Zoomers who didn’t play these games growing up, how do you feel about OoT/MM? Are you able to enjoy them?
I'm a millenial but I played them first on Wii VC.
They're good games. I like Majora more.
We know how they feel just from the daily OOT posts on this board.
They pretend like these games can't possibly be good as cope for missing out on them.
Classic zoomer revisionism.
>Are you able to enjoy them?
Nah I need a Remake to enjoy old shit. Sorry not sorry.
I played OoT for the first time a couple years ago after I played BotW (which I enjoyed a lot)
I was able to enjoy OoT very much and I think it is a fantastic game and probably one of the best 3D action adventure games to this day. It's a very well done game.
I like OoT about as much as BotW. Link's Awakening is my favorite.
I grew up with Nintendo GameCube and only played TP back then. Nowadays whenever I play Nintendo games my experience is mostly the same, they’re consistently 7-8/10 but they never wow me and I don’t feel the urge to replay them and get invested in the series
Why are you implying people older than zoomers would waste money on a knock off PC? Just because I'm on the road to 40 doesn't mean I didn't first play them on 3DS.
Hell, I didn't even play the original until the GBA Classic release because back when we had an NES I thought it seemed stupid (and was proven wrong when I finally tried it).
Like most of the inbetween games, they're okay but never gave the same adventure feel the original and BotW/TotK do.
Reason why I’m asking zoomers specifically is because somebody who lived and played other video games during the early 3D era would still be much more likely to enjoy OoT/MM even if they only played it for the first time recently having experienced other similarly limited performance games. With zoomers I’m wondering if they are just inherently filtered by older games, because I know I’ve always had a tough time enjoying acclaimed 2D scrollers that were before my time.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is easily the best game ever created. Nothing comes close, as nothing else succeeds to the extent that it does in creating the sense of ineffable hyper-reality that everyone who deeply loves the game experiences, and only a handful of games after it even attempt to achieve this.
At the same time, it could easily be far better than it already is. Its otherwise incredibly solid combat system is barely taken advantage of because the game has so few aggressive enemies that even have a chance to inflict serious damage on you, and you have every opportunity to gain more life than they could take away, so the sense of threat and danger that would have added so much to the experience is lost very quickly.
Likewise, while it does a stand out job of creating the impression of a 'living world', Majora's Mask and subsequent game show just how much further dynamic character interaction can be taken in the context of a Zelda title and what can be done with this, so despite OoT's incredible combination of strengths, including having time travel and day/night cycles, the relatively static state that many minor characters end up in prevent if from living up to the highest achievements of the series in this specific way.
But the fact that it's as acclaimed as it is *despite* having these (comparative) weaknesses only shows just how unparalleled it is.
Zelda games outside of the 2003-2011 period have immaculate design. Wind Waker was rushed out the door, TP was also rushed and focused too much on fan appeasement, Minish Cap was rushed out and its pacing suffers for it, and most of Skyward Sword's development was wasted trying to make motion controls work.
I like the 2d Zelda games more
Majora's mask atmosphere is incredible and worth playing if only for that
We did play them growing up, the 3ds remakes. Oot 3d was my first zelda game
>OoT
It just simply never connected with me the same way the other 3D zelda games did. Don't get me wrong in terms of actual design is immaculate and if replay it WILL have fun (just did a couple months in fact) but personally i would rather play TP or MM or heck, WW that i enjoy much less. And i actually got to grow with this one (god bless 3D).
>MM
Absolutely. I can see its lesser elements in design but in terms of uniqueness is superb. Learning of its existence was mindblowing and probably my second favorite Zelda game. Learned how to emulate just to play this one.
I seriously don't get why would anyone "enjoy" TP. It's easily THE worst main line Zelda game to date. The pacing is shit, the world design and dungeons are trash, and the attempt at "ebinn story & memorable characters" falls flat all the time. It also suffers of the mid-00s' Bloom & Blur cancer, and has emptier open world than BotW.
The only good part of TP was the snow mansion dungeon with the yeti
Arbiter's Ground is a shit dungeon but a great set piece.
The pacing's only shit for the opening portion. The lakebed temple through the endgame is, barring maybe a diversion or two, paced really well, and crucially, it has enough fucking dungeons. Three before the paradigm shift, then five after. Still not up to OOT's level, but a fair sight better than whatever the fuck Wind Waker was.
>Only the first 1/2 of the game is paced like dogshit, it's fine!
