selection of all sorts of tabletop games, to a dingy shithole that mostly sold used DVDs and piercings. But they had a couple of boxes of MtG cards behind the counter so in the owner’s mind that meant they were still a games shop and he didn’t have to change the advertising or branding for the store.

Everything in the store is overpriced. Including stuff that's been gathering dust for literal years.

The place smells awful. They've put in a new filtration system, replaced the carpet, and it still fricking stinks to high heaven.
And god forbid you actually want to casually buy something on a day where they're running an event. Casually stopping in on a friday or a sunday afternoon? Prepared to be treated like shit.
And then there's the people who play there. Shitheads. Want to play warhammer? They're shitheads. Want to play magic? Shitheads. Maybe you want a pick up D&D game? Now you get weird, cliquey shitheads.

Mine's pretty cool, they bought the old Disney Store spot and kept the layout. So there's a ton of room to display stuff and run events on a lot of tables.

WTF how many of you people are there, I'm in SJ too.

How would you rank the Legends stores?
          1. Oakridge
          2. Eastside
          3. Great Mall
          4. Valley Fair

You nailed it on the listing. Oakridge has the coolest stock, but Eastridge has a great wargaming section. Whenever I walk into the other two I wonder why I even bothered.

How would you anons rate the Game Kastles? Santa Clara used to be my favorite, but half of the employees are really standoffish now, the mask rules are moronic, and the shelves are pretty empty nowadays.
I've been going to the West Valley one more and more instead. Fremont is cluttered, but cool. I was in a D&D campaign at that location before the coof. I've only been to Redwood City twice, they have a nice space but I miss the ginormous Mountain View one.

My local one is run by a guy who makes consistently weird decisions; it went from the town's small shopping mall-type place to an industrial unit out the ass-end of town (he cheaped out on decent removal so loads of stock was damaged beyond sellability), changed the name to something stupid and terrible for SEO, had the audacity to try to run his game night at the same time as another long established local club and charge more for it, and in a way more cramped space.

Now he's reducing discounts, launching a not great game night annual fee thing and other weirdness, apparently he also does weed on the side which doesn't surprise me, but I suspect he'll be done by the end of the year.

What he should do to save costs is run the shop online and rent the local hall which is literally over the road from the industrial estate where he currently is for one night a week for gaming, but I doubt that's going to happen. He's a weird grumpy frick who I'm fairly sure would kill himself if he wasn't doing this so we'll see.

I once went to a bar in Netherlands that looked real hipster and shit and later i found out to my surprise that it had a long corridor connecting it to a big backroom with something like 10-15 tables and it used to hold unofficial mtg tournaments while you could go to the bard and grab a beer or snacks and come back and play. It was a real eye opener.

Had that happen at a gamestop once. My GF and i took my younger sister with us to get a birthday gift and the fatass b***h behind the counter kept waving stuff in her face telling her how cool it is and how much she wants it. We bought a giant eevee for 50 dollars and she wouldnt ring us up at first, saying “Awww how could you possibly separate them??” referring to the second giant eevee in the store. After that she went on a three minute sales pitch about gamestop memberships, and when we told her “look we’re fine, kinda in a rush” she dropped the smile instantly and didnt say a word to us for the rest of the exchange, even when we tried making small talk while she was doing her job.

I worked at GameStop for 4 1/2 years. If you don't offer the membership and push at least a few times, you get written up for it. Shortest thing to get written up over, but then again, I got written up for not having a perfect survey score. 8 months into the year, and I only had 10 surveys filled out. Because of the low sample size, I got written up. Manager told me even the regional manager thought it was bullshit. Apparently I was one of their best part timers.

A local store near me is really barren or empty most the time - with visible markups on everything (printed box MSRP being 20-40% lower than "Store" ticket prices). They offer the "We can order it in for you" thing too but whats the point in this day and age.

Clearly its the good intentions of someone who likes the idea of a gaming store but has little to no understanding of how a business actually works.

I don't expect it to last long. LGS' are razor-thin margins in the UK to begin with and relies more on a robust web-facing part of the business. In addition it's located in a central area of the city where rent must be insane; and it's reliant on foot-traffic because the nearest parking is about 30 minutes walk from it - so most it's patrons are those with skirmish, board or easy carry card games. Barring magic it's not that much of a strong market.

I know people scoff at the whole "working from home kills the high street" but it's true. Major parts of the city are empty because all the corpo's now remote in. The only things left are discount stores, the big brand shops who run as loss leaders for their area, those pseudo-pawn shops / 2nd hand stores and coffee shops.

They do try hard though - holding different nights for different systems and run a skeleton crew of 3 people; but it's clearly hard on them (days of 14+hour shifts). Most customers are broke ass teens and goth kids who smell like wet-dogs. Their "mature" people are weirdos and parasites; whilst the actual customer base they need people like me who have the money - are kept away because you can get things cheaper if you wait a day and shop online; rather than go basedjack fomo about needing to own something then and there.

