I dunno but the steam sale fricking destroyed epic sale. Way better discounts without even trying.

        Anonymous

tl;dr, valve has a policy where if you sell it on steam, you cant sell it elsewhere for cheaper, so that ea games and anyone else with a store front (coughtimmycough) doesnt just put their games on steam for 100$ and mention on the store page its only 60$ on their own website.

strangely, instead of matching the prices, egs decided for whatever reason to just come close. so everything egs is selling discounted, is discounted and cheaper on steam. egs is calling steam a monopoly, while voluntarily charging its own users more for the same games.

That policy does not apply to other platforms, only to alternate storefronts which sell steam keys, like humble bundle.

This is true but EGS is a complete dogshit competition. Free games and exclusives aren't going to save them when simple stuff like a cart feature take literal years to get added. They need to actually do better or someone else needs to put their foot in the ring.

The point of having a cart is to bundle all the games you're getting in one purchase. Cause otherwise you'll have your card getting several charges all within a few minutes, which can and did result in the card getting locked down until you call you bank to unlock it.

It's also just like, imagine a grocery store without any carts or baskets. Sure, you're not getting that much, but they can't even provide one of the basic, universal services all the other stores can? That's just a bad look.

EGS can't do better, because they are fundamentally approaching this from a perspective that you, as a game buyer, don't understand.
EGS is considering the game developers and publishers their customers, not you. You're just a product which they are trying to stock up on to sell to the publishers and developers.

          >Reduce prices
That's not something Steam can do very much,it comes down to the publishers who allow them to discount things or not. Steam did come up with the whole modern "sale is not just the shitty old stuff from years ago on ashelf at GameStop, but instead massive saving on new, recently released, oreven pre-launchedtitles" dynamic.
          >Improve their services
They've been doing that in some of the only ways that actually benefit users compared to nearly every other vendor . All their FOSS stuff, Linux support, Community features, Workshop, Guides etc... are all added not because they were afraid of some competitor as most 1st or 3rd party vendors weren't even fricking trying to do anything be except "We've got the games, you'll pay. Frick the rest".

Everything timmy has done on the other side has been against this, against players, adding to lock-in, lack of features, proprietary bullshit, outright hate for FOSS and Linux simply because Steam supports them and more; I haven't even gotten to the damage of Fortnite and the shitty stuff with Unreal Engine or EasyAntiCheat - and then he blamed everyone else.
          >WAAAAA Apple and Google are being unfair that I can't use their store to market my stuff and then avoid following their rules
          >WAAAAH Steam is a meanie bo beanie and people actually want to use their store and its not fair!
          >WAHHHH Sony is the reason we can't lower prices the way we claimed even though they just gave us a just frickload of investment to save our ass as Tencent decided to tell us to frick off

Every time he cries and blames someone else he gets smacked down in the courts and rightly so. Frick him sideways for everything he has brought to PC gaming since the Epic Store . Its sad, Epic COULD have focused on their engine and made bank supporting everyone on everyplatform but the greed ruined it.

            Anonymous

            >simply because Steam supports them
This is the funniest fricking part. I love watching Epic do things based purely on the contrarianism of seeing Valve not do it under the impression they're cornering a market that Steam isn't doing and it just turns out to be fricking terrible business, you can take one fricking look at the blockchain/NFT games that are on EGS, remember that one of the biggest 'features' of EGS was that it was curated and was supposed to have quality control so cheap asset flips and literal scams didn't end up on the platform, and laugh.

              Anonymous

Exactly. Oldgays from the Unreal Tournament era may have remembered how Epic COULD have spent their time basically focused on their engine, licensed it to everyone on every platform, and not bothered to frick around with trying to run a store. They would have been beloved if they did it and supported it well - hell they even made the support for UE4 and 5 for Linux (and things like Easy Anti Cheat) LESS capablesimply because of their sour grapes (admittedly, EAC didn't work at all with Proton/Wine until Valve basically stomped over and convinced them that so many of their license holders would frick off if they didn't bother and even then they couldn't just made it work, they had to have a parting tantrum where the dev needs to flick a specific "do not freak out on Proton/Wine" flag for the game so they could claim that developers were not doing it etc.

