4A sold worse than both 5th gen games. Even as much as people love to cry and shit their pants about SCAN MODO, V and VD are staggeringly more input-intensive and rewarding than 4A. The reason they didn't sell was because mecha had been in decline for decades and Fromsoft was only gaining its name power at the birth of Dark Souls, and wasn't full meme for years afterwards. I'm willing to believe that a new AC title would outsell almost every other AC title combined now, but I can also guarantee most of this is just because people know the name "From Software" more than actual games they have made.

Filtered as a word has lost its meaning. I've played the later entries in the series multiple times and even dabbled into some MP shenanigans. They still suck ass and don't capture the appeal of the series. But at the end of the day I would still play them over the usual modern AAA garbage, but that's not high praise.

I would love to see a giant native port of the entire series to PC, hopefully not bound to moronic launchers like steam or epic. Through backwards compatibility Xbox has the 360 versions of Dark Souls 1 and 2, Enchanted Arms, Otogi 1 and 2, and Shadow Assault Tenchu. 6 games developed by Fromsoft yet for some reason not one Armored Core game made it. Seems suspicious.
I think the multiplayer aspects are what's keeping it from being ported. It would be work reving a dead game's servers and if they cut it out the reviewers will give it awful scores.

It's mostly the control scheme that's the problem. For whatever reason the AC series jumped on the "left stick to move, right stick to look" train really fricking late and did things like have look up and look down mapped to L1 & R1 respectively IIRC.
I think it was because when AC2 was in development they weren't sure if the PS2 controller was going to have thumbsticks or not. AC1 had the excuse of not being designed with the DS in mind. Could also just be they didn't want to change anything.
That was only for the joysticks but you could remap any buttom on every AC, Nexus was the one when the finally decide to put camara on the right stick.
AC1/Phantasma/Master of Arena are arguably the best games in the series. So no, every Armored Core game has aged gracefully. Games do not age. Once a masterpiece, always a masterpiece.

You built your mech, you want a slow hard hitting tank or an anoying mosquito that doesn't know the ground, you take mission and tune your AC if you have problems clearing any, a lot of balancing involve with generators, weight, cooling, lock on system.
Normies more than 90% of the time get upset when they can't self-insert as the lead protagonist in whatever media they are consuming, and almost invariably get furious when the lead protagonist is not literally what they personally project onto the character they first see. A nameless mech pilot who literally does not have a face or a single line of spoken dialogue is anathema to them, because they don't have the kind of understanding of expression to see a mech as an extension of the character itself.
They probably never got exposed to any decent mecha. Lets be honest, most of Gundam is moronic and/or autistic and "Robotech" is most peoples' first and last contact with the Macross series (which is mostly moronic anyway)

They've literally been making third-person over-the-shoulder mecha action games since the PS1.
Both Armored Core, which uses their own IP, and Another Century's Episode, which crosses over licensed IPs like Gundam and Macross.
But then they literally stumbled across the success of Demon's Souls and figured they could more easily milk that shit for all its worth by fleecing the gamer-masochist crowd, so pretty much all their other stuff was put on hold.
And yes; Demon's Souls and everything that came after, was a fluke. It originally was meant as an extremely niche Asian-only title, but through word of mouth a large influx of grey import started, which eventually culminated in an official release. And once Fromsoft realized this was basically a completely void niche in the west that had no-one catering to it, they went all in on it.

Armored Core 3 set the template for where the franchise should have gone, and clearly built itself on what was learned from AC2/AA, and its follow ups of Silent Line, Nexus and Last Raven perfected that template.

Fricking black background and Times New Roman font on a wire frame UI that made AC 1997 look more modern. Constantly stuttering at 10fps the moment any amount of explosives were used. The gutting of the mail system to tell any story whatsoever outside of the missions and build connections with other pilots, the shambles of an arena with what, twenty opponents? Armored Core 2 had like 130, and AA itself got shit for removing the arena altogether back in 2001.

Going fast is almost irrelevant to why it's bad, but still plays a part in why it's barely comparable to the PS2 era of games, it cut countless features built up over the previous games and feels cheap.