Every game store needs to follow the Argos model but instead of rows of fricking catalogs and tablets, just have 1 tablet, maybe a few stands for shit like card packs, and then use the rest of the space for gaming tables.

Anyone in their right mind will just order online, or on the tablet in store and someone will go fetch it. It’s gaming spaces that people usually can’t do themselves

        >Every game store needs to follow the Argos model

        So be located in Sainsburys?

For real though what you propose isn't a half bad idea to be honest. I was surprised alot of the LGS' didn't adopt a food industry style model where you got a table and then scan a QR code, order what your want and have a staff member bring it over to your gaming table.

Several LGS I know have side hustles of Barista machines or tea and cake. I could really see people using this to up sales of boosters, cards, accessories etc.

IIRC though there's a shit load of rules around stock displaying for some products. Brick and Mortar rules are really archaic in the UK for both good and bad reasons. My ideal LGS would be two tiered - with gaming on the floor below and food and product on the second floor; but it would go bust insanely quickly because most of the main "gaming" demographics are poor anyway.

          >IIRC though there's a shit load of rules around stock displaying for some products. Brick and Mortar rules are really archaic in the UK
Maybe GW has rules about displaying their products. I think I heard from my LGS that they demand a certain amount of floor space before they send you more product or some shit.
But having worked low management in retail I can tell you I WISH there was some fricking instruction on displaying product. It’s fine in supermarkets because they’re all planned out and built for purpose, but when you work for a chain in a tiny 1930s building that was converted into a shop and the higher ups dump a load of product on you and tell you to figure it out- we’ll you get the picture

            Anonymous

Yeah I hear you, been years since I worked retail myself.

Seems it varies from place to place - WHSmith used to have a deal with pen companies like Parker that product was displayed in fancy cases at specific purchase tills. Great idea, but when you have to fit that, a post office, all the art crap and then 1000 dvd's, books and newspapers and a metric ton of sweets and drinks into what amounts to a garage it gets cosy damn quick.

I can't think of another business model that inner-city LGS could follow though; the successful ones like Zatu and Triple all basically run the "Superstore or Industrial Estate Unit" approach.

        Anonymous

The one downside is that means it's a lot harder to just browse and window shop. My LGS did this, and it means I'm a lot less likely to just wander in and pick up a cool mini from seeing it in blister. This is especially bad as their stock recording is dogshit and doesnt include half their actual stock.

You have to walk through a goddamn vape store to get to it. It's like a small room near the fire exit in the back of the shop.

It's got one small rack of 40k/WH stuff with a mish-mash of products with no organization or cohesive layout. There's a single rack on the wall with random-ass Reaper paints that have probably been there for years. There's a GW paint rack about 1/17th full. There's no signage outside other than a store decal on the vape store door. The "shop" is probably like.... 20 feet by 12 feet. Shit sucks.

Became a funko pop merch house slowly but steadily to the point they simply removed the tables to make space for more useless and moronic merch. They also started selling lots of nerd paraphernalia like key chains, stamps, clothes etc. all obviously overpriced. They removed the comics section as well. They sell some leftover rpg books and miniatures still rotting in a forgotten corner and a big pile of dnd 5e shit in the most visible spot possible. The only other real tg thing they have, is a wall for mtg and yugioh cards, sleeves, deck boxes etc..
All you ever see there nowdays are Critical Role/Dnd 5e babies and fake nerd people that know what DnD is all about because they watched Stranger things. The owner is an obnoxious piece of shit that pretends to be semi pro in magic just building overpriced meta modern decks and pretending he;s good at the game and a marvel comics fanboy. The employers are mostly e-thots, the girl gamer type that fat 20year old nerds love to drool over and a couple of old mtg fiends that live with their parents in their late 30s and work there just to get better deals on mtg cards and make some money to sink into mtg. They ve recently been getting into cedh. Stand up guys overall.
Unfortunately the more they sell out to pop fashion nerd trends the better they re doing and are planning to open a new shop in a basement somewhere downtown to contain the grognards.
There was another shop that was actually good but it got murdered by inhouse drama and serious mismanagement. W used to play board games, mtg and rpg's there at least a couple times a week for a few years. It was good while it lasted i guess.

One store is a 40 minute drive but has a pretty great owner, has a ton of 40k stuff in stock as well. Came off a bit abrasive at first but realised it was just some fun bants. Place is carpeted and has a bit of a smell to it unfortunately.
The other is only a 5 minute drive but has almost no stock and the owner kinda just stands in the corner staring at you, haven't played a game there yet so maybe the playerbase is good.

    >Biggest store has product at msrp or higher. Elitist attitude from staff and players
    >small shop that mainly deals in TCGs can't even tell you when they have an event going on and smells
    >Small shop on the south shore thats changed locations and is now mostly tables. A shell of itself.

