yeah it paints a grim picture about the state of the industry but that state was bound to happen eventually
just try not to think about it too much but enjoy good things when they do come along (but also ANNIHILATE your enemies and send them back to hell where they belong whenever they try to ruin a great thing)

        >yeah it paints a grim picture about the state of the industry but that state was bound to happen eventually

I kinda feel like a Tomb Raider remaster was long overdue. The original PSX and DOS/ Windows games never really did get re-releases, outside of being on PSN and re-bundled on playforms like Steam and GOG. The closest to any form of remaster were maybe some of the iOS/ Android releases that may have added a few extra visual effects. Anniversary was a complete remake by CD of the first game. Not a remaster. I'm surprised it took this long to even consider a remaster for the OG trilogy. The question is, will Aspyr do a good job with it.

        i disagree
the first tomb raider game was revolutionary and 2, 3 and 4 were great games for the time, and in some ways still are
the LAU trilogy is decent but definitely not below average
the essence of the idea is fantastic but it was ruined by publisher greed and then a mediocre developer, an extremely common fate for many western games but to call it a below average game series is incorrect

I think most of the issue I had was with precision of her slow turning and her running, sometimes you'd do a running start and her ankle might hit a tiny piece of the wall and Lara would stop dead in her tracks. Or the run-jump precision, you'd press the button perfectly at the very edge but it wouldn't register because of that weird input lag the OG engine had. If the movement flowed a little better and the run-jumps were most responsive, I think more people would not give 2 damns about tank controls.

              Anonymous

              >weird input lag
No such thing. That's how the engine works, Lara won't make a jump until the step cycle is finished and that ensures a jump right at the edge when you hold the jump button.

          Anonymous

“tank controls” is a term that essentially means poorly designed controls.

There are thousands of games with bigger and better looking breasts, that never got as famous or recognized as a classic. Yes Lara's breasts are a bonus but if sex appeal was the only winning factor in games I can think of a dozen more off the top of my head that should've been more popular.

Tomb Raider 1, together with Quake 1 pretty much revolutionized the gaming industry by trailblazing the standards for 3D graphics and gameplay.
I would say TR1 is more responsible for the switch from 2D to 3D than Quake 1, because it was the game that put focus on traversing 3D spaces.

tomb raider 1 is one of the greatest games ever made you homosexual, along with games like mario 64 and doom it set the fricking standard for modern games.

the mistake they made with tomb raider was turning lara into generic shooter platformer where lara guns down like 300 dudes over the game, they should have stuck to the survival horror nature of tomb raider 1 in which the enviroment was trying to fricking kill you and you only killed like 3 dudes the entire fricking game.

the point was all the enemies were environmental, mummies, wolves, bats, bears.. then for plot reasons boss fight against fellow tomb raiders/mercs... in tomb raider 1 you felt like you were alone, in a tomb in the mountains, you didnt feel like girl rambo, you felt like you were TOMB RAIDING.... can i make that jump?? lets find out... NOPE.

the more lara gunned down humans in places like venice and london and area 51, the less i liked it, i wanted to get smushed by ceilings and spikes and drown in flooded tunnels and killed by rising sand or lava in old 4000 year old temples and ruins, not shot by a sniper.

this is why tomb raider 1 was the best tomb raider, gameplay wise it was the worst, but asthetics, plot and envriomental storytelling it will always be the best.

the extremely predictable terrain formations and precisely calculated jump movement let you know this without trying you fricking moron. i haven't even played any of the TR games in years if not decades and i still know a running jump + grab can cover an exact 3 block distance.

Id like to see you guys play through natlas mines without dying without practice....me, i had to know what would happen if i stepped on the midas hand, mind was blown when lara did infact turn to gold.

well my entire point was half the fun of the original tomb raider wasnt just mowing down hundreds of generic dudes with guns thats when TR lost me, but was infact the point that the environment was trying to frick you constantly, it felt opressive like an environmental survival horror.

when i was a child and i played tomb raider it made me think of things like curses in egyptian tombs whereby people would open the tombs and mysteriously die weeks later, tomb raider had a kind of mysterious anxiety to the entire thing every time you got to a new level, you didnt know if the floor was going to collapse or if a pack of wolves was going to attack as you ran around the corner.