Even during the Fortnite years they could have released it on Steam (and iOS, and Android) and anywhere else and made it clear that people would throw money at them for that god awful abortion (putting aside the battle royale garbage , FOMO, expensive skins, exclusive battle passes etc) and they'd get users from every store or platform onboard, free advertising etc.... but no, their greed meant they couldn't see the millions actually coming in, all they could fixate on was "but but what if we got all of them to only download through our site and we didn't need to give a cut to anyone else!" which has shot them in the dick in multiple ways. Its stupidity of the highest order thanks to always thinking the invisible line could go up more.

They were initially against it, but the second Valve comes out with a public statement announcing a ban on crypto games, Timmy Tencent smells an opportunity to be the contrarian option for "cool guy points" or whatever and slithers out of the woodwork to immediately have Epic make a counter-announcement that crypto games are hip and cool and welcome on their store.

The funniest part about all of these PC storefronts is that for their entire existence, Steam has done nothing in response to them. Everything Steam does is because the knuckleheads at Valve wanted to.

Steam has never actually been a monopoly. Valve has been in healthy competition with piracy from day 1.

Unreal, besides being arguably the most advanced engine on the market, is one of the best. Indiegays and small studios are just too dumb to use C++ which can be up to 20x faster in tight micro workloads than blueprints. Depending on how CPU bottlenecked your hardware and how intensive your game logic is a pure C++ game implementation can be anywhere from 20% to 200% faster in practice. That said Fortnite runs great and they still use blueprints

I am not disagreeing with you on that at all I am just saying If he put as much effort into making his storefront good as he did unreal maybe people would give a shit about his platform. >Fortnite runs great and they still use blueprints
That's because UE since 4 is built heavily around blueprints, and the best scenario is a mix of C++ and blueprints. While some tasks can only really be done with C++ or are better with it, blueprints really won't be a major bottleneck unless your moronic. Blueprints are much faster to work with and the conversion to C++ doesn't provide a lot of uplift on a good number of things for the amount of work you put in.

      >Why does he MONOPOLIZE games to his store with exclusivity deals?
      >Why does he make reviews opt in? "Professional" publications who have demonstrated in the past to be untrustworthy have a monopoly on reviews without user reviews.
      >Why does he want to show up now, once valve already took a risk and built a PC market, after previously saying that PC and that consoles are better?
      >Why does he not acknowledge GOG? He clearly knows about itch io since epic bought itchio, which by the way, buying itch is pretty monopolistic.
      Most of all
      >Why do we have to hear epic shills trying to FUD steam forever till the end of time even though people repeatedly state the reasons they won't go to epic and use steam/GOG instead only to get ignored? He sure is acting like a monopoly does, where they think their money wiener is big enough now to ignore user feedback, after all, "Publishers decide the store wars, not customers" - Tim's own words.
Nobody's buying it, both literally and figuratively, that's why there's articles stating that even with fortnite money epic is not profitable. Maybe if they spent time improving their service instead of paying shills to whine on Ganker they'd get somewhere.

He has a point. Issue is however that communism ultimately leads to zero property rights and a failure to respect skilled labor over basic labor (given the labor value theory).
He isn't wrong tho, when he says (I preface):
        >"if the idiots at the helm had slightly more strategy or slightly leas contempt for the lives they stripmine, they could've kept the grift going indefinitely ".
        ..and he isn't wrong.
This is the thing about the entire system, half of em are morons and the other half are too greedy.
They could've milked this cow for centuries, moved us into the stars and found more resources to milk us for, but they couldn't slow it down even a tiny bit.
And frankly, I think that was all Trump ever tried to do/point out, telling them " hey morons, stop taking all the cookies, these stupid plebs are happy if you leave them 1 cookie each, but you want all the cookies for yourselves".