It's really not, especially since that protracted tutorial is where the meat of the writing and exploration comes in. Said writing falls apart in several ways, and the overworld is just bad because it was designed for the horseback stuff.
TP is only good for those dungeons in the back half. Four of them are proper dungeons, but two of those (Arbiter's Ground and Temple of Time) are more set piece than dungeon. Snowpeak and Sky City are actually good, but they're the only dungeons that stand up next to the other 3D Zelda dungeons. Then you get Palace of Twilight and Hyrule Castle, which are essentially mini dungeons to ferry you to the ending.
TP has a lot of good ideas but terrible execution. Its grander narrative ambitions fall apart once Midna gets ZANT'D and it just becomes the typical ALttP style "you did the three baby dungeons, now go play the rest of them in quick succession" formula. Most of its unique mechanics are poorly utilized or end up destroying the pacing. It's an uneven mess that's better than the sum of its parts but still like an 8, maybe a 7, in a series of 9s and 10s.
I won't disagree with most of your assessment but Zelda isn't a series of 9s and 10s. TP is an 8, more realistically a 7.5, preceded and followed by a 7 and a 4, respectively. It's not at all a passionate game, so I can't rate it too highly, but it's the weakest 3D Zelda that I'm happy to actually sit down and replay, and that counts for something.
If you think me calling Wind Waker a 7 is too harsh, that's fair, but I just didn't gel with it nearly as much as it seemed to expect me to.
Wind Waker's half a game, embarrassingly unfinished, but it does what it's trying to do better than TP.
SS being a below average game is ridiculous. I don't think very fondly of it, but it's way better than most games. It just has the kind of pacing problems things like Final Fantasy X and God of War and Soul Reaver ran into. If it's a 4, what the fuck is Okami, a 2? Absolutely stupid opinion.
Other guy is being too harsh with a 4 but skyward sword would have been a major flop if it didn't have the zelda IP bolted on top of it.
Its the only mainline zelda game I have dropped and have no interest in returning to. Everything that it does is just done better by existing entries and the motion controls actively work against themselves with things like the directional weakpoints.
>It would have bombed
Yeah, but not because of its quality; because it was on the Wii and everyone would compare it to Zelda. If those factors didn't exist it probably would have sold somewhere between 500k and 1.25M.
Only played the HD version, but the motion combat and linearity are the two biggest shortcomings. It does have joystick combat but that was even worse than waggle...
Def a bottom tier zelda game for me.
Did finish it and the ending was actually nice with link and zelda going to live together in the woods.
Moe Zelda was cute but the Wii controls sucked ass especially in that bug catching island. After forcing myself to 100% hero mode within a week after buying that fancy collector's box with the gold wiimote, I sold the whole thing to a friend and never looked back.
And I find what Wind Waker is trying to do to be annoying at best and anti-fun at worst. The great sea is inherently an unfun concept to me, it makes the entire game into LITERAL content islands. There's no cohesion to the entire overworld's design, and the on-foot space that can be considered "overworld" is miniscule, while so much dungeon space shares an aesthetic with other dungeons it somehow manages to feel samey too. The earth and wind temple both being comparatively dark and dank underground spaces felt awful.
Hey, if you like aesthetics and quantity of content over something shorter and better, more power to you. I'd love TP if it had good content.
Shorter yes, better... I really don't think it is. At least not for me. It didn't play any different than TP as far as I'm concerned, so my preference for more content wins out here.
I don't think the quality difference is dramatic, so I err towards the shorter game.
I'll agree that it's not a huge difference, I do just prefer how TP plays and is designed. Backloaded, rewarding of long-term play, consistent.
Either way I feel bad for the Zelda team. Should have just made one GC Zelda with a long ass dev period.
Yeah, that I can 100% agree to. The resulting game would just be so much better.
>The pacing's only shit for the opening portion
No, it's for the whole game.
The wolf form is also utilized poorly. You first run with a black-screen sniff vision for hours, and then later don't use the form at all.
> a fair sight better than whatever the fuck Wind Waker was.
Wind Waker is MASSIVELY superior game in every single conceivable manner. Literally top-3 Zelda games until BotW came out.
>it is what OoT wanted to be.
Wrong, TP WANTS to be OOT, but the devs had neither time, interest nor skills to DO OOT at all no longer.
TP literally had NO STORY up until a year before its release, and in the end Miyamoto himself just went "meh, do another OOT".
