Conveniently ignoring the part where the barrel responds to being jumped on, as well as that no other object in the game up to that point responds to d-pad inputs.

And you can actually just BARELY clip past it if you get the barrel as low as possible with jumping, and then jump at JUST the right moment when it goes down. I did it one time as a youngster, but unfortunately ran out of time before I could finish the level.

pressing up and down doesn't make any sense. also the barrel doesn't react to pressing down beyond a certain point, you would have to randomly press up while already in the middle of the animation that plays after pressing down, even though it doesn't make sense. what action is the player character performing after pressing up? why does it lift the barrel up? it's completely arbitrary.

it barely moves if you just press down or up and leave it at that, while a jump has a greater effect and causes it to bounce more
you have to press up and down rythmically in a way that makes no intuitive sense

The game has dedicated look up and look down actions that you have been trained to use when you don't know what to do.

      You are actually moronic.

      no it doesn't
pressing up or down should make your character perform an action. what action is it performing by pressing up or down while on the barrel?

Pressing down on slopes makes you roll, so it is associated with movement.

The problem is that there's a trampoline mechanic on that same level that responds inversely to how you jump on it.
There's inflatable platforms on in that also work by jumping on them.

No, you are actually a moron if you didn't struggle with this.

The feedback given by the game should tell you that timing jumps is the way to get past it, especially seeing as it's possible to get past it that way.

No one figured out to press up and down by themselves, inputs that never have any interactive effects anywhere else in any Sonic game. Unless they are moronic and not applying any logical reasoning to the problem at hand, instead solving it accidentally by mashing buttons.

My first time through the classic trilogy as a kid was Mega Collection, and I seldom made it past the second zone of each game. By the time I could actually get further into Sonic 3, I was already spoiled on how to get past the barrel through a Sonic Shorts skit.

    No one cares Black person
    Devs apologized.
The barrels moves with physics aka how classic Sonic is only supposed to be fricking played, meaning if you didn't jump on them you are modern troon and is the main reason for the current state of the series
And the worst part of this shitposting shit is no one naturally presses up and down in a rhythmic fashion, you'd naturally jump on the fricking object that absorbs your momentum when you fricking land on it.

Also, Naka lost, so cope. Just admit this is bad game design.

it took me 13 years to figure out the real solution to this, and then I only found out accidentally because I was playing in an emulator and a friend leaned on the keyboard accidentally and pressed down on player 2 controls
as a kid I thought you were supposed to use the bubble shield to bounce really fast until you could squeeze out between a gap in the wall and barrel.

The issue with the barrel of doom is that is doesn't immediately react to you pressing up/down. You need to press up/down a few times before it becomes noticeable that it's reacting to those inputs. This delay in reaction from the barrel makes it seem like pressing on the d-pad does nothing, thus the player gives up on the d-pad approach before the barrel properly reacts. This is what filtered so many, including me. The Barrel Of Doom is the posterchild of bad game design.

Was there an equivalent of Nintendo Power for Sega games so I could solve the riddle of the sphinx that was this barrel puzzle?

  25. 1 year ago
    Anonymous

    >too stupid to realize that people DID try their dpads and that even that doesn't produce immediately noticeable results
Using the dpad takes a few seconds of use - that use having to specifically be sustained and properly timed alternating between pressing up and down - before you notice that the barrel is moving in response to it, because it will have already been moving from when you jumped on it, so at first you don't notice because you think it's moving due to the jumping and don't realize the dpad is having any effect at all. And of course there's no way to avoid this because the barrel has to already be moving for the dpad to have any effect at all, as trying to do it while the barrel is at a standstill literally has no effect and will not cause the barrel to start moving ever, no matter how long you do it.

All of this is of course apart from the fact that the game has you encounter these barrels earlier in the level, where jumping on them not only DOES produce immediate positive results, but in fact allows you to progress past them, meaning that the game actually teaches you the wrong solution before you get to this part.

In short, if you look down your nose at people who had trouble with the barrel, then you never played Sonic 3 until you already learned the solution beforehand and are a literal moron.