I agree, its a farce to own land, because you dont, and this is an issue.
Spend a decade like i have building and creating value to the land i bought, which was originally an empty overgrown worthless plot that now has a house, a barn, plowed fields and can support a flock of chickens and small herd of livestock.
I did all of that. they want more money from me now because I made it worth more.
            fricking greedy Black folk.

            >zero property rights

ground tax should be illegal, but it's the way to force you into the system. Even if you grow and make your own food, you still have to pay "taxes", which is literlly robbery

                Anonymous

it is. and you cant get off the grid cuz youre forced to pay in dollars.
So you always have to interact with their israeli system.
ive said a compromise on land taxes would be to allow the govt to place a lien on property for unpaid taxes if you ever sell or if it moves out of the direct family.
but taking land/property for unpaid taxes is evil and is literal robbery as you said.

It's insane, i miss a year and im at risk of losing EVERYTHING ive done here. And they wont even give me the equity I do have once they've sold the property to recoup the taxes they claim i owe

I prefer to make one out of the corpse of the modern USA. There should universal deductions on property taxes for residential properties. The only tax that is less of a theft is sales tax and even then there must be exemption on essentials like foodstuffs and medical care.

If he likes socialism so much, then he would not mind if the government dictated content on video games, holds exclusive say on categorization, and bans games that are denied categorization similar to Australia. Perhaps he should support the government dictating the content of his shitty webcomics that have gone downhill over the past 11 or 12 years.
Also, those other countries appeal to tourists and third world Black and Brown invaders while throwing more of their own populations under the bus with "hate speech" policies and back of the line social welfare. Canada now encourages doctors to have patients commit toaster in bathtub.

What is the communist solution to prevent anyone from ever getting fired from their job again?

          Anonymous

I'm pretty sure you really don't care about the answer but the issue isn't "nobody will ever get fired ever again"but rather the system wouldn't have vested interest in firing people so that you could cook the books in a way that benefits only exec management and those at the top , who don't have to deal with any of the ramifications of their decisions.

None of this is necessarily "communist" either , but on the basest level of socialism (meaning workers owning and controlling the means of production ) would be running the company as a co-op, everyone would get to vote on certain policies and governance, instead of a bunch of external shareholders who bought their way in with money (ie this is why we have a system the values capital more than labor, a major issue with pretty much everything described as "globohomo") who dont' give two fricks about anything but return of investment, would certainly prevent the issue described.

Epic got rid of shit like Bandcamp, Songtradr and Superawesome. A bunch of shitty companies they never should've bought in the first place.

Bandcamp is really good but you're right that Epic had no business in buying them up

              Anonymous

The issue is that had they not been picked up by Epic for this bullshit, they may have been able to thrive elsewhere. Timmy deciding to pick up all these subsidiaries to create a kabuki play for investors even if they do nothing to improve the core business is the problem. His failure isn't being born by the execs and investors of Epic, but of all the workers at Bandcamp and wherever else that were absorbed. Timmy doesn't have to answer for his bad decisisons, he still gets his birthday with eminem, everyone else has to find new jobs because frick them.

This is the the issue with so much business now and including in the games industry. Some execs make shitty decisions, load up a game with shitty by the numbers fad chasing bullshit and ensure its mediocre and releases long before it was tested propery and content was finished, jammed it full of Denuvo licenses andlootboxes etc Do they , after releases come in say "gee, we really fricked that up. Look, no end of quarter bonuses to the board and upper management. We can't afford it and we made a shitty bet, lets learn from it?" No, of course not they say "Oh we have no idea why Game X didn't connnect with its audience! The team that worked on the game and did what we demanded we do and every change we made,we'll just fire em because it "didn't meet expectations". We still get ourbonuses of course. Just as well, some of them were asking for raises after being here for years anyway. We can just hire new ones, or bring the old ones back at 'adjusted' salaries if they're willing when we recruit for the next project. Now, who's coming to my birthday party? Bring coke to do off Nikki Minaj's ass!"

