holy shit it must SUCK to be young, being technologically illiterate and never living through technological leaps like going from GTA2 to GTA3 but only having your games have more pixels, more genders and more censorship

There’s nothing wrong with the definitive edition

These games were incredibly novel for their scale, and your freedom to frick things up.
Honestly, even then I didn't really think they were "good". They're pretty shit games really. They're awkward and janky and the mission design ranges from forgettable to shit.

This is true of VC & SA too, for sure. The graphics weren’t even good either, that came with IV.
OP, I rented III and don’t remember spending more than four or five hours with it. Never bought it. Certainty would never play it now. 3/10 at best compared with modern games.

I would rather play through III 10 times in a row before playing through V a 2nd time and I'm dead serious, they moved closer to cinematics and scripted bullshit and further from just being a goddamn VIDEO GAME with each game

I heard the definitive edition shit the bed like MCC. But pure GTA 3, it was fun for the time. It was a massive leap forward and set a new direction for the future games of the series. Vice City didn't push that much. San Andreas was huge map, 3 cities though two of the cities under utilized. The gang war to control parts of the map was fun

You don't need to be a boomer to see how big of a deal this game was.

No it wasn't the first open world game but it was the first fully 3D game with drivable cars and a living city

For better or worse, it's the game that shaped the genre for years to come. Cyberpunk may have cool visuals but are we really pretending that it's any different from GTA 3?

before gta3, every game was basically just a set of corridors, with a clear end to the level that would fade to black and the next level would begin.
even if it was an outdoor level it would be no larger than a small park.
...even if it were actually open world, there would be so much fog to obscure the lack of rendered surroundings it wasn't even worth it
gta3 was like leaving plato's cave

As much as I would like to insult zoomy-chan the reality is if you weren't there at the time a huge part of understanding of why GTA III is so significant is lost due to the enormous amount of clones it has had and the 20 years of evolution upon the foundation III laid.

I was like 7 or 8 years old when GTA 3 was new and I first played it.

You gotta realize things were different back then. It's easy to say this was trash (it kinda is in retrospect) but that's only because objectively superior games exist that followed up on it.

You're comparing GTA 3 to the later GTA games, Saints Row, Sleeping Dogs, other open world games, all that shit.

Back then, all I had to compare it to was Shenmue, the NES Legend of Zelda (never had the SNES or N64 Zelda games), Driver, and a shit ton of racing, console FPS, and platforming games. You gotta think back to 2001 when all this wasn't stuff you could easily find.

Didn't have any better options because none existed, and it was revolutionary for its time.

It's like the first time you get cable television and have dozens of channels. Today I'd never want to go back to it and any Zoomershit who tries watching basic cable is going to wonder what the frick is the appeal, but back in the day, that shit was liberating beyond belief, especially when you grew up as a very little kid with only the 8 or so local channels.

That's what GTA 3 was like.

I remember talking to my friend at school in the second grade and he was telling me how he got this game where you could run people over and kill them and I assumed he was lying cause it sounded too good to be true. I went to his house later and he had the game on and the first thing I saw was him shooting prostitutes with the shotgun and my mind was blown.

Now are you talking about GTA 3 (2001) or Death Race (1976)

      Get off Ganker grandpa

ngl the fact you couldn't play Death Race in an arcade in a 3D era GTA game like Vice City is a big missed opportunity

gta 3 still has the best atmosphere of any gta game. i don't know if they planned that or it happened after the fact because of hardware limitations though

      Anonymous

Hardware limitations but also rockstar was based on New York City so they had access to the city. That's why GTAIV is full of soul and it's why Vice City and San Andreas feel more fantasy because those are really based on movies and the romanticized 80s Miami and 90s L.A.

That's why GTA V is kinda soulless. They probably spent a shit ton of money on scouting and locations, and it was probably Rockstar San Diego doing all that as a proxy.

It wasn't the first open-world game, but it might as well have been...
Every game wanted to be GTA.
If you see a little mini-map in the corner of the screen of the game you're playing - it's because GTA.

it wasn't the first scrolling platformer, but it might as well have been...
Every game wanted to be SMB.
If you're jumping around while moving to the right in some indie game - it's because SMB.

It was only good for its time because open world 3D games back then were less than a handful and the jump from 2D to 3D was handled nicely.
Nowadays, GTA3 is easily the worst of the modern GTAs despite what its defenders claim. It didn't age gracefully at all.

Imagine going back to the middle ages or ancient egypt and giving them a shitty old 1995 suzuki jeep car. Their fricking mind would be absolutly blown but if you see one on the street today you will be like `what a fricking shitty car just give it for recycling`. Something similar is happening with GTA III and today's gamers

  31. 1 year ago

    Open world
You can steal any car to travel across a map
Can larp and follow traffic signs
    Can also walk
    Can shoot anyone
    You can fight anyone
Some peons start shit with you
    Ambulance responds to murders
    Police chases you
You can have sex with hoes
    You have money
    Npcs have lines
Day and night cycle with sunny, cloudy, fog and rain.

Ofc now the game is shit but back then the city felt alive and new especially because the game came out when platformers were still popular. It was something new

    >I’m playing the definitive right
Then you'll never know what's GTA3 like. The original one runs well on 15-20 years old hardware too, there's no need to waste your time with atrocious remakes. To get an idea of how amazing a fully 3D GTA felt when 3 dropped look up a few gameplay videos of GTA 2 and compare the two. The difference is night and day, and that's not saying 2 wasn't a fantastic game. A 3D GTA was just a different kind of beast: you knew it was bound to happen in the future but to actually hold it in your hands and get to play it... it was indeed amazing despite the glaring performance issues.

The "definitive" version is censored and watered down. "Offensive" content, soundtracks, and dialogue was removed.
