I also really like Blue Reflection: Second Light but I don't think that the sequel was trying to appeal to normies, it's still a game with only Japanese voices and doesn't offer an English dub (unlike other Japanese games some which are mainstream and very popular), a game where all the playable characters are only female characters and a game with some fan service mostly because the game lets you put most girls in those one piece swimsuits if you so desire.
I agree that it's not the best sequel if we go with the things that are shown and what not in the first game (including those beautiful transformation sequences which are shorter and less glorious in the sequel), but it's still a game with limited appeal compared to other anime style games.

Yuki and Rena are in love with each other, that's something explicit and canon, but similar to Nights of Azure more or less, the relationship and love between those two girls doesn't go beyond them holding hands and Yuki using Rena's lap as a pillow. We never see a kiss between those two but it's a fact that Rena loves Yuki and Yuki loves Rena.
The first game isn't a yuri game (the closest thing to yuri is Shihori) but Second Light...yeah, it is, even if we see less than in other games when it comes to the canon couple interacting.
SL can get pretty pandering with Ao's interactions as the T Lvs develop. It's a very, very slow burn to get there though. But yeah, Yuki and Rena are the real deal.
