I'm fine with Zack being the outlier because that adds something interesting to the entire cast. He's the one guy who's happy and moronic like a big golden retriever. The problem is he's kept at arms length from everyone else because he was originally a walking spoiler. That kind of fricks him over because it means the happiest, chillest guy is also completely impotent to affect anything. I'm hoping the next game they fully integrate him into the cast so they can actually do something with him and have him play off the rest of the party.

At least Sephiroth is playable throughout the flashback, which was consistent with OG FFVII. Zack literally just shows up for two short sections of the marathon boss at the end.

I think that the point is that Zack doesnt let Shinra define what a soldier is and despite what shinra stands for, Zack decides to create his own soldier honor.

The Wutai war was SOLDIER's claim to fame and it was pretty smooth sailing at that point. They were basically super soldiers unleashed against a foreign country for the "crime" of not letting Shinra build a reactor there.

I think the thing that made Reno so despicable in that moment is that he never once shows an ounce of guilt for that act. He killed hundreds maybe thousands of people with all the emotional weight of making a ham sandwich. It was a job and his feelings about it end the same time the mission does.

But AC and the Remake trilogy do want Reno and Rude to be likable characters so they added scenes of them feeling guilty and rationalizing it to themselves. In addition to Wedge evacuating a bunch of the citizens. Still bad but at least Reno doesn't come off as an amoral psycho this time around

Reno even looks like a psycho in OG FFVII. I think that's why they took him out of the picture for a while and introduced Elena because he was intended to be the least sympathetic of the Turks. When Advent Children came around they flipped on this and made him more of a snarky rapscallion.

Aerith has her own bloodlust she shaves for Hojo. She admitted to Cloud she might torture him to death if given the chance. And unless Sephiroth backs down from trying to start Armageddon it ends up being moot.

Maybe in OG, but for the Remake trilogy they made Vincent understand Cloud's feelings for Aerith way earlier

And him and Cid didn't help the party in the fight not because they don't care avout the party, but because it was the time for the playable characters to shine.
There was no need for more Vincent dialogue in the end of Rebirth, especially when Cloud's behavior was so weird in the eyes of the party

Frankly I don't think there's anything to worry about and anyone who expects Tifa to continue to get shafted misunderstands what Rebirth was doing. Sephiroth has been going out of his way to drive a wedge between Cloud and Tifa and he's been largely successful. He even tried to kill her while she was inside the Weapon. He actually seems more adamant about getting Tifa out of picture than Aerith, which tells me the next game is going to revolve around them fixing their currently fractured relationship.

Aerith will have her very own chapters with Zack and Biggs as party members. You're nuts if you think she won't be featured heavily in part 3, why else would they let us save her?

The entire road up until north crater will be awkward and Cloud is out of the game for a decent chunk afterwards. I think the whole romance angle is going to play a lesser role for most of this game compared to the constant back and forth Rebirth had. That game was much more focused on the character relationships. But now there are too many main plot threads to still resolve.

I've said before that Cloud x Tifa requires Cloud to be present and put an equal amount of effort into it. He has to be a grown up for them to work. With Aerith its much easier. She does 90% of the emotional labor. Cloud can do or say the most autistic things and Aerith with smile and call him silly.

I don't know if it's a trauma bond exactly considering they grew up together and in Traces of Two Pasts she rather explicitly acknowledges her crush on Cloud when they were kids, so much so that when he left to join SOLDIER she was desperately waiting for him to write. Their relationship was more Tifa not realizing Cloud liked her back and thinking he was just aloof. Chaste as it was, from Tifa's perspective she was throwing herself at Cloud on the water tower. It seems more like the two of them were mutually attracted to each other even during the best of times but just weren't in a position to do anything about it. Tifa is notoriously shy and somewhat uncomfortable with male attention. And Cloud was always a giant ball of insecurity. Tifa wasn't going to be any more forward and Cloud was never going to pick up on the hints or take the initiative. The Nibelheim incident screwed them both up for sure but it wasn't what drew them together. In fact, it's kind of what makes it hard for them to get on the same page for a while since it's the source of most of their misunderstandings.