                Anonymous

Modern western companies pay their execs mostly in stock options specifically to address this issue by tying the success of the company to executive bottom lines. The people at the bottom have to find new jobs, yeah, but their savings accounts don't take a hit from these decisions. If the company has good governance policies, execs feel the hit.

Epic got BandCamp and Songtradr for their upcoming Rock Band mode in Fortnite, people are speculating they are gonna release DIY instruments in a confirmed collab with Lego, but since they also bought Harmonix (Rock Band creators) they chopped Songtrdr and Bandcamp
For Superawesome, Timmy wanted Roblox success with their current Roblox mode in Fortnite, but they got skibdi toilet tycoon maps instead.

gaben understands that he is competing directly with piracy. the second steam becomes an inconvenience people will just switch to piracy

What's funny is Steam and Gaben were genuinely starting to flag in PR for awhile. And yet Epic ended up completely catalyzing a bunch of people to go "well hang on, actually Steam, its service, and its policies are pretty great." Literally just making people realize how bad things could be. Now there's a bunch of people spreading the Gospel of Steam, more energized to highlight what they like and proselytize those things to others, informing them of the misconceptions and unsubstantiated critiques being peddled. No one was doing this before, but now by negative example, people feel compelled to defend Steam.

I even think it was precisely that perception of dissatisfaction with Steam and Valve that was the foundation for the entire EGS debacle. You had all these people talking about how Valve doesn't do anything, how Steam is just coasting, how they have Nazis in their forums, how all these great games are being drowned out by trash. This made Epic think they could just dump a bunch of money to muscle their way in with a halfbaked product that justified its deficiencies by spinning them as positives, and rake in the easy money. After all, it's not like Valve actually has to do anything to make money on Steam. How hard could it be?

nonsense. you want public opinion next to the product the publishers are trying to sell you. Do you really think that the majority of paypigs are going to go look for reviews on another site? no, frick no. paypigs just see something and buy it which is why epig is fricking garbage and the only reason it exists is to cater to publishers who don't want any negativity next to their product. Steam reviews don't even stop people from buying games otherwise EA and Activision wouldn't put their games on there. Every garbage IP they have like NBA or FIFA has mostly negative reviews but there's 500k reviews. which means millions of people bought the game. Epig is just that disingenuous.

It is the other way around.

Most people having issues on Linux is because of either using old distro or because they use Nvidia outside of Nvidia's intended use case.

Does anyone know how much money Timmy spent on just Kingdom Hearts exclusivity on his Chinese Epic Store? That IP isn't cheap and they negotiated with the minor demon known as Disney suits. Nintendo couldn't even get Donald, Goofy, and Mickey in Smash Ultimate as minor cameos and yet Timmy got all the Kingdom Hearts PS3 HD ports and the 3rd game on EGS. And it still isn't on Steam or Microsoft PC Store. Do any of you know how insane that is? Even FF7Remake PS4 was ported to PC as a timed exclusive on EGS for about a year then Steam got it, meanwhile Kingdom Hearts PC isn't on Steam well over a year.

That is a lot of fricking money SquareEnix and Disney got to block its release on Steam. Just how fricking much and why Kingdom Hearts out of all was that Timmy's line in the sand against Gabe. I'll never install Epic Chinese Store but I must kneel at the caliber of money Timmy is putting out to block games off Steam.

Apparently they paid something like $250 million for the KH3 exclusivity deal, Borderlands 3 also costed them an arm and a leg for exclusivity too. It's kind of mindblowing just much they threw away on those deals.