It's an all around unbaked clusterfuck lacking direction, trying to cash in on the LotR movie boom at he time.
>No, it's for the whole game.
How the fuck so? The pacing issue is the damn tears of light segments, they're only in the first part of the game. That and the long-ass tutorial, which is OBVIOUSLY in the lead of the game.
>Wind Waker is MASSIVELY superior game in every single conceivable manner
The moment to moment gameplay is largely indistinguishable from TP, but TP has more content and better design in between them. Every single individual part of sailing is so unfun I'm shocked it managed to exit development like this. Minutes of blue boredom is not a worthwhile sacrifice to avoid fifteen seconds of loading screen.
>How the fuck so?
The pacing affects both the gameplay and the story. You are literally pulled around in a leash for hours, and the game doesn't know how to end itself.
>The moment to moment gameplay is largely indistinguishable from TP
That's bullshit. You are given fine amount of freedom right after Dragonroost, and before that the game does well better job introducing its mechanics and story pawns to you.
TP is just padded, empty and ugly trash.
>Every single individual part of sailing is so unfun
Literally one of the best parts in the game and one of the comfiest elements in the Zelda franchise. But hating that element + shilling TP makes it clear that you're just another ADHD Souls-homo playing the wrong franchise.
>The pacing affects both the gameplay and the story.
The pacing that only picks up with time, unlike WW's that dies IN THE FUCKING ENDGAME with the triforce hunt? Yeah. Fuck you.
>You are given fine amount of freedom right after Dragonroost
MUH FREEDOM is not fun. Not inherently. I prefer linear and DESIGNED to "FREEDOM" bullshit.
>if you don't like taking minutes to change the wind, set yourself up, and then doing nothing but reacting to simplified stimuli for five straight minutes, you're ADHD
Suck a fucking cock.
You can tell they were struggling with the story.
No it isn’t. It is what OoT wanted to be. That isn’t to shit on Ocarina, the N64 wasn’t able to fit the complete package without the 64DD. Unfortunately TP is still unfinished. The bird calls and other animal stuff was likely a focus that got cut way back considering how it is dropped fairly quickly despite all the tutorials around different grasses to turn into animal calls. Part of that may be having to port it to motion controls meant cutting other content, or maybe they couldn’t flesh it out as much as they thought they could. Sadly, a Beast Master Link has potential that likely won’t ever be explored now. Overall, Zelda hadn’t been this much sword and sorcery probably since Zelda II. He is the most agile and competent fighter by the end of the game because through the adventure he has trained with all these different masters, including the Hero of Time. Even the call back to his sumo fight with the Gorons to sync with Midna to put beast Ganon is nicely done. Link really goes through the full heroes journey.
well said, TP to me feels like the ultimate heros journey out of all of them. TP link feels the most "heroic" out of all of them to me at least
I really wonder what went wrong when they were writing TP.
>Tons of side characters with less personality than the N64 NPCs who are treated like they matter but get dropped quickly from the story.
>Ilia subplot goes nowhere.
>Bulbin feels like he was supposed to be the game's Agahnim/Ghirahim with a surprise face turn, but instead you only see him like twice.
>Zant gets cucked for an inferior retread of Ocarina of Time's ending.
>Zelda exists to be in the E3 trailer and PLOT Midna's illness away.
>The Resistance is treated like they'll matter. They don't.
>No denouement for Ordon Village. OoT, WW, even ALttP handle this better.
>Gorons feel like they were an obligation. Zora as well, but they get even less screen time.
>Occocco and the Dropped Subplot.
>We have a Sheikah town because...uh...you like OoT, right?!
>I really wonder what went wrong when they were writing TP.
They literally started thinking of the story AFTER the big E3 reveal. Yeah, seriously.
And afterwards, it went through 2-3 revisions + the Wii multiplat conversion.
Oh, is that why all the stuff from the trailer is at the start of the game?
It's like they were trying to mirror WW's development in every conceivable way.
>Spaceworld demo was never even intended to be a game, just a static tech demo, WW has nothing to do with it
>TP trailer is expressly made and then used as a guideline for the entire fucking game
whatever voodoo magic they were trying to invoke there worked, I like TP more than WW. Not that I hated WW for its style, I just don't gel with its gameplay.
