Neopets did a ton of good preparing me for buying collectors editions online and the like. I see other people get furious and blame "bots" anytime something goes on sale and they don't get it, and all i can think is "lol, there are millions of people trying to buy this shit, anyone who ever tried to get anything in the neopets lost and found knows how fast this shit can move".
After the death of flash there's barely anything to do anymore, and even before that the site never did anything new. I didn't leave neopets, neopets left me.

I got a monthly Top 3 trophy for Warf Rescue Team one month. If you were top 3 at any point during the month it gave you a trophy, so the strat back then was to get a great score and hit submit during the exact moment the new month started.
All my game trophies were accidental, but I would go out of my way to try and get a golden one so it'd look better.
I'm particularly proud of the Jumpin' Gem Heist one tho, I remember getting while trying to beat AAA in Daily Dare.
That was the one time the lag actually helped me, because I would always get enough time to think of the perfect order to catch the gems.
AFAIK you just need a browser with flash support and they still work. An old chrome version you use only for neopets is probably safest.

To be fair the internet landscape just isn't the same as it was back then. Even if neopets was run by competent people it'd still get tossed out of the way by social media and sillicon valley-approved websites.
The only way neopets could've survived is by changing completely, it'd have to become a full-fledged online videogame that can be accessed both through a phone and your computer, and they'd have to update the game constantly to maintain their popularity.
Neopets is a relic of an internet era that worked differently, if it was launched today nobody would care.

I liked Mr Insane’s games. He made a lot of turn based games, I don’t think those count as flash but I really enjoyed Neoquest and Invasion of Meridell. I loved NQ so much that I was almost one of the first people to beat it, it was ‘99 or 2000 but they gave exclusive prizes for first people to beat them. but I have a feeling some Japanese players stayed up for a week straight to beat it. Those actually got me into Dragon Quest and Fire Emblem.
But for actual flash games, Hannah and the Pirate/Ice caves. I enjoyed those so much I’d beat the entire game in a sitting, deathless, and get gold trophies. Also that one with the Drake going through the dungeon castle where blood would pour on you, I forget the name.

I don't really have much of a goal now though, all my pets are fancy and cool and I can't be fricked to make a new one and get the lab to zap it into the Robot I wanted. Wanted a Pofew but it's too expensive and rose while I gathered funds.
I remember they added a lupe gym for about 6 months at one point, then removed access to it because it was too powerful. Imagine getting free levels every day except you don't need to use codestones to do so. But if you knew the link you could still visit it, I was a dumb kid that didn't bookmark it, instead there was a player profile that had the link so I would always go through his page to reach the gym.
Frick that's another thing that made neopets so good, you could customize your own page in html. That kind of thing probably got a lot of kids interested in coding.
It could use some more quality of life stuff but other than that it's got a lot of passion behind it and they show that passion from beginning to end. It's a great time.

The mutants generally don't wear much anyway, just the amulet and tentacles. Their looks generally lend themselves to looking better while not covered so I've avoided cloaks or armor.

I remember how into Neopets I was as a kid, I collected the cards and had stuffed animals. Then right around the time I started questioning my faith, Neopets teams up with the Golden Compass for crossover advertising. Being the dumb moron that I was, I dropped Neopets hard, got rid of all my merch, and developed a strong hate for it. Today I don't believe in God, and I'll never get my Neopets back.

Trophies were fun to collect. This is my account from maybe -04 to -08, I played since like '99, but my oldest accounts got frozen for inactivity but now Iogin once a year.
I was actually a writegay and artist homosexual, so I kept getting into the Neopian Times. I even did Neovision when it came out (it was their knockoff YouTube for a year), I made an animated short that they even used bits of on TV. I think that's my rarest trophy because Neovision was only a thing for a year.
I did whatever site plots there were, but my neopet only had stats in the low hundreds, mid-tier I'd say. It was sad because when I began training my pet seriously they barely did site plots, I remember with old site plots the entire site would go down from all the people fighting in the battledome for Maraqua's and Meridell's plots. Inflation kept getting worse and worse to buy those stones for training your pet.
Games were fun though. I had the trophies for HATIC, HATPC, Fyora's Caves, Escape from Meridell Castle which were all pretty similar platformers. I still regret that I only had bronze and silvers, but as an adult who's done programming now, I realized that having the games window open for too long resulted in you not being able to submit your score. I'd get really good runs on those games to get 1st each month, but like 80% of the time the score wouldn't submit because the game window was open for more than say 5 hours.
I also loved NeoQuest 1 & 2, I'd even get paid by people to play the game on their account so that they'd have the trophy and avatars. Often I'd just wake up Saturday morning, watch Shaolin Showdown in the background and get the trophy and avatars for a guild friend. Same with Invasion of Meridell, I love SRPGs.
NeoQuest was so amazing though. It brought me into JRPGs. I liked NQ2 too, it refined everything that NQ1 did but man the original still had its charm too and 1 felt like an actual apocalyptic world that was all dead and you were picking up the pieces. 2 had a weird plot twist, but was still fun. I mean, who really did play them for the story?
Still, I liked actually talking to all the NPCs and that's how I figured out where to go, and I enjoyed solving the puzzles even though everyone else enjoyed getting maps and being spoonfed. The 4 faeries were an amazing boss fight in NQ2 though, I love it when a JRPG puts a counter party to fight you.