I go to a local board game cafe for commander nights and I dont care what anyone says, it's worth the 15$ to sit down and play and get a free booster packs. The place is nice and the people are friendly. The other shops aren't worth visiting imo. Too many spergs and stinkers. Staff is moronic.

I have three stories about two different shops.

First one was when I got dragged to a MTG night by some friends to hang out. I have been out of the game for years at this point and brought some of my old, mostly white border, decks to play against friends after everything was said and done. One of my friends drew two foil really rare planeswalkers or something that was some new golem one. It looked like one of my older cards I used and I asked if we could trade after the game was done. A huge hamplanet came up and went off on a tirade about how trades are banned before the game night thing. I said that is why I wanted to trade after. He proceeded to look at the cards I pulled and said the were all shit and worthless compared to the golem planeswalker, that was the truth to be honest but I had no idea at the time, and thought I wanted to scam my friend. The store owner took him to the side to talk to him because I guess he scares off customers a lot. During the competition I scrambled out a pretty bad deck since I have no knowledge about the meta, and got some advice. One other dude jumped in to say why am I even here if I am not trying to win or know the current meta when I asked questions about why a certain card was good with the dude trying to give me advice.

Later on I asked my friend again if he wanted to trade later when it was slow, but he decided to sell it since the cards were worth a couple hundred each so I stepped back and said that's great you can get that much for them nowadays. The hamplanet from the first incident came up and started yelling over it and kept asking if I am slow to every friend with me, then tried to get me thrown out when I called him a fat douche which led to the owner having to get involved again to tell him to knock it off. He later saw me using my older decks against friends, went up to look at my cards without asking, said all of these old ones are worthless if I wanted to know, and bent one to test the authenticity.

The second shop is the shop my friends and I still go to and is generally good, but there were two stories that stand out. The store bought out of a franchise and changed their name recently because of some controversy or something. One of my friends asked why they did the name change after he hadn't been there in a while. The managed said something about wanting to buy out of the franchise for a while and how some customers kept trying to start something or ruin game nights over the old name. Then another employee and some other customer jump in to bring up how my friend was some sea lion or concern troll trying to start up something in the store again and how could the manager say concerned people were just starting something out of nowhere. They also called us old fricks who need to get with the times since we are in our mid to late 30s and have no idea what the frick is going on at this point with internet drama. The manager of that store, who hangs out with us occasionally and we know on a first name basis, threatened to kick them out if they start something again over a question. It is still awkward when they get passive aggressive over the smallest things but most of the people there are cool.

The thirst story is when of one dude in our friend group becoming a huge that guy after the 2016 election and lost his girlfriend. He tried to start fights with everyone over the most minor things that offended him. I'll stick to the game shop story unless people want to hear more about him. Lets call this guy josh and the two friends he tried to start shit with nick and tom. Nick is and was dating a black girl, and josh thought that it was awful that a boring white guy was dating a black girl who he thought was out of his league. Josh was also mad that tom was dating a mexican girl as a white guy, but tom is mexican himself. This was apparently colonization and people dating above what they should have. Josh is also a white guy.

Josh found the social media accounts of the two girlfriends and started to dm them about how they should leave nick and tom for him. He tried posting body shots and dick picks but got blocked. The next time Josh tried to show up for game night, Nick, the borther of nick's girlfriend, and Tom were waiting and almost started a fist fight with him while he tried to lecture them about he is a better fit for them as he is not a completely boring white guy like them since josh was part nordic and native american. This was the breaking point when everyone was done with his shit and told him to leave.

Later on, he tried telling the local game store he slept with nick and tom's girlfriends and spread a lot of bullshit about everyone there since he got made over the whole thing. When all of us went into the store, someone there wanted to talk to nick and tom privately to break the news. Josh was still in the store and another fight almost broke out with nick and tom's girlfriends threatened to file restraining orders if he doesn't stop trying to start shit with everyone. Josh ended up getting banned from the store when he went on a tangent about boring white people, colonization, and morons/bawds who don't know better.

I have quite a few stories about this one guy alone if anyone wants to hear them. I am surprised we put up with his shit for so long. It was weird too since he tried to be really progressive 24/7 only to say awful, borderline racist shit if things didn't go his way. Then he would flip back into lecturing people on how to act. He also expected everyone to accept his "banter" and insults but crumpled and got mad over minor banter thrown back.

In lighter stuff, I guess the one big complaint I have is that every single game store near me only sells dnd shit, and pathfinder once in a blue moon, for any TRPG product. I really want to see some smaller stuff get represented.

I have a few. I will say in advance that is seems like Josh got a way with a lot, he did. He used to be a cool guy who helped a couple friends out during some medical/financial issues but just became too much of a dick over time.

The stories are the time he tried to dm, his board game rages, his race obsession creeping into games, the time he was truly euphoric, some more thirst stories, and his constant attempts to min max resulting in arguments. There's more stuff behind the scenes, but these are the /tg/ ones I remember.

