I had a friend who was autistically into this game for reasons I could not understand and he could not elucidate. I played it with him for a little bit but lost interest when I couldn't find any unclaimed land to build a house or something
I think I played on some private server and didn't make it far after character creation. The game sounded like a dream in beta, too bad about the p2w...

We signed in, took one look at the energy meter, and left
unironically a 'you can do anything' sandbox game. very easy to get invested in and not want to give up.
you could have houses, cars, boats, ect. could have little gardens and do all the homosexual rp stuff but at the same time there was an extremely competitive open world pvp community that never stopped try harding. The world was huge but neverfinished because after the asiatics took everyone's money, they promptly stopped working on archeage and went straight to pumping out failure after failure of mobile games/spin offs.
Main development of archeage effectively stopped in 2020 so xlgames could release aa2 in 2022, which they failed to deliever and have delayed to 2025. Game has been on life support for so long, and every 3 months the development team would write long letters promising big content and all the bug/balance fixes just around the corner.
they did a huge bait and switch at the begining of the year, claiming they had a whole year ofcontent planned and even handed out 1 year of free subscription to the big spenders to get them to spend more, then they promptly announced the shutdown a few days ago.
for na/eu, they got a standard 'lol game is dead, u should have played more lmao' letter implying it was the player base's fault, but the KR letter that kr released to calm down korea nerds said 'na/eu cost too much to support, so we axed them. rest assure we would never axe you our lovely koreans!' so its just more of the same lies and abuse.
Does this game have any potential on a private server with a custom setup to moderate tryhard-ism?

Not surprised. First month or two were insanely fun, I had managed to find some chink bot farming thunderstruck logs in an open world area past a small gap in the invisible wall on a boundary past mountains in the chinese overworld area, collected like 20 logs, ran back to town, bought everyone in the Ganker guild AH access and a month's worth of subscription, then got bored because they nuked jester. (joker? trickster? whatever the archer class was that was fricking shit up day 1)

the fault was relying on cooldown rotations instead of having a nuanced moveset with resource cost specials.
'Action' combat is one thing, combining a WYSIWYG action with cooldown rotations while playing twister with ground effect alerts is simply a massive chore.
People wanted a monster hunter MMO, coming from the same studio that did MH Frontier, and what we got was hotkey rotations that had some OK hitboxes.

Played it once, housing seemed neat but it was all very clunky and stiff to play. Heard nothing but pay2win complaints afterward.
I had one great experience with this game where I went out into the ocean on a raft to see how far I could go and got attacked by the Kraken which I didn't know was in it, that left me stranded in the ocean with a broken raft. Other than that I barely remember it.

You can remove 95% of that message and it will convey the exact same information WITHOUT making the reader feel like they aren't being taken serious in the slightest. The only reason I never removed this from my library was because I found it interesting and weird how often they'd post update stuff.
Vindictus is pretty much in the exact same position, less than 200 people playing it, but gets seasonal events constantly. It's utterly bizarre to me. I can only assume out of the 150~ people playing, over half are total whales that were able to fund the server and HR money until recently when someone must have decided it just wasn't worth it anymore.