NQ1 didn't give battledome weapon rewards like 2 did so people barely played it when NQ2 came out, and NQ1 was made in 2000 before neopoints inflation so they'd give you like 10k or 100k NP for beating the game.
Playing NQ1 on insane mode was pretty scary at times, you only have 1 party member and you can actually get stunlocked by some enemies and bosses unlike NQ2 that gets very easy past the first world with exception of the 4 faeries boss.
A shame all the flash animations are now gone, but someone archived them on YouTube.

They do help sometimes, just very slowly. My account got hacked and I lost millions of neopoints. A few months later, they wrote me that the issues was fixed and I did, indeed, get my points returned to me.
The worst part is that there was rampant favoritism. So the richest people in NeoPets could do whatever and always have their account safe. I get it from their point of view, I bet Featheralley, Munsterpoo, etc all got millions of hacking attempts each day and this was before two factor authentication so they had to pay close attention to them. But man were they useless for everyone else. The only time they helped is if you bought NeoPets Premium.

I always thought this was a great system that should've been used more in online multiplayer games like MMOs. Have they had any more of these events since 2007ish? They had one in the past couple years. It was called The Wraith Resurgence and had you fight against wraiths and a corrupted faerie (suspiciously Chinese-oriented right after a Chinese company bought the website, but it didn't impact the event quality). Haven't really had anything since.

most of the pets are composed of simple shapes to make them easy for kids to process visually, like the Kiko or Aisha, or are based on very normal things, like the Lupe. Also, use gradients and MS paint to draw items.
The one thing that's still great about Neopets is the detail of every item and the little flavor text they all have. It stirs the imagination in a fun way, especially with the food items (be they delicious or disgusting)

never submitted art to it, I wasn't actually allowed to make an account as a kid because my mom thought they were sending viruses through the mail (I suspect she clicked a phishing/malicious mail she thought was the neopets one) so I kind of just stared longingly at login-only pages and enjoyed the flash games and non-login pages.

You know, a lot of us were young at the time, so you'd think more people would want to by edgy and side with Darigan. But I also think the enemies were not even in the Battledome too for some reason. I remember fighting the Meridell Battledome enemies were harder than the Darigan Battledome enemies, like the peasant militia mob was really annoying to fight. But maybe my kid brain was mis-remembering.
That brought back so many memories. I didn't play long enough to see the Obelisk, but this EXACT same thing happened during the HATIC plot in like maybe '03, they actually had an enemy in the war that would give your Neopet a sickness and for some reason it was an semi-obscure one and the war made the medicine inflate to millions of neopoints. I forget if they ever fixed it but man they were stupid. A shame the new team also made the same mistake.

I got a monthly Top 3 trophy for Warf Rescue Team one month. If you were top 3 at any point during the month it gave you a trophy, so the strat back then was to get a great score and hit submit during the exact moment the new month started.
All my game trophies were accidental, but I would go out of my way to try and get a golden one so it'd look better.
I'm particularly proud of the Jumpin' Gem Heist one tho, I remember getting while trying to beat AAA in Daily Dare.