It was like that feeling you got in resident evil 1, when you got far enough to meet the hunters and you were low on ammo and you opened a door only to hear that click click walking sound and you are filled with dread as you know you only have 1 shotgun shell left and about 5 pistol rounds.

The old Tomb Raider games had to have tank controls because you needed to be able to make precise movements for the platforming. Learning how to fluently control the character to perform tricky jump combos and shit was like the whole game.

Those 3 for 1 remakes always turn out to be meh. They provide mediocre homogenized experience where you can't really see and appreciate all the technological and gameplay advances between the games. Both Crash and Spyro collections proved that.

And yes, I know that you can switch to the old graphics but I'm going to bet that feature only has the barest minimum amount of effort put into it. Just emulate or use fan patches if you want to play the originals.

      Anonymous

1-3 were all done on the same engine with minor improvements (very minor, like one new move each game), the originals feel the same regardless of which one you play, they just get harder and the devs figured out how to make trickier puzzles

      Anonymous

      >Both Crash and Spyro collections proved that.

Is Crash N'Sane Trilogy really a remaster though? The games were remade on Vicarious Visions own engine. Spyro was remade on UE4. Aspyr has said that they are reusing the original source codes for the Tomb Raider remasters, I would suspect that they are the PC source codes. The games will have the options to play with the original controls and art assets.

Come on now, let's be serious. As hopeful as I am for these games to be successful, I really doubt they will outsell all the newer games, combined. That would be over 35 million copies. Classic TR is pretty niche. I would say the only way it does extremely well sale wise is if some streamers covered it because of how hard they can be, which could cause an uptick in sales. But I'm being generous when I say this, I'm only seeing maybe 6-7 million copies, at best. I hope I'm wrong and it does better because I would love to see another remastered pack with the rest of the CORE games and a possible shift in future titles.

Back in the late 90's Tomb Raider was the biggest thing on the planet, and I remember Angel of Darkness getting the Cyberpunk2077 levels of hype, with the marketing getting all in - but that was 30 years ago. Most of the people playing vidya nowadays weren't even born yet, so the nuLara is all they know.

                >make Lara a weak and damsel in distress character over the course of 3 games. Each time she gets to be somewhat of a badass at the end, only for her to forget everything by the beginning of the next title
                >make her dependent on her father's wealth, as opposed to the wealth she made on her own after being disowned by her family when she turned down an arranged marriage
                >sexualizing Lara is bad, because women aren't allowed to be sexy and confident. Having her squirm around for 20 seconds with a piece of rebar sticking in her head is completely fine, however
                >inb4 TR always had gory deaths. Lara never "suffered" in those other than something like the Midas' hand. It was "waaah" then splat. Over. NuRaider actually has her suffer before dying.
                >Serious and grounded story (ah yes, storm goddesses, undead samurai, deathless ones throwing greek fire, very grounded) while also being completely forgettable. Tomb Raider was never known for it's thrilling story, because it never needed one. Lara just needs tombs to explore and baddies to occasionally shoot. Not enemies to constantly shoot and occasionally a tomb to explore.
                >On the subject of tombs, 2013 Tomb Raider, only had optional tombs, which amounted to literally one room with a 20 second puzzle for any first timer. Rise of the Tomb Raider improved on this only slightly, but the tombs at least felt like puzzles. It's a shame that the best tombs on the Survivor series are locked to DLC for Shadow, because some of those were genuinely pretty good.
                >Having Lara constantly needing help, needing to be saved by another. Taking away her badass autonomy and self assurance. Classic Lara was designed to be the female Duke Nukem, an action heroine who could handle anyone and anything.
                >The games themselves while fine on their own, feel very much like a poor man's Uncharted. Even LAU Tomb Raider still felt like Tomb Raider, albeit modernized. Survivor series has no real identity.

I thought they were stiff, but I didn't care. The level design was designed around it and the exploration and atmosphere greatly held the game up. I still enjoy them to this day.
The one thing I hate about games today is that everything seems to be designed to play exactly the same. They have to have the same feature set, control schemes, down the the layout, as whatever is popular at the time. There's little to no variation. You play one game, you probably played them all. Tomb Taider played nothing like anything else at the time. That's partly because people were still figuring out how to design games, but the diversity of the implementations just made it fun to check out different games that had their own unique rules and mechanics unique to them.