The board game story involves the game night josh hosted. Josh refused to play anything else besides stuff he owned, and hoe only owned dominion and risk. Eventually Nick, from the previous story, managed to convince everyone to try out an old game he owned where you played chaos gods from warhammer fantasy. Nick tried teaching everyone how to play there faction, but josh didn't believe the advice and then lost. The game was immediately trash and not allowed to be brought back. Josh also got food on it despite never allowing food near his stuff but justified it by saying the game was trash anyway. Come a few weeks later we play risk, and Josh starts yelling at nick about how much of a scumbag he is for switching sides during some risk game. Nick thought it was a joke, but josh was serious and kept going until an argument broke out when he said he was glad he got food on some shitty rare, old board game.

The thirst story involves the two times he did a 180 about what he likes because he wanted to get with some girl. Nick wanted to try dming some game set in the project moon universe, Lobotomy corp and library of ruina, just for something different. Cue Josh getting angry over weeb shit and b***hing about it up until some female coworker of a friend wanted to join out of interest in those games. Josh then loved it until it got awkward when it got revealed he knew jack shit about it.

He was a childhood friend of some of the people there, and like I said, he also helped out a couple dudes with a place to crash and doing some stuff for them when one had serious medical and financial issues. He used to be a great guy. People wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt since josh lost his girlfriend and some family died.

The second thirst story was a bit before the big fight between josh, nick, and tom. Josh kept trying to poison the well by making nick and tom look bad in front of their girlfriends. He would keep bringing up tom being a former cop which shows how awful he is, he would keep bringing up nick having a ton of anime/game/sci-fi collectibles and would try to talk about how pathetic it is to nick's girlfriend but got shut down quick with his funko collection getting brought up. He even tried to talk to nick's girlfriend about how bad he felt for her for dating a near incel and expressed "concern" over the offense his nickname for her, hot cocoa, could cause. Josh got told to shut up for the most part when people realized he wasn't joking, but people didn't realize how far it would go. Josh also tried the incel thing again when he realized nick owned guns and tried to talk about how concerned he was. A fight almost broke out there when nick said he would have to be b***hless like him to be an incel. After that, cue the original stuff that happened at the game store.

The euphoric story is when another friend from the group lost a dog due to some spinal issue and loss of motor control. He still tried to dm a game but kind of petered out when there was a character who had a pet dog in it he forgot about. He said something along the line he hopes his dog is in a better place where it can run again and be free. Josh said that the dog is just rotting in the ground and he needs to accept that and to stop belieivng in childish religion shit. This started a huge fight where Josh said it was uncalled for when the owner of the dog said he bets his dead uncle is dissapointed in him because josh would never demean former family members.
                2/4

The min-max story is also partly because josh thinks that DND5e is the best system ever made. He says he would be down for anyhting, but quickly would start trying to make comparisons about why the current system was bad for not being like 5e. He tried to min max a character in forbidden lands by making a mounted knight guy, but got mad if any enemy brought ways to counter him being on a mount. He would freak out over losing stats when you take damage. He would try to min max in pathfinder with only ac but get furious if someone forced save checks. Any game, he would get mad if his min-max plans ddidn't work.

Josh eventually did get a chance to dm 5e to show us how good it was. However it was his first time dming and josh refused to take any advice given even after asking for advice. Nick is our mostly forever dm and wanted to try playing a monk for once since he never really played one before. Josh wanted to do an "epic" and serious nordic themed campaign. Josh was mad it would clash with the setting, so nick asked if he could just make it like a wildman berserker thing and reflavor it, but josh refused since that is not rules as written. So cue him finding any way to screw over an unarmed character for any unarmed hit done. He railroaded if anyone did anything out out of line, made spells not work if they revealed traps or ruined his puzzle, he got mad at no one buying anything in his low gold setting, got mad when no one wanted to split up the party to make money, and kept taking rewards to hype a villain over and over again so no one had motivation to look for gear.

There's gotta be at least one new York or close to new York anon in here.

Anytime I take a trip into the city I hit up compleat strategist. Place feels like a used bookstore with how cramped everything in there is but their selection is generally great for board games. They have a big RPG section but I don't really look through it myself so I can't vouch for it.

Workers are hit and miss, the younger guys are friendly but there are a couple older guys who I think have maybe been doing it a bit too long, can be kinda gruff, but I've gotten them talking once or twice and they can be friendly. It's cramped, and disorganized as frick, but I honestly kind of like it, makes it fun for me to search through the shelves for hidden gems, which has happened on several occasions. Last time I was in I swiped a mystic vale expansion that's been out of print for a while which was the only one I needed to complete my set, tucked away on a random shelf.

Played some frostgrave there once in the basement a long while back, decent space, but it was just the one time so I can't really say how good it is overall for tables. Overall fantastic store for the selection alone, but it isn't super local so I couldn't say how good it is if it's the store you play games at all the time.