He was originally green, and later Faerie for a while because of the Faeries' Ruin event, until I finally got enough money for the Halloween Paint Brush I wanted since the beginning.
Also his name is literally Ninja so I felt like he just had to have Ninja clothes.
Pic related was originally green, then later Christmas, then Tyrannian, which I didn't like much so I was thinking of painting him either Royal or Magma, I ended up choosing the latter.
Now this guy was adopted, and he was originally a blue Nimmo, and then electric I believe.
I don't remember much after that tho, because he became my lab rat once I got acces to the lab, he went through many colors and species (he was even a girl for a while), but eventually got turned into a Steampunk Nimmo.
He's also my designated Battledome Neopet because of all the stat boosts he got from the lab.
This guy is the youngest one of my pets, and I originally just made him cause I wanted one of them limited edition pets, so I didn't care much for him, but he's grown on me.
He was originally blue, then buscuit, then pirate, and now he's disco, mainly to add a bit of color variety to my Neopets, who all had dark or muddy colors back then.
And finally, this is technically not "my" Neopet, she was my sister's Neopet, but she hasn't touched the site in fricking years, so I just "adopted" her from my sister's account.
She was originally red I believe, but I remembered my sister always saying she wanted to paint her Usuki, so that's exactly what I did.

I liked Mr Insane’s games. He made a lot of turn based games, I don’t think those count as flash but I really enjoyed Neoquest and Invasion of Meridell. I loved NQ so much that I was almost one of the first people to beat it, it was ‘99 or 2000 but they gave exclusive prizes for first people to beat them. but I have a feeling some Japanese players stayed up for a week straight to beat it. Those actually got me into Dragon Quest and Fire Emblem.
But for actual flash games, Hannah and the Pirate/Ice caves. I enjoyed those so much I’d beat the entire game in a sitting, deathless, and get gold trophies. Also that one with the Drake going through the dungeon castle where blood would pour on you, I forget the name.

It's an easy explanation actually, the game got taken over by scientologists, then viacom, then some chinese company. Neopets never stood a chance because it was never owned by competent people.

The healing shop faerie, soup kitchen faerie and snow faerie were among the ones I loved as a kid and I remember I wanted to live in the mountain with the snow faerie. Mind you I'm from a third world permahot place. I have never seen snow in my life and I'd most likely have a hard time in the cold. But I told myself I'd do it out of love.

I don't really have much of a goal now though, all my pets are fancy and cool and I can't be fricked to make a new one and get the lab to zap it into the Robot I wanted. Wanted a Pofew but it's too expensive and rose while I gathered funds.
I remember they added a lupe gym for about 6 months at one point, then removed access to it because it was too powerful. Imagine getting free levels every day except you don't need to use codestones to do so. But if you knew the link you could still visit it, I was a dumb kid that didn't bookmark it, instead there was a player profile that had the link so I would always go through his page to reach the gym.
Frick that's another thing that made neopets so good, you could customize your own page in html. That kind of thing probably got a lot of kids interested in coding.

The mutants generally don't wear much anyway, just the amulet and tentacles. Their looks generally lend themselves to looking better while not covered so I've avoided cloaks or armor.

I remember how into Neopets I was as a kid, I collected the cards and had stuffed animals. Then right around the time I started questioning my faith, Neopets teams up with the Golden Compass for crossover advertising. Being the dumb moron that I was, I dropped Neopets hard, got rid of all my merch, and developed a strong hate for it. Today I don't believe in God, and I'll never get my Neopets back.
I'm still religious and I never felt any need to ditch my Neopets stuff when that went on. It took a lot to get them and there was no way to replace them. Probably because I hoard shit though (not TLC tier but still reluctant to trash neat things).
I remember the pastor hated Pokemon and I liked that too. Felt bad for his kid.

Trophies were fun to collect. This is my account from maybe -04 to -08, I played since like '99, but my oldest accounts got frozen for inactivity but now Iogin once a year.
I was actually a writegay and artist homosexual, so I kept getting into the Neopian Times. I even did Neovision when it came out (it was their knockoff YouTube for a year), I made an animated short that they even used bits of on TV. I think that's my rarest trophy because Neovision was only a thing for a year.
I did whatever site plots there were, but my neopet only had stats in the low hundreds, mid-tier I'd say. It was sad because when I began training my pet seriously they barely did site plots, I remember with old site plots the entire site would go down from all the people fighting in the battledome for Maraqua's and Meridell's plots. Inflation kept getting worse and worse to buy those stones for training your pet.
Games were fun though. I had the trophies for HATIC, HATPC, Fyora's Caves, Escape from Meridell Castle which were all pretty similar platformers. I still regret that I only had bronze and silvers, but as an adult who's done programming now, I realized that having the games window open for too long resulted in you not being able to submit your score. I'd get really good runs on those games to get 1st each month, but like 80% of the time the score wouldn't submit because the game window was open for more than say 5 hours.
I also loved NeoQuest 1 & 2, I'd even get paid by people to play the game on their account so that they'd have the trophy and avatars. Often I'd just wake up Saturday morning, watch Shaolin Showdown in the background and get the trophy and avatars for a guild friend. Same with Invasion of Meridell, I love SRPGs.

