honestly the best way to play them in current era. all of the major mods have moved to the ee games. ee has some decent engine improvements and modding versatility. the shitty companions that beamdog added can be easily removed (although some of their quests have some good loot and neera is fricking broken).
iwd/planescape haven't been touched besides moving them to the updated engine. this fricks with the balance with iwd but if you ignore dual wielding and some of the stronger kits it's not too bad. iwd wasn't a hard game to begin with and breaking the game with meta builds is part of the charm.
remember to pirate them though because frick beamdog. also siege of dragonspear is just miserable, avoid at all costs.

For BG and P:T, yes, just go with the updated versions. Not sure on IWD, never really played tha beyond a few hours so can't advise.

Most of the mods are ported over and you can ignore the extra content added if you want.

The only valid reason not to play ee anymore is if you want the authentic BG1 experience instead of a port of BG1 into BG2EE, which is what BG1EE actually is.
Honestly, you'll probably love them and replay them multiple times, so you can play the old versions as a change of pace later.

Which is a shame because I played that more than any other RPG when I was a kid. It's still worth playing, though, and it's on GOG so just pirate it.

I still have fond memories of class-based reactivity in Icewind Dale 2. I also liked that you could be a cleric of evil gods and it actually showed in dialogue.

You make your own party in 2 also but they can't help themselves with their OC donut steeles. I imagine they'll limit the party size to force you to take one in the mod.

Icewind Dale and Planescape are good. For Baldur's Gate, you need the "de-enhanced" mod that removes the shit they added because it's honestly hot fricking garbage.

  10. 11 months ago

I mean, the originals are just fine so there's no real reason to play the "Enhanced Editions" unless you want to play with added content that isn't canon. I can't think of an actual reason to play the new versions.

What about Neverwinter Nights? Should I stick with the old 1.69 version or get EE?

        Anonymous

Idk, I'd assume sticking with the original is best. These crpg "remasters" only ever change the game to support newer hardware (which fan patches will already do) and add non-canon content. I've heard that some of the stuff in Neverwinter Nights EE were also put behind dlc when they were in the orignal, but I can't confirm. All I know is that the originals are good and that the EE's are at best a side-grade and totally unnecessary.

          Anonymous

          Thanks, that's what I suspected.
I stick with the originals then, they still work flawlessly on my machine. No reason to pay for the same game twice.
And putting stuff behind a paywall that already came with the original is one of the scummiest things I've ever heard.

the old games are really zoomed in for a reason

  14. 11 months ago
    Anonymous

Play the originals. The EEs use the BG2 rule set which breaks BG1 and IWD horribly and completely trivialises the games (especially when you include the extra classes) and in the case of BG2 it adds crap.

Only the EE of Planescape was released unmolested.

Ugh... Icewind Dale the great Infinity Engine casual filter...

  16. 11 months ago

Infinity Engine games are kind of a huge pain to play on modern systems, so if the new remasters rid you of the necessity to go through all the hurdles, I'd say it's a good enough reason to choose them over the originals for most players.

      No, they aren't.

I remember having to download some Chinese fan-made environment thingy to run Infinity Engine games in back in the day when I played PS:T, and it was already terribly outdated then. Maybe there are better tools for it now.

Even with fanfic removed, BG1 EE is an unbalanced mess. You've still got kits, new weapon proficiencies, the messed up world map, etc.
It's "ok" if you only care about story, but in that case why aren't you reading a book?

Not unless you're running into gauntlets of difficult fights in a dungeon for which you might be too low level for.

      Anonymous

Yes this is how a normal DnD crawl looks like. Vancian magic is complete shit for dungeon crawling. That's why in the new editions you have infinite usage spells and cantrips to make part of your party viable after two encounters.

        Anonymous

The fights aren't supposed to exhaust you so much you are forced to rest after each one and wands exist for a reason if you need some extra damage in a pinch. Multi and dual classes are also a thing and work extremely well.

          Anonymous

          >Multi and dual classes are also a thing and work extremely well.
Might as well you cheats at that point. Multiclass is broken in any IE game and even mores so in ADnD.

            Anonymous

dual classing is better than multi in almost every combination. also with dual classing you don't have to be filthy non-human scum

            Anonymous

            >'game system is bad because I use all of my casters' spells in a single encounter'

            >'it's cheating'
You get much slower advancement in exchange for having access to two classes. It performs well within limitations. Is your brain rotten?

              Anonymous

Yes it's cheating. If you played actual DnD you would know dual classing is the staple of a powergamer not roleplayer.

                Anonymous

And that's why the video games are balanced with dual and multi classing in mind. They're not a tabletop session where you can change stuff on the fly or fiddle with the numbers and rolls to make things happen.