    >asks for msrp on GW products in a town where there is a GW and also a store that has a 15% loyalty discount but just expect you to buy shit there to "support the lgs"
    >"sent back" most of their older GW stock that people were actually interested in since it was hard to find so even LESS reason to buy GW from them
    >Have to ask employees to search through their binders for magic singles
    >never have any relevant staples
    >employees act pissed off and annoyed whenever you ask them to search for singles to the point I just ask to see the binder I think they're in and grab them myself
    >have a used mini cabinet where they sell built/badly painted minis for 15% off msrp
    >decide to schedule pioneer days on SUNDAYS and then get surprised when only 2-5 people show up

Their only saving grace is that they carry any fricking board game you could think of, AK and other cool products that no one else in the town carries so I go there for neat paints but support the other LGS for most warhammer stuff.

My city has two LGS and everyone wants one to fricking go under.
    >Overly clean in that doctor's office/car dealership kind of way, feels like if you spilled something it'd be an affront to God
    >Literally only stocks D&D5e, FotM board games, TCG stuff and Warhammer 40k, that's it.
    >Specifically moved to be a block down from the other LGS cause they wanted to take customers
    >Told the Extra Life board game/rpg group in the city to frick off and couldn't host events there cause it wasn't 'helping the store's brand' enough.
    >The LGS then hosted their own separate game nights on the same dates to try and take customers.
    >You will get banned from ordering decks if you mention buying cards cheaper online.

    By comparison the other LGS
    >Feels like chilling in your friend's basement/game room
    >Had an attached sandwich shop that made baked goods and pizzas before they had to move location (turned out the basement had black mold and the landlord didn't want to do shit)
    >Stock pretty much everything, even old vidya

yes it would but the issue is that most LGS owners are clueless on business and are manchildren that fell for the "turn your hobby into a business" meme

      >store has no discounts
I have yet to find a store in my whole fricking state that does discounts.
One store has a loyalty system, where you get 10% store credit for everything you buy, which is decent, but if it's not 15% why am I bothering? Most of my purchases I get on ebay for that reason.
At a different store, I tried to ask if they did discounts. He waffles about, "oh, we can... sometimes, I try to do like... 10% on 100 dollars or more... we can only advertise a discount of so much..." ok, cool, I wanted two troops boxes anyway. I walk away to grab the boxes, come back to get rung up and he rings it up at full price.
I'm not quite poor enough to argue with some jackass about 10 dollars, but I guess I just won't go back there.
I don't understand these homosexuals. You've got all this fricking product eating shelf space, why the frick don't you want it to move? The store that does the 10% loyalty has kits that I know have been sitting there since 2015. They've still got the shit Eldar vs Dark Mech box. They've still got Pariah Nexus and a bunch of other old kill team shit that's not going to move. Offer a fricking discount, you fricks, I KNOW you idiots get it at 45% from GW. Why are you buying 10 of fricking everything for it to rot on your fricking shelves?

They hold good swap meets, though. Got me a Eldar Vyper for like 10 bucks, NOS.

Not a game store specifically but a hobby store near me

    When I found the place:
    >40k is very small in this store
    >maybe a single 4ft section for models, another 4ft section for books + magazine stuff
    >mostly just new releases, some random stuff
    >owner is a nice guy, offers to special order anything so long as you don't mind waiting GW shipping times
    >30% discount on all 40k

    As of last month:
    >40k dominates half of the front of half of the store
    >All new releases, huge selection of models
    >More of a selection than the actual GW store nearby
    >Haven't seen the owner since, just younger employees
    >All 40k is MSRP.

I've never been so disappointed by a shop. At least they have some fun models in the display case.

A certain LGS in central North Carolina is pretty cool, opened up recently. The staff is cool. I kind of had a night where I wasn’t thinking right and I sold most of my collection and the owner told me that he would hold on to it for seven days before putting it in his system and I came back a few days later and got them back for what I bought them for. My favorite LGS.
I was stationed in Fort Campbell for a little bit and Frontline Games seemed to overcharge the shit out of their product. I tried to sell some cards and they offered to buy them for very cheap. Not my favorite LGS.

The two big ones around are great locally owned stores with good comunities from what Ive seen. The only bad experience I've had was going to one we didn't know and just stopped into. There was some kind of MtG shit going on and the store layout was foreboding. There was this little section of the store crammed up by the door with all the 40k, D&D stuff, and all the board games in two aisles about 10x15. The whole middle of the store was long rows of tables for the Magic players, and the rest was MtG and Funco Pops. I went up to the counter to buy some D&D plushies for my wife, and I stood there until eventually asking one of the Magic grogs if anybody actually worked there. The employee was playing and facing my direction. He just didn't want money I guess. I seriously considered just walking out with the plushies.

My olny real complaint about the local game store is the lack of variety. They only really stock the most recent d&d, magic, and warhammer releases. They say they'll order other games, but it's a crapshoot whether or not they'll actually do it.

