Ren Amamiya was first introduced in the anime, which at the time was Japan-only. The manga isn't even written by anyone at Atlus, it's a glorified fanfiction. The anime has all the voice actors and Shoji Meguro involved.
If an explicitly canon name does not exist, I usually name characters after their voice actor, if applicable. Since the game takes place in Japan, I named him Jun Fukuyama until P5 Dancing Star Night solidified Ren Amamiya as the official canon name.
On a semi related note, I remember replaying the game and trying to give the PTs a name that would be ourageous in universe, but it turns out there's just enough space to write "Shido is evi", I dont think it was intentional but man I needed just one more available character to write the full sentence.
>Let the player pick their name despite the MC having a canon name >The people who type in their actual real name
This is such a stupid thing in JRPG's. Dragon Quest XI did this as well, even though the MC's canon name is Eleven, which is also a really moronic ass name.

>looks up the MC's canon name and types that in
He has 2 canon names though
>he thinks the manga names are canon
>He has 2 canon names though
How did this happen in the first place. Did Atlus not coordinate them?
>you enter your name
>game says Please Wait: Generating Audio and all characters now use your name in dialogue
How do you react
This actually was possible in a Saturn dating game but only for the childhood friend character. Unless you bought a bunch of additional disks via mail
The tokimemi memorial girl's side ganes on the PlayStation 2 would work with any nane you typed in

Ren Amamiya. It absolutely sucked having to go back and play through the game simply because the canon manga name wasn't accepted in western media.

I wish I could take current year pictures but it's been so wet most of the stuff has hardly grown
I chose Akira Amamiya.
Ren Amamiya sounds too boring and Akira Kurusu sounds too edgy.
Edgy how? Both the first and last name are normal-sounding names in Japanese.
I don't want to self-insert that hard.

It would be better if they at least fill it up with the default name first and then make it editable