I can't even finish TP because it's so soulless. It's literally OOT again, even TOTK was more ambitious
>Copies Dungeon order of forest fire water for act 1 except water isn't as interesting as jabu jabu
>Copies dungeon 4 poe gimmick while also simultaneously ripping off the spirit temple(i enjoyed it but come on)
>Hub world is empty as fuck, characters are forgettable, no moments hit as hard as something like finding Malon singing alone at night so Luigi doesn't boot her off the barn
>Realistic artsyle has aged like ass, majority of characters look like ass except the main ones (3 triforce and midna) who all look great
I've heard the snow cabin is kino, i wouldn't know i gave up after dungeon 4, i doubt the rest is any better
Even at the time, there was this one shot in an early cutscenes where you saw Epona's saddle up close and the texture looked awful.
>Luigi
I got a laugh imagining him firing anyone let alone out of universe.
The snow cabin's basically the ice dungeon with some shield sledding, but by that point the game just felt formulaic to me and just kept dragging on with more gameplay references to OoT like the tennis match.
I beat OoT back on GC for the first time and loved it. Didn't play MM before last year, with the Nerrel's HD mod, and I loved it.
Now image a pc port + nerrels texture pack and all the QoL stuff from the 3ds version like gyro aim.
OoT is good but i don’t think it feels the same for me as boomers who must have played it when 3D was still new. MM is actually pretty fun even though having internet guides takes away from the thrill of learning the world and its character’s by myself. Not sure how anyone did the shota love story quest without internet, idk maybe yall bought the paper strategy guide.
>Not sure how anyone did the shota love story quest without internet, idk maybe yall bought the paper strategy guide.
Nope.
I just was not an ADHD idiot.
Back in those days, people PLAYED games, instead of shitposting online. And we REPLAYED them, religiously, for years.
MM itself has some very baseline detective work gameplay loop, in a literal time loop. You wanna find a new quest and figure out how to proceed in a character's story line? You literally spy on them for a single 3-day cycle, take notes, and repeat it all from scratch until you get it right.
The fact that the Bomber's Notebook flatout showed the timeframes for the events (but not where) made them easier to pinpoint.
Exactly. The game all but spoonfeeds you the solutions, you just need to connect the dots.
Sometimes the answers lie just off the road, even within "failed" missions. The midnight 2nd hand shop for example has multiple alternative scenarios that depend on your prior actions.
Pretty much everything in the anju quest is explicitly explained to you by item descriptions, character dialogue, or bombers entries.
The only thing that isn't is clear is that you can't save the bomb lady on the first night, or that you can actually deliver mommas letter to two different people. But that second thing isn't mandatory anyways and just gets you an optional bottle.
It's really subtle too.
Kafei says someone stole his mask.
Game gives no immediate indication of who unless you witness Sakon robbing the old lady.
Clearing up more of the quest leads to you meeting the Curiosity Shop owner directing you toward Sakon in Ikana Valley but only if the thieving was actually successful.
That tiny timeframe on the notebook from 6pm to 7pm in Kafei's entry.
Saving the old lady meant Sakon didn't steal anything to trade with the shop owner, which meant they didn't interact and Kafei didn't see him at all.
I keep trying to play majoras mask but the only reason I never finished it is because every time I try to emulate it the game fucks up somehow.

Biting your bait. Good news! They did on the 3DS. I’d tell you to use citra but we all know you can’t use a computer.
2003 Zoomer. I played OOT for the first time about 4 years ago on the Wii U. Thought it was pretty good and played the PC port later, and it’s one of my top 10. Fuck Jabu Jabu though.
i recently played oot's pc port and its pretty good only bad thing is that some puzzles are cryptic and don't make any sense but they are nearly as bad as zelda 1 puzzles
I am a zoomer who played oot 3d and subsequently wii vc mm, they are my favourite games ever
Not a zoom zoom, but of the ones I’ve met ones who have played them, they generally seem to like them. Especially MM, which I think is about as close as you can get to an objective view that MM was ultimately the better of the 2 since their opinions weren’t colored by it having to live up to the sky high expectations of the other.
They are both shit games and I’m tired of informing that fact.
>trash controls
>shit mechanics
>retarded ass and stupid ass stories
>ugly as shit visuals
>stupid ass music
Nostalgia gays should be gassed
The only criticism there that’s remotely true is trash controls, and that’s due to age. They were revolutionary at the time.
>stupid ass music
Shouldn’t have pushed your luck. You would have successfully baited multiple paragraphs from me if not for this.