Their interior is an absolute fricking clusterfrick of a mess; delivery boxes everywhere, no room to even move between isles, not enough wallspace to have minis in blisters on display, a crapton of crappy boardgames swallow up every last bit of shelfspace, stacks of boardgames in front of said shelves, so you can't even approach the fricking shelves, kinda kills the idea eh?
The last two times I went there to get a nice third party mini as a gift I couldn't even browse minis, a huge amount of minis in blisters cramped in a box, how am I supposed to even look at them, I left sad and without buying anything.

I live in a city where there are plenty of games shops, but almost all of them are soulless chains. I've been going to one shop for almost 20 years and have followed them around the city at various locations. It's a really bad show all around, on multiple levels but I still get a small sense of satisfaction for supporting a genuine local business.
    >open the door of mine and youre instantly hit with odd wet-dog musk
    >massive area filled with what used to be the entire range of Reaper miniatures, now is about about a third of the original quantity with dozens upon dozens of empty hooks where new stock should be good. none of it is organised in anyway so if you're looking for a specific figure you better have half an hour to spare/if you ask the owner he just shrugs and says "I think we had one at one point"
    >owner is a weird autistic guy who has to get his wife or step-daughter to remove everybody from the shop for 15 minute intervals every so often because of his social anxiety/sensory overload. he will go and hide in the backroom for hours on end at times during which some random friend or family member will come and man the til
    >single cards restocked using a single booster box from a set so all the popular cards are gone within a day of coming out and the owner won't ever replace them
    >the mark up on the single cards is outrageous, even for a LGS with the prices being usually double what the average price is online
    >people who don't know the guy sometimes attempt to haggle with him; when he's put on the spot about his high prices he will become angry saying how he barely makes ends meet and then will go out the back for another extended period
    >the guy that runs the Organised /Adventurers League for Dungeons and Dragons is an old grog friend of the owner who is a total pushover Game master and will indulge morons in "I roll to seduce the dragon" type shit so the games run at the shop are really really shitty
I really could go on here. Apologies for the giant post

It was in 2016 I think. Before finding friends to play d&d with, I went to the LGS because they had a basement with many big tabels for groups to play at and the manager behind the counter told me I could just come in on Wednesdays and Fridays to check out if a group wanted another player.
Found a group playing pathfinder which wasn't hard to adapt to (I only read the 5e phb at that time). They welcomed me and gave me a premade character of an absentee so I could learn the ropes.
And that's where the positives end.
GM was a 40+ unemployed wierdo playing with somehow even wierder teenagers (13-17). In hindsight I get hard grooming vibes.
The older teen's char had two naked elven slaves on chains on him at all times and the GM was a total pushover, letting the players change the scene and rules at any time of they wanted to have a cool moment for their character.
It essentially was a sandbox campaign where a bunch of antisocial teenagers could release all their angst and cooming fantasies, directed by a failed existence if a boomer.
I endured it for half an hour, then excused myself to leave early and never returned.

If this is how people are willing to play in a public space without shame, I don't wanna know what losers who post anime images on /tg/ play on their discord servers.

I'm glad shit like CR and stranger things popularized the hobby among normies so I can play with mentally sane people with a stable career and knowledge about basic hygiene and decency. In 2017 I convinced people from my office to play a oneshot I DMed for them because they voiced curiosity for TTRPGS and we've been playing weekly since then.

I loved playing with Marines. They usually showed up on time and (relatively) sober, even if they brought a dip spit bottle and a concealed carry weapon. Ours was 10/10 for the longest time until the old owner got cancer and passed the store to his nephew. Now the store's shut down.

The old owner cared a lot about tabletop gaming and providing a cool hangout spot. One time he was quoted in the local newspaper as "providing a venue where anyone could come and enjoy themselves and be comfortable." He always seemed to have fair prices, had pleasant staff, and the store was divided into comfy areas based on what you were interested in doing that afternoon. Most stores would charge you to rent a table or play video games, but he didn't so long as you were buying snacks or a booster pack or something.

The new owner was his nephew, a nasty normie who literally doesn't know anything about gaming or comics, he just saw it as an opportunity to make money by selling cardboard and have a job where he could slack off all day. He eventually had some trouble for selling alcohol without any sort of license and also being really gross around minors. Every single female that walked into his store he'd make comments about and if you pointed out they were underage he'd make some comment like, "Even better. We can talk now and meet up when she turns eighteen." The last straw was when he basically threw half the store's content away and filled the shelves with funko pop shit and novelty Big Bang Theory-tier shit. Now the store is a memory.

