I just cleared Ys X and I'm thinking of going back to check out the ones I haven't played yet.
What's the best way to play Ys 1 and 2?
Is the SNES or PS2 version of 5 better?
How different is the recent Switch release of Felghana from the PC version?
Also let's just have an Ys thread
>Ys 1 and 2
No real reason not to get Chronicles+, but honestly pretty much any version aside from the DS one should be fine.
>5
SNES version has been translated, PS2 has not, as far as I'm aware. Neither one plays all that well, so I'd say just go with SNES.
>recent Switch release of Felghana
- All 2D character portraits have been redrawn in a new art style referred to as the "Refine version", but the original portraits are still available as an option.
- New art is unlocked for Elena by beating the Time Attack in each difficulty.
- Visuals such as textures and character illustrations are now presented in a higher quality, in addition to the game running at 60 FPS.
- Adol is now voiced during gameplay.
If narration is turned off in the sound options, Adol will talk in place of the narrator during cutscenes. However, he only speaks a few words at most.
- A "high-speed mode" has been added, which increases the speed of the game to 1.5x or 2x if a button is pressed.
- Cutscenes can be skipped
- No localization yet, no fan patches either afaik although I think someone was working on bringing over the PSP text.

Is there any difference between Chronicles and Chronicles +?
Also is the PC Engine version of Ys 1 and 2 worth checking out?
There's a mod to put in their OST into Chronicles, it's best to do that.
Chronicles+ is just a PC port of Chronicles, basically. It has higher resolution and a couple more options for the interface.
>PC Engine version of Ys 1 and 2
I mean, you can check it out, it's not BAD by any means, but imo the Chronicles version ultimately is just better.
Like other anon, Chron + is just all the stuff in Chron without the limitations
It's the best way to play it, chose music to your taste, but definitely use the 'old' art because it's literally the definition of sovl vs souless
just imagine ALTTP combat where you instead of pressing buttons to attack (or stop pressing buttons to block with your shield) you just move in closer. Head on = bad, from angles/other sides = good
>- No localization yet, no fan patches either afaik although I think someone was working on bringing over the PSP text.
Apparently someone already did, check out the falcom general on /vg/. Haven't tested it though.
More party Ys, really. Combat is different with the addition of the duo mode, but still the same at its core and very guard-centric.
Story takes long to get going, but the pacing between gameplay and story is certainly better than IX.
Exploration is ultimately linear because the new major areas are story-gated, but there are always side areas to explore for treasure, quests and rescuing villagers, just like in VIII.
Some neat movement tools, not as powerful as in IX.
You mileage may vary on the ship in terms of combat and traversal, as well as the story. The soundtrack didn't blow me away, you can check it out yourself in YT.
How is ys x anyway?
It was okay, I guess? The new stuff they added is fun but the setting and story aren't as interesting as 8 and 9 and the graphics are somehow worse than before.
Saw this review posted on Ganker before and I agree with most of it, only thing I disagree with is the stuff about the world map which I thought sucked.

i miss bump combat
*bumps thread*
Still can't believe that X actually sets up 63 year old Adol in a game
That always felt like a bit of background fluff to make the world feel bigger, not something that they'd actually do
Yes, you should go back.
Oh great an Ys thread, just beat Origin for the first time
>played through all three campaigns
>everyone is talking about how the ending of character 3 ties into Ys I
>expect one of the Fact brothers to become evil
>this doesn't happen, still don't know who the fuck Dark Fact is
Anyways great game and great series. Finished I&II, Felghana, Napishtim and Origin so far. Should I play Seven next?
>he didn't play 5
I'll get to it, playing the modern ones now. Still haven't started 7 because the party system really puts me off man
It's actually easy as shit, takes like 10 minutes to get used to and then the games turn into a cakewalk if you are playing on normal (aside from the final bosses of both, they are challenging). They were considered babby RPGs for a reason when they came out, literally any 2D Zelda game is harder. I'd say give them another go, they are still very fun and satisfying to play
>the party system really puts me off man
7 is the absolute worst of them because if you don't have the right element some enemies straight up take 0 damage or all your attacks miss.
Damn it's going to be a slog after the Napishtim engine games, isn't it?
It has Napishtim grinding too where if you didn't kill enough enemies (and by "enough" they mean "three laps around the area") you do single digit damage to bosses that will kill you in two hits
7 is pretty bad
Honestly grinding in Napishtim is fun because the combat itself is very satisfying. I genuinely liked manually backtracking instead of teleporting because it was an excuse to destroy more monsters. Even in Origin where you basically had to beat the entire game 3 times I didn't really feel bored. What puts me off is having to switch between characters in 7. I sure as fuck hope your party members get experience and level up with you like in normal JRPGs
I tried to play 1&2 and I didn't get the bump combat, can someone explain to me how it works?
