this. i feel like I'm not really taking advantage of the bomb/teleport mech combo of teleporting vek to any square you can move a bomb to. heat sinks feel like total dogshit, mist eaters are probably OP but I haven't really utilized them well. my microbrain could immediately grasp cata since they're simplest. i don't have the 2 coins necessary to unlock the other squad

i also get the feeling mist eaters are strong, but frozen titans are still the strongest.
These new vek all being 2-4 HP are making me rethink my usual strategies. Seems like the game got a fair bit harder even on Normal that I have to wonder if a lot of the old squads hold up, even if the hermit crabs have a habit of yeeting themselves into the water.
Can someone give me a quick summary?

I haven't beaten the base game (nor base FTL). I'm a brainlet? Any tips?
Base game is pretty simple once you get the flow of it.
>Always make your first island one with 1-2 health vek only
>Get a good pilot for your squad
>hope they pick up +1 mech reactor on a level up
Rift Walkers are the starting squad but their mid game weakness doesn't really make them the best to win with. I won all 3 hard medals with steel judoka, supposedly the worst squad, before rift walkers.
I have a very hard time believing steel judoka are the worst squad when zenith exists, the battering ram outright requires the armored pilot to be not a complete liability and the pull mech is absolute dogshit.
Well really the worst squad is the secret squad, forgot about them. But yeah you have to invalidate the self damage with abe but you're left with a good mech once you do, especially if you have +health on Abe. Meanwhile the prime mech puts in a ton of work. I'm not sure about this but I think the upgrades you can buy (and maybe get from time pods?) are based on which squad you have, and I was able to get the teleporter weapon for the pull mech consistently, and that's the single best weapon in the game.

memorize which enemies can web you and which ones can't. enemies that can web will go towards the closest squad member to attack otherwise they'll attack a building, this is super important for your opening deployment. a mission gets way harder if you deploy like shit initially, this is why there's multiple pilots with deployment bonuses.
related, this is why camille is a good go-to pilot for most squads. Being able to waste multiple vek turns trying to web a mech that can't be webbed is invaluable sometimes
Don’t be afraid of taking nonfatal damage, use health like a resource. Body blocking shots and blocking the tiles where vek spawn is super important. Ideally you’d push/pull enemies to do this but sometimes you gotta have a mech do it.
getting all the objectives complete on an island is more important than mech or grid damage. The extra weapon/pilot you can get and then immediately sell can be the difference between an extra mech core or being forced to waste it on +2 grid power.

What is this game about? I've seem the screenshots and I know it's strategy and turn based. But is it roguelike/lite? Like, there are random levels or is it a linear story?
I'll probably buy it but want to know if it can be played beyond story mode or have other modes.

Turn based strategy roguelike. Random levels, very minimal story. The only thing that carries between runs is one character who can level up between runs to get a max of two perks.