Majora is my favorite Zelda game. Most people will say it's because of the "dark, desolate tone" or the "deep and creepy story" but those people are tryhards. I just like being able to play as 4 (or 5 counting Fierce Deity) different Links.
The Deku need to come back sometime in something that isn't a spin-off.
I like MM because it's dripping with love and care. It isn't at all points the exact game the development team wanted to make, but it is something they poured themselves into. Every feeling they had went into it. It is the most raw and personal game to ever achieve its level of polish, and I'm not sure even recreating the exact circumstances of its creation would create something similar in this day and age. It is a truly one of a kind game.
MM kind of reminds me of LOTR. If you tried to recreate that film series again it literally could not happen, we actually saw that in real time with the shit show of the hobbit trilogy.
Even sadder is how embarrassed Nintendo and Aonuma are over the game, while I think its the best game they have ever released.
They're embarrassed because it's a great game, but one that isn't for everyone. Not even as much as OOT was, much less like every future Zelda game.
Aonuma was embarrassed by it because
1. He was less involved with it.
2. It was rushed as fuck.
3. The emphasis on experimenting it instilled in the team led to Wind Waker, which bombed.
You'll notice he stopped talking about the kinds of things he said MM lacked being flaws after 3D came out and people were mixed on the changes.
The Hobbit movies were bad because WB forced it into a trilogy when it's a shorter story than Fellowship of the Ring. Nothing to do with "you can't do this anymore!", everything to do with the company responding to another piece of media it's tied to.
This is a common trend with anybody who works in any sort of creative field. They tend to be overly critical of their earlier works because they get hyperfocused on minor flaws that the vast majority of people don’t even notice or care about, and begin missing the forest for the trees. Artists are almost always the least qualified critics of their own works.
That's probably because it's the Zelda game that focused more heavily on the NPCs with their own lives and problems and the actual world along with a grand adventure where all of the attention and care isn't concentrated on Link. Most of the other games felt like a checklist where you're controlling Link while everything else felt like a backdrop thanks to lack of screentime among other things.
born in 2003. first zelda game was windwaker on wii u, never played zelda b4 then but i knew of it. never played MM, i started playing oot on switch a few months ago. love the music. the graphics are ass nowadays for it's time i think it looks really good. i'm honestly quite surprised what was possible back then. i havent finished it cuz it is a zelda game and they tend to make it difficult to figure out what you need to do next. but good thing im playing this in 2023 where i can just look up what to do instead of 1999 when computers were potatoes and information was harder to come by, let alone for a new game. overall i think it is fun
I played OoT back on the N64, yes I'm old. That shit was magical. It was unlike anything I'd experienced prior and I had already played Mario 74. The only modern equivalent would probably be VR stuff.
Arin is right about ocarina but Ganker will never admit it because "muh e-celeb" and clips of him sucking at videogames
Completely overrated game
Egofaptor is clinically retarded, ecelb moniker need not be applied. I respect Stamper and Shad over him.
I was fortunate to OoT with my GC Wind Waker edition, as I missed out on the N64 due to having a PlayStation. My friend had a N64 but we played Smash and Stadium.
I really liked it but I can’t lie and say I played WW first. I have never been able to get into MM however at all. The time element just messes with me and makes me freeze up
OoT is far superior to WW however
It's not that bad, really. They give you more than enough time to focus on specific task like going from Clock Town to finishing the tasks leading to the opening of the first dungeon. If you fail, then so what? Just redo it with the knowledge and equipment you gained to optimize your run and continue even farther until you reach the corresponding checkpoint items that are saved permanently that you can ignore that part of the world altogether in subsequent timeloops if you choose to do so.
I'«m a millenial but I didn't grow up playing zelda either and only started going through the franchise about 5 years ago.
OoT was okay. Haven't played a lot of MM yet (picrel). The best zelda so far is Link's awakening DX. SO far I prefer 2D zeldas.
>I'«m a millenial
Shouldn’t you be playing games that “Spread the Message” of woke culture, you incredulous chud lover? Your generation is the worst in human history.
I'm not American, anon.
the fuck are you, gen x? shouldn't you be working your back breaking graveyard shift job that pays 16 an hour?
https://www.them.us/story/gen-z-millennials-queerest-generation-gallup-poll Love to break it to you zoom zoom, but you guys are way more likely to chud out.
Your checklist is flawed, given that OOT should have a "ng+" equivalent with Master Quest - which is largely better than the vanilla game.
