Frick off Capcom, you waited too long. You don't just get to strut in after a decade and a half and casually replace the names fans have been using for years. If you wanted to be first to the punch with your fanfiction, you should have localized this in 2011.
I will continue using Sebastian Debeste and Ray Shields. Simple as.
Admittedly "Burn Winner" is actually kind of witty, if a little ham-fisted ("Bernie" would have been more subtle, although it would also disrupt the joke a little too much).
The Fandom seems to think so, for some reason, and it certainly fits all the way down ("Born Winner" and he likes to play with fire). So for the time being I'll assume they know something I don't.
GK2 is the one game in the series where I committed a lot of Japanese names to memory (Justine = Hakari Mikagami, Ray = Tateyuki Shigaraki, Sebastian = Yumihiko Ichiyanagi, etc.) because I was looking up info on their characters at a time I thought I'd never see the game in English.
Based Capcom making the EOPs seethe by replacing the arbitrary fan fiction names with their own arbitrary fan fiction names. At the end of the day fan fiction is fan fiction and the Japanese names will always be the true names.
BASED JP reading chad using the real, authentic names instead of localized japanifornia shit

uhhm sorry EOP they're "Eustace" and "Fender" now HAHAHAHA
DGS's Japanese text was region locked because it has the name "Holmes" in it which could get them in trouble with the Doyle estate. The original, untroonylated name was just so powerful that Capcom was forced to bury it and hide it from lowly EOP eyes kek
The latter stories only became public domain in 2023. And the Holmes estates are sue happy gays.

All the stories weren't fully public domain until recently, so you had the Doyle estate trying to wring out the last of the royalties until then by insisting that all forms of Sherlock being released were based on the later stories still under copyright
Neither of you read what I wrote correctly...

You're right, I'm moronic. Still, Herlock Sholmes is itself an obvious copyright dodge, so even if it has history, if that history is doing the exact same thing it's doing now, it doesn't really change much

im not mad about it since it was after all just a fan translation. but I think there's a decently high chance twitter spams capcom and they change them
We don't know other than Eddie Fenders (Ray Shields) Verity Gavelle (Justine Courtney) and Eustace Winner (Debeste).
Burn Winner (Blaise) has been circling around for some reason.
Ah, I almost forgot. Some guy on reddit is guessing Tabby Lloyd for Nicole and that makes sense.

Verity Gavelle is good, arguably an upgrade.
Eddie Fender is meh. Pun is too on the nose.
Eustace is a good first name, fit with the Japanese pun better. Winner is shitty last name though, way too on the nose again. Debeste was better.
Dai Long Lang is probably staying the same because I think that just does what his son's name does (takes his Japanese name, Dairyuu Rou, and reads it in Chinese).
I think the reason it sounds weird to me is because I've only ever associated the name Eustache with really old guys. It's like a 15 year-old named Muriel.
It highlights what was so amateurish about the name considerations in the fan patch. They obsessed over the meaning of a particular part of the Japanese name to a fault, and chose "Sebastian" out of random preference. It had no meaning, now there's both Winner (more believable and gets across he thinks he's winning all the time) and combined with Eustace you get the funny meaning of his name.
Justine Courtney was also a shitty name. Knightley didn't carry across the quirky nature of the character just literally looking like a chess piece. Knight and Rook is way more goofy and on the nose.
I'm also happy about the latter example because I knew a fan who took Knightley way too seriously, something fans tend to do in general. The humor is often ignored by the weebs, making Ace Attorney out to be a Steins Gate esque affair or something instead of the ridiculous satire it is.
>making Ace Attorney out to be a Steins Gate esque affair or something instead of the ridiculous satire it is
Ace Attorney would be improved if it were more like Steins;Gate.
I think that was done to convey the tone of speech she used in the Japanese dialogue. She is supposed to have a very lofty speech pattern where she sounds like she's a divine avatar of the scales of justice.
the group that did the fan translation for GAA is still asking for help translating the 4th and 5th case after everyone abandoned it after it got an official release
I'm still mad they changed Cosney Megundal and Hart Vortex, those were such good names.
Magnus McGilded and Mael Stronghart are okay names, but their original names were so goddamn good
Cosney Megundal is a Japanese pun made to sound kind of like an English name, as are most of the names in that game. It doesn't make sense to leave it untranslated.
It's been ten years, man, I can't change now...
Debeste was always a piece of shit name. So was Raymond Shields. The fan translator team didn't get it.

Is it confirmed that he's Burn Winner? Because Bernie Winner is great.
The Fandom seems to think so, for some reason, and it certainly fits all the way down ("Born Winner" and he likes to play with fire). So for the time being I'll assume they know something I don't.
Nah, it's just a bunch of homosexuals making shit up. The only names confirmed so far are in the trailer and the website.
I hope his name is "Chad Winner" or something ridiculously pompous.
If they do a burn-related pun, I can see them naming him Bernard.
No. I’ll just stick to Japanese.