Quarter of a billion isn't anything to scoff at. I don't actually know how much KH3 would've sold on steam but to the Square suits I don't blame them for taking the deal. Who wouldn't turn down an easy 250 MILLION? Even if it sells like shit on pc who cares? They'll still sell their copies on the playstation anyway

Squee has a special relationship with epig because they use Unreal for a lot of their games. I'm sure part of that agreement has to do with Squee not having to pay their 10% to unreal. That's good for investors. but Kingdom Hearts was a sham because they wanted like 70 dollars for each of the three games and it was cracked within an hour of release. There is no fricking way Squee made much money off of that, which they probably knew beforehand. Aside from the millions they gave Squee, there must have been something else in the deal. It makes you wonder if Kingdom Hearts is the first forever exclusive. I've been thinking they would try it at some point.

because Valve (steam) tos for developers prohibits having a regular price cheaper elsewhere than on their own store for a game. So you can't just price on Steam at full msrp then discount it 15% for epic permanently.

it's like apple kicking you out of their app store if you sell the app somewhere else at a 20% discount

              Anonymous

No it doesn't, unless you're selling steam keys. Which I am 100% certain EGS isn't. Also EGS exclusives aren't on Steam anyway, so what the frick does Valve TOS matter to them? What is Valve the world government now, which has control over every single store?

alright steamie stop huffing and puffing getting all defensive over gaben I will switch out steam for apple and android.

Apple and Android control the entire mobile app marketplace. It's two players. They charge 30% and you have to pay it. Are they entitled to it?

The rules written for monopolies are 100 years out of date. Tech corps have network effects and winner take all platforms. The idea of capitalism is that competition drives down prices and this isn't happening here.
It has to happen. It's not just steam it's all these companies.

Do you get it? Fricking goy

They can charge whatever the frick they want for access to their walled garden device. Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft do the exact same shit. Don't like it, make your own device.

That's what Valve did with their Steam Deck. I don't give a frick about your ideas for capitalism when you're whinging about problems created by IP and Trademark law without explicitly advocating for their abolishment.

It doesn't work like that anymore as I said tech has NETWORK EFFECTS dumbass

These aren't ideas for capitalism it is literally the concept of capitalism.
Competition drives prices lower. Adam smith warned against monopolies.

Being a devoted steamie turns you into a bootlicker for corporations

                Anonymous

It doesn't work like that because you get sued for violating patents and copyrights, moron. Even Valve got sued for violating patents over their Steam Deck, good thing they have no shortage of money from that 30% cut they take so they didn't get driven out of business by the lawsuits.

You're the corporate bootlicker, since you are not even willing to admit that these laws used to create monopolies need to be abolished. Corporate law needs to be abolished too, so the people involved in the corporation can't hide their personal wealth from consequences.
Just admit you're wrong and take the L already, the original argument saw no refutation because you were wrong and you just chose to digress. At this point you're just wasting my time because you want my attention.

When you can't even admit that you're wrong, you're the one who comes across as a manchild. Doesn't help that you're shilling for a publicly traded corporation which has a legal obligation to maximize profit for the shareholders. Not that they are doing a particularly good job at it, but that's why Timmy is taking Ls.

no I'm not. all the tech corps with their walled gardens should get fricked.

also law can in some cases create monopolies. But law is also the thing that's supposed to break monopolies. Like adam smith described the state has a referee role to play to destroy monopolies to ensure competition can take place.

                Anonymous

I didn't ask you to suck Gabens wiener, you mentally degenerated fricktard. I asked you to admit you were wrong to imply that games sold exclusively on EGS have an obligation to follow pricing set by Valve. They don't have that obligation, they are set at full price regardless because that's what the publishers and developers want the customer to pay.

                >Government creates problems
                >Government creates solutions to problems it created
                >Solutions create new problems

    >According to Judge Coughenour, Wolfire’s allegations are that Valve uses a combination of “written and unwritten rules” to “enforce” control over developers, influencing how games, even non-Steam-enabled ones, are sold and priced. And the judge feels that these allegations are “sufficient to plausibly allege unlawful conduct.”

    >This May 6 decision is a win for Wolfire, following a previous setback in the ongoing legal case against Valve and its Steam platform. After filing the initial lawsuit last year in May, Wolfire’s case against Valve was dismissed by the same Judge in November. However, Wolfire was allowed to file another complaint about the issues noted in the dismissal and did so. Now, Wolfire’s antitrust lawsuit will move forward in court.