NeoQuest was so amazing though. It brought me into JRPGs. I liked NQ2 too, it refined everything that NQ1 did but man the original still had its charm too and 1 felt like an actual apocalyptic world that was all dead and you were picking up the pieces. 2 had a weird plot twist, but was still fun. I mean, who really did play them for the story?
Still, I liked actually talking to all the NPCs and that's how I figured out where to go, and I enjoyed solving the puzzles even though everyone else enjoyed getting maps and being spoonfed. The 4 faeries were an amazing boss fight in NQ2 though, I love it when a JRPG puts a counter party to fight you.
Pic related. I'm probably one of maybe a few thousand people to beat NQ1 3 times to face the third final boss. NQ1 didn't give battledome weapon rewards like 2 did so people barely played it when NQ2 came out, and NQ1 was made in 2000 before neopoints inflation so they'd give you like 10k or 100k NP for beating the game.
Playing NQ1 on insane mode was pretty scary at times, you only have 1 party member and you can actually get stunlocked by some enemies and bosses unlike NQ2 that gets very easy past the first world with exception of the 4 faeries boss.
A shame all the flash animations are now gone, but someone archived them on YouTube.

I still think about that plot twist nearly 20 years later. I feel like it was inspired by A Maze of Death by Philip K Dick because that book involves people asleep during a deep-space trip play 'death games' in VR as a way to cure the boredom which isn't exactly the same but somewhat similar.
I wish Neoquest 1 and 2 ever got flash ports or something.

They do help sometimes, just very slowly. My account got hacked and I lost millions of neopoints. A few months later, they wrote me that the issues was fixed and I did, indeed, get my points returned to me.
The worst part is that there was rampant favoritism. So the richest people in NeoPets could do whatever and always have their account safe. I get it from their point of view, I bet Featheralley, Munsterpoo, etc all got millions of hacking attempts each day and this was before two factor authentication so they had to pay close attention to them. But man were they useless for everyone else. The only time they helped is if you bought NeoPets Premium.

They had one in the past couple years. It was called The Wraith Resurgence and had you fight against wraiths and a corrupted faerie (suspiciously Chinese-oriented right after a Chinese company bought the website, but it didn't impact the event quality). Haven't really had anything since.

most of the pets are composed of simple shapes to make them easy for kids to process visually, like the Kiko or Aisha, or are based on very normal things, like the Lupe. Also, use gradients and MS paint to draw items.
The one thing that's still great about Neopets is the detail of every item and the little flavor text they all have. It stirs the imagination in a fun way, especially with the food items (be they delicious or disgusting)
I would say collecting and the digital player-run economy is what keeps a fair portion of people playing.

never submitted art to it, I wasn't actually allowed to make an account as a kid because my mom thought they were sending viruses through the mail (I suspect she clicked a phishing/malicious mail she thought was the neopets one) so I kind of just stared longingly at login-only pages and enjoyed the flash games and non-login pages.
When I finally got to make an account I just never thought about sending art in because the art section of the community was frozen for a very long time.

The website itself is the mobile version, they changed the interface so you could browse it on your phone.

You know, a lot of us were young at the time, so you'd think more people would want to by edgy and side with Darigan. But I also think the enemies were not even in the Battledome too for some reason. I remember fighting the Meridell Battledome enemies were harder than the Darigan Battledome enemies, like the peasant militia mob was really annoying to fight. But maybe my kid brain was mis-remembering.

That brought back so many memories. I didn't play long enough to see the Obelisk, but this EXACT same thing happened during the HATIC plot in like maybe '03, they actually had an enemy in the war that would give your Neopet a sickness and for some reason it was an semi-obscure one and the war made the medicine inflate to millions of neopoints. I forget if they ever fixed it but man they were stupid. A shame the new team also made the same mistake.