I couldn't count the number of game shops in the city... all just card games with funko-shit, all in malls full of bad smell, only a couple with board games or wargames, of which only one has good assortment (by request) and they usually play... plastic furniture full of painted GW miniatures, all full of dust, no cabinets with glass... only cheap furniture, dust on dust, almost no product in sight, game tables with bad scenery (with dust) and cheap plastic benches practically everywhere, the good thing are the prices and the accessibility of being able to take away your own printed pieces, as long as you eat a snack and one time per year buy something big... the bad thing, I need to spend 2 hours traveling to that store, besides that the activity of the place is nocturnal according to what I know...
The worst store was one that started with board games, huge events in the city with local geeky restaurants and cafes, even sponsoring Roleplay and board game events... free tables for play and good snacks
    >one of the majority partners, bought and/or stole the part of other partners, taking over the business completely
    >leaving the golden age of events and free tables in the store
    >they opted for GW, soon after it became an exclusive place
    >¨anon if you do not buy a minimum purchase you cannot play at our tables¨
    >the minimum was $20 a month, and later more and more money
    >They were severely whipped by the local GW community, since they treated them worse than trash...
    >The gw clubs boycotted the place and ironically the covid started...
    >soon after they ended up selling anime figures and gunpla by catalog over the internet

There are two hobby shops that I know of in Malmö. Both venues are clean and staff are decent.

    Sci-Fi Bokhandeln
Mainly sells books, nerdshit, DnD, a small corner is dedicated to Warhammer with some third party hobby craft items, and board games.
I buy paints and hobby items now and then. They offer a 5kr discount, not even 50 American cent, on Warhammer stuff. Staff is alright, helpful but a bit unsocial even for Swedes.

    Playoteket
Lots of board games, much more miniature wargaming stuff and card games as well. Not sure about discounts, only ever bought some paint from them. Staff is nerdy and helpful, but a bit unsocial. The store has some tables for games.

I'd rather have a shitty LGS than none, actually.

I live in ~105k pop post-industrial city in central Europe. We have no real university, but two (decent, though) colleges, so student life is pretty limited - young people tend to escape to bigger cities with unis all over the country. Only people you can actually play with are from group of friend (which actually seems to tear in seams more and more), and even then you can really get 2-3 people REALLY engaged in the game, with others showing up occassionally or taking it all half-assed.

Adding insult to injury, we are already 30+ and it is EXTREMELY difficult to pull new people into the hobby without getting weird looks or comments - RPGs ain't really popular (or even known about) outside universities.

Sheesh, I just wish to be able to stay in the hobby even with me and friends starting families and going about with our lives normally.

I live in a city with 32k people and there's multiple game shops here. Granted they all suck, but they're here. How can so many people be in one place, but not have made a niche out of games?

My city has 80k people. The only thing resembling a LGS only cares about MTG, and has just a handful of light board games and Warhammer boxes to pretend they're anything else than a den of card-crack addicted landwhales. It's also about the size of a small cafe.
Having a large population doesn't mean much when most of that population is old farts and drones.

Well I can only guess that it boils down to low popularity of /tg/, although board games are slowly appearing in cafes and similar venues.

It was excellent. In over ten years of going there, barely any negative memories. Due to the location, the players were mostly doctors and medical students. Not a sweaty grog in sight.

Then last year the war happened, half the customer base fled the country, the rent skyrocketed and the store rapidly closed. Not only is the next closest one farther away from my home, it's on the third floor of an apartment block, and you have to call the owners to be allowed inside. Not that it helps, as during my one and only visit it was filled with zoomoids from the local school and sweaty grogs who actually smell for real.

Local game store doesnt properly hand out promos for Magic, says theyre holding out to promote the store....

The shop I went to during my university years would do that. They'd hold the majority of their promo cards, only giving them out to the first and second, sometimes third placed player. Then they'd re-sell them a year later for a ridiculous mark-up.

Our local owner is very two faced, so our town has a music venue that’s rented out by a bunch of great guys, you pay if you play and they get a discount because they do maintenance on the venue.

Now a member of the clubs opens his store in the same town, in a pretty run down area (there have been drug deals going on every time I’ve gone to the store). Alls well though it’s cheap enough and replaces the old shop we lost

Then he starts not showing up on Tuesdays (club nights) and starts conveniently hosting his own store nights on a Tuesday but doing them for free. He then starts rearranging his employees shifts since a few of them went to the first club so they fall on a Tuesday so they can’t go anymore.
Everyone can tell he’s trying to leech people off but no one says anything since he’s the only store in town now

Oh and can’t have a conversation with him without him trying to sell you shit very hard seller type

There's no game store in my town, but the local game café is run by the most annoying frick ever.
He's not an butthole, he's actually trying to be nice. But he never says anything clever or funny and yet, that's where my friends gather to play. In the café run by this boring, dim frick. I keep hoping he goes out of business or my friends realize we're better off playing anywhere else.

You're obviously the actual butthole and I hope your friends realise they're better off playing without YOU.

Nah, I know what he's on about. There's people who tell a flop joke every five minutes, the entire time you're with them. You can't even pretend to laugh politely or anything after long enough, it's just grating.