What's great is that Cloud is there to be Aerith's safespace when she needs to open up about her trauma. Tifa meanwhile is that for Cloud. He's just not fully there yet to be comfortable. He comes very close in Gongaga where he confesses that he feels like he's a different person.

The world makes a copy of itself in order to protect its fate. Which he explained when Cloud's consciousness moved between the worlds. Also, someone found on twitter, at the end Remake, Midgar was literally copied during the storm. The "ruins" that you were moving around during the ending fight sequences, is a copy of Midgar being raised and held afloat in the air. New theory is that the dead/injured crew members that we see in the intro of Rebirth, are the crew members we controlled and played in Remake. The "ruins" that everyone was on, crashed down and killed/injured everyone, and Cloud is missing because he's still in that weird realm. Also, notice how there are no sequence showing the crew leaving Midgar after the fight, the scene just cuts to the crew on a cliff overlooking a perfectly fine looking Midgar.

Rebirth is the second part of a trilogy and one thing that's common in fiction writing is something called the second act setback. So it's not like they can't misdirect. Really the issue I'm having isn't any specific detail but rather that Zack is INCREDIBLY underused for a character they force you to play as nearly every chapter. Like if

Sephiroth explains the multiverse with surprising clarity. You don't need Zack to understand anything. If I'm a writer there's no way I put this on paper without a bigger vision. Nojima would have to straight up hate the character to make him survive only to do frick all except change Cloud's underwear for a few weeks and hang out with Biggs.

OG he was a plot device that served his purpose. Rebirth he's a waste and pretty much has no purpose unless they do something more with him next game. I can't imagine they introduced him for a reason as thin as "Hey, Cloud, you have my permission to cuck me."

Him having something big doesn't necesarily have to involve his romantic relationship with Aerith, you know? He could have a bigger role to play concerning Sephiroth or Angeal and Genesis if the are included in the story.

This is the case for Loveless, too. People often misunderstand that play. It's not a happy story where they're saying Cloud and Aerith will reunite. It's actually a warning that if they do reunite it could lead to catastrophe. In OG FFVII Aerith being dead was the sole reason Meteor didn't ass frick the planet. Either she negotiated with the Planet to grant humanity mercy or she was powerful enough on her own to do it herself. Loveless's story, with the burning city, is asking the player if it's worth the risk. Be careful what you wish for. Will you be selfish enough to put the whole world on a collision course with the apocalypse just to reunite with someone you love? The standing question in both Remake and Rebirth isn't whether fate can be defied (it has on a couple of occasions already on a small scale). It's whether it's even a good idea to try. Sephiroth telegraphed the shit out of his attempt on Aerith's life this time around and I doubt that's coincidence. He was happy as a clam afterwards because Cloud fricking with fate plays into his hands. Defying fate is shown to be a bad thing, or at the very best an irresponsibly risky one.

Now, clearly the answer to "is it worth the risk" is going to be "yes." In the end everything is probably going to be okay. But the next game is going to go to total shit before it gets fixed.

I'm not sure Red is fully aware of the consequences though. Remember that in Shinra HQ the party was shown a heavily edited version of the OG ending that makes it look as if Meteor destroys the world anyway. This is probably Sephiroth's doing because at that point he wants to goad them into fighting the whispers and freeing him to get a second bite at the apple. So he engaged in some indirect warfare to trick them into thinking staying on course will lead to disaster. The only people who know that Aerith being dead was relevant to the world's survival is Omni-Aerith herself, Sephiroth, and current Aerith during Remake before she lost her memories.

The vision in Shinra HQ during the Cetra video has to have been Sephiroth because no other source makes sense. The only other entities with that kind of power would be omni-Aerith and the Planet, both of which are on the "let the whispers do their job" side. Given that the vision inspired the team to fight the whispers because they were under the false impression Meteor destroys the world, then it would have been counterproductive. Only Sephiroth would have shown them the vision in that specific form.

Cloud's mental state is in a much dire state than he was in OG at this point. Here, in this timeline Seph managed to mindbreak him earlier on, he kept making him doubt since Midgar, he even managed to make him doubt Tifa. Something he never did in OG.
