1 is a bit mechanically rough but has great aesthetics and story, Covenant has a great story and soundtrack and fixes the gameplay up, From the New World makes the gameplay even better (bar the reduction in fusion forms) but has a throwaway story.
liked the first two a lot. 3 has some interesting mechanics but its really not nearly as soulful of an experience. clearly tne devs just wanted to make another game and went at it and didnt bother to filter themselves. kinda admire jt for that but i didnt find it as.enjoyable of a package. vastly prefer 1 and 2.
I love Covenant but i fricking despise that time-travel bullshit at the end and no, i don't care that Karin being Yuri's mom is constantly hinted in the game and it was the only way to give Yuri and Alice a happy ending
Idk man, I really liked it. It’s just such an elegant solution to the “Our first game had multiple endings but now we’re doing a sequel” problem that a lot of series run into a wall with. And it works really well thematically too.
Aside from maybe The Warp in the West, it’s probably my favourite solution that a game’s presented to it
Interesting games (this and Covenant). The intense atmosphere of Koudelka meets Legend of dragoon combat system and they had not one but two tearjerker endings.
Koudelka is the only good one and it doesn't even have ''Shadow Hearts'' in it's name
SH1 is mediocre
SH2 is overrated piece of shit
SH3 is...well it's SH3
these games are one of the very few jrpgs I've bothered to finish, fantastic games, all three of them. is there anything remotely similar, or do we all wait for pennyblood?
Koudelka is great.
Shadow Hearts 1 is fine, I guess, but already a massive step down from its predecessor. Despite being a direct sequel, the plot elements it carries over are mostly butchered.
Shadow Hearts 2 is also fine, but from what I played it seemed to abandon even more of what made the series unique. The first game at least managed to build a semblance of a dark, gothic atmosphere, but the only place where 2 really achieves that is in the very beginning. I ended up dropping it.
In terms of gameplay, Koudelka's combat system isn't great but it's not as terrible as some make it out to be. This is practically the only area that Shadow Hearts improves upon, but while the Judgement Ring is neat, it can also unnecessarily prolong combat. I think what ultimately threw me off 2 was a couple of early dungeons with absurdly high encounter rates.
3rd one doesn't exist,
first one is rough, but ok,
2nd one is one of the best JRPG's ever made, everything is just right in this game, protag is one of the best ever in a game, villain's, story, party members, combat, if I had to complain about this game it was on the easy side,
I wouldn't count Koudelka so I can enjoy the first one without being pissed off,
I don't get why so many morons act like the third game is irredeemable garbage when it was a mechanical improvement in every area. Plus 2 has a ton of goofy shit that gets a free pass for no explicable reason. Is it "muh yuri"?
1 had some camp humour, not that much overall.
2 dialed it up a bit, mostly centered around certain characters but hit that nice stopping point of still being amusing throughout without going too far.
3 often just retread the same ground as 2 and dialled it up again. What was originally quirky and charming became annoying and seemingly uinending at times.
The mechanical improvements don't redeem that. They also just seemed superfluous. Improvement for the sake of improvement but it never really added anything meaningful like the improvements going into 2 did.
>without going too far
One of the main characters is a gay wrestling vampire super hero that can turn invisible after taking estrogen. If you balk at anything in 3 after that then you're brainless.
>mostly centered around certain characters >still being amusing throughout
Compared to 3 where it's a lot more. And like I siad, with it only being a couple of characters it doesn't wear itself thin. It didn't help that they basically rehashed most of Joachim's shit across a few characters so it is just more of the same anyway. It tried to be more of SH2 instead of just more Shadow Hearts overall.
>It tried to be more of SH2 instead of just more Shadow Hearts overall.
You mean the game where the protag is excited about seeing panties within the first 10 minutes?
Keep cherry picking, it's apparently all you've got to go on. >overall
As in Koudelka, SH1 and 2.

You saying Yuri lusting after panties is a one off thing that never gets brought up again?

