Nintendo 64 was a mistake: Either Itoi should have just waited for the Gamecube, or just downgraded his dreams & expectations for a decent Mother 3 for N64 and maybe go full in for a Mother 4 or another game later.

You idiots keep forgetting how troubled Mother 2's development was because Itoi is an artist so he's bound to change his mind many times. He even says in the '92 preview of Mother 2 that when he works on a game it feels like he can work on it for a long time/forever or something like that.
This is why Mother 2 barely came out, thanks to Iwata.
Now imagine this with Mother 3 which was like orders of magnitude more ambitious in scope.

I wonder if the n64 mother 3 would have been more successful, story wise. the gba version certainly felt abridged and tried too hard on the emotional beats with almost no setup.
From what I understand, all the chapters from before the timeskip were mostly the same, which is probably why the story is all over the place after chapter 3 ends.
I vaguely recall hearing that there wasn't even supposed to be a timeskip in that sense, but that the entire game would be a gradual timeskip with some chapters taking place months to years apart. I'm not sure is there any truth to that though.
I doubt it. The N64 didnt sell nearly as well as the GBA did, so if anything it would have likely done worse.
