It's not hard. Just have very low quality textures which the PS3 was notorious for.

Low resolution textures gets you around the memory limitations issues. Doesn't do shit to get around under-powered GPUs and especially so for the PS3 which had a very under-powered GPU because Sony stupidly put all their faith in the UNLIMITED POWER OF THE CELL!

      >save file taking 256 mb
No. Even if the saves were loaded into RAM for saving(which seems pretty moronic), playstation had isolated saves, so one game save couldn't frick with the rest. This doesn't happen though, because saves are written directly to the card.

        Anonymous

The save file itself wouldn't get larger than 256MB but it would want to interface with over 256MB of data. The way the game works is there's basically the base game data on the disc that is fixed and then the save file says "Now change these things about the base game". Sort of like a mod except it's inherently persistent. If it wants to change a lot of shit all over the place then that might result in the game loading more data than there is memory to hold it. Bethesda basically relied on the automated cell reset to flush save data and keep the save files small but when cell resets happen is dependent on how the player plays the game and some cells will never reset. This is why people used to go into an interior cell and just do nothing but wait for a few days. That was basically making sure the player had minimal interference with the reset function and so whatever could be flushed from the save would be flushed.

idk but I still remember Fallout 3 randomly crashing when the savefile reached -20mbs, I don't know how they didn't take Bethesda to court over that shit

Define "run". If you actually played it on PS3 you know it was a slideshow.

Kind of. Fortunately Skyrim gets progressively shittier to the point you don't want to play it past 40 hours anyway so the problem sorts itself out.

Original Skyrim was under 4.7GB to fit on a DVD.
I was playing it on a computer with 1GB of ram and a gpu with 512MB of vram. CPU was athlon x2 4800+ a dual core amd64 architecture beast at 2.4GHz.
But it had only 512KB of cash per core and the ram was ddr2 at like 400MHz.
Meanwhile IBM powerpc architecture custom built 8 core cpu built with Sony and customised to be used for games.
With a front side bus and ram at the same speed as the cpu cores.

They really pulled every trick out of the PS3's book on that one.

The Cell is just a PPC with a lot of extra vector operations. Nothing really special. In fact, it's not really that different architecturally from PowerPC macs, the gamecube and Wii. Just more cores and instruction extensions.

Actually they didn't. Skyrim PS3 was a horrible broken piece of shit that became entirely unplayable after 20+ hours. Source: I played it and it was one of the few games in my collection that I returned because it kept crashing after 15 minute play sessions. I don't think it has been patched much.

They did patch it. The only Bethesda game that didn't fix the bug where every new action, object moved or item bought/sold led to absurd memory leaks and unusable save files was New Vegas, which is an unplayable piece of shit up to today.

PS3 launched with about a dozen games, PS4 launched with more than double. In the months following the launch, the PS4 lineup of new games was also stronger than the PS3's.
The PS5 is an absolute disaster though. It launched with like 6 games and the lazy fricks didn't even give you a patch or option to run all backward compatible games at 60fps or higher res. If you do have it for a game, it's an exception, not the rule.
But you're absolutely right when it comes to the power consumption, at least when it comes to the slim (45nm RSX/40nm GPU). It only consumed up to around 95w while gaming. Even the PS4 slim consumed up to around 110w, albeit while being way more powerful, so it's more efficient.

        >lazy fricks didn't even give you a patch or option to run all backward compatible games at 60fps or higher res
pretty sure it aint that easy as just a patch. incompetent Black person devs tie physics to framerate all the time

Right now if you want to game for cheap your best option is to get a PS4 and put CFW in it. It has a really vast library of third party titles, though it's missing some PS3 classics still.
I still love my PS3 in spite of it being a piece of shit. I'm poor as frick and don't care about consuming the newest virtual toy too much, but I might just graduate it later this year.