The early ones are left hand sword or shield, and right arm gun. The mid PS2 games started adding in some left handed gun options, then the later PS2 games had left and right hand options for everything.
Melee weapons are always useful to have at least one of just in case, if you run out of bullets for your guns and don't use energy weapons a bunch it can save you.
Had a really cool feeling moment in the last mission of AC3 where I was completely out of bullets for all my guns for both hands and shoulders and I had been purging them as I ran out. For the last fight in the game I was down to just my sword and nothing else and it felt really cool and climactic.
ACV could been good if it was on PC or crossplatform with better game system and matchmaking mechanic
the team play objective was fun when you finally get to play it
the spider legs/tank tracks long sniper build is finally useful when you have other teammates to attracted fire and protected you

AA has some of best missions in the series sandwiched between a lot of filler. I think it's worthing playing through but you aren't really missing anything essential by dropping it.

Doesn't matter what game you started with, the fact is 4 and beyond were nothing like the majority of the series, so fellating those games while claiming to care about the series is laughable.
It's prevalent with franchises who have significant changes between titles, especially when the older games were on an entirely different console that the new player might not own. It's incredibly unlikely for someone who started on the newest title to actually have gone back and played the rest when you not only need to buy the old games, but potentially buy a different system to play them.
So if someone started with ACV(or Monster Hunter World/Rise) and claimed to have played most/all of the past games and came to the conclusion that ACV was the best game, I'd probably bet money that they are lying. Not because I don't think that's a reasonable conclusion to make, but because it's incredibly unlikely that they actually spent the time playing all the past games.
This is less of a problem for AC threads since I think if someone started with ACV a decade ago and is still around AC threads, they've probably at least played some of the older games by this point.

I want a mecha game where you can dismount from your mech. For one, it'll be neat to stand at the feet of it and get to marvel at how fricking huge it is. Another thing is that they'll have to design a "big and small world." They can't just cheap out by ignoring small details. Because you can dismount and walk around, buildings will need interiors and there will need to be sufficient detail in the environments near and far. Also, it opens up the opportunity to hijack enemy mechs.

In my own opinion, I think the game was clearly under budget and time constraints and a lot of the things they wanted to do they didn't have the time or budget to make happen. Judging by how many different plot threads there are, its clear to me that they wanted to go way deeper with the game and just couldn't fit it all in. A sequel would be interesting now that they know how much they could realistically fit into another DxM within the budget and timeframe of the first game.

daemon x machina honestly felt weird as far as gameplay went. it didn't matter if you had the highest tier of machinegun you could get, or the lowest tier, the difference between them was basically the highest held a little more ammo, and did like 2 damage extra per bullet. The most effective way of killing the final boss was a complete joke in that it didn't rely on weapons at all, and just throwing shit at the boss because it was a hundred times more efficient than trying to kill it "normally".
If they were going to make a sequel, they need to actually pay attention to shit like weapon upgrades actually doing significantly more damage than their lower equivilents, since there's no merit in buying or upgrading gear when it gives you super minimal improvements over what you've been using for half the game.
They shouldn't have copied the thrash AC4 gameplay style. If you want to make a AC clone you should aim for 3 to LR era AC not the worst selling AC game in japan.

you don't know what you're talking about, AC4 had nice visual effects (Desert Wolf, Swarm of Red Eyes, Empress, Sol Dios and more) and gameplay is classic AC but with a dash. 4 and FA only have framerate issues in missions with lots of enemies or huge bosses spamming missiles, 95% of the missions are perfectly fine.
Journos got filtered by the lack of informations, difficulty and controls, as usual.
I kinda hope they ditch the whole AC4/5 style and go back to slower gameplay, or better yet, change the way fights played out entirely. I wouldn't be happy with some mosquito simulator like AC5 or Demon x machina, I want more varied gameplay so mech customization changes how I can confront situations.

yeah they are almost all on the same level of difficulty except LR. AC3 is supposedly easy because of the machine gun and ACFA because of the 1-hit kill arms forts with a well placed moonlight swing, but you get same kind of bullshit in other games (karasawa makes AC2 a baby game, and autocannon tank rapes almost everything in VD).
All games are easy to cheese, even LR.

IIRC AC3 was the one that had a more modern control scheme. AC2 and the others before it had you turning and aiming up with the shoulder buttons.