Honestly, time. It just got away from me and I've played so many other series along the way. I have no idea where my playstation is. I have them on PC as well, but admittedly, I'm too moronic to get them working correctly. TR1 just sits at the menu and won't let me progress sometimes, and then the other times the FMVs just crash and close the window. I thought about emulating them and then heard the news of these, so I decided to wait.

The Last Revelation is really good, with probably the second best story in the franchise (after AoD), but it does outstay its welcome and some of the puzzles are deliberately obtuse.
Chronicles is essentially a glorified standalone expansion pack for TR4, and it clearly shows that CORE's heart weren't in it, because you can feel the half-assedness of it all. But some levels are fun, like those final levels that remind me of Max Payne 1 finale, until they shit the bed and break, because Chronicles is buggy as frick.

It is game breaking in my opinion. Especially because it would probably apply to all other hostile hitscanner NPC's in the game (the melee guys did work). I didn't feel like playing a fricked up babymode version of the game. Also I re-enabled the saving crystals in the sourceport, which turned out to be an incredibly annoying and unforgiving saving system.

            Anonymous

            >with all the weird textures popping in and out?
That's the bug that happens when you hold an action key and accidentally skip the cutscene before it even starts. Somehow the engine goes on a fritz, and loads the textures from the previous level.
And it usually happens in Nevada, because you finish the level on a quad and there is 99% chance you'll be holding action key when the level end.

I liked the grabbing mechanic, even though it was a little hand-holdy at times, it made me enjoy it a lot. You could also disable it in the options.
I get the camera issue, but I enjoy it in a 3D game when I don't have to fight with the camera because that's one side-effect of the old TR games at some points.

weren't they working nonstop since TR2 or something? they literally wanted to stop making TR games because they were being overworked to shit. since killing Lara off in TR4 didn't work out what better way would there be to get laid off than make a dogshit product?

they were working nonstop before TR1 was even released
they were working overtime (crunch) from at least 1995 to 2000
developers back then were hardcore passionate psychos compared to developers today

        Anonymous

Yeah they were pumping about TR games nonstop and were severely burnt out. To make matters worse they split the teams and had the more experienced team rush out Chronicles while a new team worked on AoD. Then development was going so poorly that they sent the other team (which IIRC where promised downtime after finishing Chronicles since they were pumping out yearly installment since the first game) and when they got there AoD was so bad that the entire project was scrapped and now you had a team of extremely fatigued and demotivated devs rush out their big next gen title. Just a complete disaster on every level.

Also, pretty sure the creator for TR also just wanted one game, mostly exploration based, not action based. TR2 and onwards was all publishers.

Its a fact, the only people that planned sequels was the publisher after TR’s massive success. By TR3, devs were prolly already sick of it.

The publishers wanting sequels to a wildly successful game is not abnormal or bad and doesn't mean the original team didn't want to make them

Yeah I was never a big fan of how the sequels put so much more focus on combat and human enemies. None of them managed to replicate the feeling of isolation the first game had, it was like a Metroid game in disguise.

It's funny that it was Eidos that threw Core under the bus, when 90% of the blame can be pinned on Eidos.
The only way Core "mismanaged" the project, was them working simultainously on AoD and Chronicles, which Core didn't want to make in the first place. And then there was this "working with an alien PS2 tech" issue, that could've been solved by using a more experienced team (that was stuck with Chronicles) and having more time (that Eidos refused to give them).

            Anonymous

Making Chronicles was a mistake in the first place. The dev team was tired of making the same old shit and the fans were also tired of buying them, at that point TR was no longer a cutting edge game and was turned into yearly shovelware. It was a game that nobody wanted to buy and nobody wanted to make and it shows, it's a fricking half assed piece of shit that was scrapping the absolute bottom of the barrel and served no purpose other than to waste resources that could be used for AoD.

they're pretty novel exploration platformers tied to horrendous combat, like not in a primitive resident evil way that you can still enjoy with the right mindset, it's just bad. I hated combat in metroid prime but it was at least functional z targeting zelda stuff as boring as it was.