Adventure of Link also has a second quest. And 1 and 3 have BS and AST, official + fan non-timed versions. And Awakening has unique content between DX and Switch, which also has a second playthrough via Hero Mode. And Four Swords Anniversary has new post-game content. And TP has Hero Mode. I'd even argue that MM 3D is different enough to count.
Most Zelda games have a second playthrough in some form.
OoT is a boring game with a barren world and insultingly easy dungeons. People pretending it invented things are stupid seeing as you can play even older games and see the things people say it invented. MM is actually a decent game with good atmosphere and some fun quests.
Not a zoomer. Millenial, and people accuse me of being both a boomer or a zoomer depending on how they want to insult me.
Grew up slightly poor and sheltered, so my experience with Ocarina when it came out was watching my friends play it on their n64s.
Always wanted to play it. Started a playthrough 2-3 years ago, and finally beat it this year.
The game is unplayably bad.
It's incredibly charming, everything is pretty nice during the child Link part of the game, in spite of its bad controls, but once you get to the adult Link part of the game and the dungeons get longer and all the humor drips out of the game, it just became a fucking chore.
Everybody had hyped this game to oblivion, so I was expecting at least a good ending to make up for the unfun slog that the second half of the game was, but at the end of the game you don't even rescue Zelda: she sends you back in time, which means she's stuck in the ruined Hyrule timeline.
I guess it's going for some kind of bittersweet fairy tale thing, but I fucking hate it. Just sort of added insult to injury after forcing myself through the second half.
i played both of these for the first time blind this past month.
i was shocked at how much i liked playing OoT, and i wanted to keep playing after i was done.
it was most fun up until the time skip, got a little slow with the first few sage temples, and picked back up again starting with the bottom of the well and the shadow temple.
i kept imagining how mindblowing it mustve been to play OoT when it came out, because even playing it today, it was a very memorable experience.
i expected to like MM more all around, and i do like the atmosphere way more- but it was a little less fun to play than OoT. its still great and when you go directly from OoT to MM you see some flat upgrades, but the whole rewinding time bit made some things needlessly annoying for the sake of sticking with the theme.
the other zelda game i played was BotW and i got bored of it and stopped after a few hours. maybe i had to care about zelda more
BOTW is basically a completely different genre. Its zelda in name alone. WW and TP are both traditional zeldas but much weaker than the 64 versions IMO. Despite being made in only a year something like MM feels way more polished and complete than WW.
That is because the team they hired during the Wii U scramble hated Zelda so rather than fire them, Nintendo decided the youth would lead the company and zoomer japs just wanted to make Minecraft again.
i see
im planning on WW next followed by TP- ive heard about those two being more close to the traditional formula, and thats definitely what i want from these games.
its a shame that a lot of people say they dont really live up to OoT/MM, though. i honestly think i would have had a great time playing through OoT a second time immediately after the credits stopped on my first playthrough.
i can see myself beating WW, TP, then maybe SS, and then just replaying OoT whenever i get the itch for more zelda after
OOT has master quest, which gives alternative versions of the dungeons with new enemies and challenges. It also has a ton of romhacks and probably the most fully featured randomizer in any video game.
I might get some shit for this, but I unironically feel like romhacks like the missing link are just straight better than some mainline zeldas.
>randomizers and romhacks
i dont know why ive never even considered OoT having those, but of course it would
thank you anon, im about to get deep into these
>but I unironically feel like romhacks like the missing link are just straight better than some mainline zeldas
I don't feel this way about Missing Link, but I do about Master of Time
Triforce of the Gods relocalization is the best way to play ALttP. The "Redux" retranslation is terrible.
I would disagree on the WW part. I suppose on a purely objective on paper level WW can't compare, but the absolute comfyness of the game + best combat in a zelda game ever more than makes up for it. It also has the best story imo of any zelda game. Probably tied with OOT for my favorite and I'm a 32 year old OOT OG.
>best combat in a zelda game ever
Not him obviously but I never got this praise. TP has the hidden moves and neither game has anything that actually justifies the tools you get so for me TP wins.
BOTW is nothing like Zelda. Caring more about Zelda would only make you like it less, unless you were super big on some very particular elements of specifically Zelda 1 and Wind Waker at the expense of everything else from every other Zelda game.
Glad to hear you enjoyed OOT and MM. Personally I'd say that WW, TP, and even SS are technically elaborations of the same formula that birthed OOT, but none of them are nearly as good.
>BOTW is nothing like Zelda.
