Agreed. He's pretty much the progenitor of those fricktards shoving spaghetti-os up the vegana and bleeding out their pussy onto canvases and calling it art. Why bother having standards or trying when you can just fart out a literal log of shit onto a plate, call it a piece about social stigmatization of some irrelevant minority, and potentially get millions for it? Sad state of affairs.

MGS doesn't get a pass. It kinda falls into the extreme end of the spectrum which gives it a campy charm. Nu Deus Ex on the other hand wants to be this overly serious conspiracy flick with social commentary

Don't get me wrong, it has its niche, but that niche basically extends as far as Kojima's wacky cartoon brain overlayed on top of what are otherwise seriously portrayed events. And I'll say Kojima has a decent eye for cinematography in cutscenes, which is highly lacking in the industry. Everything else MGS does is done better in other games that don't get (and shouldn't) a constant unending circlejerk like the MGS series.

You should watch the art director's interviews if you haven't. He really doesn't know what he's doing as far as themes go. He's clearly putting visual metaphors everywhere because he's learned visual metaphors are deep and not because he wants to communicate something. There are visual metaphors linking Adam to Icarus everywhere, except there's nothing in the story suggesting Adam is suffering from hubris that will lead to his downfall. On the contrary, he's constantly telling us how he "didn't ask for this" and how he wants to be careful with his powers.

      Anonymous

Icarus didn't ask for wings to fly to the sun, he got them though, and that's what the metaphor is for.

i agree with you on that, but my point was that while HR has its issues, its lack of subtlety shouldnt be a sticking point when the original game had just as much if not more on the nose shit.

Oh yeah I'm not really one to get annoyed at visual symbolism, even if it's obvious by my standard. Even discarding any thematic meaning, the OP image is still visually interesting from the high contrast of the background lights against Adam's darkened appearance. As long as a composed image is still meaningful or it looks cool then I don't see a big deal.

I was never largely turned off by the "techno Renaissance" aesthetic in the Jensen games, but I still prefer the grounded look of Deus Ex 1 relative to 2000. A fresh start means new people get to come in with their own ideas and I'm interested to see what they come up with.

It's a bit sad, but Deus Ex is a series that I think would benefit hugely from some kind of a reboot every couple games or so. In a franchise about global conspiracies and shit you can only do so many sequels before the story gets completely lost up it's ass trying to have everything both make sense and deliver new mysteries each game.

i came to this thread expecting people to post examples of other games failing at being subtle or symbolism, but is just people chimping out about MGS and Kojumbo.

I've read this post so many times. Subtle as to what? nothing fricking happens in the game, even then last game it was just about the idea of him getting burned. Does he ever get burned by truth or his own augments in a way that isnt overly artsy? it just seems like a hapless metaphor to allude to some idea of being woke.

The black/gold color scheme that literally every building seems to use in Human Revolution onwards is a subtle reference to ancarcho capitalism