No, you're arguing with what you're trying to interperet out of what I have said instead of anything I've actually said.
Keep going with the "So what you're sayiung is..." lines but that's not what any of the words I have put down actually mean.

Hey man, I'm not the one here trying to claim the series wasn't full of goofy anime shit from the very beginning.
But I get it. It's okay when Yuri acts like a stereotypical anime character because you like him. That's cool.

Again, trying interpret things that aren't being said. What a moronic fricking statement.
Pretty much the only thing I ever said about SH1 was >1 had some camp humour, not that much overall.
It's certainly there and sprinkled throughout. Nobody is denying that like you seem to think. So go ahead and keep arguing with your imaginary villain.

actually he's not so stereotypical for romcoms, he doesn't stammer and stutter at the sight or go dense mode. he's attracted right off the bat and makes it known, though he is a tsundere. yuri is refreshing to anime watchers.

Nah, he's just a generic perv. It's why he sneaks peaks at Margarete's panties multiple times.

okay, maybe you haven't watched enough anime. or perhaps you are media illiterate.
People who don't like FtNW are bascially "no fun allowed" autist types who got attached to Yuri and want to rationalize it or hipster types who actually think Koudelka is a good game. No sense arguing with them.
>Is it "muh yuri"?
In a way. The real problem is the dogshit plot than involves a wild goose chase across boring locations (imagine visiting Vegas and you end up exploring just a hotel) where nothing important happens to the characters which means the characters have nothing important/interesting to say/do. Johnny is a charisma vacuum that spend 90% of the game stuttering while confused while Shania is mostly silent expect for a few scene near the end to show her motivations. When they finally start talking and expressing their feeling for what's happening and for each other the game's basically over.
I played Koudelka and now im convinced people shilling this series are some sort of organized trolling discord trying to gaslight people into playing bad games.
Koudelka is so unique and nails the tone and atmosphere so well that I believe many people, myself included, desperately wanted it to be good. When a game is very unique you can't just drop it if it's bad and go play a game that better executes the same ideas because such a game does not exist, if a game with unique ideas is poorly executed you're simply left with nothing but all the wasted potential. Koudelka was like that for me, I almost wanted to gaslight myself into liking the game but the fact is that the game is simply not enjoyable despite all the great ideas and potential it had.
Koudelka is a good horror game, the characters are engaging and while the battle system is kind of shit,it's worth playing though.
Shadow hearts 1 was probably the first PS2 rpg that wasn't a piece of shit. Many good ones came after, but the first shadow hearts was good. It also has some of the worst voice acting in history. Just play any of the cutscenes, expecially involving that old woman telling a story and you'll see. It's so bad it's hilarious.
Shadow hearts 2 is really good, too. Story continues in a satisfying way and it has a gay character that is actually pretty damn funny.
Playing SH1 Undub right now and yeah, I know the scene you're talking about. It was really creepy in the undub, but I couldn't help thinking how bad it would be in the english dub
Glad I've finally started down the SH road. Played a bit of Kodelka and SH2 back upon release but never got far into them. Running a tight emulation rig now and it's working wonders
3 is actually a good game. People disparage it for "tonal" reasons, but I think it should be praised for that. They didn't copy the story of the first two games directly. It's set in the New World, and they allowed that to colour the narrative. Perhaps people were just missing Yuri.
I remember dropping Covenants years ago because I was so bummed out they made the bad ending canon after I went through all the trouble to get the good ending. I'll probably give it another go soon.
Anon... the good ending is also canon. Yes the bad ending is BUT the good ending is too. It will all make sense. Trust me. I hope this encourages you to finish one of the most kino classic JRPGs around.
Yeah I know, that was spoiled to me later on and made me feel very silly, which is why I plan on playing it through soon (probably as soon as I'm done with what I'm currently playing). But back then I was irrationally bummed out about it.
It goes SC1 bad -> Covenant -> SC1 good -> FTNW. Roger says he's never seen an Emigre ritual performed in FTNW. That can't be the case if Covenant happens, as he performs with one Yuri at the game's climax.
The one in your pic is pretty frustrating. Has a neat intro and great setting. Horror jrpg is a fun idea, but the characters are crap and the story is mostly lousy aside from a few exceptions. The music is good and the graphics are alright, but it just doesn't really do anything outstanding and borders on mediocrity that makes it so frustrating. Has a lot of potential.
Also the main character is horribly unlikable. One of the worst JRPG protags. The whole game he's like "I want to rape this girl" and then the story is that they "fall in love." Frick off with this shit. He's probably the biggest problem with the game.
I played all of them and enjoyed the series just fine. I appreciate the unique setting and how each character has a different leveling/skill acquiring system starting from covenant onwards.
Frank is my favourite character, master of the Momonga style.
Pretend the 3rd one doesn't exist.
1 is a bit mechanically rough but has great aesthetics and story, Covenant has a great story and soundtrack and fixes the gameplay up, From the New World makes the gameplay even better (bar the reduction in fusion forms) but has a throwaway story.
It's still a great game.