I hope it has the Japanese script on Steam. DGS1+2 doesn't have it for some reason and you have to mod it in.
DGS's Japanese text was region locked because it has the name "Holmes" in it which could get them in trouble with the Doyle estate. The original, untroonylated name was just so powerful that Capcom was forced to bury it and hide it from lowly EOP eyes kek
"Herlock Sholmes" is a public domain name, though. It existed before TGAA.
The latter stories only became public domain in 2023. And the Holmes estates are sue happy gays.

Eddie Fender and Verity Gavelle are actually good. Eustace Winner sucks though.
It's supposed to be "Useless Winner", although "Ulysses" might have been a better choice.
How is it not just "Justice"? Where do people get "useless" over that from
Because that's how his dad treats him? It makes sense for their dynamic.
But you name your kid first... I guess it works both ways
the thing is we know capcom can be trusted to do good translations with this series. different names will feel shitty but it's not bad
YAAAAAS
>quick we need to remove the Capcom thread!
Frick off tendie
What is the obsession with ugly golem trannies here
I don't get why people being happy is offensive to you.
Oh wait, you're a sonygay.
That troony is freaking out
Do you go searching for literal who troons to repost for shitposting purposes?
Nobody sane or genuine actually moves like that right? At best, I'd crack a smile and laugh to myself if I see something I'd genuinely like.
ok mr robot
Tubers need to act entertaining regardless of their questionable acting skills.
>Capcom has released every AA game on a modern platform (except for the Layton crossover)
>Ghost Trick too for good measure
Bros...is it finally time?
What're the new names for all the I2 characters?
So far we know Shields (Eddie Fender), Courtney (Verity Gavelle), and Sebastian (Eustace Winner).
There are other allusions I've seen (like Nicole Swift being "Ms. Lloyd" and Horace Knightley being just shortened to "Knight").
Ah, I almost forgot. Some guy on reddit is guessing Tabby Lloyd for Nicole and that makes sense.
I guess Verity Gavelle is an alright name. It's just as much of a pun as Justine Courtney.
We don't know other than Eddie Fenders (Ray Shields) Verity Gavelle (Justine Courtney) and Eustace Winner (Debeste).

Dick Gumshoe
Confirmed so far
>Sebastian Debeste - Eustace Winner
>Raymond Shields - Eddie Fender
>Justine Courtney - Verity Gavèlle
>Di-Jun Huang - Di-Jun Wang
>Ethan Rooke - something Rook
>Nicole Swift - something Lloyd
Oh, and Ethan Rooke is just "Rook" now.
Dai Long Lang is probably staying the same because I think that just does what his son's name does (takes his Japanese name, Dairyuu Rou, and reads it in Chinese).
Are you fricking serious Capcom?
A DEFENDER
AN ACE ATTORNEY
I never cared for the fan transaltion, also AAI2 had one of the worst plots in the series, so I welcome the new canon names.
I can't decide if Eustace Winner is just a godawful change or so bad it wraps around to being good again.
Every other name I'm fine with so far.
I've already warmed up to it.
Useless Winner is fun.
I think my biggest question is what's Blaise's name going to be now that it has to end with Winner.
Burn Winner
And his middle name will be T.
I think the reason it sounds weird to me is because I've only ever associated the name Eustache with really old guys. It's like a 15 year-old named Muriel.
It highlights what was so amateurish about the name considerations in the fan patch. Why are you guys so miserable all the time
Frick you. I'm excited for the official product. I just hated the fan translation. It was a pet project by a bunch of 18 year olds weebs.
>pet project of 18 year old weebs
So, extremely soulful?
Shoo, zoomie troony.
No. The people who made the fanslation were actual trannies.
at least those weebs knew Japanese, zero people doing the localization know Japanese
>making Ace Attorney out to be a Steins Gate esque affair or something instead of the ridiculous satire it is
Ace Attorney would be improved if it were more like Steins;Gate.
I really do hope this new version changes all references to "The Goddess of Law" to "Lady Justice". The former was such an awkward translation.
They most definitely will. No way will they mess that up... right?
I think that was done to convey the tone of speech she used in the Japanese dialogue. She is supposed to have a very lofty speech pattern where she sounds like she's a divine avatar of the scales of justice.
Damn. Edgeworth and Gumshoe are getting new names?
Yes, they're Swordie and Threadsaw now.
Never got around to these. Now I'll finally learn what the deal is with that judge with big boobas.
I wonder what Wataru Shirase/Rip Lacer will get for a new name. For someone who never actually appears in-game, they have a pretty pivotal role.
Characters who never actually show up in person (such as most of the victims) tends to either get either the most mundane names or Deid Mann-tier puns
Boobies.
Please, in court we refer to those as areolae curaie.
Can we stop with the ports and get AA7?
At least GAA2 wasn't translated when the ports came out
the group that did the fan translation for GAA is still asking for help translating the 4th and 5th case after everyone abandoned it after it got an official release
There's nothing else to port (other than PLxAA, which isn't Capcom's call to make).
Creating Japanese names to make a pun in English is pretty questionable, though...
The Japanese games are also puns.
They should do an ace attorney warriors game.
im glad i never played the fan translation
how come? It has a SUH-WEET Portal reference!