It's mostly the control scheme that's the problem. For whatever reason the AC series jumped on the "left stick to move, right stick to look" train really fricking late and did things like have look up and look down mapped to L1 & R1 respectively IIRC.
I think it was because when AC2 was in development they weren't sure if the PS2 controller was going to have thumbsticks or not. AC1 had the excuse of not being designed with the DS in mind. Could also just be they didn't want to change anything.

AC1/Phantasma/Master of Arena are arguably the best games in the series. So no, every Armored Core game has aged gracefully. Games do not age. Once a masterpiece, always a masterpiece.
Um, no. The weapon balance for them is terrible. Silent Line had better balance, and those games introduced obscenely broken machine guns and the excessive heat mechanic, which was even more broken than in the past 3 games.
Who the frick cares about weapon balance in Armored Core of all things? The series has always been about having an excess of parts and making whatever you wanted. If you want to minmax, then minmax. If you want to Human Plus, then do it. Are you an ACV-gay who cares about competitive multiplayer?

You built your mech, you want a slow hard hitting tank or an anoying mosquito that doesn't know the ground, you take mission and tune your AC if you have problems clearing any, a lot of balancing involve with generators, weight, cooling, lock on system.
It's more involved than rolling and poking, so people hate it.
Instead it's mostly just circlestrafing.

They've literally been making third-person over-the-shoulder mecha action games since the PS1.
Both Armored Core, which uses their own IP, and Another Century's Episode, which crosses over licensed IPs like Gundam and Macross.
But then they literally stumbled across the success of Demon's Souls and figured they could more easily milk that shit for all its worth by fleecing the gamer-masochist crowd, so pretty much all their other stuff was put on hold.
And yes; Demon's Souls and everything that came after, was a fluke. It originally was meant as an extremely niche Asian-only title, but through word of mouth a large influx of grey import started, which eventually culminated in an official release. And once Fromsoft realized this was basically a completely void niche in the west that had no-one catering to it, they went all in on it.
Because mecha genre is so barren at the moment, might as well take a shot at it. If it goes well, they could dominate the market entirely.

Armored Core 3 set the template for where the franchise should have gone, and clearly built itself on what was learned from AC2/AA, and its follow ups of Silent Line, Nexus and Last Raven perfected that template.
4 and 4A both felt like they were made on a ten dollar budget by people who hated the older games. Fricking black background and Times New Roman font on a wire frame UI that made AC 1997 look more modern. Constantly stuttering at 10fps the moment any amount of explosives were used. The gutting of the mail system to tell any story whatsoever outside of the missions and build connections with other pilots, the shambles of an arena with what, twenty opponents? Armored Core 2 had like 130, and AA itself got shit for removing the arena altogether back in 2001.

Going fast is almost irrelevant to why it's bad, but still plays a part in why it's barely comparable to the PS2 era of games, it cut countless features built up over the previous games and feels cheap.

The early ones are left hand sword or shield, and right arm gun. The mid PS2 games started adding in some left handed gun options, then the later PS2 games had left and right hand options for everything.
Melee weapons are always useful to have at least one of just in case, if you run out of bullets for your guns and don't use energy weapons a bunch it can save you.
Had a really cool feeling moment in the last mission of AC3 where I was completely out of bullets for all my guns for both hands and shoulders and I had been purging them as I ran out. For the last fight in the game I was down to just my sword and nothing else and it felt really cool and climactic.
Fricking hype, armored core 2 was my first PS2 game. I’ve beaten 2, AA, 3, and silent line numerous times. Time for another playthrough.

Should I bother finishing AC2:AA or just move on to AC3? I've been playing each game from AC1 but it seems like AA is just a 100 mission slog and doesn't seem to have much plot going on. I miss the mail system too, do the later games bring them back?
AA has some of best missions in the series sandwiched between a lot of filler. I think it's worthing playing through but you aren't really missing anything essential by dropping it.
AA was just more game for those that wanted more game.
Its got some good shit, but you're not missing too much if you just go to AC3 and Silent Line. I'd say just come back to it every now and then and work through it. Don't force yourself to play it otherwise you'll just come up with a million other reasons to not play anything at all instead.
I hope they leave out the arena bullshit, or at least keep it as a separate funsies game mode with no impact on the game proper.