Except the part where everything about it is like other Zelda games, just on a very large map.
I have never played a Zelda game and the only nintendo console I own is a wii
That Majora's art is gorgeous
OoT is great but MM is overrated trash. Forcing you to restart every 54 minutes isn't clever, it's just annoying.
>restart
It takes less than 2 minutes to restock on your important perishable items. Arrows and bombs take literal seconds to refill if you just use the warp song.
And all that extra work. what reward does it have? None, it's there because of a stupid pointless gimmick that isn't challenging or fun.
This is the official list of Zelda games

>LOOK AT ME, I'M PARROTING ABSOLUTELY ATROCIOUS TASTE WITH A FEW GAMES PEOPLE SEEM TO LIKE
I accept your concession. You can’t win every argument, so I hope you learn from this lesson, Champ.
I didn't play them until about 5-6 years ago since I never had a console as a kid and only played on pc.
The games were pretty cool, especially Majora. But overall I'm glad I owned a pc instead of a console as a kid. The games I got were so much better, original, well written with much more creative gameplay and settings.
Best thread on Ganker atm.
I played Ocarina first in 2015 and loved it, might be my favorite.
I played Majora on 3DS and never finished it. Then people said to play the N64 version... Still don't like it.
I have tried multiple times to get into ocarina of time but always got bored very quickly
I found majora's mask instantly really cool and think it's a brilliant game
I couldn't tell you why there's such a big difference for me. I have no idea
I fucking hate the Nintendo 64 controller
I personally love both games, but I can completely understand liking one but not the other. Despite reusing the same assets, they have very very different overall appeals. OoT is a pure dungeon crawler and the vast majority of its content is encountered as a result of simply beating the game, while MM’s dungeons and main quest are secondary to mask collecting and interacting with NPCs. If you asked me to recommend a game with a similar ”vibe” as MM, I would sooner say something like Undertale than OoT.
I haven't played Majora's Mask, but the timelessness of Ocarina of Time impressed me when I played it. I expected A Link to the Past to be a more enjoyable game, being a refined 2D game, whereas OoT would be an experimental 3D game that's notable more for being innovative than actually being fun, but I had more fun with Ocarina of Time overall, to my surprise. The lack of camera control was not as much of a bother as I expected and I rarely found myself struggling to control it like I thought I might. I wouldn't say I loved it, but that it's an early 3D game doesn't have too much negative impact on it and I think it has a good bit of value beyond just the technological step forward it was at the time.
I started playing the 3ds version of OOT a while ago and couldn't sit through it. I'll emulate the N64 version later when I have time.
Use the PC port instead so you can fix glitches and quick swap boots.
Born circa 2000, played the 3DS versions of both. Quite frankly no video game has even come close to being these two in regards to realising the feeling of living out a fairy tale. Not even other Zelda's.
There are plenty of fantasy adventure games, for sure, but it's more than just man with a sword killing goblins. You are placed in a charming and whimsical setting filled with bizarre characters who teach you songs and dances and tell funny stories for no reason. Nothing is taken for granted and yet nothing outstays its welcome either. They're great.
Thank Koizumi for that.
He also worked on ALttP, LA, and WW but then just left the Zelda team except to supervise MM 3D.
I think the SNES and GB games were good at it.
I want to play these for the first time. What would be better? Playing the original on my switch, playing the 3ds versions or emulating on my deck?
I think most people were refer to OoT 3DS for the QoL but the actual atmosphere took a hit with the lighting and art direction.
Same problems with MM, but the 3DS remake "fixed" things to streamline it for the casual crowd but also made other things worse, far worse in fact like some of the boss fight designs in general. The overall unrelenting pressure of the original MM also got lost in the transition.
Emulation of the N64 OGs is the best bet for all of them, if you can't get yourself a real console.
Switch emulation's fucking garbage, and 3DS demakes fuck massive amounts of shit up in other manner.
If you're a graphics whore, look up the Nerrel's 4K Texture mod. Its installer has a mod for OoT as well, plus some smol, optional QOL improvement mods
Emulation > 3ds > switch version.
Normally I'd tell you to play the PC port of OOT, but thats gonna make it hard as hell to go back to emulation for MM.
Just emulate both on your switch, don't overcomplicate it.
OoT was a let down to how much folks hyped it up, I really dont remember much of it. Granted, I played it like, 10 years after LttP, and I remembered more from LttP than I do OoT.