The store two towns over that sells Army Painter paints beside Citadel paints posted this today:

    > A little bit of an awkward post here, but hopefully everyone understands why I'm posting it.

    >A polite reminder to everyone for game nights. The store is a small environment and everyone is pretty close together in an enclosed space. So I politely ask you to consider others when in, and if you can, use some deodorant or similar products before coming in. We also keep some sprays in the bathroom that people are free to use if needed. No one likes sitting in a store that stinks. It's been very bad lately.

    >We've also had someone, who is coming in on Fridays. Either cutting, or biting off their nails and leaving them all over the floor. It's pretty disgusting, and I'm fed up of us having to clean them up. We found enough under one of the downstairs tables to probably be from both hands and all fingers.

They just sell pokemon plushes and cards and shit as well as a ridiculously large amount of warhammer stock, but it's all too expensive because warhammer. it's always awkwardly quiet and silent and sometimes random spergs are in there painting while the owner sits around. i've never actually played any /tg/s I just like painting figs but it sounds like a horror story to go. there's like 4 ultramarine players out of the 8 regulars.

Oh shit and I forgot to mention
      >the games they were playing
      >Horus Heresy, Bolt Action, Star Trek: Attack Wing, Kill Team and some MTG
they sell paints and terrain stuff though so it makes them convenient. they're the only store within an hour radius but they don't do the "buy 9 paints, get 1 extra free!" that GW stores do around here.

my shitty lgs had their employees beat the shit out of me for getting my fingerprints on a display case, then they stole my clothes and made me walk naked to my car where they followed me home and then gangraped my mother and sister. they then made me thank them for the experience and write a good google maps review at gunpoint. then one of them shot my dog and forced me to make stock from his bones. He had a knife to my neck the entire three hours the dog stock was simmering and then forced me to add salt and pepper to taste. I was still naked by the way, and they then made my family drink the entire stock pot of dog soup. they then left, telling me on the way out that i got off easy before stabbing me in the groin and leaving me bleeding out on my living room floor. the next day they came back and burned my home down.

No, the burn wounds I received compounded with my dick stabbing are fatal, i am slowly dying in a hospital bed right now. I am dictating my words to be posted in this thread by a close family member. In order to do this, he and i developed a language consisting of patterns created by my twitches and gasps of pain.

It was a dingy basement and the shitter was right next to some of the tables and one of those fat nerds always had to shit. Staff was alright I guess. They got bought out at some point and I haven't been there since.

Mine is actually good, the owner used to work for the old LGS in the area but that closed down after the owner got fed up with the community when $15k worth of goods were stolen and we lost a good LGS for a bit. Real big shame too cause if you got yourself a membership ($100/year) you would get 25-30% off of almost everything in the store. Now I think the one that replaced the old LGS is only 20-25% off but they had an end of the year sale which I got shit for 35% off so I was happy.
Only downside is the owner is an ultra leftist who got really upset with me year's ago when I had a pepe phone background saying "you know that's a racist symbol I l tight?", you're also not allowed to conceal carry in the store but I guess that one is for the best since autists would try and kill each other for stupid shit, oh and you have to show proof of vaccinations if you want to enter the store without a mask.
But again besides those personal complaints the store is fantastic lots of open space, staff is friendly, quite a number of gaming tables with great terrain, as well as stocking non-GW stuff which is even better

    >freeplay for non event players

    >Gamestore A is nothing but MTG and MTG accessories. Owner is a nice dude though and pointed me to where I could find TTRGPs and 40k
    >Gamestore B is a 20 minute drive. Enormous playspace. Mostly MTG again but 40k and AoS gays meet up twice a week
    >Gamestore C is a 40 minute drive. Kcould be cozy except both floors of the store are packed. Play space is reserved about 2-3 weeks in advance and highly sought after. No card games at all allowed. No clue how it stays in business.

Its right next to a laundromat that seems to breed anger. I don't know if it was cursed or they play some MK Ultra shit over the speakers but every time I go to the LGS there's a fight happening in the parking lot, one time we had to lock the doors because someone fired off a couple rounds. I don't even live in that dangerous of a city, maybe the neighborhood was better when they opened but its a pretty shit place now.

It’s not so much a shitty local store issue, but the old store I went to was nestled close to a petstore & hardware store and was there for a decade or more. I’d go there frequently after two closer local stores to me went out of business. The owner was a nice guy and had tons of miniatures and old RPG books that there collecting dust, there were multiple tables that facilitated the vast amounts of people being there from Battletech, WHFB/40k/AoS, Star Wars, MtG, etc. As usual, covid happened and the store took a hit but after covid it wasn’t as bad, not as many people as before however. The original owner of the store sadly passed away and the ownership went to his friend who was apparently a manager of some kind for FLGS but then he sold the store/product to Coliseum of Comics and it’s been empty ever since. I at least got some good stuff from that store like an original copy of a Rogue Trader book for around 70 dollars.