I like each era of AC games for different reasons. I like the PS2 games the most with Silent Line being my overall favorite to replay, but just because I prefer the PS2 games doesn't mean I cannot enjoy 4A or V.

It's prevalent with franchises who have significant changes between titles, especially when the older games were on an entirely different console that the new player might not own. It's incredibly unlikely for someone who started on the newest title to actually have gone back and played the rest when you not only need to buy the old games, but potentially buy a different system to play them.
So if someone started with ACV(or Monster Hunter World/Rise) and claimed to have played most/all of the past games and came to the conclusion that ACV was the best game, I'd probably bet money that they are lying. Not because I don't think that's a reasonable conclusion to make, but because it's incredibly unlikely that they actually spent the time playing all the past games.
This is less of a problem for AC threads since I think if someone started with ACV a decade ago and is still around AC threads, they've probably at least played some of the older games by this point.
I don't particularly care when someone starts with a certain entry in series, I take issue with people saying that every other game in the series both in the past and any later games or potential future games are automatically bad because its not like the ones they started with and everyone except themselves is objectively wrong.
For example, the gays who say 4A or V are terrible because they aren't like the PS1/PS2 games, or the 4Agays saying V is shit and the PS1/PS2 were never good, or the Vgays that say only their games are good.

I want a mecha game where you can dismount from your mech. For one, it'll be neat to stand at the feet of it and get to marvel at how fricking huge it is. Another thing is that they'll have to design a "big and small world." They can't just cheap out by ignoring small details. Because you can dismount and walk around, buildings will need interiors and there will need to be sufficient detail in the environments near and far. Also, it opens up the opportunity to hijack enemy mechs.

In YOUR opinion. Again, you cannot actually objectively prove anything and once more, fail to articulate your points. All you do is repeat its lazy and cannot explain why you think that way.
In my own opinion, I think the game was clearly under budget and time constraints and a lot of the things they wanted to do they didn't have the time or budget to make happen. Judging by how many different plot threads there are, its clear to me that they wanted to go way deeper with the game and just couldn't fit it all in. A sequel would be interesting now that they know how much they could realistically fit into another DxM within the budget and timeframe of the first game.
Its a minor nitpick for me. I found myself rarely using it so opted to just use something else.

daemon x machina honestly felt weird as far as gameplay went. it didn't matter if you had the highest tier of machinegun you could get, or the lowest tier, the difference between them was basically the highest held a little more ammo, and did like 2 damage extra per bullet. The most effective way of killing the final boss was a complete joke in that it didn't rely on weapons at all, and just throwing shit at the boss because it was a hundred times more efficient than trying to kill it "normally".
If they were going to make a sequel, they need to actually pay attention to shit like weapon upgrades actually doing significantly more damage than their lower equivilents, since there's no merit in buying or upgrading gear when it gives you super minimal improvements over what you've been using for half the game.
They shouldn't have copied the thrash AC4 gameplay style. If you want to make a AC clone you should aim for 3 to LR era AC not the worst selling AC game in japan.

Never played AC. What exactly, mechanic-wise, filtered all those "journos"? Is it like DS, high damage and timings, or something completely different?
nobody got "filtered" by 4 or 5, they're just bad, bad gameplay compared to the older games, bad performance on the consoles they're supposed to run on and they just kinda looked like shit even for their generation. The only good thing about them is the plot which most people won't even fricking understand.
you don't know what you're talking about, AC4 had nice visual effects (Desert Wolf, Swarm of Red Eyes, Empress, Sol Dios and more) and gameplay is classic AC but with a dash. 4 and FA only have framerate issues in missions with lots of enemies or huge bosses spamming missiles, 95% of the missions are perfectly fine.

True rating 4A as medium difficulty when it's no different in that department from AC4 is straight up bizarre.
yeah they are almost all on the same level of difficulty except LR. AC3 is supposedly easy because of the machine gun and ACFA because of the 1-hit kill arms forts with a well placed moonlight swing, but you get same kind of bullshit in other games (karasawa makes AC2 a baby game, and autocannon tank rapes almost everything in VD).
All games are easy to cheese, even LR.

Emulators have trouble getting all your inputs and the games feel less responsive, making PSP games harder for a bad reason.
