getting brutally mogged by newer UMPCs
The amazing fact, fact, is that it isn't
The Phoenix Point family is certainly more powerful, but having 8 CPU cores to balance against the IGP really holds back GPU clocks when there is sustained load on each.
Whats also incredible is that the lower binnings of the Phoenix Point family retain over 50% of the performance despite having only 1/3 of the CU. Power scaling is everything, and Van Gogh was purpose built for this lower TDP envelope, Phoenix was not.
Some of the Strix Point family launching later should handedly trounce Van Gogh, but you won't see this in any handheld for quite some time

20w and under, especially 15w and under, Van Gogh in the Deck is that absolute best chip in any handheld right now..

I'm honestly worried if AMD can even produce another low-TDP miracle chip for Valve. Do we have any new hardware leaks about what new silicon might be on the horizon?

        Anonymous

They can. Even smaller more power efficient chips are already underway.

Quick rundown? Do we have some theoretical benchmarks on this?

        Anonymous

They do have a smaller die quad core chip, Phoenix 2, intended for tablets and Chromebooks. There will be a Zen5/RDNA3.5 successor to this in the Strix Point family also. Strix is actually quite a wide gamut now instead of taking one die and binning it to fit different power envelopes.

Quick rundown? Do we have some theoretical benchmarks on this?

Strix Point gets unveils later this year
Brand new CPU arch, more advanced packaging, newer process

That might be the case then. Does it crash because the SD's read/write speeds are too slow?

Decky/Powertools used to make my Deck crash multiple times a day. This was over a year ago though.

If it crashes so much, even when playing youtube videos, you might need to RMA, it may be defective.

I just leave plugged into my TV. The Steam Deck basically makes having a console (that isn't the Nintendo Switch) redundant, especially considering I can play most of my entire Steam library and every console game before 7th gen, and some games after that. Switch is still more portable though.

      Anonymous

      >that isn't the Nintendo Switch
Nice try tendie but this shit is completely replaced by a Deck

        Anonymous

I am no tendie. For long trips that last 2+ weeks in places with plentiful access to outlets, Steam Deck trumps Switch in every regard. But for short trips that last less than a day to a week and leave me stuck inside a car/plane, the Switch fulfills its niche for killing time with bing bing wahoo. However, if I'm on a holiday for a week, I'd rather take a Switch because it fits in a bag easier and is less power hungry. Sometimes I take a cheap backbone controller and play emulated PSP games instead of a Switch.

Thats pretty much why I like the Deck. I always traveled with a laptop, not for work, but to play games while I'm in the hotel as hotel TV sucks. The laptop plus controller combo isn't great while you're laying in bed. A handheld UMPC style device is perfect for that. I can sit in my rocking chair at home and use it with absolute comfort, can spread out on my couch, my bed at home, I can use it anywhere, have all the games I really want to play

How did you manage to interpret that from any of the posts in the thread? Also Steam Deck IS the poorgay's UMPC. 600 quid for OLED model with 1TB storage (provided storage is installed manually) is probably the best price on the market. If you're poor just buy the 256gb LCD and install your own storage for a grand total 400-500 which is on par with a PS5.

Its so weird because while I would love a more powerful Steam Deck, I actually dont really play any graphically intense games on my PC.

Like I still see people b***hing about the "Anti-Cheat Doesn't work"... 90% of the Anti-Cheat games are Multiplayer FPS games.... You seriously want to go against M/K players with a controller? Sure you can connect a M/K to it and Dock it to a monitor. But at that point why don't you use an actual PC?