-is what a filtered pleb would say
Karin make my dick hard
Koudelka is my favorite of the bunch
I love Covenant but i fricking despise that time-travel bullshit at the end
and no, i don't care that Karin being Yuri's mom is constantly hinted in the game and it was the only way to give Yuri and Alice a happy ending

Timeline is Kouldelka -> 1 bad -> Covenant -> 1 good -> FTNW
>1 good -> FTNW
i thought FTNW took place after Covenant's ending because Nicolai unleashing the Malice in Apoina Tower is canon
Rasputin's plans have been the same for years, there's no reason why Alice being alive would divert that.
Interesting games (this and Covenant). The intense atmosphere of Koudelka meets Legend of dragoon combat system and they had not one but two tearjerker endings.
Koudelka is the only good one and it doesn't even have ''Shadow Hearts'' in it's name

koudelka would be a lot better if its battle system weren't such hot garbage
It would be a far better game without it.
I quit because there was no Sora
Shadow Hearts Covenant is the best JRPG of all time, and I've been saying it since day 1 of /vrpg/
these games are one of the very few jrpgs I've bothered to finish, fantastic games, all three of them. is there anything remotely similar, or do we all wait for pennyblood?
Best town theme of any game
Koudelka is great.

I've only played koudelka but the shadow heart games are in my backlog
I played Koudelka and now im convinced people shilling this series are some sort of organized trolling discord trying to gaslight people into playing bad games.
The real answer is much more simple: hipsters and elitism.
its probably just people who like any non fantasy setting in an rpg blindly because its 'different'
Or people had fun with the games.
It’s that simple, fricking schizos
Koudelka is so unique and nails the tone and atmosphere so well that I believe many people, myself included, desperately wanted it to be good. Starting to realize that if any JRGP has art by a woman and/or a soundtrack by a woman it’s certified kino
I haven't played any of them, but back in the day I had a videogame magazine with that same advertisement/spread, and I cummed to it.
CUmmed hard.
The first one is a neat and eerie horror JRPG but the sequel turned into a generic anime moviegame
Her skirt is irrationally glued to her butt
3 is actually a good game. People disparage it for "tonal" reasons, but I think it should be praised for that. They didn't copy the story of the first two games directly. It's set in the New World, and they allowed that to colour the narrative. Perhaps people were just missing Yuri.
Frank Goldfinger is the best character in the series.
how did they get away with it is beyond me
I remember dropping Covenants years ago because I was so bummed out they made the bad ending canon after I went through all the trouble to get the good ending. I'll probably give it another go soon.

Anyone ever played Magna Carta?
I heard it has a similar combat system to Shadow Hearts.
And it's the only good thing about the game. The rest is mediocre af at best.
Knowing absolutely nothing about it, the Yellow Girl looks cute
We need more horror rpgs
I played all of them and enjoyed the series just fine. I appreciate the unique setting and how each character has a different leveling/skill acquiring system starting from covenant onwards.
Frank is my favourite character, master of the Momonga style.
This game is KINO and I wish there were more JRPGs like that instead of the slop we got feed today.