in the world of car design shrink-wrapped means that there is very little "fat" or excessive visual weight, like a shrink-wrapped package
this makes the stance of the car look faster, more aggressive and powerful
when translated to level design in games, shrink-wrapped means that every single component of the level exists for a reason and that there's no wasted resources, spaces or items in the level - this contributes to a more cohesive and consistent level which makes it easier to guide the player and to build a believable world

None of the original Tomb Raider games have superfluous level design, the level design princples are very consistent apart from 3 which does a little bit of open world / branching which kind of sucks
Also this makes the world less believable, not more, because the real world does have useless areas

yes, outdoor areas but not in man-made structures; man-made structures never have useless areas
2 has very few but 3 has loads more (half of india, lud's gate, etc.), and 2 and 3 aren't as obviously well-paced as 1 is in terms of the ramp-up in difficulty, rakugo and the flowering of intricacy
                in MY opinion

                Because space has rules
You might make some big vista or grand room which looks nice, but doing so might mean you need a long corridor around the back of it to get to another area, because that's just how space works
It's worth having cool large areas if it means you have to use a corridor or a ladder every now and then

I'm going to take advantage of this thread to ask for help: around 2001 my brother built a new PC so I started trying all the demo discs that came with magazines. One of them had a demo for one of the PS1 games; it started at sunset, with LAra wearing I believe a wetsuit and standing near a body of water filled with sharks; you could climb some structure (a crane maybe?) and dive into the water from it, but every time I did a shark ate me, so I could never move beyond that part of the level. I've only played 1 and 2 and they're not it, was it a demo for a later game? Or some extra level?

Will this remaster have some sort of level editor ?

Probably not, but if it's good and easy to mod then the community will embrace it and make a level editor for it.

Don't think so. Have to wait for TR4 remaster for that.

This seems like it will follow them.

There is also a powerhouse known as AoE 2. I only wish Warcraft 3 got half as much love as AoE 2 had gotten.

i only learned last year how many fans of tomb raider don't actually know anything about the games and then it dawned on me that they are actually just fans of lara

I don't what the hell happened suddenly in 2024. Tomb Raider RE saves Lara, Tekken 8 has full single player features on release, Yakuza is unstoppable, Dragon's Dogma comes back. is this finally a turning point in gaming?

        >story mode MK style
        >arcade mode ladder with short stories for each character like SF
(I need to confirm this but I think it's in)
        >Arcade Quest with ghost a.i. feature. Visiting an arcade 'simulator' with your avatar with story fighting the best Tekken characters of the arcade
        >separate ghost a.i. feature. Imagine something in between regular CPU a.i. mixed with 'machine learning', real time reacting a.i. (no more milisecond button reading but actual a.i. reactions)
        >Tekken Ball mini game
        >character customisation with bikinis and all the other goodies
        >generally generous grinding. Seems like you get lots of in game cash for the cosmetics without having to grind a trillion time the arcade
        All these in 2024.

While it's rad that classic Tomb Raider is getting any attention at all, why would you get this over running the PC versions you can also run romhacks alongside of?

Some people are put off by the long levels and the constant backtracking to and from each area within a level
That and it takes place almost entirely in egypt

      >forced, unskippable tutorial
      >RNG tabletop game in Semerkhet
      >open world, multi-visit levels could have you search several levels for one key item you might have missed, it is very easy to get lost in Alexandria levels
      >the literal entirety of the Cairo levels
      >less weapons than 3, and the worthless ammo like poison arrows and scatter shotgun shells
      >what little ammo and guns there are see little use because most enemies and bosses are immortal (scarabs, locusts) or only vulnerable to gimmicks (skeletons)

not much point in doing them without doing VI as well, and at that point it's better to just have separate trilogies.

I have a feeling the reason is that they are running on a slightly different engine than TR1-3. So it would be double the work to remaster all five games, because in case of TR 1-3 they can just swap the assets around, while it won't be as easy with TR 4-5. I hope that people who played the games know what I'm trying to say.

I just hope we can mix'n'match some settings between old and new. Eg. If they have grip be a toggle with the modern controls, I wouldn't mind that on Classic as well.

I assume that's going to work that way, because that's still the same game and the new graphics are just an overlay.
